This is one of Rose s favourites from her March 2015 trip, taken on an afternoon Zodiac ride at Neko Harbour. 4 GETTING THERE... TO SOUTH AMERICA LAN flies from Sydney to Santiago daily, via Auckland and QANTAS nonstop from 4 times a week. All voyages leave from the bottom of South America and visit the Antarctic Peninsula which stretches further north than elsewhere on the continent. This area is teeming with wildlife due to the warmer temperatures, and is much quicker to reach. Classic expeditions depart from Ushuaia in southern Argentina, taking under two days to reach Antarctica by ship across the fabled Drake Passage. We now offer several new expeditions that fly from Punta Arenas to Antarctica, then cruise to the Falkland Islands where you fly back to Punta Arenas in just 90 minutes. Some trips do this in reverse. There are options to spend a week before or after the cruise exploring the wildlife-rich Falkland Islands. We recommend having at least a few days in South America before your cruise so your body clock is adjusted and you have recovered from any jet lag. You are more likely to be affected by the ocean swell if you cruise straight away. ROSE SAYS: I like the tradition and history of the expeditions crossing the Drake Passage, and the anticipation of whether it will be lake or a shake? Being on deck watching the seabirds soar and whales drift by sets the scene as you push south. Seeing icebergs appear raises anticipation and the excitement reaching Antarctica really gets the heart beating. DAVID SAYS: Rose doesn t get seasick, I do. I d fly so I can get amongst it straight away and not risk a bumpy Drake. I think having extra time and the possibility to see other places is great, and I d add a week in The Falkland Islands after the cruise to explore the amazing wildlife haven. TRAVEL IN SOUTH AMERICA A trip to Antarctica is a fabulous excuse to see some of South America. We have included some trips in Chile and Argentina, featuring fabulous Patagonia on pages as a sample. Ask for our South America brochure for more ideas. TO USHUAIA for Classic Antarctica Expeditons Fly to Ushuaia from Buenos Aires, or El Calafate, in southern Patagonia. From Australia you need at least 2 nights before you cruise and another afterwards due to flights schedules. From Punta Arenas you can take a 12hr bus, or a luxurious 4 day Australis cruise through remote Patagonia. Or a 26 day Viva safari from Santiago to Ushuaia through remote parts of Patagonia; Ask Rose all about it as she has done it! TO PUNTA ARENAS for Fly/Cruise Expeditions 3.5hrs flying time south of Santiago, you can reach Punta on the same day leaving from Sydney or Melbourne. You could break the journey in Santiago or in the Lakes district. We d suggest allowing time to visit the beautiful Torres del Paine NP, a few hours north of Punta Arenas. It is spectacular, and has some fabulous lodges to either indulge in luxury or use a base for trekking. See pages for some ideas. THE FORWARD MENU We think planning travel is just like cooking. 5 THE FORWARD GUIDE: WHAT WILDLIFE WILL YOU SEE? WHAT IS WHERE? AND WHERE IS WHAT? Antarctica is a big place and expeditions visit different parts of it and the wildlife varies in each location. This is not a trip to the zoo, and wildlife viewing can be unpredictable. Your expedition team has so much experience and knowledge though, that they know where the wildlife is likely to be. This is our guide to help you figure out where you want to go, and what you will likely see there. SOUTH GEORGIA ANTARCTIC PENINSULA The Antarctic Peninsula is mainland Antarctica, so unless you come here and set foot upon it, you have not truly been to Antarctica. Luckily all our Antarctic Expeditions visit it. It is a serenely beautiful place which makes you feel like a visitor into another world. From the moment you first cast your eyes on the seemingly meringue covered mountain peaks you will be enchanted. Once you reach its calm waters you ll realise the show never stops, and you have a front row seat. Incredible icebergs, massive glaciers and rugged snow covered mountains add to the magic. Curious penguins waddle by and fearless whales and seals pop up to check us out while in the zodiacs. Stunningly beautiful and isolated, this wildlife sanctuary, once visited, is not easily forgotten. Its snow covered peaks, blue glacial ice and emerald green bays, are breathtaking sights. 170km long with peaks up to 2,934m, glaciers cover more than half the island. Central to the whaling industry until the mid1960 s and known for its eternal connection to Sir Ernest Shackleton who lies at rest here, its history is as interesting as its wildlife is abundant. St. Andrew s Bay and Salisbury plain are greeted with disbelief at the sight of hundreds of thousands of king penguins filling every available inch of space, and vast quantities of elephant and fur seals occupying the sands along the water. The sights, sounds, and smells will not be forgotten soon. Visited by only a lucky few people each year, this is a very special place. THE FALKLAND ISLANDS THE WEDDELL SEA The rarely visited and ice-choked Weddell Sea is a beautiful region filled with gigantic tabular icebergs. This area is home to Adelie penguin rookeries of staggering size and is the realm of the emperor penguin, the largest of the penguins. It was here that Shackleton and his men drifted north on the ice after their ship was lost in the ice months earlier. Navigating through the heavily iced water always causes people to pause and consider the bravery and/or foolhardiness of those early explorers who travelled these waters a hundred years before us. The abundance and accessibility of the wildlife in the Falklands is staggering, rightly earning the islands the nickname Galapagos of the South. King penguins share the white sand beaches with many other penguins, including gentoos, rockhoppers, and magellanics. Large albatross colonies, and other marine bird species are just some of the highlights. Enter one of Stanley s pubs and be instantly transported to rural Britain, with décor, atmosphere, warm beer, and accents of a place far away. If your interests include wildlife, wilderness, walking, or war history, the Falklands is the place for you. PATAGONIA If you aren t planning to visit Patagonia in conjunction with Antarctica, you should be. Straddling the Southern Andes of Chile and Argentina, this place is truly jaw dropping! Northern Patagonia is home to forests, lakes, volcanoes and endearing villages with fine chocolates to tempt you. The south gives you rugged wilderness including Torres del Paine, perhaps South America s greatest National Park, and the breathtaking performance that is Perito Moreno glacier. Conveniently, at the very bottom you find Ushuaia and Punta Arenas. If you like the outdoors and inspirational landscapes then you need to put Patagonia on your menu. EXPEDITION SEA KAYAKING The only activity that needs to be booked is kayaking, at USD795 per person. This is for the whole cruise and we expect to have between 4-7 chances to paddle on each trip. Each trip has 16 kayaking places so book early if you are really keen. The kayakers will have excursions away from the other passengers so they are able to glide quietly without engine noise, allowing a most memorable and emotional thrill. ADVENTURE CONCIERGES Once you board the ship, you leave the every day behind and emerge into the extraordinary. Once we arrive at a destination, we aim to have at least two Zodiac excursions each day, some may be cruising around enjoying the playful wildlife or exploring glaciers and icebergs up close. Some will be shore landings where you can go on short or long walks with your expert leaders, and we will have many visits to penguin rookeries to admire and smile as these curious birds waddle by. CAMPING IN ANTARCTICA (INCLUDED) We will try to camp ashore for a night on most trips and it is included in the price. There are enough tents and bivvy bags for everyone so you don t need to book it in advance, simply decide on the day. Enjoy twice daily excursions with the best naturalist guides, historians and adventurers. The heavily glaciated Antarctic Peninsula is mountainous and features a staggering abundance of wildlife, as well as fascinating historic sites and scientific bases. This voyage offers the complete Antarctic experience. DAY 1. Met upon arrival in Ushuaia. Transfer to hotel. DAY 2. Awake this morning and cast your eyes to the pier where your ship is waiting for you. Explore town or perhaps stretch your legs in the nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park. Afternoon transfer to the ship. (B, D) DAY 3-4. The Drake Passage is home to thousands of seabirds including our favourite, the majestic wandering albatross. The expedition team will prepare you with presentations on everything Antarctic, from wildlife to history, and you can pick up some tips from the on-board photography expert. Before long we start to see our first icebergs announcing our arrival in Antarctic waters. (B, L, D) DAYS 5-9. In the calm waters of the Antarctic Peninsula, we explore the bays, harbours and coves in small, inflatable Zodiac boats, marvelling up close at nature s brilliance. As we quietly glide along the bays we are greeted by curious seals and whales, who often come close to check us out. Venture ashore to encounter a wonderful array of experiences, walk along the shore and gasp at the staggering amount of equally curious penguins and be amused at the squabbling and waddling of these entertaining birds. Historic huts and science bases offer a fascinating glimpse into life on the ice, and icebergs in all shades of blue, will take your breath away. We hope to step foot on the Antarctic Continent at either Neko Harbour or Paradise Harbour, and if the weather allows, we can camp on shore. History is a key theme of this voyage and the epic story of Shackleton is central to our journey. DAYS These next eight days will be unlike anything you have ever imagined. Majestic snow-covered mountains greet us on arrival in South Georgia. We begin by cruising the northwestern coast finding landing spots such as Elsehul Bay and Salisbury Plain. The highlight is the staggering abundance of king penguin adults and their young that live in these locations by the hundreds of thousands, covering every inch of the shore. Continue our journey deeper into the heart of South Georgia where our next expected stop is Prion Island, in the beautiful Bay of Isles. This island has been designated as a Specially Protected Area by the South Georgia Government, due to the breeding wandering albatross colonies at this location. History comes into sharp focus as we continue west to Stromness and Grytviken. From 1912 until the 1930 s, Stromness (and nearby Leith and Husvik), operated as whaling stations and the rusted and ghostly remnants of the old stations remain today. It was here, in 1916, that Shackleton and his companions, Worsley and Crean arrived after their epic crossing the south coast. If the weather co-operates, we hope to be able to hike the last few kilometres across the saddle, walking in the footsteps of Shackleton and his men. We journey southeast entering the broad expanse of Cumberland Bay. At the head of the bay lies Grytviken the largest of the old whaling stations on South Georgia. A highlight of our landing here is a visit to the gravesite of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his loyal right hand man Frank Wild. Our next few days take us to St Andrew s Bay and Gold Harbor - places that are teeming with wildlife, including fur seals, elephant seals and massive colonies of the colourful king penguins. As with all of our landings we will exercise every opportunity possible to explore on foot, as much or as little as you like. We hope to visit Drygalski Fjord, one of the most spectacular sites in South Georgia. In calm weather you can hear the glacier calving large chunks of ice into the steely blue waters. This place seems a fitting end to our adventures in South Georgia and, reflecting on seven epic days of exploration, we chart a return course to the Falkland Islands. DAYS Spend time catching up on journal entries, or perhaps downloading photos. For some, it s a chance to catch some well-earned rest after a busy week of exploration. Rocky outcrops are home to gentoo, Adelie and chinstrap penguin rookeries and the waters are rich in marine life. Enjoy several days of exploration with guided walks, visits to wildlife colonies, and zodiac cruising among the ice. DAYS 6-8. Entering the Weddell Sea, you see an increase in huge tabular icebergs some the size of whole city blocks making for exciting navigation. This afternoon we continue our journey south, navigating into the broad expanse of the Bransfield Straight making our way ever closer to the Antarctic coastline. This is an important migration corridor for wildlife and we keep a lookout for whales in the waters. By morning, the towering mountain peaks of the Antarctic continent loom into view and we should make landfall around Wilhelmina Bay. This is truly an A-list location and a place we often encounter sizeable pods of humpback whales. DAYS 7-9. Given favorable ice conditions, our first goal will be to sail south of the Antarctic Circle and into Crystal Sound. A favored landing site here is Detaille Island, home to an abandoned British science hut from the 1950 s. This vicinity marks our turnaround point and from now on, we return in a northerly direction exploring the dramatic coastline of the Antarctic Peninsula. We hope to visit a working scientific base to learn something of the important climate-related research happening here. If the conditions are right, we aim to offer our overnight camping program to all adventurers somewhere in this vicinity. We have all the gear onboard and an experienced team to make this a night to remember! DAY We aim to transit the Lemaire Channel on our way north towards Paradise Harbour. This may be the first opportunity to step foot on the continent of Antarctica itself. Nearby Neko Harbour offers another continental landing. Expect to be in full sensory overload by this time of the voyage. By morning we arrive in the South Shetland Islands. ITINERARY DAYS 1-2. Arrive Mount Pleasant Airport early afternoon and transfer by aircraft to Sea Lion Island. Accommodation at Sea Lion Lodge, just minutes walk from a rich variety of wildlife. An introductory and orientation tour by vehicle upon arrival will point out the principal areas of interest, although everything is in easy walking distance of the lodge. The Alto Atacama is a similar luxury experience in the driest desert in the world in Chile s north. They are like cheese and red wine perfect partners. OUR 4 NIGHT PACKAGE starts with collection from your hotel (or airport) in either El Calafate or Punta Arenas and includes a 3 ½ day personalised activity package with superb a la carte dining and beverages (you have to try the local Calafate sour). This is unquestionably one of the Falklands best wildlife sites with King and Rock Shag, Gentoo, Rockhopper, Magellanic, King and, if lucky a few Macaroni penguins to be seen as well as albatross. DAY 6. Transfer by aircraft to Stanley. City tour and museum trip. Two nights at your choice of B&B. DAY 7. A full day guided excursion in 4x4 vehicle to Volunteer Point will be a highlight of this trip. With the white sandy beach and turquoise waters, this destination has a Caribbean feel to it, but the King, Gentoo and Magellanic penguin will bring you back to the Falklands. DAY 8.
