10 The Venture What is a Venture Where is the Venture Callum- 10

11 The Venture It is the major Australian Na(onal youth event for the Venturer sec(on (14-17 years old) Venturers and Guides from all over Australia and other Asian Pacific countries awend For 12 days you will enjoy ac(vi(es, expedi(ons and challenges you may have never dreamed of doing and will make new friends for life! 12 Where is the Venture The Venture is being held at Woodhouse Scout Park, Piccadilly about 20 minutes from Adelaide It s a purpose built Scout Camp and has been used for Jamborees in the past. Callum- 12

13 The Serious Bit Phil- 13

14 Supervision The Venturer Sec(on of Scouts Australia relies on Venturers taking responsibility for their own ac(ons. During the Venture, Venturers will be allocated into a Unit of around 18 youth and 2 leaders. During the Pre Tour, Venturers will be working in Units of around 20 youth and 2 or 3 leaders. Venturers will NOT be accompanied and directly supervised at all (mes. There will be free (me to explore loca(ons without leader supervision. Phil- 14

15 Supervision Adult leaders will be available at all ac(vi(es, expedi(ons and on site. Venturers will be required to no(fy ac(vity leaders of their plans and movements during all ac(vi(es and during the Pre Tour. Phil- 15

16 Behaviour Youth bound by the Scout Law Leaders bound by the Scout Law and the Code of Conduct Breaking of either will result in appropriate ac(on by the Con(ngent Team. If either is broken and the need to send a member home occurs: Individual will have to pay the airfares and associated costs Parents will be contacted A full report to Parents and the Scout Associa(on will be issued. 20 Curfew The Venture will have a curfew which will vary each night depending on the ac(vi(es offered They will be patrolling this The Pre Tour will have a curfew in line with the ac(vi(es being offered Its not like AG or VG where you are only there for a weekend, you can t go without sleep for 21 days! 21 Smoking There is a high risk of fire at Wood House Our preference is for no one to smoke If you have to smoke, then it needs to be in designated smoking areas. Phil- 21

25 What happens at a Venture? The Venture is broken into 3 key parts: The Pre Tour (Op(onal 7 Days) The Venture Expedi(ons (6 Days) The Venture On Site (6 Days) Phil - 25

27 Pre Tour Accommoda(on At Alice Springs we will be staying in a school hall. At Uluru we are staying at the Outback Pioneer Resort in bunk style accommoda(on. At Coober Pedy we are staying in underground bunk style accommoda(on. At Gladstone we are staying in a school hall. All accommoda(on is air- condi(oned Phil - 27

32 The Venture Venturers will stay in their own tents Each expedi(on unit (different to your home unit) will have an assigned camping area Venturers need to have their own light weight/hike tent. 1 Tent = 1 Venturer!! John- 32

33 Meals During the Venture, all meals will be fully catered for by commercial chefs YOU DON T NEED TO COOK! just wash your own dishes During expedi(ons some will have cooks, others you may need to assist in cooking meals You need to pack a Dilly Bag for use during the Venture (don t forget a tea towel) John- 33

34 Health & Welfare The main Venture site is located 20 minutes from a major hospital At the Venture site there will be a 24x7 medical post staffed with nurses and a doctor There are also onsite first aid and welfare personal There is nearby access to all medical services including a Pharmacy. 35 Health & Welfare Where to go if you have a problem: During the Pre Tour Speak with any leader or the Welfare Leaders During the Venture Speak with your unit leader, if you are unhappy with the result speak to the Con(ngent Team We need to know if you have an issue Mum & Dad can t solve your problems from Victoria! 36 Health & Welfare If you have specific health or dietary needs this should be on your online registra(on if not speak to us ASAP! 37 Hydra(on During the pre tour and Venture the weather is going to be in the high 30 to mid 40 degrees. You need to be drinking in excess of 4 litre of water per day this is the minimum. The Pre Tour group will have 2 litre hydra(on packs provided. Sharon- 37

38 Travel Sickness If you get travel sick please bring some medica(on with you. If you are doing the Pre Tour there will be some VERY long bus trips (one day is 11 hours) Even during the Venture some expedi(ons have a 5 hour bus trip. Sharon- 38

39 Venture The First Day You will arrive at a Stadium in Adelaide All Venturers and Unit Leaders will form into their Venture Units Opening Ceremony, and then out onto expedi(ons Gary- 39

40 Expedi(ons You ll spend 4 nights and 5 days in your expedi(on unit doing ac(vi(es away from the Venture site Expedi(ons will be spread out all over South Australia and one is even in Victoria! All expedi(ons will have contact with the Venture team, but other contact methods like mobiles may be limited depending on the site. There will be a facility to leave excess gear on site during the Expedi(on phase. We will supply garbage bags and tags for this purpose. You should have heard from your Unit Leader or Expedi(on Leader by now, this may have been via Facebook or . Gary- 40

41 Expedi(ons & Award Scheme Some expedi(ons may be able to count towards your award scheme Check for details on which expedi(ons may count towards award scheme. If you wish to use an expedi(on towards your award scheme you need to apply through you unit council, and if it is at Queens Scout level your District/Zone Venturer Council Your expedi(on leader will typically be your examiner Gary- 41

42 The last five days There will be a range of on and off site ac(vi(es Off Site ac(vi(es should have already been pre- booked online you will be able to change these at the Venture You choose what you want to do, and when you want to do it. If you want to just hang and do nothing, you can, but who wants to do that with all the ac(vi(es on offer! Some Off Site Ac(vi(es have an addi(onal fee, this needs to be paid at the Venture. They will have EFTPOS facili(es. Gary- 42

52 Visi(ng your Venturer You need to arrange with Gary if you wish to visit your Venturer during the Pre Tour or Venture If you or a rela(ve wish to take your Venturer off site during the Venture you need to provide wriwen no(ce to Gary Steinhardt. No Venturer may be removed from the site by any person without the express permission of the Con(ngent Leader Gary - 52

55 GeEng to South Australia The Con(ngent will be travelling to the Venture on two dates across 9 different flights: Pre Tour Group (173 members) on 26 th December by Qantas to Alice Springs. 3 Separate Groups, 1 direct, 1 via Sydney and 1 via Adelaide Non Pre Tour Group 1 (271 members) on 2 nd January by Qantas & Virgin to Adelaide 6 different flights Phil - 55

56 GeEng there Pre Tour Very early start 5:30am for some, 6:30am and 8am for others. You need to make your own way to Melbourne (Tullamarine) Airport. Check your personal i(nerary in your bags for details if you have ques(ons please ask today Phil - 56

57 GeEng there Non Pre Tour Earliest group needs to be at Melbourne (Tullamarine) airport at 5:30am. 6 Different Flights across Qantas and Virgin Check your travel sheets for your specific flight details. Phil - 57

58 Travel Groups Everyone has a travel group. This is your group just for traveling through the airport and on the flight. When arriving at the airport, look for a leader holding up a sign with your travel group number. Check in with that leader and then STAY WITH THEM don t wonder off or muck around. Phil - 58

59 Miss your flight? If you miss your boat or flight it will be up to you to pay for another (cket to get to Adelaide or Alice Springs Our (ckets are not flexible and can t be changed if you miss them! If you do miss your boat/flight you should contact Gary or Phil immediately! Gary - 59

60 What if l am sick on leaving day? If you are sick on or just before we are due to leave you should contact Gary We may be able to arrange another method of transport (at your cost) to awend the Venture and catch you up with the rest of the group Gary - 60

61 What to do on leaving day Arrive at your designated loca(on ON TIME not when your flight is due to depart!!! Check in with the leader at that loca(on Follow the leader s instruc(ons Gary - 61

62 Weight Limits Virgin Qantas & Virgin 23 Kg of checked baggage 7 Kg of hand luggage Be smart - wear heavier items like hike boots and jackets, and make full use of your hand luggage limit John- 62

63 Some things are not meant to travel! No knives No fuel for stoves, and make sure if you have to bring a fuel stove that it s completely empty of fuel No fireworks No Whips No Fire Twirling equipment John- 63

64 Travel Tips Personalise your bag there will be 450 others just the same. Put a ribbon, etc. on it Make sure you have your con(ngent luggage tags on your bags Make full use of your hand luggage weight, if you take your tent as hand luggage, remove the poles and pegs otherwise you won t get through security John- 64

65 Travel Tips Don t strap things to your bag! If your tent is separate make sure it has a name tag on it The only thing that should be separate (at worst) is your tent Don t forget you can have a day pack as hand luggage It will fit, if not you have too much stuff! John - 65

66 Washing There will be an opportunity to wash clothing during the pre tour on the 1 st Janurary rest day During the Venture there will be washing facili(es available on site during the on site phase John - 66

68 Travelling Home The Con(ngent will be travelling home across 9 different flights. First flight arrives in Melbourne at 2:50pm and the last arrives at 9:35pm on 13/1/2012 Check your personal i(nerary sheet for arrival informa(on Parents - you must collect your Venturer from Melbourne Airport at the designated arrival (me. Venturers Don t forget to collect all your belongings! Phil - 68

69 Independent Travel If you are arriving at the Venture by Independent Travel, you must meet at Adelaide Arena at 12noon on 2/1/2015 and check in with Phil BriW If you are leaving the site by Independent Travel, you must be picked up at Woodhouse by 10am on 13/1/2015. If your personal i(nerary does not say Independent Travel, you need to speak with Phil immediately We require a lewer with detailed informa(on of who is picking up your Venturer Phil - 69

70 What to bring A suggested gear list is contained within your informa(on packs There will be opportuni(es to wash your clothes on the Pre Tour and Venture South Australia weather can be variable and very hot, you should pack both summer and some warm clothes Phil - 70

71 Insurance Individual Venturers will be covered for accident insurance only to the extent provided for by the Victorian Branch s standard insurance policy. We have not taken out travel insurance for members No insurance is provided for any personal possessions or equipment.
