DIARY Annual General Meeting Tuesday 4 June 2013, Brisbane Newsletter Boccia State Championships Scott Elsworth (NSW) defeated Fiona Lyons (Qld) in a tiebreaker in the BC1/2 draw at the Boccia State Championships in Brisbane on 2-3 March. It was always going to be a close match, with both players remaining undefeated prior to the grand final. Scores were level at twoall after full time, however Elsworth narrowly edged out Lyons to win the title. Twenty-five athletes competed at the annual event, which also included competition in BC3, BC4 and Open singles. Full results from this event can be found on our website. 2 Representative Sport Boccia Australia National Titles Sunday 28 April - Thursday 2 May 2013 Sydney, New South Wales This year s national championships will include senior and junior competition for the first time. Details of team selection will be sent to interested athletes. The Queensland squad was selected at the 2013 Boccia State Championships in March. State Championships Inclusive Golf State Championships Friday 15 March 2013 Royal Pines Golf Club, Ross Street, Ashmore Golf Queensland will be hosting this event on the Gold Coast. For more information, contact Adrian Hewat at Golf Queensland on (07) Wheelchair Rugby State Championships Friday 26 - Sunday 28 April 2013 The Sports Centre, Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Boondall There will be action and excitement for players and spectators alike as The Bash showcases wheelchair rugby talent from around Australia - from developing players to Paralympians. Nominations will be sent to interested athletes and posted on our website in March. Athlete Funding Important changes to athlete funding guidelines The Athlete/Team Travel Funding Guidelines (for the period 1 February January 2014) have been updated and include some important changes. Unfortunately the amount available for athlete funding has had to be reduced from last year due to a reduction in fundraising income. General subsidies for national and international travel will be 50% (60% for one-on-one support) with a maximum subsidy available of $1300 (national) and $5000 (international). 3 National Leagues National Wheelchair Rugby Series (NWRS) This year, the National Wheelchair Rugby competition will continue as a development series to allow more player participation and development opportunities. Teams will compete in two tournaments, followed by a national championship event. This final event will be run according to the NWRL Rules and Regulations. Women s National Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL) Our state team, the MineCraft Comets, is set to go from strength to strength again in As well as the league rounds noted below, the team will participate in several training camps and enter a team in the Wheelchair Basketball State Championships ( The Classics ), in June. Round 1: 31 May - 2 June, Sydney Round 2: June, Perth Round 3: July, Sydney Round 4: 9-11 August, Brisbane Finals Round: 6-8 September, Sydney Tournament 1: April 2013, Melbourne Tournament 2: May 2013, Brisbane National Championship: August 2013 Sydney Nominations have closed, a selection camp has been held, and the squad will be announced in the next edition of the newsletter. 5 Classification Classification is an assessment process that separates athletes with similar levels of functional ability into groups or classes, so that they can compete in fair and equal competitions. Each sport has its own classification system to reflect its specific athletic skills and requirements. 6 Brisbane/Ipswich Sport (continued) Golf The 2013 golf calendar has been finalised with four golf days to be held at different golf clubs around the Brisbane area. These events will provide an opportunity for golfers of all abilities to enjoy the game, develop their skills, learn more about golf etiquette and experience perhaps a new or unfamiliar course. Each day will feature a 9-hole Canadian Couples event for developing or social golfers, and an 18-hole Singles Stroke event for experienced golfers. Handcycles can be used for recreation or competition, and are great for cross-training and charity bike rides. Please or call the Capricorn office if you would like to hire a handcycle. Volunteers urgently needed We urgently need volunteers to assist in Rockhampton in the following areas; office administration, program officers, coaches and team managers. Roles can start from as little as three hours per week. If you have time, please get in touch with the office. Basketball Rockhampton Social Sunday Competition Hegvold Stadium, Victoria Park Rockhampton Rockhampton Basketball are launching their first wheelchair basketball competition with the support of the Association. The competition will be played on Sunday evenings as part of the Social Sunday League. Team and individual nominations are now due. There was the success and celebration of Frenchville Fury winning the State Football Championships and the Frenchville Rockwheelers winning the Northern Challenge, as well as Frenchville Sports Club hosting the 2012 Australian Paralympic 7-a-side Football Championships. There was great individual success with David Barber (football) captaining Australia on another overseas trip, Ben Lorimer (pictured below) winning gold at the Schools National Athletics Championships, Ben Lodewikus winning the Northern Challenge MVP, as well as other members such as Helena Kidd (boccia), Geoff Geall (lawn bowls), Ruby Lawler (swimming), Joel Coughlan (table tennis), John Wood (cycling) and Briannah Holloway (athletics) continuing to perform at the elite level with distinction. page 10 page 9

10 Capricorn Region (continued) The Rockhampton community continues to grow and develop in its inclusivity in sport, with great leadership and support shown by Frenchville Sports Club, Rockhampton Basketball, Rockhampton Tenpin Bowl, Bike4life, Rocky River Run, Community Solutions and Rockhampton and Gladstone Regional Councils. The recreation program continues to go from strength to strength with many members enjoying Rockets and Cyclones season tickets, trips to the cricket, football and tennis as well as a comedy cruise. 12 Mackay Region Upcoming Events Blokarting 1pm Saturday, 9 March 2013 Cape Hillsborough Beach Mackay members will once again set sail in the blokarts at Cape Hillsborough. There will be three blokarts available, including the twoseater, so everybody will be able to sail all they want. There is no charge for this activity, but please advise Mackay office if you plan to come along. In a repeat of 2011, the region s Senior Athlete of the Year was London Paralympian David Nicholas and the Junior Athlete of the Year was Logan Powell. David s year included gold in the World Track Championships in Los Angeles in February 2012 and gold and bronze medals at the Paralympics in London. Social Dinner Friday, 22 March 2013 Souths Suburban Bowls Club Corner of Wardrop and Field Streets West Mackay Join other members from the Mackay region for a meal, a couple of drinks and some quality chat. RSVP to Mackay office by Wednesday 20 March. News Members Christmas Party The oriental dress theme at the 2012 Christmas Party produced some spectacular outfits and a few dodgy ones as well. Whatever possessed one attendee to dress as a spring roll?! Judge Donna Sumpter chose Megan Donnelly and Valerie Wright (pictured right)) as the best dressed. The evening sold out with 40 members and special guests, including River2Reef Charity Bike Ride organisers Evan and Louise Corry. Almost half the crowd extended the enjoyment and stayed the night at the venue, Dolphin Heads Resort. A special local presentation was made to Bev Rush, the Association s newest Life Member, which was a highlight of the evening. It was wonderful to see Mackay s four Life Members together at this event. Swimming Logan Powell was unable to attend the Christmas party - he had bigger things happening at the McDonald s Qld Swimming Championships. Logan set new national records for the 100m backstroke and 100m breast stroke, reinforcing his selection as Mackay s top junior athlete of page 12

13 Mackay Region (continued) Wheelchair Basketball The PCYC Mackay Machines competed at the Suncoast Spinners Competition in January, finishing a very creditable fifth in A Grade. As the team was only brought together for this tournament, with players meeting each other for the first time at the event, this was a solid result. A well-earned bonus was the Encouragement Award for Josh Nicholson after just four months in the sport. Anyone can have a go and there s no cost - just bring your beach gear. Please make sure you RSVP by Wednesday 21 March. Parasail the Strand and experience the thrill of floating 80m above the ocean. See amazing views of the Strand, Townsville, beaches and Magnetic Island. Duration of flight is 10 minutes. Cost: $40 for solo parasail, $70 for paired parasail. 15 Townsville Region (continued) News Powerlifting Congratulations to Townsville members Greg Moffat and Charles Taylor who both lifted personal best performances at the Powerlifting State Championships in Brisbane (16 February). Greg lifted 127kg in the 107kg division and Charles lifted 95kg in the 80kg division. Local volunteer wins state award Belated congratulations to Jake Cook, who took out the prestigious Col Marsh Volunteer of the Year award at the Association s 2012 Annual Awards in Brisbane. Jake has been the Townsville Committee Chairperson for the past two years, and took on the role as Boccia Program Officer for the local weekly boccia program last year.
