Witness it cracking ice-floes in the Weddell Sea, slicing shimmering reflections in the Lemaire Channel or standing proud as mother ship welcoming back Zodiacs and kayaks from yet another adventure. Ice-strengthened, 71.6 metres long and capable of carrying 54 passengers, Polar Pioneer offers simple, yet comfortable accommodation. All cabins have outside portholes, ample storage and individual heating. Yet what sets it apart from other vessels is its size. Over the past 25 years, we ve introduced most ship-based activities to the polar regions. Not only are they a natural extension of our drive to explore, but they are fantastically exciting. Antarctic mountaineering, scuba diving, snorkelling, camping and kayaking take you to places few others will ever experience. Our qualified guides brief you properly before setting out, check your equipment and lead you with care. Some activities like scuba diving require significant previous experience, while others, like photography, camping and snorkelling, can be enjoyed by novices. Whether a beginner or experienced, you ll find our workshops and one-on-one tuition help capture that perfect moment. Surcharge may apply. k CAMPING Camping out in Antarctica is proof positive of a true explorer! We Zodiac ashore after dinner, lay out our sleeping mats and bags, often to a penguin serenade or whale-blow, and return at sunrise, just in time for a delicious hot breakfast. SEA KAYAKING l Be mesmerised by porpoising penguins, iridescent blue icebergs, the blow of whales and the alien melody of leopard seals. Paddle alongside experienced guides up to twice a day, and return to the ship radiant and wearing a secret smile. Some paddling experience is required and a surcharge applies. CLIMBING Stand atop an Antarctic summit for views few others have experienced. Our internationally-qualified climbing guides plan to make at least two, one-day alpine ascents (weather dependant) as well as some ice-climbing. 8 HOWARD WHELAN EXPEDITION LEADER Journalist and photographer, Howard has explored many of the world s most remote regions, but has a special bond with Antarctica. Founding editor of Australian Geographic, he went on to handle special projects like Academy-award winning Happy Feet, logistics for the Shackleton Epic and curating the Australian Museum s exhibition, TrailBlazers: Australia s 50 Greatest Explorers. ROBYN MUNDY ASSISTANT EXPEDITION LEADER Robyn has visited polar regions almost every year since She was a field assistant for the Australian Antarctic Division at Davis Station, researching skuas, and over-wintered at Mawson Station, working with emperor penguins. Robyn has a PhD in Writing and The Nature of Ice is her first novel. When you travel with Robyn you'll discover her willingness to share her enthusiasm and awe of the 'colder climes'. HEIDI KRAJEWSKY NATURALIST Heidi began as a Sea Cadet in her native Canada, graduated in marine biology from the University of Victoria, British Columbia and sailed the world operating research vessels and interpreting wildlife. She is director of the Marine and Education Research Society, has set up photo ID catalogues of minke whales and her passion for the environment has fast made her a favourite on our polar expeditions. AL BAKKER SEA KAYAKING GUIDE Dedicating his life to the open waters, Al has been paddling the world for the past four decades. He has led small groups of kayakers through the icy waters of Antarctica for the last 20 years, and continues to be drawn South year after year.
