With careful guidance from CLI s team of Western and Chinese educators (see /team), we warmly invite you to guide us as we help develop your personalized China Seminar. Throughout this process, our team provides three core services: (1) assistance in developing the program itinerary; (2) comprehensive pre-departure assistance (see /hkust); and (3) facilitation of in-country logistical provisions (e.g. airfare, buses, housing accommodations, restaurant recommendations and bookings, activity planning, and tour guides). JULY 27 JULY 31: BEIJING CULTURE AND BUSINESS The Beijing portion of the China Seminar will provide students broad insight into China s cultural heritage and modern ascension. Students will stay at a hotel in the capital city and will spend several days visiting key historical and cultural sites and companies. MONDAY, JULY 27 (HONG KONG TO BEIJING) TUESDAY, JULY 28 (BEIJING) WEDNESDAY, JULY 29 (BEIJING) Welcome to China! Check in at hotel Participate in CLI s comprehensive program orientation Enjoy welcome dinner at Peking Duck restaurant Visit Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City Tour Ming Dynasty era hutong district, followed by lunch at local family s home Dinner at Xinjiang specialty restaurant Visit Beijing 798 art district The 798 art district is a famous commercial and creative hub for China s burgeoning artistic community and art industry.

2 THURSDAY, JULY 30 (BEIJING) FRIDAY, JULY 31 (BEIJING) / SATURDAY, AUGUST 1 (BEIJING) All day University Lecture on China s Economic Ascension at Renmin University Meet with local business students for one-on-one cultural exchange Dinner and shopping in Wangfujing, Beijing s famous outdoor market district Visit the Great Wall of China at Mutianyu Free day SUNDAY, AUGUST 2 (BEIJING TO GUILIN) Fly to Guilin BEIJING COMPANY VISITS At CLI, we recognize that the prestigious programs we work with are well connected to business and academic networks in Beijing. Leaving open slots in the itinerary allows flexibility for students to draw on their school s network to schedule their own meetings. Upon request, CLI is happy to organize additional visits through our alumni network and through the Wharton School and Yale networks via our directors. 3 AUGUST 2 AUGUST 23: GUILIN LANGUAGE AND BUSINESS During the Guilin portion of the China Seminar, students will improve their Chinese language ability and deepen their understanding of important cultural themes and business trends in China. Students will advance their language skills through 20 weekly hours of Mandarin classes at CLI, daily interaction with a range of Chinese peers and teachers, and constant immersion in the language learning environment. The following includes a list of lectures, company visits, cultural activities, and travel excursions that will be included in this year s. INTENSIVE CHINESE LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION In addition to facilitating China Seminars for leading academic institutions around the world, CLI operates one of the foremost institutes for Chinese language acquisition in China. As part of the HKUST China Seminar, students will be provided with: 16 weekly hour of small group Mandarin instruction (no more than five students per class) 4 weekly hours of one-on-one Mandarin instruction GUILIN GUEST LECTURES CLI offers lecture opportunities to students both independently and through our partner institution, Guangxi Normal University (GXNU). Below is a sampling of lecture topics that have been offered in the past. At least two lectures will be made available to HKUST students during the China Seminar. Professor Liu, Professor of Chinese History, GXNU Topic: Introduction to Modern Chinese History Dr. Qin, Former Vice Director of College of International Culture and Education, GXNU Topic: China s Post-1978 Economic Transition Professor He, Partner, GTInvestments Topic: Investing in China s Economic Boom Dr. Bai, Professor of Tourism, Guilin Institute of Tourism Topic: Impact of Tourism on China s Environment and Economy GUILIN COMPANY VISITS The following is a list of company visits in Guilin which may be of interest to HKUST students. Arrangement of at least six company visits are included in the program fee. Gain exclusive access to Club Med Guilin, the second resort in China by the famous French company, and meet for Q&A with the property s vice president (Cornell MMH, 13) Visit Modern English, an American-founded and managed English training school Participate in presentation and open discussion at Webgle, a software development firm

4 Visit Share, a company that produces soap products for China s domestic market Visit Woodpecker, the only China-based dental supply company approved by the USFDA Tour a local plastics recycling factory with the founding director Visit a Chinese national tourism company for discussion of Guilin s tourism-based economy Tour the Guilin Li Quan brewery, Guilin s largest beer producer Explore founding and development of CLI in roundtable discussion with American directors Tour the Guilin central broadcast television station with vice director See the only Guilin photography studio that produces commercial drone videos Visit a local cartoon design company GUILIN CULTURAL ACTIVITIES CLI is happy to offer each of the below cultural activities to HKUST students during the China Seminar. CLI hosts a variety of additional learning-based activities, events, and excursions each week throughout the year which are open to all students. Visit Guangxi Normal University (GXNU) for tour and direct cultural exchange with local students Climb Chuan Mountain for scenic view of Guilin and enjoy dinner at the foot of the mountain Visit a local Buddhist monastery within the caves of Seven Star Park Sample tea and learn about Daoist philosophy and worldview at a local Daoist teahouse Take a walking tour of Guilin s famous Four Lakes, Two Rivers region WEEKEND TRAVEL EXCURSIONS The following weekend travel excursions will be included in the : Yangshuo (four hours south of Guilin by boat, two hours by bus) Take the famous Li River boat cruise to Yangshuo Tour Yangshuo s countryside and karst landscape Visit the West Street commercial and restaurant district Longsheng Rice Terraces (2.5 hours northwest of Guilin) Participate in meetings with key local leaders Hike from Ping an Village to Dazhai Village through the region s famous rice terraces Please see the following page for additional information.

5 PROGRAM FEE The per participant program fee for the HKUST Summer 2015 China Seminar, including, but not limited to, all services and specifications listed above and airfare to all program sites is 3,350 USD. A minimum enrollment of 25 participants is required for the program to be held. GUILIN-ONLY PROGRAM OPTION If HKUST prefers students spend the entire four weeks in Guilin (rather than one week in Beijing and three weeks in Guilin), CLI is happy to offer the exact program as described with the one exception of replacing the week in Beijing with an additional week in Guilin. The per participant program fee for a Guilin-only program is 2,885 USD.
