All pilots/operators are reminded that the airborne equipment that displays other ADS-B equipped aircraft and transponder equipped aircraft via TIS-B is only for pilot situational awareness. This equipment is not approved as a collision avoidance tool and does not relieve the pilot of responsibility to see-and-avoid other aircraft. Any deviation from an air traffic control clearance based on cockpit information must be approved by the controlling ATC facility prior to commencing the maneuver. Uncoordinated deviations may place an aircraft in close proximity to other aircraft under ATC control not seen on the airborne equipment and may possibly result in the issuance of a pilot deviation. The ADS-B is currently being deployed throughout the National Airspace System (NAS). The availability of ground based transceivers (GBT) is limited to selected areas. iii

11 Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 INTRODUCTION CHAPTER 1 DESCRIPTION Description The Lynx MultiLink Surveillance System (MSS) uses a 978 MHz Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) and an internal GPS receiver to provide Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B In/ Out) for use in aircraft situational awareness. The installed ADS-B OUT system has been shown to meet the equipment requirements of 14 CFR SYSTEM DESCRIPTION The Lynx MSS requires an L-band antenna to receive and transmit information on 978MHz, a GPS antenna to receive position, velocity, time and integrity (NIC, NAC etc) information, an input for pressure altitude for the ADS-B functions, and an interface for control operation. NGT-2000 The NGT-2000 is a remote mount device capable of transmitting ADS-B Out and receiving ADS-B In. The ADS-B out provides surveillance information to ground systems for air traffic control, and to other like-equipped aircraft with ADS-B In. The ADS-B In receives surveillance information of other like-equipped aircraft and has access to the following ADS-B services broadcast from an ADS-B equipped ground station: Traffic Information Service Broadcast (TIS-B), Flight Information Service - Broadcast (FIS-B), and Automatic Dependant Surveillance Rebroadcast (ADS-R). The NGT-2000 is capable of interfacing with compatible control panels, personal electronic devices (e.g. ipad), and has discrete inputs and outputs used to provide operational status to the pilot. NGT-2500 The NGT-2500 has the same hardware and firmware/software as the NGT-2000, and is also capable of interfacing with various cockpit displays for displaying ADS-B traffic and weather. 1-1

12 Description FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 The MultiLink Surveillance System (MSS) contains a Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) and GPS receiver that provides required aircraft position. The NGT-2000/-2500 products are capable of ADS-B Out and ADS-B In functionality. A description of these functions are provided below. A graphic overview of UAT traffic (UAT, ADS-R, and TIS-B) is provided in Figure 1-1. Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast ADS-B uses transmissions from ADS-B equipped aircraft to provide surveillance information to ground systems for air traffic control, and to other like-equipped aircraft with ADS-B In. The ADS-B Out broadcasts the following aircraft information in one second intervals: aircraft identification, position, altitude, velocity, track, and other aircraft status information. The ADS-B In receives ADS-B Out from like equipped aircraft and has access to the following services broadcast from an ADS-B equipped ground station: Traffic Information Service -Broadcast (TIS-B), Automatic Dependent Surveillance Re-broadcast (ADS-R), and Flight Information Service - Broadcast (FIS-B). The traffic display shows the relative position of ADS-B or standard traffic using text, shapes, and colors. ADS-B also provides similar information on ADS-B equipped ground vehicles. The effective surveillance range is 60 nmi and is capable of maintaining report messages for a minimum of 120 UAT ADS-B participants simultaneously. To reduce display clutter a set number of other aircraft of the highest priority other aircraft are displayed at a time. The Flight Information Service Broadcast (FIS-B) provides graphical and textual display of weather and aeronautical information. ADS-B is NOT intended to be used as a collision avoidance system and does NOT relieve the pilot of responsibility to seeand-avoid other aircraft. No avoidance maneuvers are provided for, nor authorized, as a direct result of a ADS-B other aircraft being displayed in the cockpit. Avoidance maneuvers must be based on visually acquiring the target 1-2

13 Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Description Automatic Dependent Surveillance Re-broadcast ADS-R is a ground based broadcast service that provides UAT equipped aircraft with ADS-B messages from aircraft equipped with 1090ES ADS-B. The actual availability of services depends upon both the availability of a ground station to support ADS-R source data and aircraft being within range of the ground station. ADS-R transmissions are updated at least every 2 seconds on the surface, 5 seconds in the terminal area, and 10 seconds in the en-route airspace. ADS-R traffic aircraft are provided by the ground station if within a 15 nm horizontal range and +/-5,000 ft of altitude of the receiving aircraft. ADS-B equipped ground aircraft and vehicles are not displayed to airborne aircraft. An aircraft on the ground receiving ADS-R is provided both ground aircraft and vehicles as well as airborne other aircraft within 5nm and 2,000 ft above ground level of the airport reference point. ADS-R is NOT intended to be used as a collision avoidance system and does NOT relieve the pilot of responsibility to seeand-avoid other aircraft. No avoidance maneuvers are provided for, nor authorized, as a direct result of a ADS-R other aircraft being displayed in the cockpit. 14 Description Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Traffic Information Service - Broadcast TIS-B is the broadcast from Ground Radio Stations of ATC-derived traffic information to ADS-B equipped aircraft. To reduce display clutter, the TIS-B service only provides traffic information on aircraft that are below 18,000 ft. TIS-B traffic aircraft are provided by the ground station if within a 15nm horizontal range and +/-3,500 ft of altitude of the receiving aircraft. ADS-B equipped ground aircraft and vehicles are not displayed to airborne aircraft. Aircraft not equipped with a transponder, or equipped with a Mode A only transponder are not part of the TIS-B data and will not be seen on the traffic display. An aircraft on the ground receiving TIS-B is provided both ground aircraft and vehicles as well as airborne other aircraft within 5nm and 2,000 ft above ground level of the airport reference point. The TIS-B service is intended to improve the pilot s ability to visually see traffic in the air and on the airport surface so that pilots can more effectively apply traditional see-and-avoid techniques. TIS-B is NOT intended to be used as a collision avoidance system and does NOT relieve the pilot of responsibility to seeand-avoid other aircraft. No avoidance maneuvers are provided for, nor authorized, as a direct result of a TIS-B other aircraft being displayed in the cockpit. Avoidance maneuvers must be based on visually acquiring the target. In order to receive TIS-B services, the following conditions must exist: 1. Aircraft must be equipped with transmitting ADS-B Out. 2. Aircraft must be within coverage volume of a compatible Ground Radio Station that is configured for TIS-B uplinks. 3. Aircraft must be within coverage of and detected by at least one ATC Radar Site serving the Ground Radio Station in use. 1-4

16 Description Flight Information Service - Broadcast Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 FIS B is a ground broadcast service provided through the ADS B Services network over the 978 MHz UAT data link. The FAA FIS B system provides pilots and flight crews of properly equipped aircraft with a cockpit display of certain aviation weather and aeronautical information. FIS B service availability is expected across the NAS in 2013 and is currently available within certain regions. FIS-B information is to be used for pilot planning decisions and pilot near-term decisions focused on avoiding areas of inclement weather that are beyond visual range or where poor visibility precludes visual acquisition of inclement weather. FIS-B information, including weather information, NOTAMs, and TFR areas, are intended for the sole purpose of assisting in long- and near-term planning decision making. The system lacks sufficient resolution and updating capability necessary for aerial maneuvering associated with immediate decisions. The weather products provided by FIS B are for information only. Therefore, these products do not meet the safety and regulatory requirements of official weather products. The weather products displayed on FIS B should not be used as primary weather products, i.e., aviation weather to meet operational and safety requirements. Official weather products (primary products) can be obtained from a variety of sources including ATC, FSSs, and, if applicable, AOCC VHF/HF voice, which can transmit aviation weather, NOTAMS, and other operational aeronautical information to aircraft in flight. FIS B augments the traditional ATC/FSS/ AOCC services by providing additional information and, for some products, offers the advantage of being displayed graphically. By using FIS B for orientation and information, the usefulness of information received from official sources may be enhanced, but the user should be alert and understand any limitations associated with individual products. FIS B provides the initial basic products listed in Table 1-1 at no charge to the user. Additional products are envisioned, but may incur subscription charges to the user. FIS B reception is line of sight within the service volume of the ground infrastructure. 1-6

17 Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Description Table 1-1: Description of FIS-B Available Information PRODUCT AIRMET METAR NEXRAD, Regional NEXRAD, CONUS NOTAM SIGMET DESCRIPTION Airmen s Meteorological Information is a weather advisory issued by a meteorological watch office a potentially hazardous condition exists for low-level aircraft and/or aircraft with limited capability. Compared to SIGMETs, AIRMETs cover less severe weather: moderate turbulence and icing, surface winds of 30 knots, or widespread restricted visibility. Aviation routine weather report is a format for reporting weather information. METARs are predominantly used by pilots in fulfillment of a pre-flight weather briefing. METARs typically come from airports or permanent weather observation stations. Next-Generation Radar is a nationwide network of high resolution Doppler weather radars, which detect precipitation and atmospheric movement or wind. It returns data which when processed can be displayed in a mosaic map which shows patterns of precipitation and its movement. The Regional NEXRAD FIS-B product is a composite of available NEXRAD radar imagery in a local area, showing a more detailed image than the CONUS NEXRAD product. NEXRAD regional information provides coverage for approximately a 75 nm radius around the participating aircraft. The CONUS NEXRAD FIS-B product is a summary composite of available NEXRAD radar imagery across the contiguous 48 states. Notice To Airmen is created and transmitted by government agencies under guidelines specified by Annex 15: Aeronautical Information Services of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. A NOTAM is filed with an aviation authority to alert aircraft pilots of any hazards En Route or at a specific location. The FIS-B NOTAM product consists of NOTAM-Ds and NOTAM-FDCs (including TFRs). Significant Meteorological Information is a concise description of the occurrence or expected occurrence of specified En Route weather phenomena which may affect the safety of aircraft operations. SIGMETs are intended for dissemination to all pilots in flight to enhance safety. 1-7

18 Description Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Table 1-1: Description of FIS-B Available Information (continued) PRODUCT SIGMET, Convective TAF Winds and Temperatures Aloft DESCRIPTION A Convective SIGMET will be issued when the following conditions are occurring or, in the judgment of the forecaster, are expected to occur: a. A line of thunderstorms at least 60 miles long with thunderstorms affecting at least 40 percent of its length. b. An area of active thunderstorms affecting at least 3,000 square miles covering at least 40 percent of the area concerned and exhibiting a very strong radar reflectivity intensity or a significant satellite or lightning signature. c. Embedded or severe thunderstorm (s) expected to occur for more than 30 minutes during the valid period regardless of the size of the area. Terminal Aerodrome Forecast is a format for reporting aviation weather forecast information. Generally a TAF is a 9- or 12-hour forecast, though some TAFs can cover an 18- or 24-hour period. TAFs complement and use similar encoding to METAR reports. They are produced by a human forecaster based on the ground. For this reason there are fewer TAF locations than there are METARs. TAFs can be more accurate than Numerical Weather Forecasts, since they take into account local, smallscale, geographic effects. Winds and Temperature Aloft Forecast is forecast for specific atmospheric conditions in terms of wind and temperature in a specific altitude measured mostly in feet (ft) above mean sea level (MSL). The forecast is specifically used for aviation purposes. 1-8

19 Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Operation INTRODUCTION CHAPTER 2 OPERATION Operational control of the NGT-2000/-2500 is accomplished with either a CP-2500 Control Panel, a Compatible Transponder used as the Control Panel, or using the Push-To-Sync Mode A control feature. Both models have the capability of interfacing with a PED device. The NGT-2500 also has the capability of interfacing with compatible traffic and weather displays. In addition, cockpit switches and indicator lamps may be available to control or provide alerts. Details on each of these methods of control are detailed below. CP-2500 CONTROL PANEL The CP-2500 is specifically designed for operation with the NGT- 2000/ The operational information provided in this section is limited. Refer to the CP-2500 ( ) for details. Power On NGT-2000/ There is no power on/off switch for the NGT-2000/ Depending on the aircraft, use either the battery switches or avionics master switch to apply power. 2. Normal operation begins within 10 seconds of applying power. During start up the unit checks for valid configuration data and initializes self tests. 3. The GPS Begins initializing. The CP-2500 shows GPS INIT for approximately 90 seconds, while the GPS is initializing. If a ADS-B System Fail is displayed after 2 minutes, then the GPS position was not acquired. If the ADS-B System Fail is displayed in less than 2 minutes then a different problem has been detected. Cycle power to the NGT-2000/-2500 to restart GPS initialization. 4. If using the WiFi function, activate the PED and flight application. Based on available ADS-B service, weather data and traffic may not be seen. Note - NEXRAD updates are only transmitted every 5 minutes, and CONUS information every 15 minutes. 2-1

20 Operation Lynx NGT-2000/ If a NGT-2500 system is installed and the optional traffic and weather displays are ON (and functioning), check display status. Based on available ADS-B service, weather data and traffic may not be seen. Note - Some traffic displays may show DATA-FAIL until the GPS signal is acquired. CP Press the small knob button to apply power to the control panel. To remove power to the CP-2500, press and hold the small knob button until the message Power Down is shown on the display. (Note - This does not remove power to the NGT-2000/-2500.) 2. After power is applied, if the self test passes, the CP-2500 briefly displays OK. That is followed by the scrolling of the firmware and hardware levels of the CP-2500 (approximately 15 seconds). The CP-2500 then reverts to normal operation. 3. The display of the CP-2500 shows the operational mode on the left side of the display and the squawk code on the right side of the display as shown in Figure 2-1. 21 Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Operation Controls The CP-2500 does not require any additional controls or lamps to control the NGT-2000/ During normal operation the operation mode can be changed, the squawk code can be set, the current pressure altitude can be viewed, and optionally the Flight ID can be set. In addition pressing the I button activates the IDENT, pressing the V button changes the squawk code to a preset code, and pressing the M button provides access to the following functions: Info, activate Anonymous Mode, set the VFR Code, and maintenance. Details are provided below. Enter the Squawk Code 1. Rotate the large knob to select the squawk page. 2. Press the small knob. Observe that the left most digit blinks. 3. Rotate the small knob to change the number, rotate the large knob to select the next digit. Repeat until all digits are changed. 4. Press the small knob or allow the screen to time out to commit the change. Note: When changing the squawk code the transponder squawk code must also be changed. The recommended way of changing the squawk code is to first change the transponder and then confirm on the CP-2500 per the PUSH TO ACCEPT instructions. See messages below. Set Operational Mode Rotate the small knob to set the operation mode to ALT, On, or Standby. The Altitude (ALT) mode should always be selected unless Air Traffic Control (ATC) requests a change or if there is a known problem with the control panel or NGT-2000/ Note If the CP-2500 operational mode is set to Standby the ADS-B Out Fail lamp is ON and the ADS-B System Fail message is displayed on the CP-2500 screen. View Pressure Altitude 1. Rotate the large knob until the Altitude is shown. 2. Press the small knob view. 3. Press the small knob again to return to normal operation. 2-3

22 Operation Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Set Flight ID The flight ID function is optional and is part of the configuration options set during installation of the NGT-2000/ Rotate the large knob to select ID. 2. Press the small knob to select the first digit. 3. Rotate the small knob to change the digit (CCW) or character (CW). 4. Rotate the large knob to move the cursor to the next digit. 5. Press the small knob to commit, after all characters are entered. Deactivate the Flight ID 1. Rotate the large knob CW to move the cursor off the right side of the display. 2. Continue rotating unit only dashes fill the display. 3. Press the small knob to commit. Activate Anonymous Mode The Anonymous Mode function is optional and is part of the configuration options set during installation of the NGT-2000/ If it is not available, it will not appear In the menu. This mode may be activated if the flight is conducted in VFR and using the VFR (1200) squawk code. In anonymous mode, the unique aircraft identification is not transmitted by the UAT transmitter. Note - When in Anonymous Mode, the crew does not receive Instrument Flight Rule (IFR) or Visual Flight Rule (VFR) separation services, there is a potential loss of enhanced search and rescue benefits, and may impact ADS-B data. 1. Press the M (Menu) button. 2. Rotate the large knob to scroll the menu to Anonymous mode. 3. Press the small knob button to select enable. 4. Press the M button to exit back to normal operation. Deactivate the Anonymous Mode using the same instructions as above, but select disable. The mode can also be deactivated by pressing the V button. 2-4

23 Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Operation IDENT Activation 1. Press the I (IDT) button. 2. The IDENT message is sent by the ADS-B unit for 18 sec. 3. Observe that IDENT is displayed momentarily while this message is being sent. The use of this button is directed by Air Traffic Control (ATC). When instructed by ATC, the IDENT (IDT) must be selected ON for both the transponder and the NGT-2000/ This can be accomplished by pushing the IDENT button on each unit or with a remote IDENT push button which is connected to both the NGT-2000/-2500 and the mode A/C transponder. VFR Code Select Press the V (VFR) button to set the squawk code to a programmed VFR code that preset in the menu (see VFR code below). Typically the VFR code is set to 1200 (in the United States). Press the button again returns the code to the previous squawk code. Note - Pressing the V button also deactivates the Anonymous Mode (if it was in use). Set VFR Code The VFR code can be changed from the default (always set to 1200 in the United States). 1. Press the M (Menu) button. 2. Rotate the large knob to scroll the menu to VFR 3. Press the small knob to select the first digit. 4. Rotate the small knob to set the number. 5. Rotate the large knob to move the cursor to the next digit (4 total). 6. Press the small knob when done. This value is also used with Anonymous mode to determine when Anonymous mode is available. The Mode A code must be set to this value to allow use of Anonymous mode. 2-5

24 Operation Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 View Info 1. Press the M (Menu) button. 2. Rotate the large knob to scroll the menu to Info 3. Press the small knob button to select. 4. The Info menu option shows the following information about the unit: Status (OK or FAIL) Hardware (HW Rev) configuration Firmware (FW Rev) configuration 5. Rotate the large knob to scroll through the information. 6. Scroll to Done and press the small knob to exit. 7. Press the M button to exit back to normal operation. Maintenance This menu item is available only when the aircraft is on ground. 1. Press the M (Menu) button. 2. Rotate the large knob to scroll the menu to Maintenance. 3. For Version 1 - a. Press small knob to view status Self Test Disable. b. Turn the small knob to change status to Enable. c. Press the small knob again to activate self test. 3. For Version 2 - a. Press small knob to select Self Test. b. Press small knob again to activate self test. 4. When activated, the screen momentarily displays Test Started. followed by Test In Progress. If the optional traffic or PED display is installed, each will show three targets during the test. If the optional ADS-B Out Fail lamp or No ADS-B Coverage lamps are installed, each will flash during the test and remain illuminated while the self test results are shown. 2-6

25 Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Operation It is normal that the Fail lamp may be illuminated for up to 10 seconds after the lamps stop flashing. This does not indicate a failure. The results can be Passed, Failed, or No LRU Response. The result is shown for 10 seconds. If a failed message is seen, a series of one or more fail messages are shown on the CP-2500 screen for 5 seconds each. The possible fail messages are GPS Fail, ADS-B IN Fail, ADS-B OUT Fail, and FIS-B Fail. Note - Version 1 with SW release 1.0 through 1.3 does not show the fail message. 5. Version 1 with SW release 1.0 through 1.3 only: Press small knob to exit and return to normal operation. Note: When Done is showing on the screen it does not time out and the knob must be pressed to exit. Display Messages Messages being received from the NGT-2000/-2500 have priority over normal display operation and are seen scrolling across the display. Entering the menu mode will stop the messaging until the menu mode is exited. Rotating the large knob scrolls through the prioritized messages and the normal display operation (showing operational mode and squawk code). The display begins showing the highest priority message again after 10 seconds of no activity. The priority of the messages is discussed in the CP-2500 product manuals. The following messages may be seen during normal operation. ADS-B OUT FAIL (Version 2) or ADS-B SYSTEM FAIL (Version 1): The ADS-B out is not being transmitted by the NGT-2000/ due to the CP-2500 being in Standby Mode, the GPS position not being available for more then 2 minutes, or possibly a failure of the NGT-2000/ GPS FAIL: The GPS derived position input is not functioning. IDENT: The IDENT message is being sent by the NGT-2000/ via ADS-B Out. 2-7

26 Operation Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 MODE A CODE MISMATCH - CHECK TRANSPONDER: The NGT-2000/-2500 is not receiving a code from the transponder so it cannot verify a match. This is an indication that the transponder is not transmitting (turned off or in standby mode). GPS INIT: GPS Initialization The GPS contained within the NGT-2000/-2500 is not ready. NO ADS-B COVERAGE: No ground based transceiver has acknowledged the presence of the NGT-2000/-2500 in the system. No TIS-B, ADS-R, or FIS-B information is available. ANONYMOUS MODE: System is in Anonymous Mode. MODE A CODE MISMATCH - PUSH TO ACCEPT XXXX: The NGT-2000/-2500 is receiving a code from the transponder, but the code shown on the CP-2500 does not match. The XXXX is a representation of the code being received from the transponder. Press the small knob button to change the CP-2500 code to the same code as the transponder. Alternately, change the squawk code in the transponder to match the code entered into the CP MNT MODE: System is in maintenance mode (dataload, configuration setting, etc.) and is not broadcasting ADS-B Out. COMPATIBLE TRANSPONDER USED AS CONTROL PANEL The compatible transponder is an alternative to the CP-2500 or Push-To-Sync control. The full selection of menu items and notifications of the CP-2500 are not available to a compatible transponder. A compatible transponder must be able to Set the Operation Mode (Set Alt Reporting On/Off or Mode switching between ON, ALT, and SBY). Note: Entry of flight ID and Anonymous Mode use is not provided except through the CP

27 Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Operation Power On 1. There is no power on/off switch for the NGT-2000/ Depending on the aircraft, use either the battery switches or avionics master switch to apply power. 2. Normal operation begins within 10 seconds of applying power. During start up the unit checks for valid configuration data and initializes self tests. 3. The GPS Begins initializing. 4. The ADS-B Out Fail lamp flashes (slow rate - 1 flash per 2 seconds) for approximately 90 seconds, while the GPS is initializing. If the ADS-B Out Fail lamp stops flashing after 2 minutes and remains ON, the GPS position was not acquired. If the fail light remains ON in less than 2 minutes then a different problem has been detected. Verify that the control panel (transponder) is powered on. If the control panel is ON, cycle power to the NGT-2000/-2500 to restart GPS initialization. 5. The No ADS-B Coverage indicator lamp is ON until the aircraft is within range and acknowledged by a ground station signal. 6. If using the WiFi function, activate the PED and flight application. Based on available ADS-B service, weather data and traffic may not be seen. Note - NEXRAD updates are only transmitted every 5 minutes, and CONUS information every 15 minutes. 7. If a NGT-2500 system is installed and the optional traffic and weather displays are ON (and functioning), check display status. Based on available ADS-B service, weather data and traffic may not be seen. Note - Some traffic displays may show DATA-FAIL until the GPS signal is acquired. When operational, traffic displays show standby unless aircraft is moving > 7 knots. 2-9

28 Operation Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Controls Specific information for the operation of compatible control panel is out of scope of this Manual. Refer to the Aircraft s AFM/AFMS for specific flight guidance. Enter Mode A Squawk Code A crosscheck of the squawk code is not required when the NGT- 2000/-2500 is interfaced to a compatible transponder. The squawk code is entered via transponder and is broadcast from both the transponder and the NGT-2000/-2500 via ADS-B Out. Set Operation Mode A Standby / Operate Switch is required to stop ADS-B Out transmissions from the NGT-2000/-2500 and place it into Standby Mode. Note - The Standby / Operate switch should always be in the operate mode unless directed by ATC to stop ADS-B transmissions. An Alt On/Off switch is not required and is only an option. It is needed if the compatible transponder does not have the capability to change the NGT-2000/2500 operation mode to On. IDENT An exclusive or remove IDENT switch may also be used. Display Transponder Code Mismatch Message An external ADS-B Out Fail lamp required. The mismatch indication is indicated by the ADS-B Out Fail lamp flashing at a fast rate (2 flashes per second) in the event that the transponder is not powered on or has failed. Display Fault Indication An external ADS-B Out Fail lamp and No ADS-B Coverage lamp are required. Operational details on optional cockpit switches and indicator lamps are found under their own headings below. 2-10

30 Operation Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Controls Push-To-Sync control requires a Standby / Operate Switch to stop ADS-B Out transmission, an Alt On/Off switch, an IDENT pushbutton, and a Push-To-Sync pushbutton. The use of these switches is described below: Enter Mode A Squawk Code Change the UAT transponder s code to match the transponder. After 3 seconds the ADS-B Out Fail lamp will being to flash at a fast rate of 2 flashes per second indicating that the UAT broadcast does not match the code being received from the transponder. While the ADS-B Out lamp is flashing, press the Push-to-Sync button to change the squawk code within the UAT broadcast to match the transponder. Set Operation Mode This is equivalent to a transponder mode setting. Set the unit in ALT mode by placing the ADS-B Standby/ Operate switch to Operate and placing the Alt On/Off switch to On. This mode is typical unless otherwise directed by ATC. Set the unit in Standby mode by placing the ADS-B Standby/ Operate switch to Standby. Set the unit in On mode by placing the ADS-B Standby/Operate switch to Operate and placing the Alt On/Off switch Off. VFR Code Select Not available as an exclusive setting. Follow the Enter Mode A Squawk Code instructions to enter a particular VFR Code (1200 in the United States). Ident selection When instructed by ATC, the IDENT must be selected ON for both the transponder and the NGT-2000/ Initiate Self Test Press the Push-to-sync button while on ground. The initiated self test is only available On Ground and if the transponder is not mismatched to the UAT-Out. During the self-test the No ADS-B Fail and No ADS-B Coverage lamps flash for 10 seconds After the flashing is complete, the ADS-B Out Fail lamp can be used to assess unit status. If the NGT-2000/-2500 interfaced with traffic display or PED, observe that a standard 3 traffic display is broadcast to the cockpit display or PED application display 2-12

31 Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Operation Display Fault Indication Display of a fault condition is indicated through the Indicator Lamps when using the Push-to-Sync installation. Operational details on indicator lamps are found under their own headings below. COCKPIT SWITCHES Cockpit switches are used in place of some functions that are not available on compatible control panels or are part of the Push-To- Sync control feature. Standby / Operate This optional switch is used to stop ADS-B out transmission for standby operation. Setting this switch to Standby turns the ADS-B Fail lamp ON. The switch is always set to Operate, unless otherwise directed by ATC. IDENT This optional switch transmits an ident pulse. An ident pulse highlights the aircraft s symbol on the ATC s radar screen and is identified on the control panel when active. When instructed by ATC the IDENT must be selected ON for both the transponder and the NGT-2000/-2500 when using the CP-2500, or Push-To-Sync feature (Version 2 only), or by a single remote IDENT push button connected to both units. Push-To-Sync / Initiate Self Test Only used with the Push-To-Sync control option and available only for Version 2. This pushbutton is used to synchronize the Mode A squawk code being broadcast from the unit with the one entered in the transponder. On Ground, this switch also initiates self-test. ALT On/Off Only used with the Push-To-Sync control option and available only for Version 2. This switch will stop the broadcast of ownship altitude information when placed in the Off position. Note - This should always be set to the ALT-ON position unless otherwise directed by ATC. 2-13

32 Operation INDICATOR LAMPS Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 The indicator lamps are used to indicate the operational status of the NGT-2000/ ADS-B Out Fail This amber lamp provides the following indications: Flashes at a slow rate (1 flash per 2 seconds) when the unit is unable to transmit due to the aircraft position information being either invalid, failed, or while the GPS is initializing for approximately 90 seconds. Flashing lasts only 2 minutes before the lamp stays ON indicating that the GPS position was not acquired. If the fail lamp remains ON in less than 2 minutes, then a different problem has been detected. Verify that the compatible control panel is powered on. If the control panel is ON, cycle power to the unit. If the problem continues refer to the troubleshooting section for possible corrective actions. Flashes at a fast rate (2 flashes per second) if a Mode A code from the transponder and the Mode A code that has been sent to the NGT-2000/-2500 are not the same (Code mismatch). This can be caused by either having no code sent by the transponder (powered off or failed), or by not having the same code selected in both the CP-2500 and the transponder. For installations with an operating transponder, but without a control panel, press the Push-to-Sync button to match the codes. The lamp is ON, if the CP-2500 is set to STB, and the unit is unable to transmit when the ADS-B has failed or if the Standby / Operate switch is set to Standby. No ADS-B Coverage This Blue lamp indicates when the aircraft is not in an ADS-B ground coverage area. Only UAT air-to air traffic can be displayed. The system cannot receive TIS-B or ADS-R traffic, and no FIS-B weather can be received. The No ADS B Coverage lamp indicates if a ground station signal is being detected. The lamp is OFF when a signal is detected and ON when a signal is not detected. 2-14

33 Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 WIFI INTERFACE Operation The NGT-2000/-2500 supports the use of personal electronic devices (e.g., ipad) via a WiFi connection. The device must use compatible applications that support the ADS-B broadcast services (i.e., ADS-B In, TIS-B, ADS-R, and FIS-B). The following report messages are available: Ownship Report (geo-reference of aircraft position onto a chart) Traffic Report Weather Report The report information and its appearance on the personal electronic devices (PED) is similar to what is shown on the traffic and weather displays. See below for details. Refer to the application operations manual for instructions. Check with an avionics dealer or contact L-3 Avionics Systems for a current list of compatible applications. Note - The WiFi interface requires a WiFi Serial Adapter. This device is permanently attached to the aircraft via the wiring harness. Note - separate installation approval is required. 2-15

34 Operation TRAFFIC DISPLAY Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Compatible traffic displays can interface with the NGT-2500 to provide ADS-B traffic information. The traffic information services available are ADS-B In, TIS-B, and ADS-R. Screen information and controls may be different for each of the compatible displays. Traffic displays may not be able to process all of the ADS-B data and may show only standard traffic information. Standard Traffic (i.e. STIF) provides non-directional, diamond shaped aircraft symbology. Whereas an ADS-B equipped display (i.e. DTIF) can show triangle shaped aircraft symbology providing directional information. Note - While on ground Traffic is only displayed if the aircraft is moving at >7 kts. This is required for the GPS to provide the aircraft track so that traffic can be properly oriented. Refer to the displays operations manual for details on operation and a description of how the information is depicted. Check with an avionics dealer or contact L-3 Avionics Systems for a current list of compatible traffic displays. Pilot Advisory The ADS-B cockpit display of traffic only supplements and does not replace any operational procedure. Pilots are reminded that the airborne equipment that displays traffic (UAT, ADS-R, and TIS-B) is only for pilot situational awareness. This equipment is not approved as a collision avoidance tool and does NOT relieve the pilot of responsibility to see-and-avoid other aircraft. Any deviation from an air traffic control clearance based on cockpit information must be approved by the controlling ATC facility prior to commencing the maneuver. Uncoordinated deviations may place an aircraft in close proximity to other aircraft under ATC control not seen on the airborne equipment and may possibly result in the issuance of a pilot deviation. An intermittent TIS-B target of your aircraft maybe seen. This is typically happens during a maneuver (e.g., climbing turn) due to the radar not tracking the aircraft (ownship) as quickly as the aircraft is maneuvering. 2-16

35 Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 Operation The TIS-B position update is approximately 3-13 seconds depending on the radar coverage in which the ownship is flying. The update rate for ADS-B is approximately every second. The TIS-B system currently only sees transponder equipped aircraft when they are in a radar coverage area. No transponder = no TIS-B other aircraft. Always look outside. WEATHER DISPLAY Compatible weather displays (Wx) can interface with the NGT-2500 to provide Flight Information Service Broadcast (FIS-B) weather information using the ADS-B In link. FIS-B service is available only from a ground station that is in range. Screen information and controls may be different for each of the compatible displays. Refer to the displays operations manual for details on operation and a description of how the weather is depicted. Check with an avionics dealer or contact L-3 Avionics Systems for a current list of compatible weather displays. 2-17

37 Lynx NGT-2000/-2500 INTRODUCTION TROUBLESHOOTING CHAPTER 3 TROUBLESHOOTING Troubleshooting Use the following information to resolve issues that may occur with the NGT system. Depending on the installation a fail condition is indicated by an illuminated (not flashing) ADS-B Out Fail lamp or a message displayed on the CP Use the following information to attempt to clear the problem. An invalidity may not stop operation of the unit, but may degrade performance. Invalidities may self correct depending on the issue. When possible, it is recommended to crosscheck other cockpit displays/instruments for errors and/or data inconsistency. Verify that the aircraft has a clear view of the sky for good GPS operation. Cycle power to the NGT-2000/-2500 system. Installations using a CP-2500 Control Panel or other Control Panel should refer to that products for troubleshooting information. Installations using a display for traffic or weather should also refer to that products for troubleshooting information. If problems persist, contact an L-3 authorized dealer or Avionics Systems Field Service at (800) noting symptoms, error messages, and flight conditions. 3-1
