1 ISSUE 59 JANUARY /GABINFO-DEC/2008 Contact: African Cities to Convene at Africa Investor Tourism Summit London, 22 January Africa investor (Ai), the pan-african investment group, are to host the long awaited Ai Tourism Investor Summit and Awards, in association with the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Mozambique. The Summit is due to take place at the Joaquim Chissano Conference Centre in Maputo, Mozambique on the 26th - 27th February The Tourism investor Summit will be opened by His Excellency Armando Emílio Guebuza, President of Mozambique, who will launch the new Mozambique national brand at a gala event on the 26 th February. The second day of the Summit will be officially open by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Mozambique, Her Excellency Luisa Diogo, who will be followed by remarks from the Minister of Tourism and other dignitaries of the Tourism Industry. African cities and local governments are pioneering initiatives that will make 2010 a year of growth and opportunity for tourism in Africa. A number of initiatives have been launched to promote both countries and municipalities as tourism destination; with cities and municipalities, Egypt, South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Gabon, Senegal, Uganda, Nigeria, Angola and several other countries making substantial investments in marketing at a national and international level. With this in mind, and inspired by the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) Association, Africa investor has developed a dedicated Tourism Investor City of the Year Award, presented as part of the Tourism Investor Awards. The Tourism investor Awards are designed to showcase Africa s opportunities and achievements to the rest of the world and reward those groups developing the African tourism industry as a vehicle to drive sustainable economic growth. The Tourism investor City of the Year Award recognizes, innovation and excellence in local tourism investment initiatives and highlights local initiatives that build the image of cities in Africa to domestic and international tourism investors. The award extends to any recognised city in Africa, and has attracted entries from director generals, mayors, district/city/municipal commissioners, heads of town planning, and city development managers. The Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Mozambique are the host sponsors, The Ministry of Tourism and National Parks of Gabon and Food Concepts & Entertainments are Gold sponsors of the Summit. They are joined by a number of international partners including the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Africa Travel Channel, Africa Travel Association, the New Partnership for Africa s Development (NEPAD) and the NEPAD Business Group. Commenting on the Awards Professor Geoffrey Lipman, Assistant Secretary General of the UNWTO) said: These Awards are the only initiative designed to recognise the achievement of those businesses, governments, organisations and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the growth of sustainable tourism investment in Africa.
