1 ANTARCTICA

2 Dear Expeditioners, For more than two decades, many old friends and new have joined us to explore the wildest, most pristine places on Earth. South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula alone account for 200 voyages. That s more than 10,000 travellers we ve been responsible for introducing to these majestic destinations. While the success is gratifying, with it comes a deep responsibility to protect what makes these places so special. From our very first expeditions, we ve tried to minimise our impact. We ve helped create environmental guidelines that are now adopted as the industry standard. We ve participated in clean-up campaigns, kept our group sizes small and most of all, highlighted issues that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. We continue to partner with key organisations such as BirdLife Australia, the Australian Geographic Society and RiAus Australia s national science hub. Each brings a passion for conservation and education in their respective fields, allowing us to offer our passengers a unique insight and learning experience. Finally, I hope that all of you who travel with us will be inspired to participate in some way, to reset the balance between humans and nature. Only by doing so can we help to sustain life on this fragile, remarkable planet that all creatures, great and small, call home. 3 THE BEST OF ANTARCTICA & SOUTH GEORGIA From South America, it takes less than two days sailing, or two hours flying, to enter a world that fills the heart, overloads the senses and imprints your memory forever. The Antarctic Peninsula s west coast offers ice-clad peaks towering over a maze of protected channels; the east coast a vast icecap and strange, fossil-rich islands. From spring to fall, this stunning landscape becomes furious with life as penguins, seals, petrels, and whales arrive to feed and breed. Sail the Scotia Arc, from Elephant Island to South Georgia, to discover a wildlife oasis like no other. Visit historic huts, whaling sites, scientific bases and set foot on the Antarctic continent. Enjoy magical Zodiac trips among sculpted icebergs, thrill to unexpected encounters with leopard seals and whales. Across our Antarctic program, we offer the option to camp, kayak, climb, scuba dive, snorkel, improve your photography or simply enjoy being amongst the most accepting wildlife on Earth. In we have a series of specially themed voyages to capture and focus in on your specific interests. Our first voyage of the season, 'Photographer s First Light', welcomes polar photographer Joshua Holko for exclusive photography workshops. On the same departure, birding enthusiasts will enjoy a special guest lecturer from BirdLife Australia, our partner in bird conservation. For those with an interest in our changing world, discover the impact of climate change is having on our planet with the team from RiAus on our 'Weddell Sea Explorer' expedition, and we wrap up our Shackleton Centenary Celebrations in March 2017 with a joint voyage hosted by the Australian Geographic Society. Whether you attempt to sail south of the Antarctic Circle, be awed by tabular icebergs in the Weddell Sea or follow in the wake of Shackleton and his men, Antarctica and South Georgia offer the best of adventures and wildlife encounters. 4 WHY TRAVEL WITH US? From the start, Aurora Expeditions was destined to be different. Co-founders Greg and Margaret Mortimer had a passion for adventure, exploring wild places and sharing the experience with friends. More than two decades later, that pioneering spirit burns just as brightly, as does our preference for small-group, personal expeditions. For us, expedition cruising means choosing the right ship for the destination, staffing it with keen experts, then using every spare moment to explore. The atmosphere on board our ice-strengthen expedition ship, Polar Pioneer, is welcoming and informal. Whether staff or passenger, we re all expeditioners, sharing a love of wilderness, culture, incredible plants, animals and adventure. Because we often travel where few others go, our daily schedule is subject to natural forces, be they tides, ice, wind and swell. We aim for two to three excursions each day, hopping into Zodiacs for landings or cruises. Most of our trips offer optional adventures, from sea kayaking to mountaineering, scuba diving to snorkelling. Flexibility is the key to a successful and fulfilling voyage. Whether you re joining us for the first time or returning for another thrilling adventure, our original goals remain unchanged. Explore wild places that stir the soul, offer personal attention on unforgettable expeditions and welcome new friends into our Aurora Expeditions family. SMALL SHIP, SMALL GROUPS Dwarfed by larger ships, our vessel Polar Pioneer is small enough to go where others can t. We carry a maximum of 54 passengers and delight in the camaraderie of small group adventures. Less people often means more time to explore! OUR STYLE At Aurora Expeditions, the spirit of adventure and exploration is as strong as ever. We re dedicated to maintaining the values that we established all those years ago: an easy-going, informative style teamed with a personal approach that warmly welcomes you into the Aurora Expeditions family. AN EXPERT TEAM We believe our team is the best in the business! With years of experience, they share their knowledge and passion for Antarctica, and ensure your security, wellbeing and understanding of the places we visit are their priorities. Meet some of them on page 10. OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES Adventure is in our DNA. Whether you re keen to paddle sea kayaks, climb up the face of an iceberg, scuba dive or polar snorkel with penguins and seals, follow Shackleton s tracks across South Georgia, camp out overnight or capture it all digitally, we have an activity for you (see pages 8-9). 4 Images: (clockwise from top left) Our trusty Polar Pioneer Alexander Duncan; Our friendly team help you make the most of Antarctica Michael Baynes; Paddling the Peninsula's maze of ice Jennifer Prerau; Getting out amongst it is our style Andrew Halsall.

5 EDUCATION & LEARNING As you travel with us, our team help you to develop a deeper understanding of the natural forces shaping our world. By creating lifelong environmental ambassadors, we aim to preserve these wild places for future generations. FLEXIBLE ITINERARIES Each and every expedition is different and unique. Each itinerary is designed to be flexible in case tides, ice and weather dictate a schedule change. It also provides time to explore if we discover a new landing site, or stop for impromptu wildlife displays. EXTRA INCLUSIONS Whether it s a stylish polar jacket and expedition photo book to keep, gumboots to wear, a complimentary ship tracking system or included flights on our Fly/Sail expeditions, our inclusions are what most others would consider extras. FLY TO ANTARCTICA While many of our expeditioners love logging sea time (great birdwatching, relaxing, the Southern Ocean in all her moods), others do not. If you are the latter, our Fly/Sail trips could be for you. Eight of our Antarctic voyages reduce sea time by including one travelleg by air rather than sea. Check itineraries for the icon. ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP From day one we have always been committed to environmentally responsible practices. Founding Australian members of the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators we support research, donate funds, and allocate resources to ensure we leave places we visit as we found them. OWNED AND OPERATED We operate our own expeditions, on our own vessel, with all of our voyage operations managed by our expert team from our offices in Sydney and Buenos Aires. We have complete control of the expeditions we deliver and are continuously refining to ensure you have the best experience imaginable! 7 A DAY ON AN EXPEDITION Good morning, good people. An expedition leader s dulcet tones entice you from sleep with a few words on the night s progress, the day s weather and possibly what the 'dawn patrol', the early risers, have seen from the spacious viewing platforms. On sailing days, morning passes quickly with environmental and Zodiac landing briefings, prep sessions for our scuba divers, snorkellers, climbers or kayakers, or an illuminating lecture by our naturalists, historians or polar specialists. In between there s time to relax or be mesmerised by nature s passing show. If at a destination, we don appropriate clothing and set off in Zodiacs or kayaks for a two to three-hour landing, cruise or paddle. We return to the ship for a delicious lunch, and sometimes, but not always, a quick nap if time allows, before setting off again on our next exciting adventure. By Happy Hour, the bar buzzes with excitement as stories and photos are swapped, then dinner and an evening film or talk. Unless, of course, there s something exciting to see or do. It might be watching a pod of orcas rising nearby, another landing or a glorious Zodiac cruise beneath the midnight sun. We let you explore at your own pace Andrew Halsall DAILY EXCURSIONS & LANDINGS Each day offers multiple adventures! Hike up a snow slope, photograph the wildlife, tour a scientific station or meander the coastline at your own pace; we encourage you to enjoy Antarctica in your own way, within the bounds of safety. Our chefs prepare wholesome, tasty meals Michael Baynes PROFESSIONAL CHEFS & DELICIOUS MEALS Our professional chefs present three healthy, delicious meals daily, with snacks, tea and coffee available around the clock. Our expert team are happy to cater for a range of dietary requirements, simply note when booking. The perfect platform for up-close encounters Pip Smith CRUISING IN A ZODIAC Our fleet of small nimble expedition crafts allow us to land ashore, cruise past giant icebergs and glaciers, and get up close to wildlife. Carrying just 12 guests, each Zodiac is driven by a skilled and experienced driver to ensure your enjoyment and safety. Mulled wine and canapés on the deck anyone? Andrew Halsall CELEBRATING IN ANTARCTICA Whether it be enjoying a welcome drink with the captain, a 'Crossing the Circle' ceremony or an impromptu BBQ on the deck, we enjoy getting to know our fellow expeditioners and celebrating our time in Antarctica! 7

8 YOU KNOW YOU ARE HAVING AN ADVENTURE WHEN... A humpback blows close by; you stand on your first Antarctic summit; a leopard seal opens its jaws to your underwater camera; a penguin hops over your sleeping bag; you toast a successful Shackleton Crossing at 'The Boss s' grave; your kayak glides past towering icebergs and you can t wait to download your photos or video to relive that once-in-a-lifetime experience. Since introducing ship-based adventure activities to Antarctica, including mountaineering, scuba diving, camping and kayaking, Aurora Expeditions' spirit of adventure burns as brightly today as when it was kindled by Aurora Expeditions founders more than two decades ago. All of our expeditions offer an adventure element, like bird watching, wildlife encounters, shore walks, visiting historic sites and scientific stations. We Zodiac-cruise amongst icebergs, and past giant glaciers. But for those with a passion for a specific type of adventure, we offer the following: 8

9 PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS On all our expeditions, you ll meet experienced photographers amongst our expedition team, keen to help you capture memorable images. But our special 'Photographer's First Light' expedition with polar photography expert Antony Watson, is timed to capture the early season pristine landscapes and the spectacular light as the sun rises and sets. This voyage will offer all levels of photographers the opportunity to learn new skills via a dedicated photography program. MOUNTAINEERING Along the Antarctic Peninsula coast, hundreds of peaks rise several thousand feet, snow-clad and beckoning. Our 'Spirit of Antarctica' voyage (page 16) offers climbs for the moderately fit, from easy ascents to more technical routes, ranging from 4 to 10 hours. We hope to make at least two one-day alpine ascents and attempt some iceberg climbing. Previous experience with crampons and ice axe is necessary and an activity surcharge does apply. SEA KAYAKING The experience of sea kayaking in the humbling wilderness of Antarctica is guaranteed to stir your soul. Paddlers delight in exploring the fascinating, wildlife-rich waterways of South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. Our silently gliding crafts transport us through a variety of icescapes, often arousing the curiosity of penguins, seals and even whales. This is a dedicated kayaking experience, aiming for two outings per day. We supply kayaks and dry suits; you need intermediate sea kayaking experience. SHACKLETON WALK & CROSSING On each South Georgia voyage fit expeditioners have the chance to walk the last leg of Shackleton's remarkable journey, from Fortuna Bay to Stromness. For those looking to attempt his entire epic crossing from King Haakon Bay to Stromness, the hike varies from 35 to 50 kms depending on crevasse conditions and takes up to three days. Alpine climbing experience is essential and a surcharge applies. Both activities are heavily weather dependent. CAMPING There s no better way to experience Antarctica s stunning silence (barring the odd raucous penguin) than from a sleeping bag on the ice. For some, it will be the first time you ve ever slept out. Camping is available on selected Antarctic voyages check for the icon on the itinerary pages. It s complimentary, organised on board and dependent on weather and the expedition schedule. We provide all the equipment you need. DIVING & SNORKELLING Shimmering ice walls, penguins, leopard seals and shipwrecks await you on our two 'Across the Antarctic Circle' expeditions (page 24). All underwater programs are operated by our diving partners Waterproof Expeditions, the only company dedicated to polar diving and snorkelling. 9

After crossing the Drake Passage, we arrive on the Antarctic Peninsula as the breeding cycle reaches its peak. Chicks become juveniles, parents shuttle fish ashore and seal pups thrill with mock charges. Long days are filled with humpback and minke whale sightings, penguins and leopard seals, historic sites and scientific stations. We visit Elephant Island and retrace Shackleton s boat voyage to South Georgia, home to millions of furs seals and penguins, elephant seals and nesting albatross. We walk in Shackleton s footsteps.

21 Day 1 Embark in Ushuaia in the late afternoon to a warm welcome, before we set sail along the Beagle Channel. Days 2-3 Drake Passage offers excellent bird watching (petrels, prions, albatross) from the outer decks. Our expedition team presents Zodiac and environmental briefings, and enlightening talks on Antarctica. Keen eyes watch for icebergs, penguins, seals and cormorants as we approach our first landing in the South Shetland Islands. Days 4-7 Awaken to the thrill of Antarctica, where we plan to visit busy penguin rookeries, historic sites and make a continental landing. The Antarctic Peninsula s west coast is ours to explore. We rely on our experienced expedition staff, many who ve been here over dozens of summers, to create the best daily itinerary that prevailing weather and ice conditions allow. A sense of excitement abounds as we use every moment of daylight hours to enjoy the best that Antarctica has to offer. This could mean two to three excursions in a day, whether it be to penguin colonies, historic huts, a working scientific station or a Zodiac cruise through a sculpture garden of grounded icebergs. Day 8 Elephant Island, where Shackleton s men wintered over beneath their upturned boats. If weather and seas permit, Zodiacs will carry us close to Point Wild to pay tribute to these hardy souls. Days 9-10 We follow in Shackleton s wake across the Scotia Sea, watching for great whales and big icebergs riding up from the Weddell Sea. It s a great time to relax and reflect on what we ve accomplished so far. Days With ample time to explore South Georgia s spectacular north coast, we visit the world s largest king penguin rookeries, the nesting grounds of majestic wandering albatross and if weather allows, follow Shackleton s route from Fortuna Bay to Stromness. Kayakers revel in paddling waters alive with king penguins and playful seals. Against a backdrop of 3000-metre peaks, photograph basking elephant seals, feisty fur seals and penguins cluttering kelp-strewn beaches. Days We cross the Scotia Sea, a time to share photos and memories, and watch out for lively dolphins. Day 18 Dawn greets us in the Falkland Islands capital, Stanley; where we bid farewell to our fellow expeditioners. You can either spend more time exploring the Falkland Islands or continue on to Punta Arenas or Santiago, Chile. 28 CELEBRATE THE CENTENARY OF SHACKLETON S GREATEST EPIC When Ernest Shackleton set off from South Georgia in December 1914, his goal was to lead the first expedition to cross Antarctica. Instead, his ship Endurance was beset in Weddell Sea pack ice and, nine-months later, crushed. Only Shackleton s phenomenal leadership and the skills of men like Frank Worsely, Frank Wild and Tom Crean saved all 28 men. ENDURANCE EXPEDITION SHACKLETON 100 Years Over the Antarctic summers, we celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Shackleton s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition on nine historic voyages. A special program of onboard events includes an exhibit of Frank Hurley s Antarctic images, a commemorative dinner, readings from Shackleton s journal and tributes to other fascinating Antarctic explorers. Best of all we plan visits to key historic sites (weather and ice permitting), including remote Elephant Island. We ll even have the chance to re-enact the final leg of Shackleton s epic trek from Fortuna Bay to Stromness whaling station, then toast 'The Boss' and Frank Wild beside their graves in Grytviken cemetery. Each voyage will be different, due to travel direction, time of season and activities. Please check the list of following highlights, and specific trip itineraries on their respective pages. Expeditioners on all our Shackleton voyages receive a special commemorative patch and a customised all-weather jacket when they arrive on board. After the trip, a special hard-cover, full-colour voyage journal will be sent as a memento of our historical adventure. 28 'Blizz' lines lead back to Endurance. Ernest Shackleton. James Caird leaving Elephant Island. All images; Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales.

29 SPECIAL COMMEMORATIVE ACTIVITIES Frank Hurley Antarctic Photography Exhibit Between November 2014 and March 2017, Antarctic images by renowned Australian photographer, Frank Hurley, will be displayed on Polar Pioneer. Aurora Expeditions and the State Library of NSW are proud hosts of this extraordinary 'floating exhibition' from ghostly images of a trapped Endurance, to captured emotions of men willing themselves to survive. Shackleton Graveside Memorial Just four years after rescuing his men from Elephant Island, Shackleton returned to South Georgia as leader of an Antarctic scientific expedition. On 5 January 1922, before the expedition could continue south, Shackleton died of a heart attack on board Quest. At his wife s request, he was buried in Grytviken cemetery (pictured right). In 2011, Frank Wild was laid to rest next to Shackleton. During a moving ceremony, our historian requests that we raise a 'wee dram' and toast 'The Boss' and his right-hand man. South Georgia Museum Guided Tour The creation of the South Georgia Museum began in 1991, in the building that was once the Grytviken whaling station manager s house. A year later, Tim and Pauline Carr arrived in their tiny yacht Curlew, and took over the work that today is a treasure. We take a guided tour of this extraordinary display of island history, including whaling, wildlife, exploration and military occupation. Don t miss the James Caird replica in the Carr Gallery. In Shackleton s Footsteps (Fortuna Bay to Stromness) As Shackleton, Worsely and Crean made their way along the head of Fortuna Bay, they heard the whistles from Stromness whaling station and knew they were going to survive. On all our South Georgia trips, weather permitting, we follow their route from Fortuna Bay, up past Crean Lake, over a 300m pass (pictured below) and descend to Stromness. This spectacular half-day, guided walk is for the keen, fit and agile. Shackleton Crossing (experienced mountaineers only) In May 1916, Shackleton, Worsely and Crean set off from King Haakon Bay to cross South Georgia, reaching Stromness in 36 hours. We retrace their steps over three days, weather permitting. Each member carries personal clothing, sleeping and climbing gear, food, fuel and tents. Experience in crevassed alpine terrain is essential. Example Alpine Crossing Itinerary Day 1 Ascend to Murray Snowfield, traverse up and over Trident Pass. Descend to Crean Camp. Day 2 Pre-dawn start. Ascend Crean Glacier to Great Nunatak. Cross Fortuna Glacier and descend to Fortuna Bay. Overnight on ship. Day 3 Walk Fortuna Bay to Stromness, accompanied by fit passengers. Sail to Grytviken and Shackleton s grave. Please note: Itinerary will change due to departure time, weather and ice conditions. Special Onboard Centenary Celebrations Immerse yourself in the centenary of Shackleton s Endurance Expedition with special readings from 'The Boss s' journal by our historian, a whisky toast on the ship s bow, a lively, expedition-style dinner and a tribute to other Antarctic explorers. Visit Key Historical Sites We hope to visit the very places that Shackleton and his men spent time a century ago. On all our Shackleton voyages and depending on weather, we hope to visit Point Wild on Elephant Island, follow his trekking route from Fortuna Bay to Stromness, and visit Grytviken, where Shackleton and Wild are buried. Our voyage 'In Shackleton s Footsteps' also includes a visit to King Haakon Bay, into which Worsely guided James Caird, landing first in Cave Cove and finally at Peggotty Bluff. 31 Day 1 Step aboard Polar Pioneer in the late afternoon to a warm welcome, introductory briefing and an evening departure along the Beagle Channel with your shipmates. Days 2-3 As we cross Drake Passage, we keep watch for giant petrels, wandering and black-browed albatross. Our onboard historian introduces us to Shackleton, while expedition staff prepare us for our first landing in the South Shetland Islands. Days 4-6 An autumn dawn greets us in spectacular Antarctic Sound where we may make a continental landing at towering Brown Bluff before pushing on into the Weddell Sea. Amidst shifting pack ice and tabular icebergs the Endurance story comes alive. If ice conditions allow, we visit world-renowned fossil beds on Seymour, Vega or James Ross islands, perhaps even Nordenskjold s Hut on Snow Hill Island and learn of a survival story nearly equal to Shackleton s. Days 7-9 Point Wild on Elephant Island is so exposed it s hard to imagine Shackleton s men landing three lifeboats there, let alone surviving four dark winter months before rescue. If conditions allow we hope to take our Zodiacs as close as possible, perhaps even stepping ashore. Retracing James Caird s epic voyage to South Georgia, we watch for great whales like the fin, sei and blue. Day 10 Entering King Haakon Bay, if conditions allow we land in tiny Cave Cove to fully appreciate the skills of Worsely, Shackleton s skipper and navigator, then continue to near Peggotty Bluff, where Shackleton, Worsely and Crean set off to cross the island. Days While our 'Crossers' negotiate the rugged interior, we delight in one of the world s greatest wildlife spectacles king penguin rookeries half-million strong, chinstrap, gentoo and macaroni penguin colonies, wandering albatross on nests, beaches thick with elephant and fur seals. We hope to join our mountaineers on the final leg of the Shackleton Crossing, from Fortuna Bay to Stromness, before visiting 'The Boss s' grave and the whaling museum in Grytviken. Days We re entertained by whales, dolphins and seabirds as we cross the Scotia Sea to the Falkland Islands. Prevailing weather from the west makes it difficult to estimate our arrival time. Day 18 Dawn greets us in the Falkland Islands capital, Stanley; where we bid farewell to fellow expeditioners. You have the option of either spending more time exploring the Falkland Islands or continuing on to Punta Arenas or Santiago, Chile. Sea Kayaking Rare chance to paddle both Weddell Sea and South Georgia on this incredible voyage. For experienced kayakers only. A surcharge applies (drysuit included). 33 Day 1 Flight from Santiago (or Punta Arenas) to Stanley and embark on the Polar Pioneer Day 2 Falkland islands. Steeple Jason Island is a rarely visited jewel and the most remote of all West Falklands islands. It rises sharply from the sea and is one of the most dramatic islands on the archipelago. Its remoteness and rugged coast make it difficult to visit but it is home to the world s largest black-browed albatross colony and the area has significant importance to conservationists. Its rare beauty and its huge albatross colony make it an important goal for us. We will do our best to visit Steeple Jason, but if conditions are too harsh, we have other exciting islands to choose from. Days 3-4 Sailing towards South Georgia gives us time to catch our breath and slow to the rhythm of the sea. Between the Falkland Islands and South Georgia we will prepare you for your expedition with a schedule of informative talks on wildlife and history. There will be plenty of time to simply relax and be entranced by the many seabirds we ll encounter on our way. Days 5-12 Before our first landing you will be given guidelines for our behaviour around the wildlife and talk about the implications of the Antarctic Treaty. Importantly, we will take care of our biosecurity procedures to ensure that South Georgia remains protected from introduced organisms and as pristine as possible. South Georgia is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The island is just a speck in the vastness of the South Atlantic Ocean, one of the most remote parts of our planet. A 3,000-metre mountain range forms the spine of this long, narrow island. Between the mountains, shattered glaciers carve their way through tussock grass to the deeply indented coastline. Geographically speaking, the island lies in the subantarctic, as do Macquarie Island and Heard Island, but it lies wholly within the Antarctic Convergence so it has a climate more in keeping with Antarctica. Despite being such a small outpost in the vastness of the south Atlantic, the sea around South Georgia is one of the most productive areas on Earth. The abundant marine life supports millions of seals, whales, penguins and other seabirds. Day We begin cruising back toward the Falkland Islands and our departure. 34 34 EXPEDITION GATEWAYS USHUAIA, ARGENTINA Argentina s 'Gateway to Antarctica' is a bustling, upmarket, Beagle Channel port, nestled amongst spectacular mountains. We embark or disembark here for most of our Antarctic and South Georgia voyages. The easiest way to reach Ushuaia is via daily flights from, or to, Buenos Aires. SANTIAGO, CHILE Many international airlines fly directly into Santiago, Chile s capital, and largest city, which sprawls across a flat plain, surrounded on all sides by magnificent mountains. Expeditioners who start or finish their South Georgia and Antarctica voyage in Stanley, Falkland Islands/Malvinas, fly from or to Santiago on an included flight, with an opportunity to break the flight in Punta Arenas PUNTA ARENAS, CHILE Tucked into the Strait of Magellan s north coast, Punta Arenas has long been known as a gateway to Patagonia. Easily reached by a 3.5-hour flight from Santiago, it has become our hub for flights connecting to our Antarctic and South Georgia voyages. Flights to, or from, King George Island spend a night here, while trips leaving from, or returning to, both Puerto Williams and Stanley include the Punta Arenas flight sector. BOARDING THE SHIP Many of our expeditions include a flight to reach the ship's departure port, or a return flight on disembarkation. From Santiago you'll fly into Stanley in the Falkland Islands/Malvinas, where you'll enjoy a town tour before boarding the ship. In Punta Arenas, depending on your itinerary, you'll either fly to Puerto Williams or directly into King George Island, Antarctica to board Polar Pioneer. Patagonia Discovery Trek 10 DAYS GROUP SIZE: 4-14 SAVE UP TO 20% Explore Patagonia's ice-tipped granite spires, temperate rainforests and glacier fronts on our very own discovery trek! Enjoy the best of Patagonia by day and a warm, dry bed at night. Argentina offers the Perito Moreno Glacier, towering Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy, while in Chile we cruise from Puerto Natales into Torres del Paine National Park. Our private vehicles drive us between each of our trekking points and our naturalist escorts throughout. Days 1-2 Arrive in El Calafate, gateway to Los Glaciares National Park, home of the Perito Moreno Glacier. Afternoon at leisure to explore the town or visit Reserva Natural Laguna Nimes to spot waterbirds along Lake Argentino, before meeting our guide for trip briefing. Next day, we depart early to visit the breathtaking Perito Moreno Glacier, hopefully to watch its explosive ice calving, and later, drive across the arid Patagonian steppes to lively El Chaltén in the heart of the park. Days 3-4 Crystal clear streams, beech forests in bloom, native orchids and birdsong guide us as we make day walks up to the climbers base camps of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. Enjoy dramatic rock spires piercing the Patagonian icecap, while Andean condors and eagles soar above. To the south, massive glaciers demarcate the border between Argentina and Chile. Days 5-6 Drive across the pampas to Puerto Natales on the shores of Seno Última Esperanza, renowned for its king crab. This scenic city is the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park. Sleep well, then board a boat sailing to the Balmaceda Glacier, then switching to Zodiacs for a glorious trip amongst spectacular scenery, along the Serrano River to Torres del Paine. Images: Alpine glow paints Mt Fitz Roy at dawn; Grazing guanacos on the pampas. Days 7-8 Iceberg-strewn, pale blue glacial lakes, breathtaking pale granite slabs and 'Towers of Paine'. Our first day combines bus travel and short walk, while on the next, walks are calibrated to the group s fitness, with many of the park s highlights requiring a 6-7 hour, round trip walk, well worth the effort. As with any trek, the fitter you are, the more you ll enjoy it. Days 9-10 We drive along the Patagonian steppes, enjoying and photographing great rolling hills, stunted beech trees and gauchos grazing their sheep against a backdrop of the spectacular Andean peaks. We arrive at either Calafate or Punta Arenas in the afternoon, with plenty of time for last minute shopping or indulging in one more dulce de leche dessert. On our final day, carry on with your own travel arrangements or, for the ultimate adventure, join one of our exciting Antarctic voyages.
