10 Goomalling Enjoy a taste of country life Great for a holiday, day trip or a quick stop, Goomalling is a warm and welcoming small country town that offers everything. A range of accommodation, great barista coffee, good places to eat as well as a variety of attractions, fun things to do, history, shopping, art and comprehensive essential services. Goomalling is rich in the history that saw Australia settle and thrive into the late 1800s and 1900s. As the Swan River Colony grew pastoral leases began opening up the Avon Valley. Sheep grazing was the primary activity and as Conditional Purchase lots were sold clearing of the land saw grain growing flourish in this fertile and reliable rainfall area. Over the years industrialisation has impacted on the landscape with the smaller farm labour intensive practices replaced by automated machinery. Larger paddocks and farms resulted in fewer farms and a decline in population from the 70 s to the 90 s. Grain and the storage of this primary industry is a commonality for the towns in the Avon evident in the diversity of Cooperative Bulk Handling structures found in the Valley and the wider Wheatbelt. As you approach the townsite of Goomalling the iconic domes, built in 1994, stand alongside the A type storage popular in the 60s. Just as diverse as these storage facilities is the variety of grains now grown in the Wheatbelt. Cereal crops are interspersed with the vibrant gold of canola and grey green foliage of lupins. Jennacubbine A visit to Jennacubbine, located between Northam, Toodyay and Goomalling, is a must. The playground area and delicious meals at the Jennacubbine Tavern make it a very family friendly destination, plus there s a pool room, BBQ area, shaded garden and accommodation for those fond of a drink or two. The Jenna Hall, typical of community halls built in the 50s, is put to good use by the local community and is available for hire. St Isidore s Catholic Church was built in 1907 and celebrates Mass once a month. The CWA building is a quaint little building built in 1953 for 119. Konnongorring The Gabby Quoi Quoi Lookout provides a view of some of the extensive revegetation work done in the area by local farmers, which nature lovers and conservationists will be sure to admire. Stretch your legs on a little stroll around the small town of Konnongorring and you ll see two churches. St Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church built in 1929 a charming and picturesque church (which is now a private residence), and Christ Church the Uniting and Anglican Church built in Christ Church has about four services a year. Picnic table and chairs is set amongst the revegetation behind the Hall, a little rural community space build in 1930 with adjacent public toilets for travelers convenience. Nature Oak Park Reserve is one of Goomalling s many reserves and picnic spots. The natural and cultural heritage of the reserve and surrounding area is outlined on the 3km walk trail signage. The shaded picnic table, BBQ and toilet are well maintained to ensure your picnic is pleasurable. Orchids and wildflowers can abound in winter and spring time. The Mortlock River Rest Stop, 10kms west of Goomalling along the Toodyay Road is a spectacular piece of bushland especially in Winter/Spring. The river level is dependent on rainfall and can provide a haven for waterbirds. The rocky riverbed is picturesque dry but provides stunning shots when the water trickles or floods over the rocks. The Rest Stop has a long drop toilet and 24 hour camping is allowed. Insect repellent recommended. Culture Goomalling has a rich Aboriginal history and is an Aboriginal word which means the place of the silver-grey possum ; goomal or koomal meaning possum and ing meaning place of. The interpretative walk trail at Oak Park includes fragments of information about the Goomalling s original Ballardong people and their culture. The Native Reserve on the outskirts of the town site was home to the Aboriginal people during the oppressive government Aborigines Act of 1886 and 1905; today you can explore the natural environment where the people lived, told yarns and held many corroborees. Exploring the site you may come across the cement remnants of an old humpy. 9 Goomalling

11 NEW NORCIA VICTORIA PLAINS CHITTERING TOODYAY NORTHAM GOOMALLING PERTH YORK BEVERLEY Stunningseasons If you enjoy gorgeous scenery you will delight in Goomalling s changing seasons. The patterned paddocks during seeding time (April July) make a pretty patchwork bordered by native vegetation reserves and country roads. The lush green vistas of winter are highlighted with bursts of wildflowers from July till September. Just before harvest the landscape is a rich tapestry of colour bold yellow canola alongside striking green pastures and crops, the jewel-like colours contrasting with the blue sky on the wide horizon. After harvest, the summer months bring Goomalling an array of gold, ochre, red and russet. Dining Go Café boasts the best coffee in the Wheatbelt, so call in for their all day breakfast, or a leisurely lunch. The range of healthy and traditional takeaways at Dunning s or BP Roadhouse s will have your mouth watering in the time it takes to fuel up your tank. 14 Page 14 Northam Northam Experience the Heart of the Avon Valley Northam is a vibrant, growing town that is becoming more exciting year by year. It is often referred to as the business hub of the Avon Valley; due primarily to the fact that a number of government buildings, service providers, financial institutions, chain stores, and public services are located in the townsite, however Northam is also a bustling hub of activity for those looking to visit for leisure. Northam is situated in the heart of the Avon Valley, and is the gateway to the Wheatbelt of Western Australia. Located less than 100kms from Perth, the township is the perfect base from which to explore the Avon Valley and beyond. Whether for a day trip, relaxed weekend getaway, or an extended stay, Northam offers something for everyone and hosts many special events throughout the year. The Northam Visitor Centre can provide you with the most recent information on where to stay and what to do in the region. The Avon River flows through the town and has an abundance of bird life, including the unique white swan. Spanning the river next to the Visitor Centre is the pedestrian suspension bridge, which is the longest of its kind in Australia. Aboriginal Heritage We acknowledge the people of the Ballardong tribe, who are part of the Nyungar race and have inhabited this area since long before European settlement. Call into the Visitor Centre for more information on cultural heritage, stories, and information on important cultural sites around Northam. The Track mainly follows a rail reserve with low gradient and compacted gravel surface. With plenty of access and parking areas along the route, there are options for short walks and bush outings or you can take the train to Northam to complete the entire trail with overnight stops. Contact the Visitor Centre for a brochure or visit The Mt Ommanney Walking tracks offer spectacular views from every aspect, but are generally suitable for people with a reasonable level of fitness, as the terrain can be rocky and steep. The climb from the base of the mount is 1km with an 8 degree rise, and there are other track options available. The Dorntj Koorliny track follows the banks of the Avon River and is in total some 18km in length. The track, named after the Aboriginal term for walking together, incorporates significant Aboriginal Heritage listed sites with information provided en route. For those less energetic or constrained by time, undertaking only the around the bridges component of the track, which is sealed, is well worthwhile. The Clackline Walking trails commence from the Clackline township some 20km west of Northam on the Great Eastern Highway, and range in length from 1km to 8kms. The trails feature a range of attractions, including historic rail bridge, historic sites and wildflowers. 16 Toodyay a valley for all seasons Only an hour s drive from Perth, Toodyay is nestled in the heart of the Avon Valley, offering a scenic agricultural and bush setting. Toodyay has received the iconic Australia s Tidy Town award for 2015, and the State Heritage and Culture award for 2016! Step back in history, take in Toodyay s ambience, drive through the countryside or perhaps take a walk through one of the parks or nature reserves. The original town site of West Toodyay was on the banks of the Avon River, five kilometres west of its current location. However this site was prone to flooding, therefore in 1860 the settlement was moved to the current location and named Newcastle after Lord Lincoln, Duke of Newcastle. However, after losing a lot of mail to Newcastle in NSW, in 1910 the name Toodyay was adopted for the current township. The name Toodyay is believed to have been derived from the Aboriginal word Duidgee meaning place of plenty. Toodyay was classified a Historic Town in 1980 and takes pride in its heritage, winning several awards, including the WA State Heritage Awards. Its main street displays fine examples of 19th century architecture reflecting the early convict era. Some of these buildings retain their original use, while others house quaint shops and cafes. Toodyay also celebrates its natural environment with Duidgee Park nestled on the banks of the Avon River offering many of the features such as BBQs, playgrounds and skate park that make for a wonderful family outing, while also giving visitors easy access to the river. The Toodyay Miniature Railway runs on the first and third Sunday of the month from Easter through to November, as well as Wednesdays during school holidays. Passengers can ride the train on its winding course along the banks of the Avon River. Relax and browse the local shops, have a coffee or enjoy a drink on the verandah of a country pub. Perhaps you would like to pick up an original piece from one of our local artisans, amble through country gardens, or visit our wineries and olive groves. 17 NEW NORCIA VICTORIA PLAINS GOOMALLING CHITTERING TOODYAY NORTHAM PERTH YORK BEVERLEY Toodyay s Moondyne Joe Toodyay s identity has been shaped by the escapades of Joseph Bolitho Johns, known as Moondyne Joe, a convict who became a notorious bushranger. Transported to Australia in 1853 as a convict, Johns lived in the hills of Toodyay in an area known as Moondyne Springs. Arrested for stealing a horse in 1861, Moondyne Joe escaped from the Convict Depot lock-up. This escape proved the first of many for Joe, including a sensational breakout from Fremantle Prison. Today the town holds the annual Moondyne Festival which includes a re-enactment of his escape. Newcastle Gaol Museum The Newcastle Gaol was built in 1862 using convict labour and has undergone extensive restoration and renovation. Newcastle Gaol presents Toodyay s history throughout the cells and living quarters of the 19th century prison and police stables. The museum provides an intimate glimpse into the lives of Toodyay s early settler families, showing priceless family heirlooms including jewellery, furniture and tools. Visitors can see what toys the children used to entertain themselves and view period clothing from the museum s textile collection. Or you may wish to visit the infamous Native Cell and listen to the experiences of an Aboriginal prisoner to find out what life at the Gaol was really like. The Newcastle Gaol Museum also displays various exhibitions throughout the year. To find out what s on or to organise a tour, the Toodyay Visitor Centre can help you. Connor s Mill Built for the Irish ex-convict Daniel Connor 1870, Connor s Mill towers above Stirling Terrace. The building originally served as a steam driven flour mill and was later used as a power station. Today the Mill serves as a public museum, displaying working milling machinery that demonstrates how the early steam-milling process produced flour. One highlight of this beautifully restored building is the generator on the ground floor, which once served London in the Blitz and now serves as the engine that drives the mill. The recently refurbished uppermost floor of Connor s Mill is dedicated to the agricultural history of the Avon region. Wandering and Wildflowers Toodyay has several different walk trails, many of which are found in the Wandering and Wildflowers brochure at the Visitor Centre. The walks range from leisurely strolls to more energetic hikes. During Spring there are many opportunities to spot wildflowers. There are a number of walks around the town site. The Bilya River walk runs along the Avon River for 5.6km. Pelham Reserve has walks ranging from 200m to 2km, and also includes a lookout and other historical points of interest. 18 Victoria Plains a space to grow Victoria Plains encompasses a cluster of small towns in the north west of the Avon Valley, the most famous being the monastic township of New Norcia. It is an area renowned for its rich history, vibrant wildflower displays and thriving agriculture. Our Heritage First explored by the European Settlers in the late 1830 s, it did not take long for the area which was named after the newly crowned Queen to flourish. Travelling along the Great Northern Highway, one can imagine both the prosperity and the hardship experienced by the early settlers, with the remains of many early buildings and grave sites visible from the road. Captain Scully, the founding pioneer of Bolgart convinced the Catholic Bishop of Perth, that a party of missionaries led by two Spanish Benedictine Priests should venture north to Victoria Plains, where he had seen many Aborigines. Finding a colony of Aborigines on the banks of the Moore River, the group set up camp and New Norcia was soon founded as an Aboriginal Mission. In 1871, Victoria Plains was established as one of the states original Road Boards created to maintain roads and bridges. In those days Victoria Plains stretched from the Indian Ocean to the South Australian border and Carnamah in the north to Bolgart in the south. Today Victoria Plains sprawls over approximately 257,000 hectares and includes the townships of Bolgart, Calingiri, Piawaning, Yerecoin, New Norcia, Mogumber and Gillingarra. New Norcia New Norcia, a piece of Old Spain in the middle of the Australian bush, was settled in 1846 by Benedictine monks. The town boasts extravagant buildings, olive trees and church bells coupled with a peaceful tranquil atmosphere. Following settlement of the Mission, the monks built a village comprising a church, flour mills, schools, hostel, apiary, blacksmiths shop, olive shed and olive groves surrounding the monastery. Today the town is one of the great cultural heritage sites of Australia. Twenty seven of its buildings are classified by the National Trust and the town as a whole is registered on the National Estate. It continues to be home to a community of Benedictine monks who own and operate this truly unique settlement. Visit the Museum & Art Gallery, where an eclectic array of mission and monastery memorabilia is displayed alongside European religious art and contemporary Australian art works. Join a town tour and let the experienced guides unravel the unique history and show you the artwork hidden in the heritage buildings. Experience a 1500 year old tradition and join the Benedictine monks for prayers or meet a monk on Saturday in the parlour. Stroll up the hill to the grand New Norcia Hotel to linger over a home cooked meal or sip a glass of Abbey Ale. Taste some of the delicious New Norcia produce; freshly baked bread, medal winning olive oil grown in the 100 year old olive grove or delicious wines and ports from the Abbey wine label. 17 Victoria Plains

There are many other roads to travel and rural townships to discover within Victoria Plains. Why not take the time to explore them? Wyening Mission Wyening Mission Farm, between Bolgart and Calingiri, was established in 1878 by Bishop Salvado, founder of the Benedictine Community at New Norcia. It was run as a farming outpost and winery until the early 1970s. Six of the historic buildings remain, including the Mission House and Cellars, and retain the character of early mission farming and winemaking days. While the winery is no longer in production, the farm s history of food production continues today with a range of gourmet food products produced and marketed by the Young family. The buildings are available for functions, or guided tours are available for groups by prior appointment only. Visit wmfarm.com.au for details. Wyening Mission Produce is available for sale at New Norcia and the Shire of Victoria Plains Administration Office. Wildflowers and Wildlife Almost everywhere you turn throughout Victoria Plains you will be enthralled by the abundance and beauty of wildflowers.
