2 WELCOME TO ANTARCTICA...it s a pretty cool place Antarctica is a breathtaking banquet of wilderness and wildlife. The highest, driest, coldest, windiest and most remote continent on the planet, it is one of the few places humans have not and cannot conquer and to immerse yourself in its icy walls is a life changing journey. Standing on the bow as you gently glide through the still waters enclosed by towering meringue covered peaks, you are entranced by the silence, interrupted by the thunderous crash of calving glaciers, rolling icebergs, and wildife passing by. Busybody penguins, graceful whales and curious seals combine to put on one of nature s finest performances, leaving you inspired, amazed and eager for an encore. Welcome to the icy world of Antarctica - a place that gets under your skin unlike anywhere else on earth. For some people it is a long held hope spanning years, for some it is an opportunity, for us it is a passion and a journey we know very well, having been there multiple times. We are dedicated to sharing our knowledge and experience to create your perfect Antarctic journey. Capturing your excitement and realising your Antarctic dream is our goal. From the awe you feel as you first glimpse the sweeping ice sheet covering the entire continent, to the endless joy from watching the profusion of penguins waddling across the snow, and watching whales gliding by we are here to help make it all happen. We want you to fall in love with Antarctica just like we have. We want to give you lasting memories and perhaps a desire to return. PHOTOS IN THIS BROCHURE We like to keep it real, so have mainly used photos taken by us or passengers, and are sure you will come back with equally impressive shots. We include photography tips in your preparation to help you capture the magic of Antarctica, and there s a professional photographer on every voyage to give you tips along the way. This is one of Rose s favourites from her March 2015 trip, taken on an afternoon Zodiac ride at Neko Harbour. She also took the cover shot earlier in the day after walking up the hill overlooking the same harbour. David s feature thoughout as well so be sure to ask us about some tips. We hope our brochure will inspire you to take your first step, and start your journey with us. Enjoy the read and we hope to talk soon. Rose and David FORWARDTRAVEL.COM.AU 3

4 GETTING THERE... TO SOUTH AMERICA LAN flies from Sydney to Santiago daily, via Auckland and QANTAS nonstop from 4 times a week. Both are One World partners and share each other s flights so you can purchase a LAN ticket and fly on a QANTAS flight. We ll explain it when we chat. The LAN network stretches to over 115 cities in South America, and flying on a LAN airline ticket, gives you up to 50% discount on flights within South America, making them the best option. Our close relationship with LAN ensure we have great value airfares in both economy and business and are experts in booking them. Air New Zealand start flying from Australia via Auckland to Buenos Aires in December This is particularly appealing for travellers from Perth who could be in Buenos Aires in under 21 hours, with just one stop. THE FORWARD ANTARCTICA MENU WHAT IS WHERE AND WHERE IS WHAT? 8-9 THE SHIPS AND EXPEDITION OVERVIEW DAY CLASSIC ANTARCTIC PENINSULA DAY BELOW THE ANTARCTIC CIRCLE DAY BACKROADS OF ANTARCTICA GETTING TO ANTARCTICA In 2016 we have more ways than ever to reach Antarctica. All voyages leave from the bottom of South America and visit the Antarctic Peninsula which stretches further north than elsewhere on the continent. This area is teeming with wildlife due to the warmer temperatures, and is much quicker to reach. Classic expeditions depart from Ushuaia in southern Argentina, taking under two days to reach Antarctica by ship across the fabled Drake Passage. We now offer several new expeditions that fly from Punta Arenas to Antarctica, then cruise to the Falkland Islands where you fly back to Punta Arenas in just 90 minutes. Some trips do this in reverse. There are options to spend a week before or after the cruise exploring the wildlife-rich Falkland Islands. We recommend having at least a few days in South America before your cruise so your body clock is adjusted and you have recovered from any jet lag. You are more likely to be affected by the ocean swell if you cruise straight away. NEW FLY IN / CRUISE EXPEDITIONS Maximise your time and fly over the Drake Passage to Antarctica, or into Stanley in the Falkland s. The time saved allows more time to reach areas rarely visited by other companies or linger a little longer at our favourite locations! You will see more wildlife species as well by visiting both the Antarctic peninsula and the sub-antarctic islands. For the ultimate adventure, combine two of the voyages and create the most extensive Antarctic expedition. Flights from Punta Arenas to/from King George Island (Antarctica) and to/ from Stanley (Falkland Islands) are included in the voyage price Just 70 passengers on each of these voyages making for a true smallship expedition experience. Akademik Sergey Vavilov has a fleet of 10 zodiac inflatable boats allowing huge flexibility in daily activity programming and operations. All the expeditions have been expertly planned and to be on any of them would be wonderful. ROSE SAYS: I like the tradition and history of the expeditions crossing the Drake Passage, and the anticipation of whether it will be lake or a shake? Being on deck watching the seabirds soar and whales drift by sets the scene as you push south. Seeing icebergs appear raises anticipation and the excitement reaching Antarctica really gets the heart beating. DAVID SAYS: Rose doesn t get seasick, I do. I d fly so I can get amongst it straight away and not risk a bumpy Drake. I think having extra time and the possibility to see other places is great, and I d add a week in The Falkland Islands after the cruise to explore the amazing wildlife haven. TRAVEL IN SOUTH AMERICA A trip to Antarctica is a fabulous excuse to see some of South America. We have included some trips in Chile and Argentina, featuring fabulous Patagonia on pages as a sample. Ask for our South America brochure for more ideas. TO USHUAIA for Classic Antarctica Expeditons Fly to Ushuaia from Buenos Aires, or El Calafate, in southern Patagonia. From Australia you need at least 2 nights before you cruise and another afterwards due to flights schedules. From Punta Arenas you can take a 12hr bus, or a luxurious 4 day Australis cruise through remote Patagonia. Or a 26 day Viva safari from Santiago to Ushuaia through remote parts of Patagonia; Ask Rose all about it as she has done it! TO PUNTA ARENAS for Fly/Cruise Expeditions 3.5hrs flying time south of Santiago, you can reach Punta on the same day leaving from Sydney or Melbourne. You could break the journey in Santiago or in the Lakes district. We d suggest allowing time to visit the beautiful Torres del Paine NP, a few hours north of Punta Arenas. It is spectacular, and has some fabulous lodges to either indulge in luxury or use a base for trekking. See pages for some ideas. THE FORWARD MENU We think planning travel is just like cooking. We choose the best ingredients and creatively find ways to showcase their highlights and cook it fresh for each diner (Antarctica may be frozen, our trips are not). We ll talk to you, find out how hungry you are and what flavours you like, so we can then cook the perfect recipe to tailored to your travel buds. We have added some great Chile and Argentina recipes to the back of this brochure, which would be perfect entrees or desserts to your Antarctic main course. In keeping with our cooking theme we have used the following symbols to add some Forward Flavour to each itinerary. We hope you like our way of thinking. 5 THE FORWARD GUIDE: WHAT WILDLIFE WILL YOU SEE? WHAT IS WHERE? AND WHERE IS WHAT? Antarctica is a big place and expeditions visit different parts of it and the wildlife varies in each location. This is not a trip to the zoo, and wildlife viewing can be unpredictable. Your expedition team has so much experience and knowledge though, that they know where the wildlife is likely to be. This is our guide to help you figure out where you want to go, and what you will likely see there. SOUTH GEORGIA ANTARCTIC PENINSULA The Antarctic Peninsula is mainland Antarctica, so unless you come here and set foot upon it, you have not truly been to Antarctica. Luckily all our Antarctic Expeditions visit it. It is a serenely beautiful place which makes you feel like a visitor into another world. From the moment you first cast your eyes on the seemingly meringue covered mountain peaks you will be enchanted. Once you reach its calm waters you ll realise the show never stops, and you have a front row seat. Incredible icebergs, massive glaciers and rugged snow covered mountains add to the magic. Curious penguins waddle by and fearless whales and seals pop up to check us out while in the zodiacs. Stunningly beautiful and isolated, this wildlife sanctuary, once visited, is not easily forgotten. Its snow covered peaks, blue glacial ice and emerald green bays, are breathtaking sights. 170km long with peaks up to 2,934m, glaciers cover more than half the island. Central to the whaling industry until the mid1960 s and known for its eternal connection to Sir Ernest Shackleton who lies at rest here, its history is as interesting as its wildlife is abundant. St. Andrew s Bay and Salisbury plain are greeted with disbelief at the sight of hundreds of thousands of king penguins filling every available inch of space, and vast quantities of elephant and fur seals occupying the sands along the water. The sights, sounds, and smells will not be forgotten soon. Visited by only a lucky few people each year, this is a very special place. THE FALKLAND ISLANDS THE WEDDELL SEA The rarely visited and ice-choked Weddell Sea is a beautiful region filled with gigantic tabular icebergs. This area is home to Adelie penguin rookeries of staggering size and is the realm of the emperor penguin, the largest of the penguins. It was here that Shackleton and his men drifted north on the ice after their ship was lost in the ice months earlier. Navigating through the heavily iced water always causes people to pause and consider the bravery and/or foolhardiness of those early explorers who travelled these waters a hundred years before us. The abundance and accessibility of the wildlife in the Falklands is staggering, rightly earning the islands the nickname Galapagos of the South. King penguins share the white sand beaches with many other penguins, including gentoos, rockhoppers, and magellanics. Large albatross colonies, and other marine bird species are just some of the highlights. Enter one of Stanley s pubs and be instantly transported to rural Britain, with décor, atmosphere, warm beer, and accents of a place far away. If your interests include wildlife, wilderness, walking, or war history, the Falklands is the place for you. PATAGONIA If you aren t planning to visit Patagonia in conjunction with Antarctica, you should be. Straddling the Southern Andes of Chile and Argentina, this place is truly jaw dropping! Northern Patagonia is home to forests, lakes, volcanoes and endearing villages with fine chocolates to tempt you. The south gives you rugged wilderness including Torres del Paine, perhaps South America s greatest National Park, and the breathtaking performance that is Perito Moreno glacier. Conveniently, at the very bottom you find Ushuaia and Punta Arenas. If you like the outdoors and inspirational landscapes then you need to put Patagonia on your menu. YOUR EXPEDITION TEAM One Ocean Expedition founder, Andrew Prossin outlines the company philosophy: People really matter on our expeditions and we show this at every opportunity, particularly by allowing our guests to have a say in how their experiences unfold. We create small special interest groups, so each individual can choose the activity best suited to them. Options and choices are provided throughout the voyage and we strive to take care of every detail. The One Ocean Expeditions team have many years of expedition cruising expertise coupled with specialty knowledge in their chosen field. In addition to our expedition and hospitality professionals, One Ocean Expeditions carries specialty staff on every voyage. This includes an English speaking emergency physician, resident professional photographer, registered massage therapist, fitness trainer and our unique multiskilled adventure concierges. EXPEDITION SEA KAYAKING The only activity that needs to be booked is kayaking, at USD795 per person. This is for the whole cruise and we expect to have between 4-7 chances to paddle on each trip. Each trip has 16 kayaking places so book early if you are really keen. The kayakers will have excursions away from the other passengers so they are able to glide quietly without engine noise, allowing a most memorable and emotional thrill. ADVENTURE CONCIERGES Once you board the ship, you leave the every day behind and emerge into the extraordinary. With their unique brand of customised informal hospitality, the team of adventure concierges ensures this happens. You feel right at home for the duration of your voyage where comfort and safety are top priority. The adventure concierges lead the way by connecting with guests on an individual basis. Understanding the unique desires of each client enables you to enjoy a very personal experience. They ll even bring hot chocolate up to you on the top deck. During the days at sea our expedition team will deliver presentations to educate and inform you, about all things Antarctic, including the history and the wildlife you will soon meet. Days are spent on deck eagerly scanning the ocean for whales, and the sky for seabirds, with call outs over the PA system when sightings are made, and the captain will often slow down so we can enjoy the show. Once we arrive at a destination, we aim to have at least two Zodiac excursions each day, some may be cruising around enjoying the playful wildlife or exploring glaciers and icebergs up close. Some will be shore landings where you can go on short or long walks with your expert leaders, and we will have many visits to penguin rookeries to admire and smile as these curious birds waddle by. CAMPING IN ANTARCTICA (INCLUDED) We will try to camp ashore for a night on most trips and it is included in the price. There are enough tents and bivvy bags for everyone so you don t need to book it in advance, simply decide on the day. It is less likely on the 18 night journeys as we have less time in Antarctica, and also the Marine Mammal voyage as we try to cover more ground finding wildlife, than using the time to overnight in one place to camp FORWARDTRAVEL.COM.AU 11

8 Rose and David s thorough attention to detail with my first trip to Antarctica contributed greatly to my most amazing travel experience! The ship, the crew and the great One Ocean team took care of the rest. It s a phenomenal place and I was thrilled to make it twice in a lifetime in SUZANNE C. ORANGE ITINERARY DAY 1. Met upon arrival in Ushuaia and transferred to your hotel transfer. DAY 2. Cast your eyes to the pier where your ship is waiting for you. Explore town or perhaps stretch your legs in the nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park. Afternoon transfer to the ship. (B, D) Meander through the superb Lemaire Channel, watched over by the majestic, sheer rock and ice walls of Booth Island and the snow covered twin peaks of Cape Renard, soaring up to 1km high at its northern end. The scenery here is something to behold, and undoubtedly a highlight of the voyage. We frequently encounter humpback whales in the broad expanse of Wilhelmina Bay. JOURNEY BELOW THE CIRCLE CROSSING SOUTH OF THE ANTARCTIC CIRCLE IS A RARE EXPERIENCE ACHIEVED BY VERY FEW AND FORTUNATE TRAVELLERS, BUT EVEN BETTER THAN THAT IS HAVING TWO EXTRA DAYS IN ANTARCTICA. VOYAGE BELOW THE ANTARCTIC CIRCLE LEMAIRE CHANNEL AND ICEBERG ALLEY ICE CAMPING EXTENDED HOURS OF DAYLIGHT HISTORIC HUTS AND SCIENCE STATIONS 14 JAN 2017 (I) On this voyage, we push further south than at any other time of the season and aim to cross the Antarctic Circle. It s a huge thrill and a bucket list item for most guests who join this voyage. Best of all, are the extra days we have to explore the Antarctic coastline compared to shorter voyages. If you are short on time, but still want to cross the circle check out the NEW 10-night fly/cruise voyages on the Akademik Sergey Vavilov Quest for the Antarctic Circle. DAY 3-4. Chart a course directly south to the Antarctic Circle at S and then slowly meander north through the sheltered waters of the Antarctic Peninsula. Few ships reach this far south and we appreciate being on a modern, ice-strengthened vessel. Enjoy the friendly atmosphere on-board as our expedition team prepare us for adventures with informative presentations. Stroll the decks and watch the sky and ocean come alive with an array of seabirds and whales keeping us company. Feel the temperature drop as we cross the Antarctic Convergence and the excitement builds knowing soon we will cast our eyes upon the white continent itself, shining like a fluffy meringue. DAYS Our expert expedition team, some of whom have been here over a hundred times still get a thrill with the pristine beauty of the Antarctic Peninsula. The abundance of wildlife here is truly extraordinary with five seal species, huge penguin rookeries and a profusion of seabirds. Frequent excursions let you experience nature up close. Our first objective will be to sail south of the Antarctic Circle. If ice conditions allow, we will push further south, to several fascinating historic sites and vast penguin colonies including the comical little Adelies who prefer the cooler temperatures found further south. We eventually chart a northerly course, cruising through the spectacular waterways of Crystal Sound, the Neumeyer Channel and into the Gerlache Strait. Hardy adventurers have the chance to camp on the ice, feeling the thrill of surely the planet s most remote camp site. Visit Pleneau Islands and cruise through the iceberg alley by inflatable boat. The extended daylight at this time of the season is very easy to get used to and it is quite a thrill to be on deck at 2am watching the superb show Mother Nature is putting on all around you. You may be a bit sleep deprived, but trust us you won t mind at all. As we start heading north the huge tabular icebergs scale down in size and up in the amount of blue tones trapped in their ancient, frozen water. As we quietly glide along the bays we are greeted with curiosity by the seals and sometimes whales, who will come up close to check us out. Walk along the shore line and encounter an abundance of curious penguins, take time to sit down and delight as they approach to check you out. Let them entertain you with their squabbling, waddling and feeding their chicks. We may also visit a research station to see what the scientists are working on. DAYS Leave this wonderland and head north towards South America and round Cape Horn, respected by sailors throughout the ages. As we join in a special dinner attended by the Captain of the ship, we happily spend the evening reflecting on one of life s great experiences. DAY 15. We disembark early morning and will be transferred to the airport. Prices are in USD and are per person, per berth. Sole use of twin cabins has a 50% surcharge, and is double for a suite. DAYS 7-8. Heading to South Georgia the days at sea are spent scanning the horizon for whales and seabirds and the ship-board presentations are in full swing with lectures and videos helping us to fully appreciate our journey. DAYS Majestic snow-covered mountains greet us on arrival in South Georgia. We explore the protected waters looking for interesting landing spots including Salisbury Plain, St Andrews Bay and Gold Harbour. These locations are home to a staggering abundance of brightly coloured king penguins. More than 100,000 birds congregate in each of these vast rookeries, covering every inch of the shore and far inland among the tussock grass. Fur seals cover the beaches, while giant petrels and majestic albatross swoop in the skies above. We plan a visit to historic whaling station of Grytviken and pay our respects at the grave of the most famous Antarctic explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton. For many, this is a highlight of the trip. DAYS Crossing the Scotia Sea we inch closer to Antarctica, skirting the South Orkney Islands. We soon start to encounter our first large icebergs announcing our arrival to Antarctica. Snow covered peaks and heavily glaciated landscapes are all around us now and we explore the calm waters by Zodiac boats, enjoying several shore excursions each day. This itinerary features incredible wildlife encounters, copious history and stunning scenery. Our two departures allows for up to TEN consecutive days of exploration in South Georgia witnessing what has often been described as the greatest wildlife show on earth. This is more than double the time traditionally spent on voyages which also include Antarctica. On both departures, our popular photography symposium adds yet another dimension. On the October departure, a South Georgia Alpine crossing will be offered, follwing in the footsteps of Shackleton, Crean and Worsley years ago. Experienced trekkers only! ITINERARY DAY 1. Arrive today in Punta Arenas and transfer to your hotel for the night. DAY 2. Fly from Punta Arenas to Stanley in the Falkland Islands. Transfer to the ship and set a course for South Georgia. DAYS 3-4. Much of our time is spent on the bridge or outer decks scanning the horizon in search of whales and other marine mammals. We spend plenty of time with our on board polar experts who will be educating us on the wonders of the South Atlantic Ocean and Sub- Antarctic eco-systems. History is a key theme of this voyage and the epic story of Shackleton is central to our journey. DAYS These next eight days will be unlike anything you have ever imagined. Majestic snow-covered mountains greet us on arrival in South Georgia. We begin by cruising the northwestern coast finding landing spots such as Elsehul Bay and Salisbury Plain. The highlight is the staggering abundance of king penguin adults and their young that live in these locations by the hundreds of thousands, covering every inch of the shore. Continue our journey deeper into the heart of South Georgia where our next expected stop is Prion Island, in the beautiful Bay of Isles. This island has been designated as a Specially Protected Area by the South Georgia Government, due to the breeding wandering albatross colonies at this location. History comes into sharp focus as we continue west to Stromness and Grytviken. From 1912 until the 1930 s, Stromness (and nearby Leith and Husvik), operated as whaling stations and the rusted and ghostly remnants of the old stations remain today. It was here, in 1916, that Shackleton and his companions, Worsley and Crean arrived after their epic crossing the south coast. If the weather co-operates, we hope to be able to hike the last few kilometres across the saddle, walking in the footsteps of Shackleton and his men. We journey southeast entering the broad expanse of Cumberland Bay. At the head of the bay lies Grytviken the largest of the old whaling stations on South Georgia. A highlight of our landing here is a visit to the gravesite of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his loyal right hand man Frank Wild. Our next few days take us to St Andrew s Bay and Gold Harbor - places that are teeming with wildlife, including fur seals, elephant seals and massive colonies of the colourful king penguins. As with all of our landings we will exercise every opportunity possible to explore on foot, as much or as little as you like. We hope to visit Drygalski Fjord, one of the most spectacular sites in South Georgia. In calm weather you can hear the glacier calving large chunks of ice into the steely blue waters. This place seems a fitting end to our adventures in South Georgia and, reflecting on seven epic days of exploration, we chart a return course to the Falkland Islands. DAYS Spend time catching up on journal entries, or perhaps downloading photos. For some, it s a chance to catch some well-earned rest after a busy week of exploration. The wonderful lounge and bar on our ship provides fantastic panoramas and the educational presentations continue, with an entertaining voyage recap by our Expedition Leader. DAY 15. We wake to the sight of landfall in the Falklands. We launch the zodiacs and go ashore at Sea Lion Island to view the incredible diversity of wildlife found at this location. Three species of penguin including gentoo, magellanic and rockhopper, as well as southern elephant seals and South American sea lions inhabit the area. As we cruise along the coast bound for Stanley, we enjoy a special dinner attended by the ship s Captain. DAY 16. Arrive into Port Stanley this morning and transfer to the airport for the flight to Punta Arenas in Chile. * NOTE: THE ITINERARY ABOVE IS BASED ON THE JANUARY 2017 DEPARTURE, WHICH FINISHES IN STANLEY AND FLIES BACK TO PUNTA ARENAS (CHILE). THE OCTOBER DEPARTURE FINISHES IN USHUAIA (ARGENTINA). OCTOBER DEPARTURE IS TWO DAYS LONGER AND FEATURES THE SOUTH GEORGIA CROSSING AS AN OPTION. Prices are in USD and are per person, per berth. 12 ITINERARY ROYAL ANTARCTICA - AMONGST EMPERORS AND KINGS FLY STRAIGHT TO ANTARCTICA, BOARD THE SHIP AND GET AMONGST THE ICE AND IMMEDIATELY START EXPLORING THE SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS FROM THE VERY FIRST DAY. This popular fly-in/cruise itinerary includes all the key locations along the Antarctic Peninsula, enters the Weddell Sea where the massive tabular icebergs roam, stops at Elephant Island, central to the Shackleton tale and finishes in the Falkland Islands. Here, the icing on the cake of this exceptional voyage will be the close observation of the black-browed albatross colonies on West Point Island, plus a visit to the glorious King penguin rookeries on nearby Saunders Island. This trip provides fantastic diversity in a relatively short voyage of just 12 days. On this expedition, we anticipate nine days of offship excursions on shore. Truly the ultimate Antarctic experience! DAY 1. Arrive today in Punta Arenas and transfer to your hotel for the night. DAY 2. Fly from Punta Arenas over the Drake Passage to King George Island, located just 60 nautical miles from the continent of Antarctica. Transfer to the ship and immediately you will be awestruck by the snow covered peaks of the South Shetland Island group. DAYS 3. Explore the South Shetland Islands. Possibly visit Deception Island, an extinct volcanic caldera into which the ship can sail. The rusted old whaling station at Baily Head looks completely out of place. There are some great hikes here, around the dilapidated old buildings, or high up to a breathtaking viewpoint. This evening we set off across the Bransfield Strait bound for continental Antarctica. DAYS 4-5. The Antarctic Peninsula is home to deep bays, pristine coves and numerous small islands. The landscape features heavily glaciated mountains permanently covered in ice and snow. Rocky outcrops are home to gentoo, Adelie and chinstrap penguin rookeries and the waters are rich in marine life. Enjoy several days of exploration with guided walks, visits to wildlife colonies, and zodiac cruising among the ice. DAYS 6-8. Entering the Weddell Sea, you see an increase in huge tabular icebergs some the size of whole city blocks making for exciting navigation. We find Adelie penguin rookeries of astonishing sizes, and excursions may include Paulet Island, Brown Bluff and even the southerly Snow Hill Island, where we observe Weddell and elephant seals, skuas and other seabirds. If the weather allows, you may choose to camp ashore overnight imagining was it was like for those early explorers. Sailing among the islands of the Weddell Sea, we are in the realm of the emperor penguin, the largest of the penguins. Everyone will be on deck keeping a lookout. DAY 9. The southern tip of Elephant Island is home to an impressive macaroni penguin colony. This will be another penguin species to add to your wildlife list. Shore landings at the fabled Point Wild, where Shackleton and his men were encamped under their upturned life boats, are notoriously tricky due to pounding surf on the rocky beach. If conditions are right, you may be able to get ashore. Even from the ship anchored offshore, this is a thrilling location and a major highlight for history buffs. DAY While sailing across to the Falkland Islands our polar experts recap our adventures and prepare us for the day ahead. The spectacular seabirds, including several albatross and petrel species are our constant companions as they soar above the ship. Our educational program continues and our experts entertain us with lively presentations. DAY 12. Arriving into the Falkland Islands overnight, you explore the western archipelago. West Point is known for its sizeable rookeries of rockhopper penguins and nesting black browed albatross. While nearby Saunders Island with its white sand beaches features no less than four penguin species, including gentoo, magellanic, and rockhopper - and our ultimate goal for the Falkland Island visit, the impressive king penguin. Tonight you celebrate with a special dinner attended by the ship s Captain, while reflecting on this life changing journey. DAY 13. Navigate through the narrows and into the harbor of Port Stanley. The history of early polar exploration is a popular theme. Excitement builds as we see our first icebergs. DAYS 5-6. This morning we are in position at King George Island the largest in the South Shetlands group. Penguin Island and nearby Turret Point offer good opportunities for shore landings. This afternoon we continue our journey south, navigating into the broad expanse of the Bransfield Straight making our way ever closer to the Antarctic coastline. This is an important migration corridor for wildlife and we keep a lookout for whales in the waters. By morning, the towering mountain peaks of the Antarctic continent loom into view and we should make landfall around Wilhelmina Bay. This is truly an A-list location and a place we often encounter sizeable pods of humpback whales. DAYS 7-9. Given favorable ice conditions, our first goal will be to sail south of the Antarctic Circle and into Crystal Sound. A favored landing site here is Detaille Island, home to an abandoned British science hut from the 1950 s. This vicinity marks our turnaround point and from now on, we return in a northerly direction exploring the dramatic coastline of the Antarctic Peninsula. We hope to visit a working scientific base to learn something of the important climate-related research happening here. If the conditions are right, we aim to offer our overnight camping program to all adventurers somewhere in this vicinity. We have all the gear onboard and an experienced team to make this a night to remember! DAY We aim to transit the Lemaire Channel on our way north towards Paradise Harbour. This may be the first opportunity to step foot on the continent of Antarctica itself. Nearby Neko Harbour offers another continental landing. Both locations offer terrific hiking opportunities up to panoramic view points. For the sea kayakers, the paddling opportunities here are endless. Expect to be in full sensory overload by this time of the voyage. By morning we arrive in the South Shetland Islands. The adventure is not over and if the weather conditions allow, we sail the ship into the flooded volcanic caldera at Deception Island. Charting a course for King George Island in early evening light, we enjoy a special dinner attended by the Captain of the ship. DAY 12. This morning we are anchored off King George Island. We say goodbye to our crew and transfer ashore by zodiac and time permitting, we will explore the surrounding area. There are several important science bases here including Chile s Frei Station and Bellingshausen Station. We are transferred to the airstrip for the two-hour flight to Punta Arenas in southern Chile (this flight is included in the price of your voyage). We recommend you spend a night in Punta Arenas in the event of any delays returning from Antarctica today. On arrival, a transfer is provided to several hotel locations downtown. 17 TORRES DEL PAINE BALMACEDA AND SERRANO GLACIERS THE SINGULAR INCLUDES MEALS BEVERAGES AND ACTIVITIES ALBATROSS ROOKERIES MULTIPLE PENGUIN SPECIES HISTORIC STANLEY ALL MEALS ON ISLANDS, BEAKFAST DAILY IN STANLEY OCT-APRIL OCTOBER - APRIL 8DAYS 5 DAYS $5,850 PER PERSON, TWIN SHARE $3,650 PER PERSON, TWIN SHARE A SINGULAR EXPERIENCE A luxurious feast for all your senses 5 DAYS A suggested itinerary to showcase some key wildlife areas. WILDLIFE OF THE FALKLANDS Comprising 57 luxurious rooms (each 45sq m) all with views overlooking the fjord, the feeling is understated opulence. The common areas have a welcoming club feel with every piece of furniture being designed and built specifically for the hotel. The care and thought that has gone in to each aspect of your stay has been equally crafted. Multiple penguin species, large albatross colonies, and many marine mammals are just some of the highlights. Enter one of Stanley s pubs and be instantly transported to rural Britain, with décor, atmosphere and accents of a place far away. If your interests are wildlife, wilderness, walking, or war history, the Falklands could be the place for you. WITHOUT QUESTION THE SINGULAR IS STILL OUR FAVOURITE HOTEL: QUITE SIMPLY IT IS FABULOUS. IT IS MORE THAN A HOTEL, IT IS AN EXPERIENCE, 100KM SOUTH OF TORRES DEL PAINE NP. Choose from a myriad of touring and sightseeing options ranging from horse riding, glacial boat trips, relaxing sojourns through Torres del Paine or trekking to the Base of The Towers for those more energetic. Our clients come back with absolute praise for the hotel, only wishing they had more time just to enjoy the hotel itself, so we have a special recipe for our Forward thinking travellers. ITINERARY DAYS 1-2. Arrive Mount Pleasant Airport early afternoon and transfer by aircraft to Sea Lion Island. Accommodation at Sea Lion Lodge, just minutes walk from a rich variety of wildlife. An introductory and orientation tour by vehicle upon arrival will point out the principal areas of interest, although everything is in easy walking distance of the lodge. The Alto Atacama is a similar luxury experience in the driest desert in the world in Chile s north. They are like cheese and red wine perfect partners. OUR 4 NIGHT PACKAGE starts with collection from your hotel (or airport) in either El Calafate or Punta Arenas and includes a 3 ½ day personalised activity package with superb a la carte dining and beverages (you have to try the local Calafate sour). This gives you plenty of time to savour the magic of Patagonia, especially Torres de Paine NP, and indulge in the serenity of the hotel. We like to think of it as a mini holiday. At the end you will be driven to El Calafate or Punta Arenas. Spa treatments have been added to the included activities list. So you can swap and half day excursion for a relaxing treatment of massage instead. THE ABUNDANCE AND ACCESSIBILITY (ONCE YOU GET THERE) OF THE WILDLIFE AT HOME, IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT HAVE RIGHTLY EARNED THE FALKLANDS THE NICKNAME GALAPAGOS OF THE SOUTH. The Michelin starred Chef at Malvina House ensures creative tasty cuisine. This is Britain, so it has to be a pint of bitter in the one of Stanley s pubs. DAYS 3-5. Aircraft transfer to Saunders Island, and 4x4 vehicle to Rookery Inn, a comfortable cottage located on the cliff top with magnificent views of the islands along the north of West Falkland and easy access to the Blackbrowed albatross colony. This is unquestionably one of the Falklands best wildlife sites with King and Rock Shag, Gentoo, Rockhopper, Magellanic, King and, if lucky a few Macaroni penguins to be seen as well as albatross. DAY 6. Transfer by aircraft to Stanley. City tour and museum trip. Two nights at your choice of B&B. DAY 7. A full day guided excursion in 4x4 vehicle to Volunteer Point will be a highlight of this trip. With the white sandy beach and turquoise waters, this destination has a Caribbean feel to it, but the King, Gentoo and Magellanic penguin will bring you back to the Falklands. DAY 8. Transfer to Mount Pleasant Airport by private vehicle. Your route will take you past many of the 1982 battlefields and, more historically, relics from the gaucho era of the 1800 s FORWARDTRAVEL.COM.AU 33
