FORTHCOMING EVENTS Wednesday 18 October - Kormilda College Commemorative Photographic Exhibition Kormilda College will celebrate the passing of an era on Wednesday 18 October at 6pm with the opening of a commemorative photographic exhibition at the Dumabudla Centre on the College site. If you are unable to make the launch, the exhibition will be open from October during school hours. Wednesday 18 October - Coastal Links: Darwin's Coastal Environment at NT Library at 5.30pm Just in time for National Bird Week, come and join Northern Territory Library's 2017 Creative in Residence, visual artist and advocate, Sarah Pirrie. Sarah, with special guests including Amanda Lilleyman, Ornithologist and PhD Researcher of Migratory Birds, will lead discussions about the ecology and environment of the coastline - in particular the important and fragile inter-tidal zone. Free event, no booking required. Thursday 19 October - Launch of First Person by Richard Flanagan at 5.30pm at the NT Library Northern Territory Library and The Bookshop, Darwin are proud to present an evening with multiaward winning Australian author, Richard Flanagan. Hailed as the finest Australian novelist of his generation by The Economist, Flanagan won the Man Booker Prize in 2014 for Narrow Road to the Deep North, which has sold more than a million copies worldwide. Join Richard at the Library to hear about his newly-released seventh novel, First Person, about a penniless writer who gets caught up in a world of con-men, fraud and corruption. The book will be available for purchase and signing by Richard at the event. Thursday 19 October Herodotus, the Father of History by Austin Asche at Charles Darwin University at 6.30pm The talk is about Herodotus great work on the Persian invasion of Greece and the remarkable victories of the Greeks over the most powerful and dominating nation of the day. The joy of Herodotus is that he spices his history with all sorts of fascinating anecdotes and observations about the countries and the people of the world around Greece. The talk will be held at the Casuarina Campus in the Blue Building Room

2 Saturday 21 October - History Colloquium at the NT Library The all day free event will be held at the NT Library, Parliament House, corner of Mitchell and Bennett Streets, Darwin. The colloquium is supported by the Northern Territory Library, the Professional Historians Association (NT), the Centre for Environmental History at The Australian National University and Charles Darwin University. The Historical Society will be holding a book stall at the Colloquium. For any inquiries, contact Dr Steven Farram, Lecturer in North Australian and Regional Studies (History), Charles Darwin University, phone: steven.farram@cdu.edu.au. The final program is attached. Thursday 26 October, David Bridgman on Port Essington, Victoria Settlement: a heritage perspective at NT Archives, 5.15pm for a 5.3pm start David Bridgman is a Darwin-based Conservation Architect who has worked across the Territory on a broad range of heritage sites including the Victoria Settlement at Port Essington, which was established in 1838 and abandoned in The settlement saw some key buildings being constructed including Government House, a hospital and kitchen, Officer s Quarters, and several cottages, remnants of which survive today. This talk will look briefly at the extent and history of the settlement and then focus on recent conservation works to the various sites including restoration of Mrs Lambrick s grave, the Cornish chimneys from the Married Quarters, and a charcoal kiln built into the side of the escarpment. Wednesday 8 November Sister Anne Gardiner, AM - Eric Johnston Lecture at NT Library at 5.30pm Sister Anne Gardiner AM, the 2017 Senior Australian of the Year, will deliver this year's Eric Johnston Lecture at the Northern Territory Library. Since arriving on Bathurst Island aged 22, Sister Anne has devoted 62 years of her life to supporting the Tiwi culture. She will talk about her efforts to enrich community, enhance opportunity and improve health outcomes for her beloved Tiwi people. An advocate of peace, love and the traditional Tiwi way of life, Sister Anne has worked tirelessly to document and preserve the Tiwi language for future generations. The annual lecture series was established in 1986 and named in honour of the Administrator of the time, Commodore Eric Johnston, who was the inaugural speaker and a personal friend of Sister Anne's. 2

History House is located at 16 Charlton Court, Woolner (Charlton Court is on the corner of Bishop Street, where pink Middis is). Turn into Charlton Court and then turn first right. 4 A bookseller Extra-ordinaire is needed A volunteer is needed to help out one Friday night every month at the National Trust/Historical Society talks at Burnett House. The talks are usually held on the last Friday of the month and assistance is needed from approx 5pm until 8pm. The Society previously ran a book stall at the talks but due to lack of volunteers, this ceased in Is anyone interested in kick-starting the book stall at these talks for 2018? We need a responsible person who is willing to set up and close the book stall on the night, keep a float and receipt the books sold. NT History Grants The NT History Grants support and encourage research into Northern Territory history. Anyone embarking on a Northern Territory history project within the next 12 months can apply for a 2017 History Grant. Individuals and community organisations can apply for up to $7000 with a total funding pool of $60,000. The NT History Grants have been funding history projects in the Territory for 30 years and preference will be given to original topics. The scope of grants includes: Funding to assist with printing expenses, development of audio and visual material, and web expenses, travel and accommodation, stationary and consumables, incidental research fees and copying charges Applications close on 27 October 2017 For more information contact NT Archives or 4
