Some of the young Black Swans will be hot property later in the year when AFL clubs consider their draft choices. However, not all those elevated to the top level come from the under-age competition. Indeed, there is a band of emerging talent in league ranks who could do with the chance in the top grade. That is one of the exciting elements to the WAFL. Each year there are teens and youths still pushing to be the best footballers they can. So The Football Budget has taken a look at the first third of the season and highlighted a posse of young guns worth keeping an eye on during the rest of the 207 campaign. Bailey Banfield (Claremont) From Broome via Scotch College, Banfield has now become established in the Claremont engine room. At 88cm and around 89kg Banfield has the potential to be a powerful midfielder who can break congestion. The 9-year-old was being considered for a rookie list spot last November but has bounced back from being overlooked to average more than 20 possessions per match this year. 5 s keep g in WAFL By Ross Lewis 5 Jesse Adamini (East Fremantle) The Sharks knew Adamini would have an impact on their line-up following his fairestand-best season in the reserves last year. His 25-possession, seven-mark return in the derby two rounds ago showed he was comfortable in the big matches. After all, he made his debut last year in the WA Day derby. Although around 78kg the 20-year-old from Geraldton is a renowned within East Fremantle for his tackling. Shayne Hille (East Perth) Just becoming a league regular in a team chock full of AFL-listed players is something of an achievement. But the lightly-built 20-year-old has amassed 27 league appearances in three seasons and earned a spot in the East Perth midfield. Has added some speed to the Royals but Hille also loves to drift forward to kick a goal. From Morley JFC. John Levien (Perth) The Kenwick product was specifically called up to make his debut in round four because of his defensive pressure. He has stayed in the top team. The 8-year-old has been a part of the Demons junior academies and has developed into a closechecking opponent. Levien played every match with the WA under-8s team last season. He didn t start playing football until he was 2.» Shayne Hille Liam Ryan (Subiaco) AFL recruiters don t have to look too hard for video of Ryan. Almost every week he features in the league mark of the year contenders. He also kicked 40 goals in 206 with eyebrows raised after he was overlooked for the draft. But the 20-year-old went back to the Lions with the right spirit and has again been a shining light in the competition with another 24 goals from six matches. Sharks salute stalwart Stephen While it is his league record that will be celebrated this round, East Fremantle will also be lauding Andrew Stephen s overall service to the club. Apart from being born into the Sharks brethren because of the link to the club through his father, Peter, a club champion, the younger Stephen has been around Moss St for a while. According to the Sharks Stephen played around 50 colts matches and as many in the reserves before cementing his place in the league line-up. The 28-year-old defender has gone on to follow his father in winning a Lynn Medal and also represented the State. And now he will notch his 50th match in the battle with West Perth. No teammate on the East Fremantle 207 playing list has worn the guernsey more times than Stephen. Taryce Stewart (Swan Districts) He made his league debut last season but Taryce Stewart has been far more confident as a top team regular this year. His scoring production has increased, contributing 2 goals in the past four matches with Swans. The product of Midvale, who has already earned high praise from teammate Dave Ellard, was named in the DEPPRO State Academy earlier in the week.» Andrew Stephen (EF)

6 6 by Sean Cowan Collectables During 207, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home. It s not often a discovery excites me as much as this week s does. While ferretting around in another collector s cupboards recently, I came across a very rare WAFL album from the 970s. Now, to give you some idea of its rarity, I had seen just two up to this point. Ever. And both of those belonged to Melbourne-based collector John. I suppose I shouldn t have been so surprised to find it where I did. Colin, of Meadow Springs, has been collecting since 947. As a boy, Colin lived in Pemberton and was obsessed with sport to such an extent that he kept everything that covered any type of sport. He even cut out the sporting columns from all the newspapers and kept them in neat scrapbooks, which he still has to this day. He still makes the scrapbooks. When I visited, he had this week s clippings ready to be glued in. Anyway, back to the Sports Action album, which is also really attractive. Sports Action was a Friday newspaper that was run by Lang Hancock s Sunday Independent. And, early in the 970 season, it issued an A3-sized eight-page album inside its weekly issue. In subsequent weeks, the paper ran colour photographs of WAFL stars that were to be cut-out and pasted into the album. Now, Colin s album was missing two players - one from Subiaco and one from East Perth. On discovering the missing photos, I knew it was unlikely they would ever turn up. Then I remembered that John, who had also had his albums since he was a child, believed only 46 of the 48 photos were ever issued because one edition of the paper was not printed during a strike. So, I can rest easy knowing that this one is as complete an album as it s possible to have. It s hard to believe we re already one-third of the way through the WAFL season. Usually, by this stage, there have been heaps of great auctions and sales to report on. Sadly, that s not the case this season. I am putting this down to times being tight and people being unwilling to offer items for sale when they know they are unlikely to fetch what they once might have. This week was no exception, with the only sales of any significance being for some Football Budgets that were sold in bulk. A pile of Budgets from 987 sold for the reasonable price of $49, while nine Budgets from 974 sold for a bit of a bargain at $50. I have been made aware of some sales on the private market, though, the most interesting of which involved a 970s East Fremantle bag, made by Burley and sponsored by UK sports manufacturers Gola. It s only the second such bag I ve seen and it went for $200. Now it s on to the promise I made last week concerning some South Fremantle items I obtained from a fellow collector a while back. I ve shown some of these items to you already, but I did say I would feature others in the coming weeks. And what better to start with than a nice stack of Walsh s photos from 96, which were given away at Walsh s Menswear shops. These are really rare and this pile included about 20 that I hadn t seen before. I ve now been able to document the existence of 40 photos in this set over the past five years, but there s no clear information about how many were originally made. I suspect it s about 240. If you know of any photos that look like they might form part of the same set, I would love to hear from you. Other items of interest relate to South s glory years in the 940s and 50s. Perhaps the prize was a 947 premiership dinner menu, which was signed by the Southerners team of greats like Clive Lewington, Scranno Jenkins, Bob Mason, Bernie Naylor, Steve Marsh, Frank Treasure the list just goes on and on. And a football-shaped 20-page program for South Fremantle s jubilee celebrations in 959 was a beauty, too. It named every single member who was invited to the function, including my great-great uncle and Souths player from the 90s and 20s Bill McGilvray Snr. If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at blackswan@iinet.net. au or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 9, Subiaco WA His website is at com and he also can be contacted on

8 8 Entertainment KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD (ROADSHOW FILMS) Acclaimed filmmaker Guy Ritchie brings his dynamic style to the epic fantasy action adventure King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. Starring with Hunnam (FX s Sons of Anarchy) and Oscar nominee Law (Cold Mountain, The Talented Mr. Ripley) are Astrid Bergès-Frisbey (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) as Mage; Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond, In America) as Bedivere; Aidan Gillen (HBO s Game of Thrones) as Goosefat Bill; and Eric Bana (Star Trek) as Arthur s father, King Uther Pendragon. 9 CLAREMONT v PEEL Claremont Recent history: The Tigers are sliding down the slippery slope after consecutive losses to the three top teams in the league. The question mark: Can Claremont straighten up in attack? The Tigers forward line gets plenty of ball supply just not always in the best places. Keep the binoculars on: Albany product Morgan Davies has received another opportunity at league level and his 20 possessions against Swan Districts last round indicated he can cement a place in the team. by Ross Lewis Peel Recent history: Watch out Claremont, Peel is coming through. If the Tigers are enduring a lean trot then Thunder s four straight defeats has alarm bells ringing in Mandurah. The question mark: Will the Thunder be able to run out the match? Opposition line-ups have outpointed the team in last quarters. Keep the binoculars on: His strawberry blond hair makes him a standout but Blair Bell s ability to get the ball into Peel s 50m zone is a key for the Thunder. Previews EAST FREMANTLE v WEST PERTH East Fremantle Recent history: The misery abated for a week with East Fremantle enjoying the bye after five straight defeats, including the derby, to bring in the new season. The question mark: How many players are going to endorse the decision to extend coach Rob Wiley s contract with strong actions on the field? Keep the binoculars on: Midfielder George Hampson had an interrupted start to the season but showed with four goals in the derby two rounds ago that he can lift the Sharks. 9 West Perth Recent history: Added Perth to the list of three consecutive victims and sits nicely in the top five with a 4-2 record. The question mark: Who will notch 40 possessions this round? Two weeks ago, Aaron Black had 47 touches and last round Shane Nelson had 4 disposals. Keep the binoculars on: Former Swan Districts player Rudy Riddoch kicked six goals in his third league match for West Perth last round.» Keifer Yu SWAN DISTRICTS v SUBIACO Swan Districts Recent history: Those waiting for Swan Districts to show it isn t a genuine premiership contender are getting old quick. The Black Ducks are 5-. The question mark: What impact will the loss of veteran and assistant coach Ryan Crowley have on the team? His on-field guidance will be greatly missed. Keep the binoculars on: Ricky Cary again stood stall for the black and whites in attack with five goals last week. Cary has 4 for the season. The battle: At least one club will snap a losing streak that had threatened to derail its season. Who it will be will say a lot about the playing character of both clubs. Recent data suggests Claremont as favourite because the efforts of Ryan Lim, Keifer Yu, Jack Bradshaw and Beau Maister indicated there is still plenty of life in the Tigers. On the other hand Peel needs a spark. While Sam Collins and Cam Sutcliffe are solid in the back half, the Thunder needs to find more avenues to scoring than just Leroy Jetta, who booted four of the team s five goals last round. Subiaco Recent history: Since dropping the opening round to South Fremantle, Jarrad Schofield s men have gone 5-0 and are again hovering near the top of the WAFL tree. The question mark: Has Jordan Lockyer done enough to book a State guernsey later this month? His defensive work has been outstanding for the Lions. Keep the binoculars on: The senior players have been strong but newcomers, such as Liam Baker last round, are taking their league chances with both hands. The battle: While there is nothing better than Swans supporters relishing success, this contest with the Lions will give a clear indication of whether the black and whites can be a force in September. With Matt Rogers, Xavier Ellis, Ricky Cary and Taryce Stewart up forward and David Ellard down back, Swans have answered most of the questions asked of them in 207. However, Subiaco s Kyal Horsley, Chris Phelan, Clancy Wheeler, Wayde Twomey and Leigh Kitchin have hard bodies and wise heads and will make Swans work that much harder for everything on the field. The battle: West Perth has been doing enough to win while East Fremantle hasn t been doing enough to be successful. Those circumstances reach flash point in this round. Firstly, if the Sharks are to triumph they must stop Aaron Black, Luke Meadows, Shane Nelson, Kody Manning and Aidan Lynch from being allowed to control proceedings. East Fremantle is hopeful Liam Anthony will ready to return following injury and he will need to combine with Jayden Schofield, Matthew Jupp and Jonathan Marsh to raise the Sharks performance a cog or two. PERTH v SOUTH FREMANTLE Perth Recent history: Perth has become like a pesky little brother. The Demons might not have the talent to always overpower the big boys but their persistence can be an issue. The question mark: Do the Demons possess the ability to shift into top gear? The team had the chance to defeat West Perth in the final quarter last round but couldn t lift the standard. Keep the binoculars on: Brennan Stack has plenty of experience and will know he will have to back up his seven-goal haul last round with another attacking forward line display against the Bulldogs. But he needs help. The battle: This will be a struggle. Perth has that ability to make rivals work that much harder for a win yet aren t often enough able to avoid defeat. Devin McFarlane s improvement, the speed of Corey Byrne and Cody Ninyette in attack and Brennan Stack s hot foot have been boosts for the Demons. But they will have to dig deep against the Bulldogs, who are enjoying dominant service from defender Dylan Main, midfielder Shane Hockey and forward Cory Dell Olio in their surge to the top of the ladder. South Fremantle Recent history: Sitting pretty as the competition s top dogs with a 5- record. The defeat was the shock result against Swan Districts in round two. The question mark: Has South Fremantle found its kicking boots? The Bulldogs registered 22 behinds in the derby with 9 coming off the boot of players. Keep the binoculars on: Ruckman Brock Higgins has returned to the league team after starting the season in the reserves. He showed against East Fremantle he was still a valuable member of the South Fremantle unit.» Brennan Stack

Field umpire Gabby Simmonds, boundary umpire Claire Knight and goal umpire Tiana Fry will represent Western Australia at the championships. WA Football Commission Umpire Manager Darryl Sinclair said the three umpires were very excited about the opportunity of umpiring in the annual tournament. We have a complete contingent of female umpires travelling to Sydney for the championships this month who are all extremely excited and honoured to represent WA, Sinclair said. WA Umpire Academy coach Greg Gilbee said it was a fantastic opportunity for the girls to showcase their skills on the national stage. This is both a professional and personal development opportunity for these young aspiring female umpires who will get to apply the skills and knowledge they have learnt through the academy, in a national setting, Gilbee said. All three umpires officiated in the inaugural AFL Women s competition under the coaching of Sinclair, AFL National Umpire Development Manager Adam Davis and AFL boundary umpire coach Geoff O Neill. Simmonds has aslo umpired more than 20 West Australian Football League (WAFL) colts games, and Knight has umpired more than 20 WAFL league matches. O Neill said Simmonds exhibits outstanding stamina and resilience to deal with challenging situations. Knight s ability to run out games under fatigue is one of her strengths. Knight was selected as a boundary umpire in the AFL Women s competition because of her extensive knowledge of the game and her resilience when under pressure, O Neill said. Fry, who has been a regular WAFL reserves goal umpire, reads the play well and has the potential to umpire at higher levels. Goal umpire coach John Marrapodi said Fry s standard of umpiring exceeds expectations and she has a great future ahead of her. Milestones: AFL and WAFL boundary umpire Adam Bastick will umpire his 200th game when Fremantle play Essendon at Domain Stadium. WAFL field umpire Ryan Shelton, who was recruited from Swan Districts in 2006, umpires his 00th game this round of the WAFL.
