2 NICE/36 Shirakami 1 (Aomori) 25/06 04/07 ENVI 6 vols. (3 int.) Organized together with Shirakami Mountains Preservation Society (SMPS) since 06. The Shirakami Mountains is a huge mountainous area and one of Japanese valuable preserved natural forests consisting primarily of beech trees. It was registered as a World Natural Heritage in 1993 and SMPS aims to help preserving the natural beauty of the Shirakami Mountains, so we try to maintain this forest by the global voluntary power! W: We will do various types of nature conservation works such as 1) Cutting glasses to improve ecological richness of the forest and 2) Maintain the forest with the villagers. We will also help local farmers. Part of World Tanabata Action. S: Similar kind of activities in each country and World Tanabata Action. Bring some info.! A: A simple house. SB! CV L: The Shirakami Mountains, located in the northern part of Honshu Island, is a huge mountainous area (130,000 hectares on the border between Aomori and Akita Prefectures). T: Tokyo (7 hours by bullet train or 10 hours by bus) LA: Exchange parties, excursion, etc. SR: volunteers must be prepared to work outside in good and bad weather and have motivation to actively work in the forests with local people! NICE/43 Onuma 1 (Hokkaido) 23/07 01/08 ENVI 10 vols. (6 int.) Organized together with Onuma Milestone 22, a local NGO made by President of Fishermen s Cooperative and Director of international exchange association since Though Onuma lake has been a popular tourism spot for a long time because of its beautiful scenery, it has been polluted by over use of agricultural chemicals in cattle farming and erosion from abandoned forests with alien trees. President of Cooperative has bought a forest and wants to revive it to original nature with native trees! W: We will remove some alien conifer trees that disturb growth of other plants and animals and also help to prepare/ run/ clean up the Lake Water Festival on Jul. We will also make and put the carbon fivers in the lake to purity the water with some specialists. Part of World Tanabata Action. S: 100 years plan of the forests and sustainable town planning. You will live and work together with 5 volunteers (Japanese and international) of the 3 months workcamp in 23 Jul. 10 Oct.

3 NICE/55 Taishi Tonda 1 (Osaka) 06/08 20/08 ENVI 10 vols. (5 int.) Organized in collaboration with local NPOs, Association to protect nature in Tondabayashi and Hamuro club. Even though 70% of Japan s land is forested, the forests are not properly maintained, as there is a lack of investment in the health and ecology of these ecosystems, since imported wood is much cheaper. Over 90% of our forests are not virgin forests and cannot be left as nature, so it is important to provide continuing care for our forests. We will try to revive our forests and create a balanced ecology. W: We will work in two different forests. One is the NICE Forest, where we often have weekend workcamps. We will cut and clear trees to make trails, cut grasses and make steps for a footpath in an abandoned rice field. Part of the World Tanabata Action project. S: Similar kinds of activities of forest care and protection in each country. Please bring some information A: Simple renovated house and a log house constructed by local people. NICE/58 Hagi (Yamaguchi) 09/08 22/08 KIDS, ENVI 10 vols. (5 int.) This is first workcamp organized in collaboration with the local organization Avukawa Genryu Kids camp & environment protection. Hagi is a famous city for traditional Japanese castle. With the migration of people to big cities, declining birthrates and an ageing population small towns face serious problems. The local children don t have enough opportunity to have foreign cultural exchange. Also, there are not enough young people to preserve rural environment like festival, preserve the forest, maintain the school ets Children can learn through experiences in a natural environment. W: We organize kids camp for international exchange. Please bring your national game that can be played with kids. Also, we maintain the primary school, ground, farming land etc. We ll join rural traditional festival which cannot held by local people. S: Similar kinds of activities about free schools in each country. Please bring some information! A: School. CV. L: 500 km southwest of Osaka, Shikoku area T: Fukuoka(3 hours by train). 4 NICE/60 Ogi (Niigata) 12/08 01/09 ENVI, FEST 6 vols. (3 int.) Organized together with Morito, a local voluntary group in Sado Island, since They care for the school forest called Furusato no mori Park in Ogi town, on the southern part of the island. They make it possible for the community to enjoy the forest in every season. They are now trying to focus on caring for the forest in a joint effort with the community. They hope youth and foreign volunteers will mentally and physically help to empower the area. W: We will participate in the famous art festival Earth Celebration and sell soba (buckwheat Japanese noodles) with the local people. We will also work in the school forests, cutting bushes and creating recreation programs for local youth to experience the forest. Part of the World Tanabata Action. S: Unique festivals in each country. Bring some info.! A: Tents. SB! CV L: 300 km northeast of Tokyo. Sado Island is famous for gold and the Japanese crested ibis. Ogi is in the southern part beside the beach, where you can enjoy fishing and the hot spring! T: Tokyo (6 hours by bullet train and ferry from Naoetsu port) LA: Exchange parties, excursion, fishing, etc. SR: Some Japanese fluency as it will often be run in JAPANESE! Experience in nature programs with youth is welcome. NICE/68 Tokyo ko (Tokyo) 31/08 14/09 ENVI 12 vols. (6 int.) Organized together with Green Volunteers of Tokyo Port (GVTP) since Because construction plan was delayed, a reclaimed land became one of valuable natural place in Tokyo Bay with some ponds and many plants, so various kinds of birds gather there. It became a park in 1989 and GVTP has been improving ecological conditions and guide visitors to promote ecological awareness. NICE is working with them very successfully by international and weekend workcamps! W: We will mainly revive a plain of reed where various types of birds twitter beautifully by digging a waterway by that kudzu (arrowroot) will be weaken. This work needs to be done in a short time by many vols. that cannot be done only by the members of GVTP most of who have their jobs. S: Global environment and World Tanabata Action. 5 NICE/69 Nabari 2 (Mie) 01/09 15/09 ENVI 10 vols. (5 int.) Organized together with ʺAkame no Mori wo Mamoru kaiʺ, a local environmental NPO since Being located near from both big cities of Osaka and Nagoya, there were some plans of a golf link and disposing industrial garbage and local people have stopped them by ʺWoods Trustʺ movement. They formed this group in 96 to collect donations to buy and protect lands, to own a pension to enjoy nature, to maintain forests, to create a pond for dragonflies, to host national copse meeting, etc. W: We will do various works to take care of the forest such as cutting trees, cutting branches, maintain the footpath, etc. Main work of this year is fixing a hiking way near the pond for dragonflies. Physically hard. Part of World Tanabata Action. S: Local participation to protect nature and World Tanabata Action. Bring some info.! A: The pension named ʺEco Resort Akameʺ. SB! CV L: About 60 km east of Osaka. There are famous falls nearby many hikers visit. The climate in this season is quite cold, so donʹt forget to bring warm clothes. Same as NICE/43 Onuma 1 23/07 01/08 except the following points; W: We will mainly remove some alien conifer trees that disturb growth of other plants and animals and also make and put the carbon fivers in the lake to purity the water with some specialists and put some stones to protect the banks from the waves made by motor boats as Part of World Tanabata Action. LA: Excursion, joining the summer festival, exchange parties, home stay, school visit, etc. NICE/76 Iwami Ginzan 2 (Shimane) 12/09 25/09 ENVI 8 Vols. (4 int.) The first workcamp was organized in 2007 in collaboration with the Organization of Green and Water (founded in 1992). This organization was established to advocate for the importance of the prairie and forest in our ecosystem. They work around Iwami Ginzan, a silver mine, which was registered as a World Heritage site in The organization wants to care for the forests and prairies. It is important to continue to care for our forests after we have disrupted the ecosystem. W: We will do a variety work to maintain and protect the forests such as cutting bamboo and grasses, maintaining the footpath, etc Extending bamboo forest is serious problem in Japan. It will be physically challenging. Part of the World Tanabata Action. S: Similar kinds of activities of forest care and protection in each country. Please bring some information A: National Mikame youthʹs house. SBN MP L: About 250 km northwest of Osaka. Near the Sea of Japan T: Osaka (9 hours by train). From Tokyo, 6 hours by bullet train or 12 hours by midnight bus. LA: Visiting school, exchange parties, home stay. SR: Interested in nature conservation

6 CIEEJ01. Neiraku kyodo gakusya/hokkaido 8 th 21 st July AGRI/ENVI/CULT Volunteers: 3 Host Institution: Neiraku Kyodo Gakusha Terminal: JR Sapporo Station Nearest airport: Shin Chitose airport Background: Obira cho where the facility stands is a coastal city located in the north part of Hokkaido. It s a small town with about 4000 residents. The facility where volunteers will work is 14 km away from the Japan Sea and 25 people are working there. Their duty includes taking care of the swine and hens, cultivation of rice and vegetables, and selling their products (such as sausages, eggs etc.) to the local people. Work Volunteers will help farm work (mainly weeding) and daily routines in the facility. Volunteers are expected to communicate with people at the facility and with students visiting an elementary school and a junior high school in the town. They will also participate in the town festival. Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in the facility. Facilities and Fixtures: Beddings will be provided. There are a washer, a kitchen, a lavatory and a bathroom. Meals: Meals will be provided 3 times a day including holidays. What to bring: Volunteers need to bring work clothes (which can get dirty), long sleeved T shirts or sweatshirts (it will be cold in the mornings and evenings), a hat/cap for outdoor work, toiletries, and towels. Please also bring something to introduce your home country such as game, recipes, ingredients, music instrument. Note: This project is suitable for those who enjoy living in nature and want to experience the country life in Japan. Location: Hokkaido, where the town of Obira is located, is the biggest and northernmost prefecture in Japan. It is also known as the 21 st largest island in the world with abundant nature and a number of national parks. Hokkaido attracts millions of tourists from other regions in Japan not only by the vast wilderness the island possesses but also by its breezy, dry climate in summer and the mountain ranges covered by beautiful crystal powder in winter. Obira is a quite isolated area and it takes 2.5 hours from Sapporo by bus.

7 Remarks: Volunteers need to go to bed early and rise early!! Work will start around 6:00 am and finish around 5:30 pm. But the work pace is slow. Some of users are inadaptable to society, due to physical and mental problems and others are enjoying being self sufficient in a small town. CIEEJ03. Mimasaka/OKAYAMA 20 th July 3 rd August ENVI/CULT Volunteers: 6 Sponsor: Mimasaka International Exchange Association Terminal: Kansai International Airport Station: JR Hayashino Station Background: Local sponsor, Mimasaka International Exchange Association(MIEA) was founded in 1998 as an activity group of Mimasaka citizens. The primary aim of MIEA is to contribute to the internationalization of Mimasaka city. 119 volunteers from 19 countries have worked here in Mimasaka. Work: There will be many events and work such as follows: Welcome party, orientation meeting, river survey, river cleaning (with volunteers), street cleaning (with local residents from 30s to 60s), Japanese traditional culture experience (with volunteers), International Exchange Meeting, temple cleaning (with volunteers), farewell party and so on. Volunteers will also participate in a local festival. Volunteers are going to interact with local high school students (15 18 y.o) visiting the high school, with elementary school students (7 10 y.o.) and with a group of babies and their mothers (20 30s), Volunteers are expected to act actively and cooperatively. Accommodation: During this project, each volunteer will be accommodated in a house of local host families. Volunteers should expect and respect some house rules at each family. Facilities and Fixtures: Beddings will be provided. There are a washer, a kitchen, a lavatory and a bathroom. Please note that volunteers will be staying at a house of host family. So the use of facilities like a washer and kitchen must be consulted with the family. You may need to do the laundry by yourself or the laundry will be washed together with other family members and asked to help it, etc. Please ready to be flexible. Meals: Meals will be provided by the host family. What to bring: Clothing need to be suitable for activities, such as T shirts, pants, and sneakers. Long sleeved shirts and a hat/cap are must. In addition to clothing, please bring toiletries, towels and other things you

8 need for daily life. Rubber boots and rubber gloves are necessary for cleaning work. Note At International Exchange Meeting, a booth will be prepared for each country to introduce their country, region, family and things of your interests. Please bring something which you can display at the booth (Photos, CD, books, magazines, toys, games, snacks etc.) During the program, you will be frequently asked to introduce yourself in interchange events. Please be prepared. Location: MIEA is located in Mimasaka city in Okayama prefecture. It is famous for beautiful landscape and hot springs. The most notable sightseeing spot is the birthplace of Musashi Miyamoto (1584~1645), the strongest swords man handling two swords at the same time. Hayashino Station is located about 1 and 1/2 hours by train (JR Kishin line) from HIMEJI city in Hyogo prefecture. Himeji Castle is one of the oldest and most beautiful castles in Japan. Remarks: Volunteers are expected to learn about Japanese culture and custom in advance. During the camp, volunteers are expected to transfer by bicycle, so every participant must be able to ride bicycle!! Home stay Make a good relationship with your host family. Help your host family with housework as a member of the family. In advance tell your host family what food you can eat or not Keep phone numbers (home and mobile phones) of your host family with you all the time. Abstain from going out at night CIEEJ09. HIGASHI SHIRAKAWA MURA/ GIFU 2 nd 15 th August CULT/RENO/ENVI Volunteers: 15 (M10/F5) Host organization: Higashi Shirakawa mura Board of Education Airport : Central Japan International Airport Station: JR Higashi Shirakawaguchi station Background: Higashi Shirakawa mura Board of Education offers this program in cooperation with Nagoya University of Commerce & Business Administration and invites international volunteers to this small village which is not so famous but has many nice places and attractive things. It is a great opportunity to enjoy Japanese traditional pastoral scene and life! Work: 1. Cultural exchange activity with junior high school students: Volunteers will visit a junior high school to have cultural exchange activity with 9 th graders (14 15 y.o). For instance, they will enjoy Japanese traditional Origami or Calligraphy and play sports together so as to help the students to have international minds. 2. Helping Kids program for elementary school students: Volunteers will join Kids Canoeing program along the nearby river and help their activity. The participants will be elementary school

9 students (6 11 y.o.). 3. Helping events: Volunteers will help local people prepare and organize a summer dancing festival and other events. 4. Experiencing the local industry, timber industry: Volunteers will experience timber industry such as tree thinning, pruning and land cleaning. You will work with people in 30s to 60s. 5. Cleaning cultural facilities: Volunteers will clean up shrines etc. You will work with people in 60s to 80s. 6. Helping NPO Aozora Kenbun Juku: Volunteers will interact with children and staff and work on maintenance of hiking roads. Volunteers will help camp for children of 6 to 12 y.o. Maintenance of roads includes thinning and cleaning sidewalks Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in the office of Kanda Shrine. Facilities and Fixtures: There is no bed and a sleeping bag is necessary. There are a washer, a kitchen, and a shower room. Library is nearby where you can use Internet and there is also a small shop. Meals: Volunteers will be expected to cook by themselves. Food stuff will be provided. What to bring: Please bring a sleeping bag, clothing suitable for activities, such as long sleeved items, pants, a hat/cap, cotton gloves, and sneakers which can be worn for outdoor work. Towels and a water bottle/canteen are necessary. Sandals and short pants are not appropriate for the work. If you love fishing, please bring fishing tackle. Note: Basic Japanese knowledge would be helpful for the communication with the villagers. Location: Higashi Shirakawa mura is located in the central part of Japan, near the Hida Mountains which are very famous for its beautiful scenery among climbers and tourists. Also volunteers may have a chance to visit ʺShirakawagoʺ which is newly registered to The World Heritage. This is the place for nature lovers! Remarks: Work planned in this program consists of a lot of outdoor work in the forest. Please be prepared for the outdoor work in terms of clothing and belongings. Occasionally volunteers have to do their work outside under burning sun. A hat/cap, water bottle and repellent are also useful. Please put high priority on the work. You will work five hours a day, five days a week. Please also be reminded that villagers are not familiar with foreign people and you may be looked at with curiosity. Schedule is fixed including sight seeing, free time and holidays.

10 CIEEJ10. Shizenkan Sahimel / SHIMANE 3 rd 16 th August CULT/ECO Volunteers: 3 Host Organization: The Shimane Nature Museum of Mt.Sanbe ( Sahimel ) Airport : Kansai International Airport/Iwami Airport Terminal: JR Oda shi Station or Oda station. Background: Shimane International Center was established in order to promote international exchange, cooperation and deepen interchange with many foreign countries in Shimane Pref. Since then this center conducts many projects, such as Japanese guidance to foreign residents, accepting foreign students and offering the place of interchange for citizens and foreigners. Volunteers will work for Nature museum which Center is running. Work: Volunteers will help indoor and outdoor works in the Nature Museum. Examples are as follows. Arranging (classifying) samples, showing visitors exhibits and translating signs or brochures of the museum. Supporting special exhibits and astronomical observation (an example of 2010) Supporting interchange events with visitors (mainly young children and elementary school students) Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in National Sanbe youth friendship center, next to the museum. Facilities and Fixtures: Beddings will be provided. There are a washer, a shower room and a lavatory. Public phone is available nearby. Meals: Breakfast and dinner will be provided in the dining room. For lunch, lunch box will be provided. What to bring: Volunteers need to bring clothes which are suitable for the work such as T shirts, pants, sneakers. It will be cold in the mornings and evenings. So please bring long sleeved items. A hat/cap for outdoor work, toiletries, towels, soaps and shampoo are necessary. Note: One night home stay will be planned. Location: Shimane Pref. is located in the west of main land and facing Japanese sea. Endowed with a true abundance of nature, Shimaneʹs expression changes gracefully with the seasons. And Oda shi which Nature museum lies has 40,000 populations. Oda shi is located in a place of 600 meters above sea level and surrounded by beautiful nature. Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, a World Heritage site, is about 40 minutes away by car. From JR Oda shi station, it will take 60 min by bus, approximately 2,000 JPY/round trips, to get to the Nature Museum. For one day sightseeing, you may need about 5,000 JPY.

11 Remarks: Japanese skill (Beginners level, ability to understand everyday conversation) would be required for the work. You are expected to help and show visitors exhibits. Since there are various duties in Sahimel, volunteers who have interests in many filed and spirits of challenge are desirable. Volunteers who love nature and want to experience something different from Japanese city life are also welcome. CIEEJ16. Fureai no mori /Yamaguchi 19 th 30 th August AGRI/ENVI/KIDS Volunteers: 12 Host Organization: Interaction Forest Nandemo Kobo Airport: Yamaguchi Ube Airport Terminal: JR Tokuyama Station Background: Host organization is offering outdoor activities, such as making wood work craft, basket wares, wooden house and painting for both adult and children in abundant nature. All staffs in organization are volunteers and working based on a concept Forest brings up a person, A person brings up forest. During summer, many children and families visit this place and experience various outdoor activities. Work: This program consists of 3 sections, 1: Helping activities for three generations, 2: Internationlal exchange with local students, 3: Maintenance of the Fureai no mori, the facilities. As for 1: Helping activities for children, families and elders such as cooking( Pizza, udon and noodles and so on), craft and plays etc. Age of participants will be 5 80 y.o. (Planned for three to four days) As for 2: International exchange with local students: Please introduce your country. The local people will introduce about the area and traditional culture. Volunteers will participate in Japanese traditional summer events, Matsuri, with students. (Planned for two days) As for 3: Maintenance of Fureai no mori (mori means forest in English): Volunteers will help maintenance of forest park and some facilities. (Planned for one to two days) Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in the facilities. Facilities and Fixtures: A sleeping bag is necessary. There are a washer, a kitchen, a lavatory and a bathroom. Public phone and a small shop are nearby. Meals: Volunteers will be cooking by themselves. The cost of food stuff will be provided and volunteers are asked to go to the store.

12 What to bring: Clothing need to be suitable for outdoor activities. Slippers and sandals are prohibited during outdoor work. Please bring swimwear or something you can play in the river. Location: Shunan city is located in south eastern part of Yamaguchi Pref. surrounded beautiful Seto Inland sea and hillside. It will take 4 and a half hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen or 1 and a half hours from Yamaguchi Ube Airport. Remarks: Volunteers need to be able to cook and to voluntary act. Who are open minded and want to learn Japan through helping people and communicating with people are welcomed!
