4 GETTING TO ANTARCTICA... TO South America LATAM flies from Sydney to Santiago daily, via Auckland and QANTAS non-stop from 4 times a week. Both are One World partners and share each other s flights so you can purchase a LATAM ticket and fly on a QANTAS flight. We ll explain it when we chat. The LATAM network stretches to over 115 cities in South America, and flying on a LATAM airline ticket, gives you up to 50% discount on flights within South America, making them the best option. Our close relationship with LATAM ensure we have great value airfares in both economy and business and are experts in booking them. Air New Zealand fly from Australia via Auckland to Buenos Aires. This is particularly appealing for travellers from Perth who can be in Buenos Aires in under 21 hours. TO USHUAIA for Classic Antarctica Expeditons Fly to Ushuaia from Buenos Aires, or El Calafate, in southern Patagonia. From Australia you need at least 2 nights before you cruise and usually another afterwards due to flight schedules. From Punta Arenas you can take a 12hr bus, or a luxurious 4 day Australis cruise through remote Patagonia. Or a 27 day Viva safari from Santiago to Ushuaia through remote parts of Patagonia; Ask Rose all about it as she has done it! TO Punta Arenas FOR FLY/CRUISE EXPEDITIONS 3.5hrs flying time south of Santiago, you can reach Punta on the same day you leave Australia. We recommend you break the journey in Santiago or the Chilean Lakes area. While in Punta we suggest you take time to visit Torres del Paine NP, a few hours to the north. It was voted the 8th Wonder of the World and is absulety spectacular. You can actively explore it or take comfort in fabulous lodges.see pages for ideas. MORE FLY IN / CRUISE EXPEDITIONS THAN EVER! Due to the popularity and extra time we have added more fly/cruise trips, on both ships. Maximise your time and fly over the Drake Passage to Antarctica, or into Stanley in the Falklands. The time saved allows more time to reach areas rarely visited by other companies or linger a little longer at our favourite locations! You will see more wildlife species as well by visiting both the Antarctic peninsula and the sub-antarctic islands. For the ultimate adventure, we have combined two of the voyages to create the most extensive Antarctic expedition ever offered. See our Epic voyage on page 16 Flights from Punta Arenas to/from King George Island (Antarctica) and to/ from Stanley (Falkland Islands) are included in fly/cruise prices. Just 70 passengers on each of these voyages making for a true small-ship expedition experience. ROSE SAYS: I like the tradition and history of the expeditions crossing the Drake Passage, and the anticipation of whether it will be lake or a shake? Being on deck watching the seabirds soar and whales drift by sets the scene as you push south. Seeing icebergs appear raises anticipation and the excitement reaching Antarctica really gets the heart beating. TRAVEL IN SOUTH AMERICA A trip to Antarctica is a fabulous excuse to see some of South America. We have included some trips featuring fabulous Patagonia, Machu Picchu and Iguazu Falls on pages as a sample. Ask for our Patagonia, Chile, Ecuador and South America brochures for more ideas. DAVID SAYS: Rose doesn t get seasick, I do. I d fly so I can get amongst it straight away and not risk a bumpy Drake. I think having extra time and the possibility to see other places is great, and I d add a week in The Falkland Islands after the cruise to explore the amazing wildlife haven. THE FORWARD ANTARCTICA MENU WE THINK PLANNING TRAVEL IS JUST LIKE COOKING We choose the best ingredients and creatively find ways to showcase their highlights and cook it fresh for each diner. (The Antarctic may be frozen, our journeys are not). We ll talk to you, find out how hungry you are and what flavours you like, so we can cook the perfect recipe tailored to your travel buds. We have included some great Patagonia, Chile, Argentina and Peru recipes which would be perfect entrees or desserts to an Antarctic cruise main course. In keeping with our cooking theme here is our menu, and the symbols below to add some Forward Flavour to each itinerary. We hope you like our way of thinking. 5 THE FORWARD ANTARCTIC GUIDE: WHAT WILDLIFE WILL YOU SEE? WHAT IS WHERE? AND WHERE IS WHAT? Antarctica is a big place and expeditions visit different parts of it and the wildlife varies in each location. This is not a trip to the zoo, and wildlife viewing can be unpredictable. Your expedition team has so much experience and knowledge though, that they know where the wildlife is likely to be. This is our guide to help you figure out where you want to go, and what you will likely see there. SOUTH GEORGIA ANTARCTIC PENINSULA The Antarctic Peninsula is mainland Antarctica, so unless you come here and set foot upon it, you have not truly been to Antarctica. Luckily all our Antarctic Expeditions visit it. It is a serenely beautiful place which makes you feel like a visitor into another world. From the moment you first cast your eyes on the seemingly meringue covered mountain peaks you will be enchanted. Once you reach its calm waters you ll realise the show never stops, and you have a front row seat. Incredible icebergs, massive glaciers and rugged snow covered mountains add to the magic. Curious penguins waddle by and fearless whales and seals pop up to check us out while in the zodiacs. Stunningly beautiful and isolated, this wildlife sanctuary, once visited, is not easily forgotten. Its snow covered peaks, blue glacial ice and emerald green bays, are breathtaking sights. 170km long with peaks up to 2,934m, glaciers cover more than half the island. Central to the whaling industry until the mid1960 s and known for its eternal connection to Sir Ernest Shackleton who lies at rest here, its history is as interesting as its wildlife is abundant. St. Andrew s Bay and Salisbury plain are greeted with disbelief at the sight of hundreds of thousands of king penguins filling every available inch of space, and vast quantities of elephant and fur seals occupying the sands along the water. The sights, sounds, and smells will not be forgotten soon. Visited by only a lucky few people each year, this is a very special place. THE FALKLAND ISLANDS THE WEDDELL SEA The rarely visited and ice-choked Weddell Sea is a beautiful region filled with gigantic tabular icebergs. This area is home to Adelie penguin rookeries of staggering size and is the realm of the emperor penguin, the largest of the penguins. It was here that Shackleton and his men drifted north on the ice after their ship was lost in the ice months earlier. Navigating through the heavily iced water always causes people to pause and consider the bravery and/or foolhardiness of those early explorers who travelled these waters a hundred years before us. The abundance and accessibility of the wildlife in the Falklands is staggering, rightly earning the islands the nickname Galapagos of the South. King penguins share the white sand beaches with many other penguins, including gentoos, rockhoppers, and magellanics. Large albatross colonies, and other marine bird species are just some of the highlights. Enter one of Stanley s pubs and be instantly transported to rural Britain, with décor, atmosphere, warm beer, and accents of a place far away. If your interests include wildlife, wilderness, walking, or war history, the Falklands is the place for you. PATAGONIA If you aren t planning to visit Patagonia in conjunction with Antarctica, you should be. Straddling the Southern Andes of Chile and Argentina, this place is truly jaw dropping! Northern Patagonia is home to forests, lakes, volcanoes and endearing villages with fine chocolates to tempt you. The south gives you rugged wilderness including Torres del Paine, perhaps South America s greatest National Park, and the breathtaking performance that is Perito Moreno glacier. Conveniently, at the very bottom you find Ushuaia and Punta Arenas. If you like the outdoors and inspirational landscapes then you need to put Patagonia on your menu. 7 BEST ANTARCTIC SMALL SHIP - LESS THAN 150 PASSENGERS as rated by Cruise Critic ONE OCEAN EXPEDITIONS IOFFE AND VAVILOV ABOUT CRUISE CRITIC Cruise Critic is the leading cruise reviews and information site which hosts the largest cruise community in the world. Since its inception in 1995, Cruise Critic has earned the status of being the most influential cruise site on the Web, and an innovator of consumer-oriented cruise travel news. The site was acquired by TripAdvisor in 2007, and is part of the largest travel community in the world. WHY THEY CHOSE THEM Even though there are lots of even smaller ships going to Antarctica, these two offer the most cruise-like experience on board and ashore, including any amenities and services that could be expected on this size of a ship. These former Russian research vessels are as technically advanced as any sailing Antarctica, but modern touches include all outside cabins, excellent observation decks and inflatable rafts for excursions. WHO WILL LIKE IT? Anyone who enjoys the small-ship experience should do well with either of these options. ABOUT THEIR ITINERARIES As mentioned, itineraries provided by the lines are only a general plan. Generally, each cruise has a different basic itinerary (and, often, a theme), but it s still all based on weather conditions and it s generally quite flexible. A mainstay for Ioffe and Vavilov is, of course, the Antarctic Peninsula; other possibilities include the South Shetland Islands, the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. INTRODUCING ONEAN S NEW SHIP THE RCGS RESOLUTE THE 10TH YEAR OF ONE OCEAN EXPEDITIONS WILL SEE THE EXPANSION AND ENHANCEMENT OF THEIR EXPEDITION FLEET. Designed for comfort, the RCGS Resolute is modern, well appointed, safe and icestrengthened. From small group sessions to briefings for all passengers, we have public spaces onboard the ship ideally suited for each and every need. Two separate bar and lounge areas featuring 180 degree views and a wonderfully stocked library provide ideal places to relax or catch up on some reading. The sumptuous meals prepared for you by our culinary team are enjoyed in either of our two dining rooms, one of which features our popular bistro menu offering quick and easy meals for those prioritizing time out on deck. Both dining rooms have ample and open seating paired with modern furnishings and large picture windows with 180 degree views. Other facilities include our theatre style presentation room, giftshop, gymnasium, wellness centre, hot water spa, sauna and steam room and salt water pool. ANTARCTIC SEASONS. WHEN TO GO. 8 JOIN AN ACTUAL SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION MARINE MAMMAL RESEARCH TRIP March has the highest concentration of whales in Antarctica. On this special expedition we are joined by several world-renowned whale experts to observe, and help with, their important fieldwork. Visit long-term research sites, and share unique footage and scientific data. We ll be encouraged to help too, by photographing the flukes of whales to help plot their migration path. This special journey provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of Antarctic science. It is also the peak season for leopard seals, so we re sending Australia s leading expert with you to give an added insight into these amazing animals too. LEAD SCIENTIST/RESEARCHER YOUR TOUR LEADER PRICES IN AUD Dr. Ari S Friedlaender, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University Ari will share cutting-edge scientific research results with passengers and encourage them to participate with ongoing cetacean sighting programs during the voyage. The experts guidance provides valuable and fascinating insight into the world of Antarctic science with an underlying message of conservation through education and inspiring experiences. One of the most critical parts of our science is being able to better communicate our findings with the broader community. Our tag and drone work will be presented to passengers and we will also show images of whales from above and how they behave as well as animal-borne video from our tags. This unique perspective will allow both scientists and passengers to share the amazing lives of whales in Antarctica, states Dr. Friedlaender. Ady Adoncello, Australia s leading seal expert Ady s passion is the marine environment and sustainability. She has over 30 years experience working with and studying seals, including leopard seals, one of the few people in the world to have done so, and she has also cared for and worked with penguins. There are 85 million seals in Antarctica, and Ady will bring unrivalled knowledge and understanding of these of them, from the beautiful, doe eyed Weddell seal, through to the sleek, opportunistic and lethal, Leopard seal. Ady will present talks, hold discussions, and assist in field walks with seal identification and behaviour interpretation. Ady has travelled to Antarctica several times, both as an excited passenger, and a guest expert, this time she will be your Tour Leader, giving you unprecendented access to information to enhance your Antarctic experience. 27 FEBRUARY FLY TO BUENOS AIRES. Fly from Australia via Santiago to Buenos Aires. Met upon arrival by our local guide and taken to our hotel. 28 FEBRUARY BUENOS AIRES This morning be introduced to the sights and sounds of the most European city in South America. Cross the 18 lanes of the main Avenue, see the famous Plaza Rosada, visit the vibrant and colourful La Bocca, and stop for a moment at the tomb of Eva Peron. This afternoon is yours to explore further, maybe tour the impressive Teatro Colon, or people watch in the many cafes. This evening we ll join together for a typical night of Argentinian feasting; empanadas, steak and red wine. 01 MARCH BUENOS AIRES TO USHUAIA This morning we ll transfer to the airport for our flight to Ushuaia, fin del Mundo as the locals call it. But we know it is not the end of the world, because we are going further south. Afternoon to stroll around town, and soak up the excitement as our journey south approaches. 02 MARCH. USHUAIA DRAKE PASSAGE Upon waking this morning turn your eyes to the pier where our ship will be waiting. Take a trip to the National Park to see the end of the Pan American Highway, maybe a helicopter ride over the mountains, or pick up some penguin souvenirs overflowing form the shop windows. Board the ship this afternoon and enjoy a welcome drink, dinner and then cast off, bound for Antarctica and the adventure of a lifetime. 3-4 MARCH. DRAKE PASSAGE Sailing south towards Antarctica we will be joined by hundreds of seabirds including the wandering albatross as we cross the Drake Passage. Spend time on the bridge watching the sailors take on the Southern Ocean. Our experts will educate us with presentations about the environment, wildlife, history and the locations we hope to visit in the coming days. As we approach the coastline of Antarctica, whale sightings increase significantly. 5 8 MARCH. ANTARCTIC PENINSULA Take a deep breath we have arrived. Eagerly wake this morning to see the magnificent snowy peaks of continental Antarctica laid out before us. Even hardened expedition staff, some with more than 100 journeys south, take a moment to reflect on the immense power of Antarctica. The Antarctic Peninsula is home to deep bays, pristine coves, inlets, and numerous islands. Heavily glaciated mountains covered in ice and snow, and rocky outcrops, are home to gentoo, Adelie and chinstrap penguin rookeries. Seals, including the powerful leopard seal, are often found relaxing on the ice pasing by. Curious humpback whales and the smaller minke whales are found in sizeable numbers, and orca sightings are not uncommon. We ll head to whale hot-spots and explore in Zodiacs hoping to encounter pods of whales. The science team hope to deploy non-invasive tracking tags on the whales to collect data on dive and feeding patterns. You can collect data too: whale flukes (tails) are unique identifiers, just like human finger prints, and we want everyone to take photos of them so we can identify them, which is vital to understanding the whale migration patterns We also have our regular explorations on and off the ship; zodiac cruising, guided hikes and visits to wildlife colonies are daily. Visits to historic huts and science stations provide a fascinating glimpse into the past and the present. Zodiac cruising among the ice is a memorable activity with shapes and colours that defy definition. Kayakers may range several miles from the ship seeking solitude and peace. The professional photographer will help with camera settings, image composition and the alluring light found in Antarctica. Excursions could include Cierva Cove, Danco Island, or a cruise through the Errera Channel to visit the penguin rookeries at Cuverville Island. Wilhelmina Bay never disappoints and is another important location where the scientists hope to deploy their research tools. Neko Harbour is yet another highlight and offers an excellent hiking route providing stunning 360 degree views. This is an important whale migration corridor and frequent sightings can be expected of humpbacks and even the fast-moving orca. 9 MARCH - SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS The adventure continues as we head north, with a possible visit to the flooded volcanic caldera at Deception Island. History is all around us as we explore the old whaling station, with the rusted old boilers, aircraft hangar and dilapidated wooden structures. There are several other nearby landing sites to tempt us including Half Moon Island, or the broad pebbly beach at Yankee Harbour, where we often encounter Weddell seals sunning themselves. This is a great spot for a hike or a Zodiac cruise. In the evening, we navigate through the McFarlane Strait and into the Drake Passage, charting a course for South America MARCH. DRAKE PASSAGE As we make our way back to Ushuaia, the presentations continue and we enjoy an entertaining and memorable voyage recap by our Expedition Leader. Join our photography experts in the multimedia room and download and back up your precious images. If weather conditions allow, we hope to make a rounding of Cape Horn. This fabled stretch of water is home to legendary tales of exploration and early navigation. It s a fitting place to reflect on a wonderful expedition. Approaching the entrance to the Beagle Channel in early evening light, we enjoy a special dinner attended by the Captain of the ship. 12 MARCH. Venture ashore to encounter a wonderful array of experiences, walk along the shore and gasp at the staggering amount of equally curious penguins and be amused at the squabbling and waddling of these entertaining birds. We hope to step foot on the Antarctic Continent at either Neko Harbour or Paradise Harbour, and if the weather allows, we can camp on shore. DAY 09. SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS (BLD) We head for South Shetland Islands and if weather conditions allow, we sail the ship into the flooded volcanic caldera at Deception Island. History surrounds us at the old whaling station and dilapidated wooden buildings. DAY CAPE HORN, BEAGLE CHANNEL (BLD) As we make our way back to South America, the educational presentations continue and we enjoy an entertaining and memorable voyage recap by our Expedition Leader. Approaching the entrance to the Beagle Channel in early evening light, we enjoy a special dinner attended by the Captain. DAY 12. USHUAIA FAREWELL (B) In the early morning, we arrive into Ushuaia. It is time to say farewell to your crew and fellow travelers. Guests will be transported to their hotels or to the airport. MARINE MAMMALS, 2-13 MARCH, 22 MAR - 02 APR 2019 Late season is bustling with activity so this trip is focused on understanding and interacting with the amazing whales, seals (and penguins) of Antarctica. There will be time to explore the town before embarkation. Excitement is in the air as we cast off, bound for Antarctica, and the adventure of a lifetime. DAYS SOUTH ATLANTIC We chart a southerly course for Antarctica. This stretch of the South Atlantic is rich in marine life and showcases an abundance of wildlife. A hike over the snowy saddle of nearby Winter Island allows us to stretch our legs and explore a historic British Antarctic Survey hut. Petermann Island is home to an Adelie penguin rookery. Pleneau Island offers opportunities for shore landings. A zodiac cruise here may well be a highlight of the voyage. DAY PARADISE HARBOUR We cruise north towards Paradise Harbour. By morning we arrive in the South Shetland Islands towards Whalers Bay at Deception Island, a very dramatic place and history is all around us as we explore the old whaling station. This is where Australian explorer and pioneer aviator, Sir Hubert Wilkins made the very first flight in Antarctica in DAY 12. KING GEORGE ISLAND This morning we are anchored off King George Island. You will say farewell to many of your fellow passengers as they disembark.there will be an opportunity to go ashore, or you may wish to relax on board. We are soon underway for the second leg of our epic adventure. DAY GERLACHE COASTLINE The Gerlache coastline is one large polar playground with a great variety of landing sites. As always the weather and ice will dictate our route. Planned visits could include Port Charcot, Orne Harbour or Andvord Bay. All three locations offer excellent hiking opportunities, or a cruise through the Errera Channel to and land on Danco Island a large dome shaped island with terrific views of the region from its summit. DAY 16. ANTARCTIC SOUND, WEDDELL SEA We are now on our way towards Antarctic Sound the gateway into the icy Weddell Sea. On our port side, will be the South Shetland Islands. Half Moon Island is nearby and is home to a sizeable chinstrap penguin rookery. Across the MacFarlane Strait is Yankee Harbour with its broad pebble beach a known location for Weddell seals. DAY ANTARCTIC ICECAP As we sail into the sound we witness, for the first time the vast sweep of the Antarctic icecap. It is an awe-inspiring sight. Heading into the Weddell Sea we notice a significant increase in the number of huge tabular icebergs and the presence of sea ice. The Weddell Sea region is home to Adelie penguin rookeries of staggering size some contain more than 100,000 nesting birds. Such colonies dwarf the rookeries we have visited so far. Weather permitting, excursions may include Hope Bay, Paulet Island and Brown Bluff. The history of exploration in this region is incredibly rich. The epic century-old story of Shackleton and the HMS Endurance expedition has strong links to the region. DAYS FALKLAND ISLANDS While sailing north to the Falkland Islands spectacular seabirds once again join us and are our constant companions as they soar above the ship. Arriving into the Falkland Islands overnight, we explore the islands of West Point and Saunders, in the West Falkland archipelago. This itinerary features incredible wildlife encounters, copious history and stunning scenery. Our two departures allow for up to 7 consecutive days of exploration in South Georgia witnessing what has often been described as the greatest wildlife show on earth. This is more than double the time traditionally spent on voyages which also include Antarctica. FLY TO STANLEY, FALKLAND ISLANDS Fly from Punta Arenas to Stanley in the Falkland Islands. Transfer to the ship and set a course for South Georgia. DAYS 3-4. SOUTH ATLANTIC OCEAN Much of our time is spent on the bridge or outer decks scanning the horizon in search of whales and other marine mammals. We spend plenty of time with our polar experts who will be educating us on the wonders of the South Atlantic Ocean and Sub-Antarctic eco-systems. History is a key theme of this voyage and the epic story of Shackleton is central to our journey. DAYS SOUTH GEORGIA These next eight days will be unlike anything you have ever imagined. Majestic snow-covered mountains greet us on arrival in South Georgia. We begin by cruising the north-western coast finding landing spots such as Elsehul Bay and Salisbury Plain. The highlight is the staggering abundance of king penguin in these locations by the hundreds of thousands, covering every inch of the shore. Journey deeper into the heart of South Georgia where our next expected stop is Prion Island, in the beautiful Bay of Isles. This island has been designated as a Specially Protected Area by the South Georgia Government, due to its breeding wandering albatross colonies. History comes into sharp focus as we continue west to Stromness and Grytviken. From 1912 until the 1930 s, Stromness, Leith and Husvik, operated as whaling stations and the rusted and ghostly remnants of the old stations remain today. It was here, in 1916, that Shackleton and his companions, Worsley and Crean arrived after their epic crossing the south coast. If the weather co-operates, we hope to be able to hike the last few kilometres across the saddle, walking in the footsteps of Shackleton and his men.we journey southeast entering the broad expanse of Cumberland Bay. At the head of the bay lies Grytviken the largest of the old whaling stations on South Georgia. A highlight of our landing here is a visit to the gravesite of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his loyal right hand man Frank Wild. Our next few days take us to St Andrew s Bay and Gold Harbor - places that are teeming with wildlife, including fur seals, elephant seals and massive colonies of the colourful king penguins. As with all of our landings we will exercise every opportunity possible to explore on foot, as much or as little as you like. We hope to visit Drygalski Fjord, one of the most spectacular sites in South Georgia. In calm weather you can hear the glacier calving large chunks of ice into the steely blue waters. This place seems a fitting end to our adventures in South Georgia and, reflecting on seven epic days of exploration, we chart a return course to the Falkland Islands. DAYS RETURN TO FALKLANDS Spend time catching up on journal entries, or perhaps downloading photos. For some, it s a chance to catch some well-earned rest after a busy week of exploration. The wonderful lounge and bar on our ship provides fantastic panoramas and the educational presentations continue, with an entertaining voyage recap. DAY 15. SEA LION ISLAND We wake to the sight of landfall in the Falklands. We launch the zodiacs and go ashore at Sea Lion Island to view the incredible diversity of wildlife found at this location. Three species of penguins: gentoo, magellanic and rockhopper, as well as southern elephant seals and South American sea lions inhabit the area. As we cruise along the coast bound for Stanley, we enjoy a special dinner attended by the ship s Captain. DAY 16. PORT STANLEY PHOTOGRAPHY IN FOCUS Arrive into 03 Port NOVEMBER Stanley this morning VOYAGE and transfer to the airport for return flight to Punta Arenas. 15 ANTARCTICA DEEP SOUTH GO FURTHER SOUTH THAN ANY OTHER JOURNEY A special journey taking you further south than at any other time in the season THEN HEAD NORTH AS WELL... Once you have been South, you might want to consider heading North to the incredibly vast and breathtaking Arctic, where a giant sheet of ice links three continents and wildlife freely roams, swims and flies across them. Where for just three months each year the ice retreats, the sun emerges, temperatures rise and this incredible world comes alive, inviting us in. This is the Arctic, poles apart from Antarctica, but equally impressive, with polar bears instead of penguins. ASK FOR OUR ARCTIC BROCHURE NOW See the ONE CLUB offers on page 7 WHAT THE KEY REGIONS ARE AND WHY WE THINK THEY RE SPECIAL Spanning three continents, The Arctic is diverse and divided. Wildlife spreads across the vastness, with a great varierty found in most locations. Geographic and historic differences set some areas apart, so this is our guide to help you figure out where you want to go, and what awaits you there. The time we save by flying south, allows for a more substantial exploration below the Antarctic Circle. Here we witness stunning landscapes, sizable Adelie penguin rookeries and large flat-topped tabular icebergs that drift north from the Bellingshausen Sea. We always anticipate exciting ice navigation when we push this far south. We navigate the glaciated coastline of the Antarctic Peninsula, passing through various archipelagos on our way to the Gerlache Strait region. We hope to reach Marguerite Bay. This is a spectacular location reached by just a handful of ships each season. BELOW THE ANTARCTIC CIRCLE MARGUERITE BAY HISTORIC DETAILLE ISLAN MULTIPLE SHORE LANDINGS 12 NIGHTS / 13 DAYS 2019: 17 FEB - 04 MAR (I),18 FEB - 03 MAR (V) AKADEMIK SERGEY VAVILOV INCLUDES FLIGHT FROM PUNTA ARENAS TO KING GEORGE ISLAND DAY 01. PUNTA ARENAS Arrive in Punta Arenas. Transfer to your hotel for included pre-cruise accommodation. DAY 02. FLY THE DRAKE TO KING GEORGE IS Our journey commences in Punta Arenas, located in southern Chile, where we board our two-hour flight across the Drake Passage to Antarctica. Upon arrival at the King George Island in Antarctica, we embark our ship via Zodiac inflatable crafts. DAYS 3 7. ANTARCTIC CONTINENT Overnight we have navigated across the Bransfield Strait and awake to the towering peaks of the Antarctic continent. For the next five days we have a varied itinerary pushing southwards with much to see and do. We will be opportunistic, making shore landings in locations navigating to our ultimate objective below the Antarctic Circle. Planned visits might include Port Charcot, several locations in the Fish and Argentine Island archipelagos which allow for zodiac cruising and potential shore landings, a hike on Winter Island to explore the old British Antarctic Suvey Hut- Wordie House, Petermann Island, and a cruise through Lemaire Channel if ice allows. PRICES ARE IN USD, PER PERSON SHARING THE CABIN.SEE PAGE 39 FOR TERMS AND CONDITIONS. DAYS SOUTH OF ANTARCTIC CIRCLE Given optimal ice conditions, we aim to sail south of the Antarctic Circle. A favoured landing site here is Detaille Island, home to an abandoned British science hut, providing a glimpse into the harsh life of early Antarctic scientists and researchers. We are at the mercy of prevailing ice conditions navigating even further south. Years of experience tell us that late February gives us our best chance of reaching Marguerite Bay. We may take the shortcut through a narrow channel known as the Gullet if the passage is ice-free. Otherwise, we could navigate around the outside of Adelaide Island - which will take more time, yet bring us to the same destination. DAYS SOUTH AMERICA VIA CAPE HORN We leave this magical place and chart a course north back to South America, heading again across the Antarctic Convergence. If weather conditions allow, we hope to make a rounding of Cape Horn. This fabled stretch of water is home to legendary tales of exploration and early navigation. It s a fitting place to reflect on a wonderful expedition. Reminders of exploration, trading outposts and even Cold War era bases, lie throughout. The area has huge amounts of wildlife which, due to the vastness is spread over a large area. Our Arctic partners at One Ocean Expeditions have several hot spots they have found over the years for polar bears, giving you a great chance of seeing them. In the 15C explorers started searching for a much hoped for passage through the Canadian Arctic linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, to open up trading routes. Many endeavours met with disaster. In 1850 a way was finally discovered, and in 1906, Roald Amundsen completed the first passage from Greenland to Alaska. GREENLAND The largest, non-continental island in the world, and its least populated. Greenland is a vast, remote land with a unique culture. It brings ancient traditions to a modern world. Brilliantly colourful villages dot the whiteness. The massive icecap produces all of the Arctic s soaring icebergs. NORTHERN LIGHTS - AURORA BOREALIS Anyone fortunate enough the see the lights will be beaming with the memories for a long time. They re like a huge theatre curtain flowing across the sky with colours ranging from yellow to green to pink, to blue, with a million stars providing a spectacular background. Luckily Yellowknife in Canada has some of the best in mid Aug-Sep. Perfect to add to an Arctic trip. ICELAND A tiny country with a population of a mere 250,000. Iceland offers incredible scenery and unparalleled geological attractions. Iceland is where glaciers reach for the skies and deep blue mountain lakes fill steep valleys and are surrounded by sharp green peaks on all sides. Hidden hot springs in secluded valleys far far away from civilisation, will relax and calm you as you take in the spectacular views. NORWEGIAN ARCTIC - SVALBARD Svalbard is a more compact destination so you don t need to cruise far to see scenery, history and wildlife. Located less than 1,000km from the North Pole it is the best place for polar bears. We focus on the north and west, being the most interesting, diverse and wildlife rich parts of the archipelago. POLAR BEARS, THE KINGS OF THE ARCTIC The hope of seeing these majestic animals lures most people north. Being predominantly predatory hunters they are usually spread far and wide, making finding them equivalent to an African game safari. Svalbard is great due to its remoteness and limited human population, and Canda has some great hotspots too, as Rose discovered recently. Churchill on the shore of Canada's Hudson Bay is the best land vantage point, although only for 6 weeks a year. We think the best way to see polar bears is by ship where you can go to them rather than hope that they will come to you FORWARDTRAVEL.COM.AU 29

(B) 3 DAYS 3 DAYS 3 DAYS 3 DAYS THE FORWARD PATAGONIA GUIDE The bottom of South America may be the culmination of a fantastic journey, or the starting point of a lifteime s dream to visit Antarctica. Whatever has led you here, it is a great place to be. Frontier towns acknowledge the efforts of the pioneering explorers of the past, as well as eagerly welcoming today s explorers for their own adventures. We specialise in Patagonia, with extensive knowledge and ideas for you. WHAT THE KEY REGIONS ARE AND WHY WE THINK THEY RE SPECIAL Patagonia straddles the Southern Andes of Chile and Argentina. It s a land of perfect volcanoes, serene lakes, glorious glaciers and breathtaking fjords. This place is jaw droppingly good! The north is home to forests, lakes and volcanoes, and the south gives you rugged wilderness including Torres del Paine, perhaps South America s greatest National Park, and the breathtaking performance that is Perito Moreno glacier. If you like the outdoors, picturesque villages, and inspirational landscapes make sure you put Patagonia on your menu. CHILE Bounded by the pacific and the Andes, Chile stretches from the stark Atacama desert to the lush rainforests and peaks of Patagonia. It is a veritable feast for all travellers. The Atacama gives you spectacular light and clear skies, making it seem possible to reach out and touch the snow-capped volcanoes. The central area gives you vibrant and historic cities, and fabulous wineries to savour the local flavours. From top to bottom Chile will inspire and reward you, surpassing all expectations. NORTHERN PATAGONIA A place to feel small. Remote, untouched, uncrowded, and not a tourist or postcard in sight. Northern Patagonia stands out from the rest of the region because of its woods and water. The former are dense and opaque and covered with vegetation like moss and lichen. The latter can be found in many forms, including lakes, rivers, waterfalls, glaciers and fjords. The region s landscape will captivate you from the moment you arrive. ARGENTINA Don t underestimate the sophisticated cities, wonderful wineries, the wilderness of Patagonia, and make sure to leave room for a tango show or football game. Buenos Aires is a fabulous city renowned for its elegance, and perhaps surprisingly, its European feel. Whether you venture north to the astounding Iguazu Falls, or south to the magical vastness of Patagonia, there are so many places to visit we can t fit them all in but will happily flavour your trip to your taste. Just let us know. SOUTHERN PATAGONIA There are places in the world where the view seems to go beyond the horizon, and you can be utterly at peace and at one with nature. Southern Patagonia is one such place; where the astonishing light is full of contrasts, colours and textures thanks to the southern latitude. Sail through fjords, canals and the Strait of Magellan while gazing out onto hundreds of glaciers. SOUTH AMERICA South America is possibly the best, and most complete, menu you could ever read. Some of the dishes that you recognise are the wildlife abundant Amazon, generously spread across 7 countries, including Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, and the smorgasbord of nature and wildlife found in The Galapagos. You probably also know the history laden Incan areas spread over 3,000km, most celebrated at Machu Picchu. Sometimes you see things you don t recognise, but reading the tasting notes you become intrigued as curious to try them too. The immaculately beautiful Patagonia and the expansive Atacama, using a less can be much more approach, are two we think will appeal. Natural beauty is found everywhere, with steaming and snow-capped volcanoes, vast deserts, soaring peaks and ancient forests reaching across many borders. Manmade beauty also abounds in colonial, modern and UNESCO preserved cities, each one with their own music, traditions and cultures. You already have images of the places that will lure you to South America, so our goal is to introduce you to more places that are also worthy of making it to your menu. Following is a very small selection of our tourrs to the delights of South America, Please ask us for a copy of our dedicated South America brochure FORWARDTRAVEL.COM.AU 33

Make your visit even better by staying at Hotel das Cataratas inside the National Park, giving you access to the Falls before the crowds arrive. 4 DAYS DAY 1. PUERTO IGUAZU Arrive in Puerto Iguazu and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to explore the town. Pisaq, welcomes you to the Sacred Valley with a beautiful cluster of archaeological fortresses built to guard Machu Picchu. Today it is also home to one of the best markets in Peru, so maybe it s your wallet that needs guarding. TAQUILE ISLAND Taquile island s locals are experts in the art of traditional textiles, and were recognised by UNESCO in 2005 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. SACRED VALLEY AND MACHU PICCHU - PERU Set out on a journey through the Incan empire in the beautiful Valle Sagrada. Discover superb sites, warm hospitality, ancient trails and be mesmerised by the terraces at Moray. A great extended introduction to Machu Picchu, or a relaxing unwind after. DAY 1. CUSCO - SACRED VALLEY Met upon arrival in Cusco and be driven to the famous Pisaq market and nearby ruins, set high above a valley rimmed by vast terracing. The citadel is magnificent and in the main ruins we will find temples of the sun, moon, rain, rainbow, and stars. Lunch will be with a local family in Urubamba where we sample a delicious Andean soup. Afternoon visit Ollantaytambo to see the Temple of the Sun, formed with six gigantic monoliths. Drop off at your lovely lodge in the Sacred Valley. DAY 2. MORAY, MARAS (BL) Visit Moray, the surprising circular terraces hidden among the hills. Learn the fascinating history of how the Incas used the slightly different climate on each level to maximise the crops. Walk through the valley to the salt mines of Maras. DAY 3. INKARAKAI (BL) See a different side of the valley on a hike with llamas through pristine landscapes to the remains of Inkarakai, formerly a retreat for the Virgins of the Sun. Enjoy a picnic in the beautiful setting and end the day at nearby waterfalls. DAY 4. MACHU PICCHU (B) Take the scenic train up to Machu Picchu. Indulge in a private guided tour of the site and then have time to explore on our own before returning to Aguas Calientes to take the late afternoon train to Cusco and on to the hotel. DAY 5. CUSCO (B) Discover the charm of Cusco on your guided tour. Visit the famous cathedral and Temple of the Sun. Walk along Hatunrumiyoc Street to see the 12-angled stone in the walls of what used to be Inca Roca s Palace. Visit San Blas quarter with its steeped cobblestone alleys lined with workshops and galleries, a great place to soak in Cusco s artistic atmosphere. DAY 6. CUSCO (B) Transfer to the airport or station. MARKETS The Chinchero market is the most authentic in the valley. On Sundays locals come from across the valley, in their traditional dress, for the produce market. This is a rare chance to see genuine bartering, an ancient practice here. MACHU PICCHU PRIVATE TOUR BEAUTIFUL SACRED VALLEY PISAC MARKETS CIRCULAR TERRACES AT MORAY HIKE WITH LLAMAS CUSCO YEAR ROUND FROM: TWIN 2018 $1,850 PER PERSON TWIN SHARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE 6 DAYS DAY 2. BRAZILIAN FALLS (B) After breakfast take a half day tour to the Brazillian side of Iguazu Falls. Your guide will take you to the best viewpoint of Devil s Throat, where the largest amount of water pours through the fallls. At 262 feet, it s a must see! You ll then visit the world-class Bird Park, on 12 acres of subtropical forest. You can interact with birds in their natural habitat without restrictions as you enter huge, 8-meter high, forest aviaries. There are over 160 species. Cayman, snakes, humming birds and butterflies are also on show. The afternoon is at leisure. DAY 3. ARGENTINE FALLS (B) Explore the Argentine side of the falls. We begin with a 4km train ride to get andother perspective of the Devil s Throat. Walk along the upper circuit where we will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the waterfalls. Finally your guide will take you to the Lower Circuit where you have the chance to take a boat underneath the falls. DAY 4. END OF TOUR (B) Take time to wander around town before being transfered to the airport for your onward journey.
