It may be disappointing for Nats fans, but we have plenty of HFR car club events coming up. September 1 st is the Taste of the Mountains Festival in Madison, VA. Our club has been providing a car display there regularly for over 20 years now. We did miss it last year. It was cancelled due to a hurricane. Please don t miss it this time. My 63 Dodge has reached a point in its restoration where I can take it out for a road trip. I plan to take it to Madison. The day after that, Sept 2 nd, Mark Irving is having everyone down to his place for his annual garage party/picnic. You won t want to miss this one either. Mark says there will be plenty of good food, and if you leave hungry it won t be his fault. Also in September we can attend the Tidewater region meet on the 22 nd. (I noticed The Magneto has the date wrong on this one.) I am signed up for that. I will be taking my truck there. I hope some others will be going as well. We have been asked to provide short rides in our antique automobiles for a group of seniors with early stages of ALZ. This sounds like a good idea to me. I will do this and I hope we can get a group of 5 or 6 of us who aren t going to Hershey that weekend to go along. I think it would be fun and I bet those folks would really appreciate it. For everyone going to Hershey, please have a great time and tell us all about it when you get back. On October 27 th we will be headed to Shannon Airport for the harvest festival there. The date for the display at eagle village has yet to be determined. I vote for either October 20 th or November 10 th. My weekend calendar is going to be pretty full in October and November. We will soon be electing a new group of leaders to serve on the club s executive board for the next two years. All seven of the current board members are hereby instructed to attend the September meeting and provide the name of another club member who has agreed to serve on the nominating committee. The nominating committee will be formed in September and tasked with returning in October with a list of candidates for each board position. We will hold elections at the November meeting and install the new executive board at the Christmas luncheon. All is well. See you at the meeting. Doug

3 Page 3 Historic Fredericksburg Region, AACA - Monthly Meeting July 17, 2018 President Doug Makin called the meeting to order at 7:34 PM. There were 20 members present and 2 guest: Janet Bykowski and Joe Cornett. July 2018 Minutes The June minutes were read since there was no Magneto newsletter tonight and they were approved as written. Liz Hunt will record minutes this month as Nora is out of town. The refreshments signup has an open spot for November drinks if you are interested. Treasurer s Report Some bills were discussed to include the radio show. There were no additional bills to approve. The scholarship was paid out. The barrier deposit from the city is still pending. There is no 50/50 this month. COMMITTEE REPORT Sunshine Club Lish Garnet has been in the hospital but doing better. Fred and Lorraine Becker both had some orthopedic surgery and recovering at this time. Lauman has been discharged from the hospital, present tonight and also doing much better. Cards will be sent. Legislative Don Mohr was not present to report. Magneto newsletter Fred Becker was not present to provide newsletter. Web site Nora was not present to report. Membership and Activities Our two new visitors, Janet and Joe were approved membership. They submitted their HFR Membership Application tonight. All are reminded that new military members get their first 6 months free, both the National and club memberships. Wally reported on the most recent events: 6/23/18 Richmond show There were 100+ cars plus some modified cars; There is a new class called cruising in class and no pre-registration required; Mark Irvin received Best Representation of Restored Muscle Car ; Ben Schooler received 2 nd place for his Ford Ranchero; Wally received Best Ford for his Model T; 7/4/18 Heritage Car Show - Doug Makin reported there were 5 club members who attended this event and they had a good time. 7/15/18 Flying Circus Air/Car Show Wally and Liz Hunt, Ben and Suzanne Schooler, Frank and Mrs Duval. Brian and Chris Danzig, Paul Myers This is also an annual event. 7/14/18 Gettysburg Car Show Wally reported on this National Event and on those that received awards: John Garnet Senior,1957 Thunderbird; Paul Myers 1 st DPC for 76 Olds;

4 Page 4 Ben Schooler HPOF for 57 Ford; Robert/Nora Aftel judged; and Wally/Liz Hunt received a preservatation award for 1924 Model T Ford. 9/1/18 Taste of the Mountains The plan is to meet at Tractor Supply that morning at 7am as very important we all arrive on time and before roads are blocked. Discussed how this annual event is a favorite because the town has many vendors, food trucks and music, etc during that day. 10/10/18-10/13/18 Hersey Meet Wally discussed all the activities of this Annual National event and encourage all to attend especially if you have never done so in the past. The Historic Virginia Peninsula Region will be hosting the 2018 ODMA. HFRAACA Annual Meet - J Brown reported that most of the bills have been submitted except the one from the city for the barriers. He said overall it was a very good show despite the rain possibility reducing the attendance and our club had good recognition. He did order an ad for $20 about next year s car show in the HFFI booklet which will go into next year s budget. OLD BUSINESS We are still looking for presentations for club meetings. Historical Marker Doug Makin has several from Emily Schrecker which contains her research and some contacts. Doug will share information with Ken Loucke who has agreed to continue this research. He reported the DMV will research for a fee. Ken will continue to work on this project. ODMA - The Historic Virginia Peninsula Region will be hosting the 2018 ODMA. However there was still some discussion whether we could host a meet of this size and where it would be held. J. Brown mentioned if there was enough space at the Park and Shop Hyatt where parking will hold only 69 cars. Wally suggested Mary Washington Hospital or possibly The EXPO. It was noted that the EXPO is hosting the National Mustang Show in September. Wally will plan a committee to discuss these possibilities if our club should decide to host a National Meet and will report back to next month. NEW BUSINESS 2018 Elections - Each board member is reminded to seek out someone in the club to participate on the nominating committee. This new nominating committee will meet in September. Elections held in November. 7/11/18 Paul Myers reported there will be a Antique Car Procession at Covenant Funeral Home in Stafford for Rusty Fenner s Funeral. He was an active member of the local Stangs and Fangs Mustang club and they are asking people to bring cars. 10/13/18 Ron Reese reported on a new event called 4 th Annual Bumpass Community day which will benefit the Bumpass Volunteer Fire Department. They are requesting antique cars this year. There will be many activities such as Blue Grass, pumpkin patch, pulling mules, carriage rides, bounce house

5 Page 5 Fire trucks, raffles and free food. Please contact Ron for more details. Ben closed the meeting with a prayer. The club meeting was adjourned at 8:40 PM.

6 A U G U S T Page 6 Studebaker National Museum Long before Henry Ford mechanized the assembly of transportation, the industrious Studebaker family was building thousands of carriages, wagons, buggies, dump trucks, sleighs, and bobsleds. They grew their wagon-oriented enterprise in South Bend, IN, from 1852 through the end of the 19 th century, ultimately becoming the largest wagon producer in the world. In the late 1880s and through the 1890s, they produced tens of thousands of vehicles per year, with a workforce numbering in the thousands. They began shifting to electric and then gasoline-powered cars and trucks in 1900, and by 1913 were second only to Ford in automobile production. They continued automobile production in South Bend until December 20, 1963 and then had remaining parts assembled into cars at their Hamilton, Ontario plant until At the Studebaker National Museum in South Bend, one can see examples of the Studebaker brothers early transportation, their transition to electric cars, as well as their transition to gasolinepowered vehicles. The museum, located at 201 South Chapin Street, welcomes visitors at the front entrance with large manicured shrubbery spelling out the name Studebaker. Inside, the building has three floors. The first floor has the Studebaker early history with the actual wagons, carriages, plows, wheel barrows, electric cars, Presidential vehicles, and first-run gasoline cars. There also is a nice gift shop on the first floor. The second floor has a mock drive-in restaurant with sterling Studebaker cars at each drive-up window speaker, as well as a wide variety of Studebaker 4-, 6-, and 8-cylinder cars positioned throughout the floor. The basement has rows of Studebakers on the floor along with a second row above these, on car lifts stacks of pristine Studebakers. Highlights of the museum are Presidential vehicles including the one Abraham Lincoln travelled in the night he was assassinated as well as the Studebaker Forward-Backward vehicle that was designed and used for tunnels between the U.S. Senate Building and the U.S. Capitol where there was no way to turn around. The museum also showcases one or more of the Studebaker Ace, Astral, Avanti, Big Six, Champ, Champion, Champion Station Wagon, Commander, Cruiser, Daytona, Flanders, Golden Hawk, Hawk, Lark, Light Six, President, Sceptre, Scotsman, Sky, and Stevens cars.

10 Page 10 Taste of the Mountains Main Street Festival September 1, :00am - 4:00 pm. Madison, Virginia This is a club outing, we having doing this for the past 20 years. It is a good time as we get our cars out and can walk around the festival an enjoy for good food and look at all of the atrs and crafts. We will meet at the Tractor Supply on Route 3 at 7:00am and leave shortly after in a caravan as we need to be in place by 8:30am when they close the streets. Hope to see everyone even if you do not have an antique car.
