1 CITY OF PARKLAND VOLUNTEER NEWSLETTER May issue 2015 Inside this issue: Silver Surfers Intergenerational Program 2 Relay For Life 3 Parkland Historical Society 4 Volunteer of the Quarter 5-6
2 Silver Surfers Intergenerational Program Volunteers Volunteering In Parkland The Silver Surfers Intergenerational Program is a collaborative effort between the City of Parkland and Aston Gardens. This program matches up local high school students to interested seniors that live in Aston Gardens and will provide for technology training for those participants from the facility that are eager to learn more about computer technology. "Silver Surfers" is a volunteer-led training program that aims to make technology training for individuals over age 75 accessible, enjoyable, affordable and equitable. This intergenerational program was designed with the challenges and barriers experienced by older learners in mind such as older people's fear of technology or feeling they are too old to learn. The aim of this program is to challenge stereotypical views and create a better understanding and respect between the generations through interaction. " Being part of the Silver Surfers program was just an amazing experience. I really enjoyed helping the senior citizens with what we know the best. I became more aware that they can actually learn and use technology; just it was a matter of spending time to teach them. I am very happy that i took part in this incredible program for the past few months." Joelle Anter, student " I received a Kindle as a gift with no accompanying instructions. I stared at it for months in frustration. Thiago and Bree came and in one hour helped me to understand and use it. I am very grateful. Thank you!" Ann Eisner, Aston Parkland Commons
3 Relay For Life Volunteers Relay For Life Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer through the Relay for Life movement. In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation s biggest health concern cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay for Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer. The City of Parkland formed a team to walk continuous around the clock for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life held on Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 12pm to 12pm. The relay was held at the Stoneman Douglas High School. Many Parkland residents of all ages came out to support and walk for the City of Parkland Team in the fight against cancer and the push for a cure. Many donations were collected and fundraising efforts were a success. Thank you to all of those residents and employees that came out to support our team. Hope to see everyone next year for Relay 2016!
4 Parkland Historical Society The Purpose of the Parkland Historical Society The purpose of the Parkland Historical Society is to preserve the City s historical past for all interested individuals both in Parkland and beyond its city limits. The Parkland Historical Society is the depository of all things historical related to the City of Parkland, FL. The Mission of the Parkland Historical Society The mission of the Parkland Historical Society is to collect and catalog all historic artifacts, written accounts, oral histories, folk-life and memorabilia relating to the City of Parkland since its establishment in 1963 and to educate the public regarding local history and preservation. The Parkland Historical Society compiles information so that it will be accessible to the public through historic displays, educational seminars, the internet and in the future, Parkland s own Historical Museum. The Parkland Historical Society is dedicated to preserving local traditions and providing opportunities for the community to learn about Parkland s heritage. There are tasks that can be accomplished in a couple of hours whenever a volunteer has time available. We re confident that the volunteer will find this to be very rewarding and educational, as well as a tremendous assistance to the Parkland Historical Society. Whether you re interested in volunteering your time or you have items to donate, please contact Pierre Hodot through , pierre@parklandhistoricalsociety.org or by phone at
