3 From Small Beginnings Come Great Things FFrom its modest beginning in 1914, in Kolkata, with hundred and five members, Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) has grown into a strong fraternity with more than twenty thousand members till date and stands on the threshold of its Centennial Celebration! ISCA was conceived with an objective of advancing, promoting and furthering the cause of science in India, thus stimulating scientific research in the country. For the last 99 years, the annual meet of Indian Science Congress(ISC) has been witnessing a unique confluence of the scientific fraternity who share the platform to discuss the key issues pertaining to various streams of science and technology. The recommendations resulting out of this brainstorming offer a framework for development of science in general and National Science Policy, in particular. Luminous personalities like Acharya P. C. Ray, Sir J.C. Bose, Prof. C.V. Raman, Prof. S. N. Bose, Prof. M.N. Saha, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Homi Bhabha, Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, Dr. R. A. Mashelkar etc. have spearheaded various editions of Indian Science Congress. And now, keeping in view, the special significance of the centenary year of ISC, the Hon ble Prime Minister of India has assumed the helm of the 100 ISC as its General President. This celebrated edition of ISC would bring in total recall of the zeitgeist GP Message It is an honour and a privilege for me to assume the position of the General President of the Indian Science Congress Association in its centennial year. I receive this honour with deep humility towards the scientific community and accept this challenge with a profound sense of responsibility towards the teeming millions of our country, for whom science could be a force of transformation from pover ty, ignorance, hunger and disease. It is imperative for the community of scientists to remain rooted to our reality and be cognizant of our own problems, to make inclusive growth and development a reality. I hope the centenary celebration of the ISC will also be an occasion to recall the social consciousness that inspired the founding fathers of the Indian Science Congress Association. This is why the theme chosen for the Science Congress for the year is Science for Shaping the Future of India. The 100th annual session of the Congress has been convened in Kolkata between 3 and 7 January, This is the city where the journey began for the Association. We should observe the centenary year in the most productive and purposeful manner. I invite the scientific community of India to come out and shape the future of modern India. I extend a warm welcome to all those who would participate in the Centenary Year events of the Indian Science Congress. " associated with the implicit science movement that has thrived in our country for so long! ( Extract from GP's message in the first circular)
