2. Introduction Gold Coast 2020 (the City s Corporate Plan) includes a range of aspirations for the City, including building a vibrant and strong community spirit where residents are proud of their city.theme 3.2 of Gold Coast We are proud of our city identified the aspiration to increase city pride over time, with checkpoints identified at 2016 and 2020 supported by a periodic city survey. The first survey in early 2014 provided a baseline for city pride (see Draft Corporate Plan City of Gold Coast consultation). The 2015 results demonstrate an increase in city pride and provide valuable qualitative information from the community on their priorities and preferences. The result of this survey will be included in the Gold Coast 2020 progress report published as part of the City s Annual Report Percentage of the community who feel proud of the Gold Coast 2014 baseline survey 2015 survey 2016 Interim checkpoint 2020 Checkpoint Very or extremely proud 47% 62% 65% 70% Some, very and extremely proud 83% 90% 88% 90% In addition, one of the key programs for the City is to develop a GC2018 legacy program to ensure the Gold Coast maximises opportunities and embraces civic pride. It was determined that this would be a good opportunity to ask Gold Coast residents if the prospect of hosting the GC2018 had any impact on their level of city pride and if they believed it would ultimately enhance the city s reputation. The City Pride survey also served to complement a recruitment drive for new membership to GCHYS which had been re-branded as the City Panel. 3. Community engagement objectives The objectives of the City Pride consultation are to: measure city pride targets set in Gold Coast 2020; understand the community s level of pride in the city; gain an insight into how the community feels about hosting the GC2018; successfully launch the City Panel on GCHYS; and promote the city as one of the most engaged cities in Australia. 4. Scope and timing The Community Engagement team s scope was to: manage and deliver community engagement requirements develop and manage a project landing page in GCHYS with associated survey assist with relevant marketing and public relations of the consultation; and provide Corporate Planning and Performance and the Commonwealth Games Unit with consultation results and a community engagement final report. Community engagement ran from 9 September to 20 November ispot:# v6 - CITY PRIDE SURVEY FINAL REPORT Page 8 of 75

Appendix A Open ended responses Spelling, grammar and punctuation are unedited. Comments which could identify a respondent have been redacted as well as slanderous and offensive content. How proud are you of the Gold Coast? I feel extremely proud when I tell people about the City. (162/525, 69 comments 1. I am very proud and lucky to be a GoldCoaster. 2. The Gold Coast is a fast growing modern city that opens it's arms to all people from all countries and cultures every single day. It's amazing beach lined area has something for everyone- age is no barrier everyone can enjoy it's attractions. The weather tops off the Gold Coast's appeal with mild winters and warm to hot summers making everyday living simply perfect. Gold Coast locals have a wonderful place to live so this makes for a happy welcoming community with an outdoor active lifestyle. 3. I would like to share that my currently nightly walk after work is embracing the Southport Broadwater. We take the walk from the Sundale bridge and up past the Southport Aquatic Centre. I love how I am seeing how multi-cultural the Gold Coast has become. On the weekends it is so pleasing to see large family gatherings and the smell of different foods that are being cooked. Also there is no littering it is like everyone respects the area and takes pride in keeping it pristine. It is also pleasing that all the entertainment is free and all the small children are having a great time. Congratulations Gold Coast on such a beautiful area. 4. Our beautiful clean beaches, fantastic surf and our outdoor lifestyle. We need to connect the Gold Coast by finishing our Oceanway Paths. Tugun to Bilinga is one example of 1.7 km that needs to be completed. We need to promote our Oceanway Paths for walkers and social riders around the world. It is such a popular thing to do and we need to promote this with tourists. When they come from big cities, the last thing they want to do on holidays is drive. Walking and riding on a scenic safe path is a great way to start. 5. A disgraceful city with no hope. So many other cities are far ahead in terms of transport and facilities. GO Card is a ripoff scheme that constantly fines people unnecessarily, rude bus drivers with no customer service ethics. Lag times between light and hard rail. No connections to Gold Coast airport. The one simple route to the airport via bus 700 was changed to numerous other routes. A complete hash of transport etc. Gold Coast can never be world class if it remains the same and as Brad Pitt described it eloquently it is a 'SCHLOCK TOWN' 6. I am a photographer and travel a lot internationally. I have photos of my house and the Gold Coast (beach, waves, Surfers Skyline & the Hinterland) to show my hosts and new friends overseas. 7. It has a great lifestyle, happy friendly people and loads of things to do. 8. The Gold Coast City Council do a fabulous job. 9. We would like to see the cruise terminal development to go ahead as soon as possible. The Gold Coast would be a marvelous stop over for tourists. 10. The Gold Coast is a diverse, vibrant city with a wonderful, casual beach culture that permeates all aspects of life. Recreation and sporting facilities are excellent. The City goes to a lot of effort to promote and inform residents and visitors about cultural activity and diversity. 11. Great beaches entertainment and everything is local, the new trams have also made it easier to explore all the coast easily. 12. I'm proud to show off the wonderful waterways right next to the glam and glitz of Surfers Paradise. I boast about the Broadwater and the great views across the Gold Coast Harbour toward Wavebreak Island and the Spit Peninsula. I'm proud to have called this my home for the past 50 ispot:# v6 - CITY PRIDE SURVEY FINAL REPORT Page 29 of 75

years. I'm proud to show on all my photo's of the Gold Coast and our delightful Broadwater that. these photo's are where the 2018 Commonwealth Games are taking place. I urge visitors, friends and past holiday makers to come back soon, BEFORE THEY DESTROY THE SPIT PENINSULA WITH HI RISE COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT. 13. I've lived here for nearly 18yrs and could not imagine living anywhere else. I've travelled extensively and I can honestly say by the end of the trip I am dying to get home to our city. We are very spoilt living on the GC. 14. As a kid, i always wanted to live here, but couldn't...then could at age 48 - yay!!! Been here ever since - am now 65 - a TAFE Teacher with GCIT since then and LOVE the city! My kids have moved away - I love the Broadwater too much to leave! 15. The scale of City activities provides for many varied options for residents and visitors. Large scale equals better and more extensive facilities. 16. I love the Gold Coast, the people, the ocean, the lifestyle, the healthy cafes, it makes you feel great to feel alive. 17. Except for the more seedy side eg drunkenness, drug taking and violence in parts of Surfer's Paradise. 18. It is a wonderful part of the world and a pleasure to call it home. 19. Still need to improve things though like the Bilinga to Tugun ocean way, heavy and light rail to the airport. Need to be careful not to over develop without appropriate parking and public transport infrastructure. 20. I have lived here since 2001 and call myself a gold coaster. I am proud that we are progressive, modern and energetic. I'm not proud of our rates of violence, especially towards children and women. 21. I believe this city is great and with the right leadership and ongoing public consultation it can be even better. 22. "I find it hard to understand why successive Queensland Governments have rejected and rubbished perfectly sound economic growth projects in favour of approving similar proposals for Brisbane." 23. it's something we all need to do feel proud and stop all the bad publicity that comes out of here 24. The trees, plantings, flora and fauna enhance the natural beauty. I was hoping they would assemble the blow-up inflated plastic castles and paraphernalia on the Broadwater next to the swimming enclosure. The children have lots of activities and diversions with the swings, trampoline cushion and waterpark and grasslands. The blow-up castles & large monstrosities are an eyesore. 25. It annoys me that the media like to push their negative agenda on the Gold Coast constantly but you cant do much about that unfortunately. 26. Not as much as years[ 40 + ] ago before the city grew too large with all the heavy traffic and not so nice people intruding on what was a very relaxed peaceful lifestyle. 27. I use Instgram each day to post photos I take of the Gold Coast. It is seen by thousands of people all around the world each time I post. 28. I was born on the Gold Coast and lived there until I was 7 then returned as an adult resident of two years now, so I feel strong emotional and historical ties to the Gold Coast. 29. The Gold Coast people are friendly and helpful -makes for a pleasant place to live. Throw in the magic beaches, the fantastic weather and the myriad of things to entertain and enjoy - what a great place to live. We've been here since 1972, raised our kids here and now watching the grandkids enjoy the 'Coast. 30. Let's face it. Everyone South of the border comes here to unthaw and enjoy the magic length and pristine waters of our beaches (I know we did), everything else is a bonus. ispot:# v6 - CITY PRIDE SURVEY FINAL REPORT Page 30 of 75

31. We have the best of all worlds with our beaches, mountains and climate. We now have a relatively safe city and one that has the potential to grow 32. "The weather the beaches are our main attraction, everything else follows Please dont put shadows on the sand with big buildings" 33. "The GC has so much diversity for every one who lives here and also for visitors. In the last 5-10 years it has become a cultural hub and it is exciting times to see it continue to evolve.everything seemed to happen up the northern end but finally we are getting festivals, markets and events down the southern end but still staying a lot more laid back." 34. Living on the gold coast is great. 35. I want the Gold Coast to become a smarter city by ensuring there is disability access on all new houses and other buildings. All new houses/buildings must utilise cost effective solar energy and have an energy efficiency rating such as those required in Canberra. 36. The needs of the residents of the city are looked after really well. however, The energy of the world is changing and perhaps we could be a leader in that as well. I'm a down to earth person. We could embrace Mother Earth more. We could communicate with her more by placing medicine wheels in the parks...they are a form of communication with the earth. They create an energy for people to benefit from. A Labyrinth in one of the larger parks would be absolutely amazing. ssydney has one in Centennial Park...it's incredible to walk it. We could show the world that we are progreesive in all ways...including spiritually. 37. I have travelled the world, came up from Sydney approximately 16 years now.i love the Gold Coast and want to see it continue to grow for future generations migrating here.i cried tears of joy when we got the games and would love the cruise ship terminal to go ahead.sydney suburbs are not all that as councils are to strict but here on the Gold Coast they have allowed developers to go ahead a lot more and look at the Gold Coast now.my business is in Mental health. 38. Whenever I am out and about I always share among my networks, friends and family how amazing the Gold Coast is! 39. "Read the Vision 20/20 plans for our great city.maintain the three story limit on The Spit. Enhance, not destroy, our wonderful lifestyle." 40. Must be one of the Best Places in Australia to live...and Australia must be one of the Best Countries in the World to live. 41. Action needs to be taken regarding skate boarders in general in Southport CBD most of these are adults skaters travelling fast on the roads dodging cars and pedestrians going about their business. It is dangerous and a worry for older people (there are many of us here) to see how close they are to being crashed into on a regular basis. Some time ago I was injured by a bike on a footpath running into me from behind at speed. Bikes are now using footpaths when they have a bike path available to them a few feet away. Pedestrians are not safe anymore. 42. It's all about our sun, surf & sand, but we must remember our wonderful hinterland too! 43. The Gold Coast has really lifted it's game and become quite the smart, clean, city. It has certainly moved with the times but we need to keep this momentum going. Big shame about the cruise ship terminal as this would have been an enormous boost to the city and industry. Have you seen how much local produce/wine these ships take on board at the ports they land at? So many local businesses would have had a huge boost plus of course the employment especially in the young would have be great. Keep it up Mayor! 44. It is the best place on earth, perfect weather, great fresh, clean environment, great facilities, economical services, proactive council, wonderful wildlife that co-exist harmoniously with residents, diverse, expansive waterways. 45. I would dearly love to see our city with a Cruise Ship terminal and I would also like that the majority of Gold Coast residents who want this project to be listened to instead on the small minority against it always getting the publicity in the media and always having decisions go their way. ispot:# v6 - CITY PRIDE SURVEY FINAL REPORT Page 31 of 75

46. As I have spent most of my life on the Gold Coast, I have enjoyed seeing the growth and change. Today I am very proud of he city that we have become and I believe we live in the best city in the world! 47. I moved from Ferntree Gully, Victoria in Feb to a Retirement Village in Southport and have never looked back, I absolutely love the Gold Coast. 48. we moved here 27 years ago from a suburb in Sydney and haven't looked back. our family has grown up and have their own families. 49. "However, sometimes I don't feel as proud as I would like, when I see the amount of rubbish that enters our waterways. I see too much of it and have voiced my concerns before, but it has been ignored.i am preparing to video record the worst of it and put it on you tube. Maybe then someone will listen." 50. I am independently wealthy, and could pick to live anywhere in the world. I decided to emigrate from the UK to Australia, and of all the cities in Australia I picked the Gold Coast. I have been proven right in my decision, it's the best place in the world! 51. "Although. I think our city council mayor should keep his election promise of kerbside rubbish clean up How does he think pensioners with little income using public transport get their old washing machines to the ""dump"" lots of residents rely on kerb side cleans up & votedfor Tom for that reason " 52. Especially now that we have a committee that works to create business and jobs for the people. Gold Coast is a beautiful place - amongst the best in the world...and we want to keep it that way. For too long now businesses have suffered and places have closed down which makes the place look like a white elephant. 53. The City is getting better and better each year. 54. As an ex Syneysider I am awed at the wonderful state of the parks and bbq grounds around the Gold Coast and the way they are continually maintained. It is a credit to the Council. 55. I am extremely proud of the gold coast because it has so much to give to everyone to lives here and for those who pass through. 56. While I am proud of the Gold Coast I was embarrassed during a recent overseas holiday with approx. 140 other Australians most of whom did not like our present image and said we are intent on ruining a beautiful city. A number of these people had previously owned apartments on the GC but had since chosen to holiday in other Australian coastal areas. In particular they cited too many high rise buildings, traffic chaos, and a lack of respect for our city's natural features, eg the Broadwater. 57. In particular they cited too many high rise buildings, traffic chaos, and a lack of respect for our city's natural features, eg the Broadwater. 58. I walk 7 to 9 kms every day & see council staff out sanding & painting park benches, topdressing & fertilizing parks & gardens, cleaning beaches and generally cleaning up our amazing facilities. This is around Tugun to Nobbys Beach. Having lived in Tweed area for 10 years I find the attention to detail on the Gold Coast beyond compare to the Tweed coast.love my Goldy. Every day I walk I can't help thinking how lucky I am to live here. 59. And even more proud of the beautiful Currumbin area that I live in and have grave concerns over the possibility of a Mosque in our Community. This proposed development, should it go ahead, will have dire consequences to the Currumbin community, business and surrounds. I am grateful and support Council in its refusal to approve this development and hope that Council continues to stand firm on this issue. ispot:# v6 - CITY PRIDE SURVEY FINAL REPORT Page 32 of 75

60. "Being retired, the Gold Coast is ideal for our families to visit us during their holidays.we are delighted with the climate and life in such a wonderful Resort." 61. I am a 5th generation resident and am very proud of the amenitiesw we provide and the cleanliness of our environment. The natural environment inspires me to tell others of the wonders they can see here. 62. I think Mayor Tom Tate has done amazing things for our city the only thing we need to do now is get rid of the Ice users and Domestic Violence. 63. There is no denying the Gold Coast s undertaking to hold the 2018 Commonwealth Games is a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase not only the Gold Coast, but to show the South East Queensland and North East NSW to an incredible number of sports people teams and supporters, Australians and visitors from around the World.Whilst most of these people shall be accommodated within the local region, I am sure that this area shall only be a stepping stone for these visitors to view our vast and wondrous country.as a born and bred Queenslander and a Gold Coast resident of some forty years my body & soul are filled with pride to become a small part in this wonderful event.we do all of course, individuals, local, State and particularly Commonwealth Government, all have an equal part to play whether it be by support, actions, facilitations and/or funding, all small actions are as equal to the largest.the Gold Coast is going to be on display. We need to ensure we have a friendly city, a helpful city and a clean & safe city for our visiting brothers & sisters.as we are almost at the end of 2015 time is of the essence in carrying out major infra structure work, however, it is pleasing to see our new Prime Minster Malcolm Turnbull has agreed to funding the light rail system, as I am sure there will be large numbers of visitors arriving from Accommodation areas to the north.it is however disappointing not to have the light rail extended to Coolangatta Airport and to have a final and well overdue upgrade of airport facilities for the many and ever increasing aircraft arrivals & departures.perhaps it is not too late and certainly within the overall budget to construct the Tugun to Bilinga Oceanway, thus giving all visitors and of course local residents the opportunity to have a continuous walk cycle and wheel chair path form the Currumbin Creek environs to the Point Danger headland and beyond. There has been an overwhelming desire by a vast majority of people to have this project carried out.to all involved with the 2018 Commonwealth Games, either directly or indirectly let them be applauded.let the games begin." 64. I love the Gold Coast. I lived here 40 years ago when it was so small everyone knew each other. It still has that holiday feel and now I've seen and lived in countries overseas I think the Gold Coast has everything and more to offer. We have superb beaches, beautiful weather all year round, superb restaurants. I brought my children up here and they are so successful now becuase of the experiences they had on the Gold Coast. We started the Nerang Junior Rugby Union Club which has now grown into a thriving club. I could not wait to come back here, 65. "Lets bring back the metre maids. They were so good for the Gold Coast as a tourist promotion. Visitors loved them. There wer so may uique characters who lived here including Regina King and Paula Stafford.I brought my children up here. We started the Nerang Rugby Union Juniors Club. The Juniors team was sponsored by Arthur Earle who gave the land to the Nerang Rugby Union Club which ahs epnded the juniors to. In the inaugural year the Juniours won the Premiership. The Gold Coast has a rich history. I was full of characters.i love living here. Having lived overseas I have seen it is one of themost beautiful places in the world. My son attended TSS, The Gold Coast wa so safe and fun for childre and adults.as a holiday destination it had a happy atmosphere and was on eof the most friendly plces I have lived. Every Sundya there were barbeques at the neogbours who took it in turns. I love the zgold Coast." 66. This is the place to be! Our family meets many visitors to the Coast through work and the council plays a huge roll by providing low cost and free activities. Visitors from other states can't believe it! This includes Brisbane visitors on holidays. 67. Gold Coast is a great family place and tourist destination ispot:# v6 - CITY PRIDE SURVEY FINAL REPORT Page 33 of 75

68. "Proactive & engaging GCCC covering engagement in many areas. EG Tom Tate'sCenior Focus on the Silver card free ride program.why not extend to Light Rail over selected periods. G: Card can be programmed to credit fares accordingly?" 69. People are friendly and courteous here. I feel very proud when I tell people about the City (162/525, 55 comments) 1. Clean up the rogue police and keep the bikies out of the state. 2. The City's lifestyle is amazing. The wonderful parks, natural areas, beaches and the amazing active and healthy lifestyle we have here is why I love having my family grow up in the City. 3. "The Gold Coast is one of Australia's gems. Our clean air, clean water, clean beaches, large open green spaces, parks and gardens provides our residents and visitors with the basics for a wonderful life. The addition of our medical education and research facilities is putting us on the ""edu map"". Our local council is also playing a large part and in particular I'd like to congratulate Dawn Critchlow et al on the Broadwater Parkland and aquatic center etc. My wife and I walked from the Spit to Tweed Heads along the beaches last year... We saw little to no rubbish, clean sand, clean air (apart from the area near the airport). Having seen a lot of overseas beaches I can readily assert that we are among the top tier for beaches alongside residential areas." 4. "I love living on the Gold Coast and enjoy being surrounded by beautiful beaches and canals. The people are friendly and have a welcoming attitude.i am embarrassed when my family visit from Sydney and observe the amount of empty shops around Surfers Paradise.I remember when Surfers Paradise was the number one destination for many Australians.I hope in the future it once again regains that title." 5. I am proud of the City because of its natural fauna and flora. I do not like the way it is governed by the Council, so that makes me not proud. 6. So many lovely things to do here e.g. the Swells sculpture etc. glorious weather and genuinely decent people in the main, and it is so beautiful but the ugly underside, drugs, domestic violence, not restricted to the GC of course but prevalent here,is a huge problem. 7. The fact that the Gold Coast has evolved from a "country town' to a large metropolis says a lot for the development and progress of the city. I have seen and had to do with the Gold Coast all of my life and have seen most changes. 8. Massive purge needed against organised crime in Gold Coast.as a retired U.K.police officer of 26 years,i am quite perturbed by the increase in crime over the almost 7 years we have lived here. It would be better to have the crime rates down before the games and visitors feeling safe, rather than having to have the place swamped with police officers from all over Qld patrolling the streets, giving a bad impression to visitors to our city. 9. I think the violence of recent times and the bikie situation do little to enhance our wonderful city. 10. Would be more proud if the minority groups would not win every time and let the Gold Coast grow and progress 11. I am so proud of so many things about the Gold Coast, however l can't ignore the fact I am concerned about the level of crime. On a lighter note, why is it so hard to find a place with a live band that isn't a pub or happening during the day? I'm talking about a fancy club, no cover charge, offering live bands that play funk/jazz which a lot of middle-aged people want, and which tourists here for the Games will want as an option (Jupiter's Atrium Bar is NOT what I mean). 12. People still have the idea its just a party city full of trouble. They don't see past Surfers Paradise and don't know that Surfers is actually a family friendly place too. 13. However, I feel that the Southern Gold Coast, the GATEWAY TO QUEENSLAND, requires more attention. The Gold Coast is not only the northern part. 14. I am very proud of our beaches, our wonderful hinterland - but sometimes not so proud of developments on floodplains, and changes to agreed planning scheme in areas zoned for ispot:# v6 - CITY PRIDE SURVEY FINAL REPORT Page 34 of 75

conservation, low density or low rise buildings. It makes it seem like it's a developers haven rather than a community that is happy to share with great tourism. 15. I think there have been significant changes made over the years but I still think the northern Gold Coast needs a big tidy up. 16. Although I am not a fan of general descriptions, I think 'opportunities' perfectly sums up how I feel about the Gold Coast as a whole. Since becoming a resident nearly 10 years ago, opportunities have abounded in the areas of life choice, career, personal relationships -as well as education, sport and career opportunities for our children. There is a general 'I will happily do what I need to do until I get to do what I want' approach to life by Gold Coasters. Rubbing shoulders with those who are successful, wealthy 'enjoyers' of life is a great motivator. 17. Fantastic city in which to live. Imperative to contain sleaze and violence factors in order for this to remain. 18. It's really good that the Gold Coast is hosting the games as it will give the Gold Coast a world wide profile. It will also ecouraging tourism for our lovely city. People from overseas will see how lucky we people are living on the Gold Coast, and our high standed of living. 19. Many people spend a lot of money holidaying on the Gold Coast. I, along with the half million residents we have in our city, have had the luxury of living, working and playing here every day. Like anything that is good, it attracts a negative element along with it. In general, I feel we should not be complacent or take for granted the environs we get to call our home. 20. We have the best climate, beaches, coastline in Australia, but we are well behind in basic infrastructure, public transport and local roads and southern end of the M1 highway is a laughing stock. If we and or state/federal government spent money in these areas we would definitely rival the top Australian cities/towns for most livable city. 21. This is a great place to live - but not for pedestrians and cyclists - I am not proud of our Council efforts for them. 22. The Gold Coast is the best place on earth. It has the sea, sand, rivers, city, mountains, great infrastructure and perfect weather. It is idyllic! 23. I am proud of the Gold Coast but think we still need to do more to protect the natural environment here. I had an international visitor from Switzerland come for a visit this year and she wasn't interested in the shopping or amusement parks. She loved the Gold Coast Hinterland and our beautiful beaches. She loved Currumbin Sanctuary over Taronga Zoo (in Sydney) and her best memory was taking a walk through the Coombabah Wetlands Environmental Park and watching the sunset at Coombabah Creek. 24. She loved Currumbin Sanctuary over Taronga Zoo (in Sydney) and her best memory was taking a walk through the Coombabah Wetlands Environmental Park and watching the sunset at Coombabah Creek. 25. If only we can alleviate the crime rate 26. "It is mostly a great place to live and work in every large city has it's problems and we handle ours mostly with efficiency and promptness " 27. The crime and drug problems go hand in hand with any community now days but I do get very upset that there is so much of it on the GC. 28. I was prouder when the Gold Coast was the leader in investment and big projects but it seems that the Brisbane State Government does not like to see that as they block every major project while annoucing similar projects on the brown stain they call a river a week later. We need a plan to get major employers on the coast. The carpark that is the M1 of a morning shows that we need employment and investment on the coast. ispot:# v6 - CITY PRIDE SURVEY FINAL REPORT Page 35 of 75
