6 The Growth of the Natural Resource Sector: Potential Impacts on Mozambique s Competitiveness Throughout the world the phenomenon of discovery, extraction, and export of natural resources has led to structural transformations and economic changes including in some cases the extinction of certain sectors of the economy. Based on experiences in other countries what are the potential impacts of these macroeconomic changes in Mozambique? What can be done to ensure that Mozambicans take best advantage of these phenomena? USAID s business environment improvement program (SPEED) in partnership with the Confederation of Trade Associations (CTA) has undertaken a series of studies which seek to answer these questions.
