DATE ISSUED 20/02/2011 EFFECTIVE FROM 01/04/2011 GLIDING CLUB UNTIL ORDER NUMBER TITLE OF ORDER FO-1 INTRODUCTION Pilots flying to or from Tibenham Airfield, whether club members or visitors, will comply with various rules and guidelines as amended from time to time including this Flying Order Book - Gliders, the Flying Order Book - Power (both NGC publications), the Laws And Rules For Glider Pilots as laid down by the British Gliding Association (BGA), the Air Navigation Order (ANO), and any other laws, rules, regulations and guidance relating to their licence from time to time in force. Page 1

DATE ISSUED 20/02/2011 EFFECTIVE FROM 01/04/2011 GLIDING CLUB FO-2 FLYING FROM Normal club flying days are Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, providing a BGA Rated Instructor or an Approved instructor is available. If no Rated Approved instructor is available, then Flying Order FO-13 applies. No training or Trial Lessons will take place unless there is a Full Rated or Approved Assistant Rated instructor present, who has agreed to oversee the flying operation. Pilots cleared as Self Authorising and with the minimum qualification of BGA Silver Badge wishing to fly cross country other than on club flying days shall refer to Flying Order FO-13. On any day, the most senior Duty Instructor is in overall charge of flying operations. Whenever possible, one of the Duty Instructors (Basic included) will remain on the ground in charge of flying operations. It is therefore, of the utmost importance that all Instructors honour their duty days. It is the Instructor s responsibility to arrange a stand-in if unable to do a duty. If there is only one Duty Instructor present, then he/she may nominate a responsible, willing adult Full Flying club member to take charge of the airfield while the instructor is flying. The nominated person must be appropriately briefed by the Duty Instructor. This applies to aerotow operations. For Winch operations, see FO-11. Page 2

DATE ISSUED: 08/09/2007 EFFECTIVE FROM: 08/09/2007 GLIDING CLUB FO-3 FLYING (METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS) Aerotows will only take place when the pilot of the tug is able to operate within the conditions of the Air Navigation Order (VMC). The same conditions apply to motor glider pilots. Winch launches must conform to the legal weather minima as laid down in the current edition of Laws and Rules for Glider Pilots. Winch launching may take place in surface winds of up to 30 knots (including gusts) if a Full Rated Instructor is present and actively in charge. The winch launch limit when an Assistant Rated Instructor is in charge is 25 knots (including gusts). Flying will not take place when there is snow or ice on the runways, although the ultimate decision rests with the CFI or his Deputy. Page 3

DATE ISSUED 20/02/2011 EFFECTIVE FROM 01/04/2011 GLIDING CLUB FO-5 CIRCUIT PATTERNS GLIDERS AND TUGS Circuit patterns (NOT OPPOSING) will be decided on a daily basis by the Duty Instructor. Suggested default patterns are: Runway Gliders/Tugs Runway Gliders/Tugs 03 RIGHT 21 LEFT 26 RIGHT 08 LEFT 15 RIGHT 33 RIGHT It is recognised there may be occasions when good airmanship requires the use of a different circuit to those outlined above. Gliders/Tugs equipped with radio should make a downwind call including airfield, call sign, position, runway, pattern. Any touchdowns on 26 behind the undershoot line will require automatic circuit planning training with the Duty Instructor. The climb-out for 03 is straight ahead over the road. The climb-out for 33 includes an early right turn to avoid overflying the village. Channonz Hall and Hill Farm will not be over-flown below 500 feet agl. Page 5

DATE ISSUED 04/02/2018 EFFECTIVE FROM 04/02/2018 GLIDING CLUB FO-6 CHOICE OF RUNWAY Winch launching may only take place when in the opinion of the duty Instructor there are safe options to land following a launch failure.in practice this means that following a launch failure from a normal winch launch gliders will have reached a safe height from which to perform an abbreviated circuit before running out of runway ahead ahead upon which to land safely(i.e. overlapping options) First runway choice will be runway 21/03 unless safer overlapping options are available on an alternative runway or the cross-wind component, including gusts, exceeds 12kts.In light or zero wind conditions an alternative runway or a longer run on the same runway may be considered so as to provide safer overlapping options following launch failures. Landings on grass will be encouraged as far as possible for gliders, providing ground conditions allow. If 21/03 cannot be used, the runway to be used will be decided by the Senior Duty Instructor in liaison with the Duty Tug Pilot. Operating from runway 08 may involve separate launch points with winching from the grass stub and aerotowing from the 08/ main runway intersection. Such dual operations are more challenging and must be considered carefully and be at the discretion of the Duty Instructor who will need to take into account tug/glider parking, where cables and broken cables will fall, traffic to and from the rigging area, the number of experienced members available to make it all work, etc. When using the full length of runway 26, only one car is permitted near the launch point. If however, the winch can be put at the far end of the grass stub, then the intersection with 33 may be used as a launch point in the normal manner. If using the full length of 03/21 the control cabin will be positioned on the grass. Vehicles at the launch point to be kept to a minimum and parked in line behind the control cabin. Page 6

GLIDING CLUB Hangar landings on the grass should take place parallel to the peritrack and NEVER directly towards the clubhouse/hangar complex. All hangar landings must be notified to and sanctioned by the Duty Instructor and can only be carried out by pilots of Bronze C and above. Page 7

DATE ISSUED 20/02/2011 EFFECTIVE FROM 01/04/2011 GLIDING CLUB FO-6A USE OF RUNWAYS 15 OR 08 Launching from the intersections of 03/21 using runways 15 or 08 requires special thought because the runs are short. Due to climb-out obstacles and restricted options in the event of launch failures, the following criteria are to be complied with: the head-wind component must be at least 15knots, launches must be specifically authorised by the Duty Instructor, each launch is to be individually briefed, by the Duty Instructor in conjunction with the Glider Pilot and the Tug Pilot if aerotowing. For aerotowing, the briefing should include the climb-out path to be used and the Eventuality options for both tug and glider, as P.1 of the combination the Tug Pilot has the ultimate responsibility for ensuring the safe operation of the launch and should only agree to carry it out once certain it can be conducted safely, low experience Glider or Tug Pilots of less than 25 solo launches in their respective roles should not use this launch direction. Page 8

DATE ISSUED 04/02/2018 EFFECTIVE FROM 04/02/2018 GLIDING CLUB FO-7 FLYING TRAINING No instructor may instruct at Tibenham without the permission of the CFI. Trial Lessons (Basic Instruction) may only be given by Instructors holding a current BGA Full, Assistant, or Basic Instructor Rating. Basic Instructors must not exceed the limitations of their syllabus. Basic Instructional flights must be under the direct supervision of a Full Rated Instructor or an Assistant Rated Instructor who has successfully completed the Approved instructor training. Spin training may only be completed in a glider capable of performing the spin manoeuvres as detailed in the current BGA Instructors handbook. Pilots may not fly solo until this training is completed and signed off. To fly the Puchacz as P1 the pilot must have successfully completed spin training in the Puchacz No pupil is to be sent on a first solo without the authorisation of a Full Rated Instructor. This Instructor must ensure that all the exercises in the Training Syllabus have been satisfactorily completed and signed off before sending the pupil solo. Before coming off the 10 post-solo checks, one of the last three flights must be with a current Full Rated NGC Instructor. At the conclusion of the 10 post-solo checks, the pupil may only be signed off if the Instructor is satisfied with all the exercises carried out. Pupils satisfactorily completing the post solo check and who have not already converted to a club single seater, may do so with a satisfactory conversion flight supervised by an Assistant or Full Rated Instructor. Instruction may only be given within weight limitations. Some gliders may be dual placarded allowing non-aerobatic/heavier pilot combinations. Page 9

DATE ISSUED: 08/09/2007 EFFECTIVE FROM: 08/09/2007 GLIDING CLUB FO-7A FURTHER FLYING TRAINING Solo pilots who have not yet reached self-authorisation status (i.e. a minimum of Bronze Badge with Cross Country Endorsement and the authorisation of the CFI or his deputy) are considered to be still under training. They may, therefore, only fly when supervised. This means: they must obtain clearance to fly from the Duty Instructor, they must be briefed before they fly, the flight should be observed (preferably by the briefing instructor), the pilot must be debriefed as soon after the flight as possible, if more than one instructor is on duty, all briefings should be carried out by the same instructor. These rules apply to both winch and aerotow launches. Page 10

DATE ISSUED 20/02/2011 EFFECTIVE FROM 01/04/2011 GLIDING CLUB FO-8 BRIEFING OF PILOTS The Duty Instructor will normally run a morning briefing before flying starts. The briefing will include: local NOTAM update, likely local weather, circuit pattern, allocation of club aircraft, special considerations. It is the responsibility of all pilots to be briefed by a Duty Instructor before flying and to have presented their log book to him / her for inspection (see FO-9 below). Cross country pilots are responsible for obtaining up to date NOTAM and weather information for their flight. Page 11

DATE ISSUED 20/02/2011 EFFECTIVE FROM 01/04/2011 GLIDING CLUB FO-9 PRODUCTION OF LOG BOOKS AND PROGRESS CARDS Members intending to fly P1 must produce their Log Book, (and Progress Cards if applicable) for inspection by the Duty Instructor. Pilots may not fly P1 until their logbooks have been checked by the Duty Instructor. The exception to this rule applies to self-authorising pilots on non-club flying days, and pilots flying in competitions at Tibenham. Full or Assistant category Instructors, may refuse to allow a pilot to fly (or to require a check flight) if his/her log book is not available at any time prior to flying P1 and the pilot s currency or ratings are in doubt. Page 12

DATE ISSUED 20/02/2011 EFFECTIVE FROM 01/04/2011 GLIDING CLUB FO-10 CHECK FLIGHTS Following an absence from flying all pilots must have a check flight with an Instructor as follows: Below Silver Badge and less than 50 hours P1 DI s discretion (max. 4 weeks) Below Silver Badge and more than 50 hours P1 after 4 weeks Silver Badge and more than 50 hours P1 after 6 weeks These are not minima for staying current, but safety valves to ensure re-training as required by an absence from gliding. New solo pilots will remain on Pre-Solo Checks until the completion of a minimum of 10 (aerotow) or 20 (winch-launch) check flights on different days. Successful checks to be immediately followed by a solo flight, which may be in an Astir (at the discretion of the checking Instructor). Once these checks have been completed, pilots become responsible for presenting themselves for checks at their 20th, 40th, 60th, 80th and 100th solo launches. Pilots will take annual currency checks with a Rated Instructor as per FO 10A below. The Duty Instructor, CFI or Deputy CFI may require a pilot to take a check flight at any time at his or her discretion. Page 13

DATE ISSUED: 8/9/2007 EFFECTIVE FROM: 8/9/2007 GLIDING CLUB FO-10A ANNUAL CHECK FLIGHTS All pilots will take a two-part annual currency check flight, apart from Assistant and Full Rated Instructors who conform to the current BGA checking system. One part of the check must be taken with a fully rated Instructor and should include any, or all of the syllabus items at the discretion of the Instructor. Annual check flights can not be considered complete without the consent of a Fully Rated Instructor. Solo Pilots have a honeymoon period between October 1 st and December 31 st to complete their check flights, after this point the privilege of solo flight is withdrawn until annual checks are complete. Page 14

DATE ISSUED 04/02/2018 EFFECTIVE FROM 04/02/2018 GLIDING CLUB FO-11 WINCH LAUNCHING No winch launching may take place unless there is a Full or Assistant Rated Approved Instructor present on the airfield, who has agreed to oversee the flying operation. Winch launches will only take place from the grass unless the grass is unsuitable for launching. If this is the case then the runway may be used at the discretion of the Duty Instructor. The grass must be cut to less than 5 centimetres in length for a minimum length of 50 metres in order to provide a suitable runway for winch launching. The primary method of signalling the winch will be via the radio with the lights as a duplicate for the stop signal. Radio may be used to advise the winch driver of the glider type and which cable to use. Lights and radio may not be used simultaneously to issue launch instructions with the exception of the Stop instruction. The person attaching the cable to the glider is responsible for checking the launch is clear to proceed, and should also act as signaller. More detailed ptocedures are given in the Cabin Operations Manual ALSO SEE FO-2 AND FO-3 Page 15
