2 64 years of the Glenmore Lodge idea Cairngorm Adventure at Glenmore Lodge is the title of the book, about Glenmore Lodge, published in 1952 and written by Catherine M Loader, the technical representative of the Central Council for Physical Recreation at the time. The foreword of the book was written by Lord Malcolm Douglas Hamilton... The aim from the beginning was not only to give young people the opportunity of an introduction to the treasures that a true appreciation of the country can provide, but also to inspire young men and women so much with the idea of what can be done by healthful outdoor recreation and nature study that they would act in their own localities as advocates of what can now be called the Glenmore idea. Catherine Loader worked in an era before it was normal for organisations to articulate their corporate vision, but we would hope that she would have approved of what we say today: Our vision is for Scotland to be the most enlightened outdoor sport community in the world. We will do this by providing world-class training and leadership and being an inspirational catalyst that enables our nation to experience the wide-ranging benefits of physical recreation in our countryside. 5 Bob s update Glenmore Lodge has a reputation as a UK role model and benchmark for people-friendly training, safety and coaching in outdoor and adventure sports. All of the staff who work here at the National Centre share a passion for outdoor sport and inspiring adventure in others. We are committed to making your stay with us an enjoyable experience. We are well placed to deliver training at all levels in a friendly and welcoming environment. It never ceases to amaze me how many people come back to visit, sometimes decades later, but all with the same sentiment of very fond memories of their Glenmore Lodge experience. Of course The Lodge has also developed over time and it is a more comfortable place than it used to be. We continue to make improvements to our facilities and apart from the chalets, all our accommodation is now en-suite, with under-floor heating. Glenmore Lodge is not just about providing training courses; we play a central supporting and leadership role in the outdoor and adventure sports community as a whole. We are a resource, an information source, we act as a catalyst for change where needed and we set the tone for quality and accessibility in outdoor training. Increasingly we run a large number of bespoke tailor made training courses, as well as being an excellent venue for meetings and conferences. We like to think of ourselves as the national home for outdoor and adventure sport, a home where everyone is welcome and is able to share in our passion for inspiring adventure. We look forward to welcoming you here. Bob Kinnaird, Principal Caring for the environment Being based at the heart of the Cairngorms National Park we are reminded daily of the beauty of our surroundings and the need to preserve them for future generations. From the very first course 65 years ago, environmental knowledge and awareness have been part of our syllabus. Many of our instructors have now become Leave No Trace trainers. In more recent times this has become more than just teaching environmental sustainability, but, demonstrating it throughout every area of our business. Renewable energy is a key focus of our future business plan. We have had photovoltaic panels for a few years now and in January 2013, our new biomass boiler was commissioned. The biomass boiler provides heat and hot water for our East and South Wings and heat for our activity wing. This change has reduced our reliance on gas, further reducing our carbon footprint and costs. The reduction of waste is also a business priority. Big Hanna, our food composter, turns all of our non-meat food waste into high quality compost. Throughout the centre we have also increased the visibility of our recycling points, which is helping to decrease the volume of waste sent to landfill. Our involvement doesn t stop with these headline projects; this year our Environmental Fund has again donated 3k to local projects, including giving a number of 12 man bothy bags to the local primary schools who have already used them on school trips, for forest schools and other outdoor activities. In 2012 we won 2 awards; the first was the Goldstar award in the Best Outdoor Centre category of the Green Tourism Business Awards, whilst the second award saw us winning the category of Best Public Sector Environmental Provision at the Scottish Green Awards. We don t rest on our laurels: so far in 2013 we have already switched over to Ecolab cleaning products throughout the business which are much more environmentally friendly. Each year we are audited by The Green Tourism Business Scheme and continually seek to improve on the last audit s score. We are well placed to deliver training at all levels in a friendly and welcoming environment. It never ceases to amaze me how many people come back to visit, sometimes decades later, but all with the same sentiment of very fond memories of their Glenmore Lodge experience.... Bob Kinnaird, Principal For those interested in gaining a greater knowledge of environmental awareness and the sustainability of outdoor activity, The Environment for Outdoor Leaders course we offer focuses on this specifically and empowers participants to share this knowledge with their own students. 08 Book at Follow us on facebook and twitter 09

Over 60 people a year benefit from the scheme and it continues to grow every year. If you offer your services for free, helping to guide, coach or teach others, then the Granger s Volunteer Fund can help to support you. 10 Winter in the Cairngorms National Park The granite hills of the Cairngorms were carved out during the last ice age. The glaciers have left behind the UK s only semi-tundra landscape on the Cairngorm Plateau, providing an incredible backdrop for winter walking and mountaineering. Unique wildlife, challenging weather conditions and stunning remote mountain tops are just some of the reasons why people travel here from all over the UK. The world-famous Northern Corries of t-sneachda and Lochain form a winter climbing venue of world class stature. Climbs of all grades within only an hour of parking ensure a huge range of choice and maximise your time on the route. It s no wonder that Glenmore Lodge, the UK s oldest outdoor centre was established here. Whilst other centres, courses and individuals travel hundreds of miles to make the most of the Cairngorms we offer the closest accommodation to the hill. You get to enjoy the incredible view from the breakfast table, with the knowledge that no-one knows the Cairngorms as well as our instructional team. No other centre has, in-house, the same depth of knowledge and experience as the Glenmore Lodge team. Choosing your winter course As individuals, we have very unique ways in which we approach the learning and development of new skills; this of course depends on our physical abilities and learning style. Our instructors are very experienced in tailoring their coaching to the individual needs of course participants. Details of the techniques and skills that each course is based on, as well as information about the previous experience and level of fitness required, can be found in the full course notes online. Our Choosing Your Course framework provides a means for you to gauge the level of physical and technical ability a particular course may require and how our courses can potentially relate to each other. For example, our 5 day Winter Mountaineering course has a greater level of difficulty and requires a higher level of fitness than the 2 day introduction course. With our 5 day Winter Mountaineering, you will spend 5 consecutive days on the hill: the physical demands are greater and the extra time will allow you to develop more independence and enable us to support you through more practical applications of the skills. Choosing a course appropriate to your aim and needs is crucial. This table should only serve as a guide to the approximate physical and technical challenge of the course. If you have any questions about which course is right for you, please do not hesitate to contact our experienced staff, who will be only too happy to discuss which course would be suitable for you. 11 Winter walking & winter skills The mountains in winter become an entirely different prospect. Clothing systems, navigation, avalanche risk, conditions under-foot and length of day are just a few of the many complex elements that all interact, affecting your performance and safety. There are also new technical skills including the use of crampons and ice axes. Our winter walking and winter skills courses are designed to introduce you to all of these areas, building upon your awareness of the winter mountain environment but more importantly, starting to develop the technical skills and decision making processes to ensure you can enjoy it safely. These courses form the first steps in our winter programme and are the stepping stones that can spark an interest leading to a lifetime of winter walking, mountaineering or climbing. Guided Winter Walking - 2 days This is designed for those looking to take their first steps into our winter wonderland. Being more of a guided experience, these 2 days will enable you to see what it is all about, minus the hard skills of using crampons and an axe. They have been through all of these awards themselves and they know how nervous people can be. We work hard to ensure not only a fair and even assessment for all, but a relaxed environment enabling you to perform at your best. Even these more formal courses can still offer good training for someone who, for example, wishes to gain a high level of mountain competence but who may not wish to develop the award further. This is fine and MT.UK happily invites anyone who has 20 quality mountain days to register and then attend a Summer Mountain Leader Training course, even if you have no intention of proceeding to assessment. All governing body courses require you to register before you attend a training course. It is therefore Glenmore Lodge s policy not to accept any governing body course bookings without your candidate reference number. We then get on to the meat of the course where we cover common problems faced with biking. Namely : fixing a puncture / changing a tyre, changing brake pads, simple gear adjustments and what tools you may need both at home and out on the trail. If you can, bring along your own bike, no matter what type road, MTB, hybrid, etc. That way you ll get to practise on it. This course is suitable for all types of cyclist; road or off road. Suitable for anyone who owns a bike or wants to keep one in working order. Ideal even for parents who want to keep their kids bikes on the road without frequent trips to the local bike shop. Pre-requisites: No prior bike maintenance knowledge is required. Velotech Cycle Mechanic Qualifications These courses are primarily aimed at Trail Cycle and Mountain Bike Leaders (or equivalent) and those that are either running a fleet of bikes for schools, centres or their own business. However, they are equally valuable to individuals who are passionate about cycling. Delivered by Velotech approved mechanics. They all have extensive mechanical and biking knowledge and experience. In simple terms Silver is all about how to make adjustments (gears, brakes etc) on the bike and Gold moves on to replacing and servicing all components on the bike. We recommend the Silver level for anyone working as part of a team that is running a fleet of bikes and those regularly riding who want to be able to fully service their bike. The Gold award is an industry recognised entry point for cycle mechanics and is better suited to one in charge of fleets of bikes and those managing other staff. TCL and Level 2 award holders are best suited to look at the Silver award as a way of adding great value to their experience and collecting some very appropriate CPD. The Gold award would be ideal for MBL and Level 3 award holders to really professionalise their portfolio. These courses involve on-going training and informal assessment, as well as a multiple choice paper. Generally candidates will attend and pass the Silver award before going forward for the Gold. Please the bike dept directly if you have any queries as to where to enter the scheme. bike@glenmorelodge.org.uk Velotech Silver - 2 days Certifies the candidate to be able to adjust rather than assemble components on their bicycles. It also enables the candidate to assess the safety and track worthiness of a bike. Topics covered include: workshop safety, tools and lubricants, headsets, brake set up, gears, bottom bracket, hubs, basic wheel truing and pre-delivery inspection. Assessment is ongoing throughout the 2 days via observation, testing and questioning. Ideal for TCL and MBL holders looking for CPD and a greater depth of knowledge, as well as teachers, outdoor pursuits instructors, youth leaders and those working with fleets of bikes. Pre-requisites: Prior experience of bike maintenance. Velotech Gold - 2 days Qualifies the successful candidate to completely strip the bike down to its component parts, replace or reassemble as appropriate. The successful candidate will demonstrate a greater depth of knowledge of systems and on a variety of styles of bike and problem solving than they did at Silver. Assessment is ongoing throughout the 2 days via observation, testing and questioning. This is the starting point for a career as a mechanic and is therefore aimed at those looking to work in the cycle trade and those responsible for fleet bikes at schools, centres etc. as well as MBL and Level 3 award holders. Pre-requisites: Be fully competent with all aspects of the Silver award and have background knowledge of a greater variety of cycle brands, models and / or systems of cycle components. 56 Book at Follow us on facebook and twitter 57

It is the culmination of many years of development and represents the latest information to create and support mountain bike leaders working in the UK and abroad. It will also lead to further levels of award that will be relevant to working in Europe and beyond. There are, at present, three levels on offer and candidates will gather all the relevant info to register with the scheme through their home nation website e.g. Level 1 A site-specific award designed for organisations such as outdoor education centres. To cover conditions beyond this there are 3 extension modules, winter and night riding, as well as multi day expeditions. All extension modules can be taken after achieving the TCL award. There are two separate sides to the course,, one half looks at the inspection and recording of trails under your responsibility using industry standard language, the other half on how to affect simple and sustainable repairs to the trails. If your club is affiliated with the CTC then there are insurance options to support this whole process once qualified. We have been involved in delivering coaching, leadership and performance award courses, along with supporting the development of these qualifications for as long as we have been paddling. We work closely with the SCA and BCU in developing the sport. We have been, and still are, involved in the development and resourcing of the coaching and associated qualifications. With such a high level of expertise, this makes Glenmore Lodge unique in its ability to deliver paddlesport qualifications. Paddlesport qualifications explained With such a variety of qualifications available, it can be a little confusing to work out which qualification is right for you. In offering a range of qualification courses, it is hoped that you can create a coaching or leadership pathway that will meet your needs. At Glenmore Lodge we are committed to supporting you through this process and will help you to work out the coaching or leadership pathway that best suits your needs. The following information should help to clarify which route is right for you but if you are still unsure, please get in touch. The pathway map overleaf shows how each of the awards link together. Leadership Pathway Coaching Pathway If your main focus is to develop your own performance, including being able to get out and paddle in great locations with the intention of progressing on to leading groups, then this is the pathway for you. It starts with the 2 and 3 Star personal performance awards and moves on to the 4 and 5 Star leadership awards (these awards then form some of the pre-requisites for the coaching pathway). Performance awards - 2 and 3 Star: The 2 Star award is a generic award which focuses on the basic paddling skills for canoeing and kayaking. It is also a pre-requisite for the UKCC Level 1 Coaching award. The 3 Star award can be accessed with or without the 2 Star and is discipline specific. A specific safety course is also required prior to progressing on to the assessment for some of the awards. We offer both 4 and 5 Star in White Water, Sea, Canoe and Surf, including the specific safety courses. We also offer 4 Star in Touring. If your main paddling focus is to introduce people to paddling and help develop other s performance, then the coaching pathway is for you. There is training and assessment involved with both and candidates will need to complete an additional safety course for Level 1. Level 1 will be completed in a week and Level 2 will usually take up to a year after completing your training course. After Level 2 you have the choice of progressing down a coaching and/or environment pathway: Coaching Development Pathway - BCU (UKCC) Level 3 Coach award: Focuses on developing the Level 2 holder s ability to be able to coach and develop paddlers over a year long programme in an individualised way that focuses on the learners needs; it is discipline specific and candidates are required to hold their 4 Star Leader award. However, if you still aren t sure, please call us to check. Wi-fi & mobile coverage When Murray Scott chose the location for the current building, he deliberately selected a location that was remote and isolated to reflect the nature of our business. Little did he know that 53 years later mobile phone companies and high speed broadband providers would still agree with his principles. Although there is some mobile coverage, you may have to walk 50m or so from the main building. We have also worked hard to get the best possible wi-fi, but it still may not meet the speeds you are used to. We believe it is a small price to pay for the remoteness and the view, we hope you agree. Television Please note that none of our rooms are equipped with televisions. This is a decision we have made to enable guests to interact with each other more, to enjoy our facilities and our environment, and to reflect the nature and goals of Glenmore Lodge. Please ensure you ve set your favourite shows to record before you arrive! Gift vouchers Looking to buy a present, or give someone the money towards a course? We can create a voucher for a specific course or for any value you wish. Just give us a call and we ll you a voucher, or pop one in the post if you prefer. Bar meals are served from 5pm to 7pm on Mondays & Tuesdays and until 9pm every other day. We have a full children s menu and families and dogs are welcome. Our Facebook page is an excellent place to post information requesting or offering a car share. We ask that you plan to arrive in plenty of time for your course as we won t be able to wait for you. As all of our multi-day courses include accommodation the night before this shouldn t be a problem. By Car - Glenmore Lodge is situated just off the ski road, 7 miles from Aviemore.
