1 Itinerary prepared for: Texas A&M New Zealand & Sydney, Australia 28 December January 2019 Note: Please ensure you read ahead so you are prepared for upcoming activities. Friday 28 December Day 1: Christchurch Group flight arrives Kia Ora! Welcome to New Zealand. Your New Zealand guide will greet you at the airport with a 'Welcome Texas A&M' sign and direct you to your coach when the group has gathered. City tour and transfer to accommodation by Cityline Coach Including a stop at a supermarket to purchase supplies and visit an ATM. You will also need to purchase a packed lunch, snacks and water to take on your service-learning day tomorrow, we encourage the use of refillable reusable drink bottles for the duration of your visit - tap water in the South Island is some of the purest in the world! 2:00 PM Check-in to accommodation Due to your early arrival check in may not be immediately available and you may store your luggage until check in time at 2pm. Due to another large groups arrival all students will need to check in between 2pm and 2.45pm please. As you will be departing for Willowbank immediately after the orientation please ensure you take everything you need with you (including a sweater or jacket if required as the cultural performance is outdoors) to the orientation. 2:45 PM - 3:45 PM Welcome and orientation This will be led by TBA from AUIP and will be held in the conference room at the YMCA. Please bring everything you will need for the evening session to the orientation as the coach will depart for Willowbank at the conclusion of the orientation. 3:50 PM Depart for activity by Cityline Coach 4:30 PM - 7:30 PM Willowbank Wildlife Reserve - Guided kiwi tour and Ko Tane Maori cultural performance plus dinner 60 Hussey Road, Northwood, Christchurch, Phone: Learn about the endangered endemic kiwi bird during a tour led by knowledgeable guides. Afterwards, you will take part in an authentic Maori cultural experience that will give you insight into pre-european Maori culture and lifestyles. During the Ko Tane experience you will learn about Maori traditions and customs from the opening powhiri (greeting ceremony) to the closing waiata (songs). Afterwards, enjoy a traditional Maori hangi meal. A New Zealand perspective - Introduction to tourism in New Zealand - Placing tourism resource-use within the sustainability paradigm - Issues, conflicts and challenges to sustainable tourism in New Zealand Dr Michael Shone is an Academic Leader and Senior Lecturer in International Tourism and Hospitality Management within the Department of Hospitality and Service Industries at Ara Institute of Canterbury, and Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Tourism Management at Lincoln University (both New Zealand). His research expertise is centered principally on tourism public policy and planning, with particular reference to the use of tourism as a regional development mechanism by all levels of government. Michael has also published research on destination development issues relating to sustainable tourism, marine tourism, cruise tourism, as well as community perspectives on tourism development. 10:15 AM - 10:40 AM Depart for activity by Cityline Coach (approximately 25 mins) 10:45 AM - 2:30 PM Canterbury Service-Learning Project at Mt Cavendish - DOC (Broom control at Major Hornbrook track) 31 Nga Mahi Rd, Sockburn, Christchurch, Phone: The Department of Conservation (DOC) will be facilitating your service-learning experience. DOC is a government department responsible for the conservation of New Zealand s natural and historical heritage. Their vision is to ensure that the New Zealand people gain the benefits associated with healthy functioning ecosystems, recreation opportunities, and living their history. DOC s work is organised around five outcomes: 1. The diversity of New Zealand s natural heritage is maintained and restored. 2. New Zealand s history is protected and brought to life. 3. More people participate in recreation. 4. More people engage with conservation and value its benefits. 5. Conservation gains from more business partnerships. Please note that you will be undertaking physical activity throughout the day. Expect to be outside for the majority of your time on the project, and be prepared for all weather conditions as the weather can be very changeable. Please bring a packed lunch, water, and any additional snacks. You must have closed-toed shoes, wear clothes you will be happy to work in, and dress appropriately for the weather conditions. You also need to bring a raincoat, warm fleece, long pants, sunhat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Broom control at Major Hornbrook track, Mt Cavendish Invasive weeds are one of the biggest threats to biodiversity worldwide. In New Zealand 75% of invasive plants are garden plants that have jumped the fence. Weeds adversely affect a third of New Zealand s threatened plant species. New Zealand has 300 significant weed species at present and each year 14 new plant species become naturalised and are considered plant threats. Please note that the DOC rangers you will be working with are required to attend to all rural fires. If they receive a call it may be necessary for them to leave the project immediately to provide assistance at the site of the fire. This will result in the cessation of the project for the day, and the group will need to depart from the site to return to Christchurch at the same time as the DOC staff. 2:35 PM - 3:00 PM Depart for accommodation by Cityline Coach (approximately 25 mins) 6:00 PM Depart accommodation on foot From the YMCA, turn right and head down Hereford Street until you reach the corner of Colombo and Hereford Streets. Please also ensure you bring sun protection, good walking shoes and warm and waterproof clothing. Thursday 10 January Day 14: Sydney 7:00 AM - 7:30 AM Sydney Harbour YHA group breakfast 8:00 AM Travel: Sydney to Blue Mountains by Murrays Coach (approximately 2 hours) 10:30 AM Blue Mountains day trip Govetts Leap Road, Blackheath, Blue Mountains, Sydney, Phone: In the upper Blue Mountains lies Australia s version of the Grand Canyon. While it has little in common with its North American namesake, the Grand Canyon is a picturesque example of a sandstone canyon formed by a subterranean stream. You will be getting an introduction to the landscape and ecology of the Blue Mountains before heading up to Evan s Lookout to begin a 4-hour guided bushwalk along a historic walking track through the canyon. Please wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather conditions, good walking shoes and bring water and a packed lunch with you. A sunhat, sunglasses and sunscreen are advisable. Saturday 12 January Day 16: Sydney 7:00 AM - 7:30 AM Sydney Harbour YHA group breakfast Please ensure you have a packed lunch for today. 7:45 AM Travel: Sydney to Wattamolla Beach Car Park by Murrays Coach (approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes) 9:15 AM - 12:30 PM Wattamolla to Garie Beach coastal track Farnell Ave, Royal National Park, Phone: , The Wattamolla to Garie Beach walk is a 3.5-hour, 7.6 km coastal walk that takes you along the top of the coastal cliffs, before dropping down to Garie Beach. Established in 1879, Royal National Park is the world's second oldest national park after Yellowstone. Only 32 km from Sydney, it includes incredible natural diversity within a relatively small area, including heathland, rainforest, coastal cliffs and beaches. Please wear appropriate clothing for the weather conditions, comfortable walking shoes and sun protection (hat, sunscreen and sunglasses). You should also bring a packed lunch, drinking water, insect repellent and any personal medications. You will meet your guide from the Royal National Park Service in the lower car park at Wattamolla Beach. Please also bring your swimming gear and a towel, as there may be time for a swim after your hike.

The highway will be on your left. Turn right onto Argyle Stairs and left onto Argyle Street as you exit the stairs. Turn right at George Street. Phillip's Foote is on your right. It is a 5-minute walk. Please take your Opal Card to dinner tonight to sign it back in with your faculty.
