1 Single Engine Service Bulletin February 27, 2006 TITLE HONEYWELL KT 73 MODE S TRANSPONDER INSTALLATION EFFECTIVITY Applicable to the following airplanes equipped with a Cessna Factory Installed Honeywell KT 76C Transponder. Model Serial Numbers 172R thru S 172S8001 thru 172S S thru T thru , , , , , , , , and T182T T thru T , T and T H thru , , , and T206H T thru T NOTE: Airplanes equipped with the Garmin G1000 Nav III Avionics package are not affected. REASON To provide for the installation of a Honeywell KT 73. DESCRIPTION The existing panel mounted Honeywell KT 76C Transponder may be replaced with the panel mounted Honeywell KT 73. The KT 73 is designed to meet TSO C112 & JTSO 2C112a for a Class 2A ATCRBS/Mode Select Airborne Transponder System. It fulfills the role of the airborne beacon equipment according to the requirements of the Air Traffic Radar Beacon system (ATCRBS). COMPLIANCE Optional: may be accomplished if desired. NEW P/N QUANTITY DESCRIPTION OLD P/N DISPOSITION 1 POH Supplement Insert in POH. Refer to Material Price And Availability section for part number. The following tool, or equivalent, is necessary. NAME NUMBER MANUFACTURER USE Transponder Test Set ATC-601 or Equivalent IFR Systems Incorporated West York Street PO Box 1521 Wichita, KS To test Mode S transponders. Instructions 1. Contact the FAA, or the equivalent agency in countries other than the U.S., and request an eight digit Mode-S address code in octal format. 2. Prepare the airplane for maintenance. A. Make sure that all switches are in the OFF/NORM position. B. Disconnect electrical power from the airplane. (1) Disconnect the airplane battery. (2) Disconnect external electrical power. C. Attach maintenance warning tags to the battery and external power receptacle that have "DO NOT CONNECT ELECTRICAL POWER - MAINTENANCE IN PROGRESS" writtenonthem. 3. Remove the KT 76C transponder. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 34, KT 76C Transponder - Maintenance Practices.) Page 4 February 27, 2006
5 4. Install one KT 73. (Refer to the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 34, KT 76C Transponder - Maintenance Practices.) NOTE: Installation procedures for the KT 73 transponder are the same as for the KT 76C transponder. 5. Remove maintenance warning tags and connect the airplane battery. 6. Make sure that the KT 73 transponder mode select switch is in the OFF position. 7. Put the BATT MASTER switch in the ON position. 8. Put the AVIONICS MASTER switch in the ON position. 9. Configure the KT 73 Transponder. A. Put the KT-73 in the Standby mode and select "0000" IDENT code. Simultaneously push the IDT and VFR buttons for a minimum of two seconds. B. Use the CRSR knob to select between headings and press the IDT key to select/enter the displayed option. C. Use the four selector knobs located under the display to set the Airplane Address (eight digit Mode-S address code from Step 1). D. Configure the pages as shown below: A/C ADDR - Page 1 NOTE: "XXXX" denotes the first four octal digits of the Airplane Address. AA1 XXXX A/C ADDR - Page 2 NOTE: "YYYY" denotes the last four octal digits of the Airplane Address. AA2 YYYY MAX AIR XXX YYY NOTE: When the unit is in the Max Air program menu, configure according to the table below. GND VOL GND 40 NOTE: Pushing the VFR key will cause the audio message TEST OK to be issued at the selected audio level when the unit is wired for unmuted audio. ADSB EMT OTHER CAT A1 CODE > 000 NOTE: No user input accepted. For factory use only. E. Put the KT 73 transponder mode select switch in the OFF position. This will save the settings. F. Put the KT 73 transponder mode select switch in the ON position. 10. Flight ID Configuration Instructions. A. Put the KT 73 in flight ID mode with the selector knob. B. Rotate the CRSR knob to position the cursor under the flight ID character to be changed. C. Rotate the FLT ID knob to select the desired character. NOTE: If no flight ID is available, then use the airplane tail number. D. Allow the CRSR and FLT ID number knobs to idle for five seconds or turn the selector knob to the SBY position to save the flight id number. 11. Do a test of the KT 73 transponder. A. Do a self test of the KT 73 transponder. (1) Put the KT 73 transponder mode select switch in the TST (Test Mode) position. Make sure transponder display illuminates all display segments for a minimum of four seconds and TEST OK is displayed. B. Do a lighting check. (1) Adjust the KT 73 transponder bezel lighting by turning the airplane's Radio LT dimming control clockwise (bright) or counterclockwise (dim). (2) Adjust the display brightness to the desired level by rotating the transponder's BRT (Brightness Control) knob clockwise or counterclockwise. NOTE: Eight (carets) below the alphanumeric display characters indicate the brightness setting relative to the photocell reading. Page 6 February 27, 2006
7 C. Program the VFR code. (1) Put the KT 73 transponder mode select switch in the SBY (Standby Mode). Make sure SBY is displayed. (2) Turn the Transponder Code Selector knobs to set the default VFR code (typically 1200). (3) Push the IDT and VFR buttons at the same time. This will set the preprogrammed VFR Transponder Code. D. Do an altitude check. (1) Put the KT 73 transponder mode select switch in the ALT (Altitude Mode). (2) Make sure FL YYY is displayed. YYY denotes the airplanes altitude in hundreds of feet. (3) Makesurethatthe Flight Level displayed on the KT 73 transponder matches the airplane Altimeter barometric pressure when set at inches of mercury. 12. Make sure that the KT 73 transponder operates correctly with a Mode S Ramp Tester. Table 1. Checks sidelobe suppression function by varying the SLS pulse level and monitoring transponder reply. Verifies transponder replies to Mode A and C interrogations. Measures F1 to F2 spacing and duration of pulses. replies, with the proper address, toamodesall-callinterrogation. does not reply to Mode S interrogations that contain invalid addresses. Verifies Ident function is operating. replies to a Mode S UF 0 interrogation with the correct altitude, address, and format. replies to Mode S UF 4 interrogation with the correct altitude, address, and format. -74 dbm ±3.0 dbm Replies to interrogations. Place the appropriate airplane KT 73 Handbook Supplement in the airplane Handbook. 17. Make an entry in the airplane logbook that states compliance with this Service Bulletin. Dear Cessna Owner: This Owner Advisory is to inform you that has been issued to provide for the installation of a Honeywell KT 73 if your airplane is currently equipped with a Cessna factory installed Honeywell KT 76C Transponder. The existing panel mounted Honeywell KT 76C Transponder may be replaced with the panel mounted Honeywell KT 73.
