18 16 21) ESTABLISHMENT OF MAIZE MANDI Nabarangapur District has the largest area coverage under Maize. The district has about 52,500 hectors under Maize cultivation with an estimated production of 3.78 lakhs Metric Tones (MT). There is a Regulated Market Committee (RMC) in Nabarangapur district with the Principal Market Yard at Nabarangapur and 07 subsidiary Market Yards at different places in the district. The major Maize-producing areas are under Raighar, Umerkote, Jhorigam and Dabugaon Blocks each of which has a Sub Market Yard. These Sub Market Yards have infrastructural facilities which are used for the sale and purchase of various agricultural commodities such as Maize, Ragi, Niger, Arhar and Urad & for Paddy,Maize is produced over large tracts in Raighar and Umerkote Blocks and existing infrastructural facilities in these Sub Market Yards are not adequate to handle trading of the huge arrivals of Maize after harvest. For the benefit of Maize producers who are mostly tribal farmers, it was decided to establish two Specialized Maize Mandies by providing certain essential infrastructural facilities required for the sale and purchase of Maize in two Sub Market Yards at Umerkote & Raighar where the RMC has its own land. In each of the above two Sub Market Yards, two Godowns of 500 MT capacity each, platforms with threshing floor, concrete platforms, shops with Godowns, a farmers rest shed, farmers information centre and arrangements for water supply, electrification and development of the internal road have been provided. These new Mandies declared as Maize Mandies have been dedicated exclusively to the sale and purchase of Maize. With the establishment of these two Specialized Mandies/Markets the tribal farmers of this backward district will be immensely benefited. With a view to provide efficient service to Farmers, 2(two) nos.of weigh bridge at Umerkote & Raighar Maize mandi is to be installed & the work has under process and it would be started function in the kharif seasons.
19 CULTIVATORS AWARNESS PROGRAMME In Nabarangapur District Maize is one of the good Crop growing area for which the Private Traders are very much in the line of trading directly from the Maize farmers. During the year the, RMC, Nabarangapur has constructed 2(two) nos.of Maize Mandi Projects at Umerkote & Raighar Sub Market Yard. But it is not being utilized properly till date. So to create on awareness campaign among farmers as well as Traders of area the RMC, Nabarangapur has taken up the Cultivators Awareness Work Shop programme at Umerkote & Raighar Maize Mandi point during month of Oct 2010 under the Chairmanship of Sub-Collector, Nabarangapur and other District Level Officer of Nabarangapur District. The Maize cultivators participated in the discussion offer their opinion that there should be involvement of Govt.agencies or Coop. Agencies in the Maize procurement process. However, the farmers at present are getting more than M.S.P.Rs.880/- per Qtl. But due to the massive cultivation of Maize in Nabarangapur District there is possibility of distress sale in future. So the Govt.should come forward and entrust procurement to any Govt. Agencies which will be more beneficial to the Farmers. Secretary, R.M.C,Nabarangapur
