Largely inaccessible and protected by its very remoteness, The Kimberley offers landscapes etched with ancient human history. On Jar Island, discover an outdoor gallery of incredible Bradshaw rock art and see beautiful Wandjina art at Raft Point. View King George s towering twin falls plunging over 80 metres, witness the spectacular tidal change at Montgomery Reef and depending on the tides take an exhilarating ride through Talbot Bay s Horizontal Falls (own expense). Cruise by Zodiac through an untamed wilderness, spotting extraordinary wildlife, experiencing waterfalls and marvelling at ancient rock paintings. Explore narrow channels, searching for eagles and ospreys in the mangroves and mud flats, and keeping an eye out for Saltwater crocodiles. Meet some of your fellow travellers while enjoying the first of many memorable meals in The Restaurant. Day 2-7: Talbot Bay, Montgomery Reef, King George River and Falls The Kimberley is famous for having the second largest tidal range in the world. A flexible itinerary allows you to take advantage of this natural phenomenon. In the true spirit of expedition cruising, each day the Expedition Leader and Captain will determine the best course depending on tide, weather and sea conditions. Spend time exploring this wondrous region and possibly visit Talbot Bay, Montgomery Reef, Raft Point, Hunter River, King George River and Falls. Day 8: Wyndham Wyndham is the gateway to the Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park. For more than 350 million years, nature has shaped geological formations of giant orange and black striped domes rising out of the ground, a landscape unlike anything you have ever seen. Today take part in an included flight for an aerial view of these glorious panoramas, as well as seeing the majestic, man-made Lake Argyle and Argyle Diamond Mine. Day 9: Day at sea A leisurely day at sea to exchange notes with fellow travellers and take advantage of the luxurious amenities aboard Silver Discoverer. 27 Travel Tips Start planning your Rail and Cruise adventure with these handy hints, travel tips and the must do festivals and events. Aboriginal culture Almost one quarter of the Northern Territory s population are Aboriginal people and nearly half of the Territory is Aboriginal-owned land. Family business and ceremonies are important to Aboriginal people and these matters take priority, which may alter scheduled tours or restrict access to sites with spiritual significance. Aboriginal Land Access Driving over Aboriginal owned land and access into Arnhem Land is restricted. Visitors must apply for a permit from the Northern Land Council. It is best to choose a tour where operators have permission from the traditional owners to enter their land. In Western Australia Transit Permits to visit indigenous communities are granted through the Aboriginal Lands Trust. Swimming The Northern Territory and Kimberley region have many safe places to swim, including local nature reserves and in some national parks. Salt and Freshwater crocodiles are found in most billabongs and rivers, and are occasionally seen on remote beaches. This is generally sign-posted, but if you are unsure, don t swim. Beach swimming is not recommended from October to April due to marine stingers. Weather During the dry season from May to October expect warm, sunny days and cool nights. This is the best time to experience all outdoor activities, with most roads and attractions open throughout the season The wet season is characterised by increased humidity and monsoonal rain and storms from November to April some attractions may not be accessible due to road closures.
