1 HEART FOUNDATION CVD PREVALENCE MAPS 2014 The Heart Foundation CVD Prevalence Maps 2014 show the relative prevalence of long term conditions by regions SOURCE: Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australian Health Survey 2011/ Australian Health Survey: Updated Results, (Released June 2013) Australian Health Survey: Physical Activity, (Released July 2013) Australian Health Survey: Biomedical Results for Chronic Diseases, (Released August 2013) POPULATION: The data is based on Australians aged 18 years of age and over. REGIONS: The regions included in the CVD Prevalence Maps are based on the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). Data is based on statistical level areas 3 (SA3) and 4 (SA4), with non-metropolitan data based on SA4, and metropolitan data based on SA4. SA3s Brief Description In general, the SA3s are designed to have populations between 30,000 and 130,000 persons. SA3s are often the functional areas of regional towns and cities with a population in excess of 20,000 or clusters of related suburbs around urban commercial and transport hubs within the major urban areas. The regional breakups have been designed to reflect regional identity. These are areas with both geographic and socio-economic similarities. In many cases, these areas are defined by existing administrative boundaries such as State al Development Areas or one or more LGAs. SA4s Brief Description A minimum of 100,000 persons was set for the SA4s, although there are some exceptions to this. In regional areas, SA4s tend to have populations closer to the minimum (100, ,000). In metropolitan areas, the SA4s tend to have larger populations (300, ,000). DATA DEFINITIONS: Prevalence of Cardiovascular Disease Based on persons aged 18 and over who self reported long term circulatory system conditions, including: ischaemic heart diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, oedema, hypertension, heart failure, and diseases of the arteries, arterioles and capillaries. DATA LIMITATIONS: The prevalence of long term conditions and risk factors for each region is not age standardised. Although age variance is a factor for low or high prevalence, it must be noted, median age varies across regions by +/- 20%, whilst prevalence of cardiovascular disease, hypertension and cholesterol varies by at least +/- 60%. Thus, age only accounts for a small proportion of the difference. The data does not include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and due to the low population and insufficient ABS data, we are unable to provide a true representation of CVD prevalence in the Northern Territory.
