1 DRONGO Orienteering Club presents The 44th Annual Cambridge vs Oxford Orienteering Varsity Match including the DRONGO vs JOK Challenge Trophy FINAL DETAILS
2 Individual, Saturday 25th March 2017 Le rocher Cailleau, domaine des trois pignons, Fontainebleau, France. Parking From the hostel: take D16 North up to the village Le Vaudoué. Turn east on D63. Car park Les Trois pignons located 500m outside of the village. GPS , Toilets Assembly area There will be no toilet facilities at the event or at the car park. The assembly area will be located in the sand area North to the car park, approximately 50 metres walk. There will be a small tent available at assembly to store bags if the weather is bad, but no other facilities. Hire dibbers will be available for collection from this tent. Please keep the path free for members of the public. There will be a warm up area adjacent to assembly. You must not venture outside this area (the boundary will not be marked) as you will enter the competition area. Maps will be provided in assembly, but there will be no controls out in the terrain. Please return your maps when you have finished for others to use.
3 Start Spectator Finish Located on the pathway to the east of the car park (1k). Start times 10:00 10:30 (alumni & non-competitive students) 11:45 11:51 (Varsity Start Block) 12:15 13:00 (alumni & non-competitive students) -3: Call up & whistle check -2: Loose control descriptions available Punching or timed start will be advised on the day. You must visit the start kite (20 m from the start line). There will be no clothing transfer. There will be spectator controls near the assembly area. At assembly. Courses close at 15:30. Download will be in assembly next to the finish. You must report to download, even if you retire. Maps will be collected from early finishers until the last Varsity Match competitor has started. Additionally, alumni should take care when discussing their runs after they have finished so that Varsity Match competitors yet to start are not unscrupulously listening in Punching SI Punching. Controls will be mounted on a stake, with the number displayed both on top of the box and vertically. If a box fails to work, please use the pin punch attached to the stake to mark your map.
4 Terrain Map Typical Fontainebleau area: complex map reading involving boulder areas and contours, as well as runnable and fast forest. Scale 1:10,000, 5m contour interval. The map was drawn in 2009 by M.Cotirta and D.Rosca. Standard IOF symbols, with plain grey representing bare rock. The legend will not be on the map. Course details Cour se Clas s Leng th Clim b Cont rols A MA 9.2k 300 m 21 B WA/ MB 6.1k 210 m 16 C WB/ MC 4.3k 160 m 11 Course 3 is planned to be slightly easier than Courses 1 and 2. Courses are planned according to the Varsity Match Rules.

6 Teams 3 person relay (5.8k /leg). The teams will be decided on Saturday night. These may be mixed-club teams with the aim to make all teams as equal as possible, or it may be club teams to make the relay semicompetitive. The decision will be made in consultation with club captains. All teams must contain at least 1 man and 1 woman. Courses are gaffled. Do not just follow the person in front of you (even if you have had a few controls the same previously) as it is likely that they will be going to a different control. Check your control codes Start Spectator Handover & finish Punching Terrain Map Mass start at 11:00 French Time (note: clocks change this weekend!) Mini-mass starts will be organised as appropriate. There is a spectator control for all legs, approximately 50% of the way round the courses. Handover will be by touch. You must not open your map until after your incoming runner has handed over to you. Anyone seen breaking this rule will be seriously penalised The incoming runner will then proceed to the finish punch. A finish line will be set up in case of a sprint finish competitors should punch the finish in the order they cross this line. Maps will be collected from all finishers until after the last mini-mass start. You must report to the finish even if you retire. SI Punching. Controls will be mounted on a stake, with the number displayed both on top of the box and vertically. 7 map. Results Varsity Match results will be available at the Social. After the event, results (from both the Varsity Match and Relay), Routegadget, Winsplits etc. will be posted on the DrongO website Safety All competitors take part at their own risk. Competitors are reminded that they are taking part in an event abroad and they are invited to check that they are covered by appropriate insurance (travel insurance, sport, etc.). All competitors must carry a whistle. First aid will be available in both assembly areas. Both areas have some boulders that can become slippery when wet. The area is well used by the public, especially dog walkers please be courteous (quick vocab in French: Pardon = sorry, Bonjour = Good morning, Au secours = Help ).

Kitchen & common rooms available during the week (only 2 British travelers being here from 23rd to 26th). Trainings Tourism Social timings on Sat 25th Trainings have been planned for each day from Tuesday to Friday. Clubs have kindly accepted to take part in this organisation, we hope that you will enjoy discovering the forest. All days will have trainings in the morning and in the afternoon (but they aren t compulsory, so that you can save your legs & brain for VM!). On Wednesday afternoon, you are invited to join local clubs for a training in another part of the forest. If you have any questions, please refer to the club captain in charge of the day Tuesday: OUOC (Jamie Parkinson and Jegor Kostylev) Wednesday: DrongO (Ben Windsor) Thursday: CUOC (Morning: Paul Pruzina, Afternoon: Jonathan Mortlock) Friday: DrongO (Matthew Vokes) or varsity@drongo.org.uk Paris is 50k away. If you want to go sightseeing, it is suggested to drive to the station (Fontainebleau Avon) and then take a train to Gare de Lyon (off peak 8.85 one way). Parking fees can be fairly expensive in Paris. What to see in Paris: Eiffel Tower (totally worth it) Louvres museum (always fairly crowded, especially near the Joconde) Musée d Orsay (slightly quieter - specialised in Impressionism painting) Jardin des Tuileries Montmartre (setting of Paris City Race May 2017, just saying) Champs Elysees not really recommended (busy & nothing to see apart from shops like on Oxford Street in London) Boat race: 6pm Pre drinks: 6:30pm
