Moreton Bay & Islands Where Brisbane unwinds Is there anything as nourishing for the spirit as that moment when you crest a hill and see sparkling water? Or step out of the car under a canopy of leafy trees and hear birds calling to each other? Worries tend to fall away at the feel of refreshing sea air on your skin, the smell of the bush or the sound of breaking waves or gently lapping water. Moreton Bay with its clear waters, stunning islands and charming villages hugging its mainland coastline provides the perfect place for a relaxing break or an adrenaline-filled adventure. Sail the calm waters of the bay or kite-surf across the surface; surf at one of the world s most beautiful beaches; wine and dine at world class wineries; spot native wildlife in breathtaking natural bushland; camp and fish on pristine sandy beaches overlooking the Pacific Ocean; or spot migrating humpback whales and playful dolphins in crystal clear water. Alternatively, you could simply enjoy a relaxing break with friends or family; camp by the beach, book a holiday apartment, stay at a B&B or resort, or rent a holiday house. There are markets, boutiques, art galleries and museums to explore; cafes and restaurants to tempt your taste buds; national parks to take you back to nature; and of course, the glorious bay to replenish your spirit. Many bayside villages are only 25 kilometres from the Brisbane CBD, and almost all islands are under an hour s journey from the heart of the city. With so many experiences on offer, the choice is yours. 2 Moreton Bay & islands Moreton Bay & islands 1

North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) With its breathtaking combination of pristine natural beauty, charming villages, stunning ocean views and adrenalinepumping adventure. North Stradbroke is a genuine island paradise. From endless surf beaches to the calmness of Moreton Bay, you ll find yourself drawn to the sparkling water. All three island villages are linked by bitumen roads, and the island has reliable public transport. This 27,500 hectares island also has freshwater springs and inland lakes. Travel by water taxi or take your own car on the vehicle ferry. Point LOOkout Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this gorgeous village has one of the best views in the world, including the magnificent North Gorge and unspoilt surf beaches. Spot whales from the gorge, surf in the ocean, sandboard down the dunes or just relax and enjoy the easy island lifestyle. You can camp by the beach, stay in an apartment or rent one of the Point s luxury holiday homes. Point Lookout has a relaxed seaside atmosphere, but also all the creature comforts of home (shops, supermarket, hotel and bottle shop). When it comes to dining out, you can have fish and chips overlooking the North Gorge or sample local seafood (and other delicacies) at bustling cafes and restaurants. There s a wide range of accommodation options at the Point, from beachside camping, backpackers guesthouse and B&Bs to luxury units and stunning holiday rental houses (many with private whale watching towers). When you ve had your fill of sun, sand and surf, you can browse art galleries and boutique stores selling resort wear, gifts and crafts, or book in for some pampering at the Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel Day Spa. There are also regular Sunday markets. Amity Point Located on the island s northern shore, Amity is a popular fishing village. A great spot for camping and fishing, you can enjoy seafood fresh off the trawler and maybe even spot a koala in the towering gum trees. Boat owners, anglers and families love the relaxing atmosphere here, along with the sandy beaches and easy access to the water. The jetty is ideal for fishing whether the tide is coming in or going out, and it s where trawlers offload the night s catch of fresh prawns, crabs and fish ready for the tables of local restaurants and shops. Amity Point has a safe swimming enclosure, and on sunset, you can sit on the spit and watch the sun set over Moreton Bay, enjoying spectacular views of nearby Peel, Green and Moreton Islands. The township has a range of family and budget accommodation, as well as a beachfront camping area which runs along the foreshore towards the sand spit. Dunwich This village is your first taste of the island when you arrive by vehicle barge or water taxi. It connects the island to the mainland (Cleveland), has tranquil bay views, and is home to the famous Island Fruit Barn always popular with foodies. One of the two water taxi services to the island lands at One Mile Jetty, where you ll also find the popular Little Ship Club. The club offers meals and has lovely views over the bay. Take the time to have a look around and you ll find plenty of interesting spots, like the Salt Water Murris Quandamooka Art Gallery, featuring paintings by local Indigenous artists. A wealth of local Indigenous history can also be found at the Terra Bulla Leaumeah reserve, where you can learn about the history of the Noonuccal people. You can explore the signed reserve on your own, or request a guided tour. The Dunwich Museum has excellent collections offering an insight into Indigenous and colonial history. You can also pick up a copy there of the North Stradbroke Island Heritage Trail guide book. You can stock up on supplies from local shops and if you re looking to stay on this side of the island, there are two waterfront camping grounds. Moreton Bay & islands Moreton Bay & islands 5

While you re here... > the Walk This 1.5 km boardwalk offers stunning views of pristine sandy beaches and the Blow Hole, a unique rock formation that mimics the humpback whales that pass by each year. The walk is one of the best places on the island to spot the migrating whales from June to November, not to mention dolphins and turtles year-round. > explore Main Beach On foot or in a 4WD, experience the sensation of having the beach to yourself, with 32 km of unspoilt coastline to explore. > relax at the Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel This iconic hotel and spa resort has spectacular ocean views from its bar and restaurant and its famous outdoor pool table. > Ride a scooter A fun way to explore Point Lookout is on a scooter from Anchorage Beach Resort. No experience necessary! > Go sandboarding Fly down pristine sand dunes on a guided tour with Straddie Kingfisher Tours at Point Lookout. > Eat prawns direct from the trawler There s no better way to enjoy delicious prawns than fresh off the trawler at Amity Point. > Spot whales There s no need to leave land to see migrating humpback whales; just follow the whale trail at Point Lookout. > Carve up the surf Cylinder Beach offers one of the most picturesque spots to catch a wave in Queensland. > Ride a camel on the beach Every school holidays, Southern Cross Camels offers a fun and unique way to experience Home Beach at Point Lookout. The camels are well trained and the location is gorgeous. Peel Island (Teerk Roo Ra National Park) Most visitors to Moreton Bay only know Peel Island as the uninhabited land mass you pass on the way to North Stradbroke Island. But this national park is a favourite with boaties in the know. The island is accessible only by watercraft, with the main attraction being Horseshoe Bay on its southern side. On weekends and holidays, boats, yachts and sea kayaks jostle for position in this picturesque bay to get close to the pristine, sandy beach or find the best fishing spot. Dugongs, turtles, sharks and dolphins also frequent the waters around the island, and thousands of jellyfish can be see following the currents most of the year. The island itself has a fascinating history: over the past 200 years, it s been home to a quarantine station, asylum, sisal farm and leper colony although today, there are few traces of the past left. > Enjoy the serenity Take a picnic to tranquil Brown Lake, a serene freshwater inland lake or enjoy a hike to Blue Lake. > DIVe with manta rays in summer in one of the top 10 Australian locations just off Point Lookout. > CHALLENGE your MATES to barefoot bowls at Point Lookout Bowls Club. > throw in a line from the beach and try your luck at catching a tasty meal. > spend a day in dunwich exploring the historic sites including the cemetery and museum. Did you know? Did you know 50 per cent of North Stradbroke Island was declared a National Park in 2011 as part of an historic agreement with the Quandamooka people? The park is called Naree Budjong Djara, meaning my mother earth. QuANDAMOOka Country The Quandamooka People offer a range of Aboriginal cultural experiences on North Stradbroke Island, from guided headland and bush walks to boomerang painting and throwing. Visitors can experience traditional Aboriginal song and dance, discover the bush tucker trail and learn more about the art and craft of the Quandamooka People. You ll also find the Salt Water Murris Quandamooka Gallery in Dunwich, which captures the Indigenous creative culture of the island, dating back thousands of years. Almost all artists are direct descendants of the original peoples of the Quandamooka Region. 6 Moreton Bay & islands

Moreton Island If you re looking for adventure, stunning scenery and endless beaches, look no further than Moreton Island. It s got massive sand dunes, glassy lakes, rocky outcrops, wild forest, beautiful beaches and an historic lighthouse. It s a favourite spot for anglers, with its unspoilt beaches and plentiful fish stocks. The waters around the island provide some of the best fishing in the world (beach, deep sea or reef). The island is perfect for 4WD adventures, sand tobogganing, water activities and hiking. It is hugely popular for camping, and there are other accommodation options in the towns and at Tangalooma Island Resort. There are three townships on Moreton Island with access via 4WD along the beach or unmade roads. While you re here THE TOWNS Bulwer: Based at the entrance to roads that lead to the northern part of the island (North Point, Cape Moreton Lighthouse, Blue Lagoon and the Champagne Pool). It has its own general store and Castaways Moreton Island accommodation. COWAN COWAN: A quiet residential township with holiday houses and fishing cabins. There s no through traffic and the beach is vehicle-free, making it a popular spot for families with small children. Kooringal: A sleepy little town famous for The Toulkerrie Oyster Farm and Gutter Bar. Although more isolated, Kooringal offers a relaxing, secluded holiday stay off the beaten path. > swim in the Blue Lagoon Rejuvenate at this natural fresh water lake infused with tea tree oils. Its fresh water and white sand make it the perfect spot for a swim or to just sit back and relax. There s also abundant bird life and wild flowers. > check out Cape Moreton Lighthouse and lookout Visit Queensland s original lighthouse (first lit in 1857) on the north eastern point of the island. It sits on a rocky outcrop that provides a great viewing spot for migrating humpback whales (June to November), as well as dolphins, manta rays, and turtles. > relax at the Champagne Pools Take a refreshing dip in the pools at North Point. > Toboggan down a STEEP sand dune Experience The Desert at crazy speeds, just south of Tangalooma Island Resort. > Climb Mount Tempest Tackle the highest coastal sand dune in the world (285 metres above sea level.) It can be a tough trek to the top, but the 360 degree view is worth it. You ll see the mainland coastline, from the Sunshine Coast in the north across to Brisbane and the Gold Coast in the south. > visit North Point and Honeymoon Bay North Point, the northern tip of the island, is part of a 1.5 km section of rock outcrops. Honeymoon Bay, just south, is the most famous of the four beaches along this stretch. The beach is 50 m long, backed by 15 m high bluffs. With its rips, hidden rocks and big waves, this is not the spot for swimming but the scenery is breathtaking. > Dive or snorkel Explore the Tangalooma wrecks and Curtain Artificial Reef in the crystal clear waters. Most diving is done on the north side of Moreton Island where you can find Flinders Reef, the only true coral reef in the area. Marine life includes around 180 species of fish, and the reef is also famous for being a turtle cleaning station (a place where sea turtles congregate in order to get their shells cleaned by various algae-eating fish, and to have their skin picked clean of parasites; turtles will lie on the reef, or assume one of several cleaning postures, to allow the fish to scrape away the algae or get at the parasites). > ENJOY LAND and WATER ACTIVITIES including Seqway beach tours, outrigger canoes, sailing and paragliding with Adventure Moreton Island Tangatours. Did you know? It s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to hand feed one of up to 10 playful wild bottlenose dolphins that visit Tangalooma Island Resort each evening at sunset. > experience ADVENTURE 4WD TOURS/OVERNIGHT CAMPING and water activities with knowledgeable tour operators including Moreton Bay Escapes and Sunrover Tours. > Test your 4WD skills Tackle the cross-island tracks and beaches on one of the world s largest sand islands. > Camp under the stars Watch the sun go down behind the Glass House Mountains and then enjoy the spectacular night sky away from city lights. > Walk the Rous Battery track Take the 9.8 km hike across the island to Rous Battery, a coastal fort built on the eastern side of the island to protect Brisbane during World War II. The track passes through scribbly gum forest and patches of foxtail grass. Moreton Bay & islands Moreton Bay & islands 9

Coochiemudlo Island family favourite, Coochiemudlo A is a fantastic spot for swimming and relaxing water sports. Karragarra, Lamb, Macleay and Russell Islands (Southern Moreton Bay Islands) Close to the mainland, the island has protected waters and shallow beaches. It s only five square kilometers making it easy to explore and, with four kilometers of safe beaches, is a great place for the kids to swim. Relaxation is the key on this tranquil island, so kick back and enjoy the serenity. You can throw in a line or stroll through the melaleuca wetlands. Of course, if you re looking for some fun on the water, you can always hire an aqua bike, canoe, kayak or tinnie. These tranquil islands offer natural bush settings, calm bay waters and marine wetlands. They are a great place for a relaxing break from the usual hustle and bustle of daily life. Ideal for day trips or a weekend away. These islands are all serviced by the same ferries and water taxis, making it easy to island hop. Bring a picnic lunch, cook your own barbecue meal, or grab a bite to eat at the local café. Coochie is only 10 minutes by water taxi, ferry or barge from Victoria Point. While you re here > RELAX AT Foreshore Park Picnic or barbecue by calm waters while the kids play, or just sit back and watch the sailing boats pass by. > Swim The beautiful white sandy main beach is the safest place to take the children swimming on Coochie, or meander across to the other side of the island at mid-tide and take a dip at Morwong Beach. > Paddle on an aqua bike There are no waves here, so get on board and have fun! Coochie Boat Hire has aqua bikes, kayaks, canoes and tinnies for hire. > Play a round of golf Enjoy a game on the scenic and compact nine-hole course at Coochiemudlo. > Walk the island It s only a kilometre across! This annual event every July includes free entertainment, live music, markets, sailing and an outrigger canoe race. 10 Moreton Bay & islands Russell Island The largest of the four islands, Russell is three kilometres wide and eight kilometres long. You ll find plenty of home comforts, with a medical centre, supermarket, library, public parks, and transport services, as well as a museum, swimming pool, and RSL and bowls clubs. Karragarra Island Only half a kilometre wide and two kilometres long, Karragarra is the smallest of the bay islands. Why not pack a picnic and catch the ferry across for a fun family outing? The island has sandy beaches and a protected swimming pool near the jetty. Lamb Island The second smallest of the islands is easy to navigate (only two kilometres wide and a kilometre long) and offers a protected swimming enclosure in the bay. Meet the locals at the recreation clubhouse and pick up supplies at the general store near the jetty terminal. Macleay Island There s plenty to do on Macleay, with a bowls club, boat club and golf course, as well as several beaches for swimming and fishing and foreshore parks with barbecue facilities. Potts Point is a popular spot for picnics and swimming. Macleay has the largest population of the four islands so there are plenty of facilities, including local shopping centres, transport services, restaurants and a hotel. While you re here > catch the Macleay Island Canoe Race Each April, watch competitors race to circumnavigate the island along a 15 km course. It s a great way to spend the day on this tranquil island. > Take an art class Explore your creativity on Macleay Island at working studio Timeless Gallery s Mosaic Garden and Studio, with professional freeform artist Madeleine Ekeblad. > play Barefoot bowls Feel the sea breeze in your hair and the grass under your feet as you roll a bowl at the Macleay Island Bowls Club, overlooking Moreton Bay.
