1 WWF-New Zealand Annual Report ANNUAL REPORT NZ 2014 Annual Report WWF-New Zealand 2014
2 WWF-New Zealand Annual Report HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR WWF believes in a future in which people live in harmony with nature. It s an ambitious vision but one we believe can, and must, be achieved for the future of our living planet. In New Zealand and globally, we are absolutely committed to keeping our oceans healthy, protecting our precious land and marine species, and supporting the efforts of thousands of community volunteers on the front line of conservation. Here are just a few of the highlights from the year ending 30 June Kiwi Coast Voting to save Maui s Our national campaign to save the last 55 Maui s dolphins helped keep the plight of our treasured but critically endangered dolphin on the agenda in a general election year. The campaign inspired people from all over the country, and the world, to take action. More than 100,000 people signed an online petition calling on political leaders to commit to better protection for Maui s, the world s smallest and rarest marine dolphin. Kiwi Coast Reconnecting Northland helps inspire the next generation of conservationists with meet a kiwi events allowing local families to get up close and personal with this national icon. These events showcased the work of the Kiwi Coast project, which is connecting community groups and other organisations within eastern Northland to help boost kiwi populations through coordinated predator control efforts. It s an important first step in Reconnecting Northland s mission to inspire Northlanders to be active in the kaitiakitanga of their environment. Community conservation on the map For 14 years, WWF has worked in partnership with The Tindall Foundation to deliver much-needed funding to community conservation and education initiatives. This year, we supported another 44 groups, including the Bushy Park Sanctuary Trust to help translocate 20 hihi/stitchbirds. Want to know what s going on in your area? Check out our new interactive map showing the groups dedicated to protecting endangered species and amazing landscapes that have been supported by WWF. communityprojectsmap.wwf.org.nz Virunga success We celebrated a decisive victory, thanks to hundreds of thousands of our supporters, when UK oil company Soco International agreed to cease plans to prospect for oil in Africa s Virunga National Park. Home to many endangered species, including mountain gorillas, the park is now safe for the immediate future from risky oil extraction.
3 Brit Finucci SHARK FINNING We did it! The Government agreed to ban shark finning in New Zealand waters, after pressure from WWF, our supporters, and others. The ban came fully into effect in October 2014, making it illegal to cut the fins off a dead shark and dump the body at sea. The measures bring New Zealand practices into line with many other countries, who have acted to stop the wasteful and unsustainable practice of killing sharks only for their fins.
