1 SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF AVIATION MANAGEMENT AND FLIGHT FALL 2016 Course Syllabus AF205 Flight-Instrument Theory FACULTY: Mr. Kevin M. Krongos, CFIAIME, FSTDCT Transportation Education Building 286F Office hours: MWF 10:00 to 11:00 or by appointment TIME AND LOCATION: MWF 12:00 12:50 Aviation Technologies 0116 (AVIA 116) COURSE DESCRIPTION: An academic course directed to the theory of flight by instrument. Includes classroom instruction in Federal Aviation Administration regulations pertaining to instrument flight, navigation by radio aids, aviation weather, and function, use, and limitations of instruments required for instrument flight. COURSE PREREQUISITES: AF202 Flight-Basic and Intermediate Theory REQUIRED MATERIALS: Jeppesen Instrument/Commercial Manual (JS ) REFERENCES: 2016 FAR/AIM Instrument Flying Handbook (FAA-H B) Aviation Weather & Aviation Weather Services (AC 00-45G, Change 1 & 2) Current IFR Enroute Low Altitude Chart (online) Current U.S. Terminal Procedures Publication (online) Cessna 172R Pilot Information Manual Instrument Procedures Handbook (FAA-H A) COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this academic course, the student shall be able to: 1. Identify and explain one contemporary issue of flight by reference to the flight instruments. 2. Use mathematics principles in problem solving. 3. Apply the basic principles of operation to limitations of flight instrument systems. 4. Interpret the theory behind, and use of, aviation navigational aids. 5. Apply knowledge of basic weather theory, weather hazards, and weather hazard avoidance to instrument flight planning. 6. Work to effectively solve a sampling of instrument related problems through the use of the AF205 project.

2 ATTENDANCE POLICY: - Perfect attendance will result in 10 extra credit points. - POINTS FOR PERFECT ATTENDANCE CREDIT CAN NEVER BE MADE UP. - All lectures will begin promptly at 12:00. - Students must arrive, and sign the attendance sheet, by 12:05 to receive attendance points. - In the event no instructor is present by 12:15; class will be cancelled for that day. - In the event of an EXCUSED absence, make-up of any assignment will only be available PRIOR to the date of the assignment and only by instructor approval PRIOR to the absence. - Checkrides and cross country flights are NOT considered excused absences. - All UNEXCUSED absences will result in 0 attendance points for that day. - All known absences (esp. military or sport team) must have PRIOR instructor approval. Points do not round up! - ALL textbook material, videos, lectures and assignments are TESTABLE! - One part of a 4-part full-semester comprehensive project will be due at scheduled times (see Tentative Schedule). - Successful completion of the FAA Instrument Rating Knowledge Test or FAA Instrument Instructor Knowledge Test WILL NOT substitute for the class final exam. - AF205 Currency will be used for all extra credit. AF205 Currency use is based on a strategy, all currency points shall be applied to the selected assignment PRIOR to any grading rubricks Point Extra Credit Assignment: Complete a 1-page interview of an air traffic control professional. Papers must include: 1) who was interviewed and their job title, 2) where the individual works/worked, 3) when the interview was conducted (date, time, and contact information), 4) at least 3 instrument related questions asked and the individual s responses. The individual interviewed MUST have worked as an air traffic controller (civil or military) for at least 2 years! This assignment shall be due in-class by completion of the final exam. Intentional falsification or fabrication WILL result in a one-letter grade drop on the student s final exam.

3 Semester Project There are no universally accepted procedures for IFR flight planning. In most cases, actual route selection, altitude selection, and performance requirements are determined by the PIC for each individual flight. It would be extremely difficult to make a project commensurate with all testable information tailored to each student. Therefore, this project was created to make the evaluation as fair as possible. Instead of being asked to plan an IFR cross-country, you will be required to answer questions related to a randomly selected IFR cross-country. You will need to use all information presented through the entirety of AF205. All resources (except your AF205 instructor) are fair game. Collaborative efforts are welcomed; however each student MUST turn in their own answers. This project is designed to help you become more comfortable with finding and using information for IFR flights. Likewise, this project is used to help illustrate the importance of 14 CFR ( all information regarding the flight ). This project is worth 350 points and only through attention to detail will you receive all 350 points. FURTHERMORE, SINCE THIS IS A TAKE-HOME ASSIGNMENT IT WILL BE GRADED HARSHLY! **BEWARE** PREVIOUS SEMESTER PROJECT ANSWERS WILL NOT MATCH THIS VERSION OF THE PROJECT!!

4 CLASS SPECIFIC POLICIES: - Due to the fact that AF205 meets over the lunch hour, students may bring and consume lunch. However, the student will not disrupt the class through such activities. Furthermore, it is the STUDENT S responsibility to clean-up any mess. In all cases, any student bringing in consumable items WILL CHEW WITH THEIR MOUTH CLOSED! - Use of cell phones during class WILL result a 20 point reduction in grade as well as dismissal from class for that day. If cell phone usage continues beyond 2 instances, a failing course grade will be issued for AF Changes to class policies, rules and course requirements are at the sole discretion of the instructor. However, the instructor will make every attempt to advise students of said changes as soon as practical. - The AF205 instructor WILL NOT endorsement any student for the FAA Instrument Rating Knowledge Test. The knowledge testing procedure has changed from previous semesters. - Any student who decides to commit a disrespectful or inappropriate act, as interpreted by the AF205 instructor, will be dismissed from class and docked points at the discretion of the instructor. - AF205 WILL require mandatory participation in the SIU Online campus software. Access SIU Online at: ACADEMIC DISHONESTY POLICY: Per the SIUC Student Conduct Code, academic dishonesty includes such prohibited acts as plagiarism, cheating, preparing someone else s work for them that will be turned in under their name, falsifying or manufacturing scientific or educational data, providing false information regarding academic matters, and any act to conceal, aid, or attempt any of the above. Sanctions for acts of academic dishonesty include, but are not limited to, failure of an assignment, quiz, test, examination or paper; failure in a course; revocation of a degree; suspension; or expulsion from the university.
