Bendigo Gliding Club CONTACT DETAILS Postal Address PO Box 846, Bendigo, 3552 Airfield Club House Weekends & Public Holidays only. Other times contact officers below. Airfield Piecart While Operations are in progress Contact Name Details President Rod Jewell Vice President David Tickner Secretary Mark Kerr Treasurer Stephen Baldini Safety Officer David Tickner Chief Flying Instructor Phil McCann Tug Master Phil McCann Airworthiness Administration Officer Paul Dilks The best way to find out about flying with BGC is to visit the airfield on any weekend or public holiday. Visitors are aways welcome. We can be found at 127 Borough Road, Raywood. To get to the airfield drive through Bendigo to Eaglehawk, veer right at the old town hall and follow the road to Woodvale then Raywood. Turn right at the Raywood pub and travel about 2 km on the Elmore Road to Borough Rd. Turn right and you can't miss us. If that is all too confusing try Melway Map 621 D/8. The Bendigo area is a major tourist destination and provides a range of activities to interest other family members while the family pilot is training/flying etc. For more information about Bendigo Gliding Club call: 127 Borough Rd., RAYWOOD 3570 Bendigo 27km We are here

BENDIGO GLIDING CLUB INC RAYWOOD AIRFIELD INFORMATION FOR VISITING POWER PILOTS The Bendigo Gliding Club conducts winch launch and aerotow gliding operations from its private airfield at Raywood, Victoria. The Club welcomes fly in visits from pilots of powered aircraft who wish to try gliding or would just like to see how it operates. Prior permission is required for all visiting aircraft. The following information is provided to ensure that any visiting powered aircraft can fit into the gliding operation without risk of conflict. All operations by pilots who are not members of the Bendigo Gliding Club are at the pilot s discretion and it is that pilot s responsibility to ensure that the operation can be conducted safely in all respects. Airfield Details Lat/Long: S36 32 E Location: 2nm due East of Raywood Township Elevation: 450 AMSL Runway: 36/18 Strip Length: 1,400 metres Strip Width: 90 metres Surface: Grass CTAF: Windsock: East side of runway opposite the northern most hangar and northern end of strip. Both Left and Right circuits are flown by gliders on both runways. There is no dead side. A good look out is needed at all times and particularly on base and final legs. Powered aircraft are required to keep circuits to the east of the field. This requires a left hand circuit for 18 and a right hand circuit for 36. Avoid directly overflying the houses immediately northwest of the strip. Gliders typically commence circuit at about 900 AGL at the start of the downwind leg and turn base at about 400 AGL. Gliders fly the downwind and base legs much closer to the strip than normal power circuits. Keep a good look out. Gliders also may fly very modified circuits if required due to a launch failure or unexpected heavy sink. Normal Rules of the Air apply, particularly, power must give way to gliders. What appears to be a landing strip down the centre of the runway is in fact the line along which the winch wires are towed out. Whenever operations are in progress it should be assumed that there are wires laid along the ground on this strip. The wires are usually tight but may be loose with coils up to propeller height. This strip is also the roughest part of the runway. Use the runway on either side of the centre strip (there is plenty of room) with a preference for the upwind side unless it is occupied. If there is a launch in progress you may be asked to hold away from the strip for a few minutes until it is completed. If you are given permission to land by Raywood Ground you must still satisfy yourself that it is clear and safe to do so and maintain separation as required. Raywood Ground is not an ATC service and will not provide a clearance. Do not overfly the strip, there may be a wire in the air up to 2000 AGL. If you need to check runway direction either call Raywood Ground for advice or check from abeam the strip.

Join downwind, not cross wind, (remember the possibility of wire in the air) and fly a normal circuit. There are roads at both ends of the strip and the minimum height over the fence is 50. The Raywood Airfield is owned and has been developed by the Bendigo Gliding Club for the purposes of recreational gliding and associated power flying. The significant cost of developing the facility has been met totally by the members of the Club. In the interests of fostering good relations across the various aviation types we are happy for other pilots to access the airfield. While we do not impose a formal landing fee, we would appreciate a voluntary donation from pilots taking advantage of the facilities. As a guide, $10 per aircraft per day has generally been considered reasonable by visiting pilots in the past. For any further information or permission to operate on the strip contact the Club house on ooooooooo

BENDIGO GLIDING CLUB Radio Arrangements for Raywood All r adio eq uipped ai rcraft ar e r equired to use a C ommon Traffic Advisory F requency (CTAF) to communicate when in the vicinity of non-towered aerodromes. In the absence of a ny ot her p ublished frequency t he de fault i s We h ave adopt ed t he C TAF frequency for use in the vicinity of the Raywood field. Civil Aviation Regulation 166(C) A pilot must make a broadcast whenever it is reasonably necessary to do so to avoid a collision, or risk of collision, with another aircraft. The broadcast must include: The name of the aerodrome. The aircraft type and callsign. The position of the aircraft and the pilot's intentions. What does it mean? For other aircraft Any aircraft flying in the vicinity of Raywood will now know that other traffic in the vicinity of the field will be o n an d should l isten for t raffic a nd g ive appr opriate over-flying or inbound calls at 10 nm on that frequency. For our operations When on the ground or in the air in the vicinity of Raywood all aircraft are required to listen out and broadcast on Once away from the airfield pilots can change to any of the gliding frequencies for cross country operations. In normal circumstances the Club will use for this purpose. When returning to Raywood change to listen out and give the normal inbound and circuit calls. A p re-takeoff call on will be r equired immediately before each launch to alert other traffic t hat a l aunch i s t aking pl ace. This will be do ne for a w inch l aunch by t he pilot immediately before signalling take up slack. In aerotow operations the tug pilot will give the call for the combination. As i s not a g liding f requency al l so lo pi lots will need t o have a R adio Log B ook endorsement. It is proposed that the Raywood Ground (the pie cart) monitor both (to be aware of approaching t raffic) a nd ( for co mmunications with B GC g liders away from the circuit). We are not in the vicinity of Bendigo so there is no need to monitor If yo u are unsure of any of this it is strongly recommended you print out and read Airways and Radio Procedures for Glider Pilots which is available o n t he GF A website.

A Guide to Radio Calls at Raywood Remember that the order of things is Aviate, Navigate and Communicate in that order. The CTAF for Raywood is Important :- The pie cart should be referred to as Raywood Ground, not, Raywood Base. This conforms to normal aircraft radio convention and removes the risk of the call being confused with a Base circuit traffic broadcast. What is the purpose of your call? If the purpose of your call is to alert any ot her aircraft as to your position and/ or intentions then your call should be addressed to Raywood Traffic. You should also include Raywood at the end of your call to confirm which traffic the call is intended for. If the purpose of your call is to contact another aircraft then address your call to the appropriate call sign. Advisory ca lls in the ci rcuit a re Raywood Traffic ca lls, no t Raywood Ground. The pi e ca rt doesn t care where you are in the circuit but other unknown aircraft might have a vital interest. You should only address your call to Raywood Ground if your message is directed to the ground station, eg a cross country position report. Examples Joining Circuit Raywood Traffic, Golf Yankee Charlie is joining downwind (or, depending on position in circuit at time of transmission, downwind/late downwind/turning base, etc) for a left (or right) circuit for runway 36 (or 18). Raywood. Returning from x-country (at about 10 nm) Raywood Traffic, this is Golf Bravo X-Ray, 10 miles to the north, three thousand, inbound. Raywood. X-country Position Report Raywood Ground this is Golf Yankee Charlie Over/Abeam/Approaching/Departing, Elmore Seven thousand Five four Tracking for Pyramid Hill (Who you are) (Location) (Height) (Time in minutes past the hour) (Intention). Use common sense. If you cannot remember the exact terminology use plain English. ooooooooo

Radio Call Cheat Sheet The following calls are an indication of what you can expect to hear and what others will expect to hear from you. Note that for aviation purposes nautical miles are the standard, not kilometres. (1 nm = 2 km approx) Launch Raywood traffic, winch launch commencing runway (18 or 36). wire to 2500 feet, do not overfly the field. Raywood Returning to Circuit Raywood traffic, glider.. (Your Callsign). is 10 miles.. (Direction) at (Altitude).., inbound. Raywood Downwind Call Raywood traffic, glider.(your Callsign) turning downwind, left/right hand circuit, runway (Runway). Raywood Base Turn Call Raywood traffic, glider.(your Callsign) turning left/right base, runway (Runway)., Raywood Turning Final Raywood traffic, glider. (Your Callsign) turning final, runway (Runway). full stop, Raywood The idea is to enhance see and avoid. Listen to traffic calls and develop situational awareness to assist in avoiding conflict. There is no need to respond to broadcast calls unless you believe it is reasonably necessary for safety.
