2 2 Accommodatin Guide 2017 NEDBANK TOUR DE TULI ACCOMMODATION GUIDE 2017 This year we celebrate our 10th year of riding through the Greater Transfontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) of Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa and 13 years of riding the Tour. We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone with our cyclists and are proud of the wonderful relationships that we have formed in these areas as a result of the Nedbank Tour de Tuli. Each year our cyclists are privileged to take part in one of the most unique mountain bike events in the world, one that takes them along game paths in remote, beautiful wilderness areas. Here we come together to breathe the fresh air of the wild, create amazing friendships between people from many walks of life all while contributing to a truly worthy cause. This booklet contains information on various accommodation options for cyclists and their families and friends. This guide will help you with accommodation suggestions prior to the Tour and after the event, as well as for families wishing to stay in the nearby area. 3 Botswana Accommodation The Northern Tuli Game Reserve is a wildlife conservation area protected as a wilderness of savannah, riverine forests, marshland, open plains and sandstone cliffs. It is not only a unique wilderness area with an abundance of African wildlife, but also has a rich archaeological history. Tuli is situated in Botswana but borders both South Africa to the south and Zimbabwe to the east. The Reserve is within easy access of Johannesburg by both car and air. Tuli is just over 500 km from Johannesburg and is accessed on good tar roads via Polokwane in Limpopo Province. It is just under two hours drive from Polokwane. Mashatu Game Reserve Mashatu comprises hectares in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve and comprises cycling for most of days 1, 2 and 3 of the 2017 Nedbank Tour de Tuli. Mashatu is the home of Cycle Mashatu, mountain biking safaris through an African savannah where elephant are a daily sighting. Mashatu is becoming world renowned for its photographic experience which includes underground hides, excellent Kalahari light for photography and unhindered views of the wildlife in varied and interesting landscapes. Mashatu Lodge Mashatu Lodge (Main Camp) is an oasis among the undulating and seemingly endless plains of the wild. Burning torches at the camp s entrance lure safari-goers home where they experience the embodiment of sublime hospitality. 14 luxury suites lie along the camp s perimeter and are designed to allow absolute privacy and a communion with the bush and its inhabitants. Each of the airconditioned suites is tastefully decorated with a double bed and an extra-large single bed, together with a seating area that includes a single day bed. This is an ideal camp for family travellers. Mashatu Tent Camp Mashatu Tent Camp comprises eight tents tucked under the branches of enormous trees. Each unit is mounted on a concrete platform, and has its own outdoor en-suite facilities. Instant camaraderie is a byproduct of this characteristic camp. Meal-times are held either in the open-air thatched gazebo, or in the boma overlooking a floodlit and popular waterhole. A plunge pool provides a refreshing break from the strong sunshine typical of the summer months. Please Note: Mashatu Tent Camp only takes children of 12 years and older. 4 4 Accommodatin Guide 2017 Tuli Game Reserve Hatari Camp Hatari Camp is a spectacular 10-bed lodge comprising five resplendent double rooms (including an annex with two bunk beds) with glamorous en-suite indoor and outdoor bathrooms. The main reception area comprises a lavish entrance hall, equipped kitchen, stylish indoor sitting room, extravagant outdoor sitting room and dining area. The central feature of the lodge is the superb game viewing deck overlooking the delightful Hatari Camp waterhole. The gardens are grassed and enjoy the cooling benefit of two plunge pools. Limpopo Camp Limpopo Camp is a splendid four-bedroomed lodge. The cultural entrance hall leads into an enormously, cosy reception/entertainment room comprising a warm sitting room with a fireplace and a tasteful dining area. The accommodation includes four double bedrooms with stylish antique en-suite bathrooms leading off from the central reception/entertainment area. The huge kitchen and garage facilities are detached from the elegant lodge. This irresistible camp, with its large evergreen garden and majestic swimming pool, is situated on the banks of the Limpopo River. Pride Rock Pride Rock looks out across a dramatic landscape, where a pair of black eagles can be seen nesting along the rugged cliff faces of the Limpopo River. This guesthouse, home to five exquisite suites, is situated along the riverbank of the Limpopo offering you a state-of-the-art self-catering experience. Santhata Camp Santhata consists of seven luxurious double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The entertainment area comprises a splendid sitting room and adjoining eating area. The camp has a big conference room/library, an office, curio shop and large fully-equipped kitchen. The evergreen garden has a pool and wooden pool-deck overlooking the Limpopo River. Tented Camp Our perfect Tented Camp has taken modern accommodation to the next level and has room for a total of eight lucky guests. The units comprise four dreamy bedrooms with spacious en-suite bathrooms with inside and outdoor showers. Each unit has its own unique wooden balcony overlooking the mountainside. The central reception/entertainment area includes a relaxing living room and artistic dining area, and adjacent kitchen. A large wooden deck at the front of the reception/entertainment area sits on the edge of a ravine and provides magnificent views to the west of the reserve. The camp has a romantic swimming pool and a fantastic separate boma area. 5 Tuli Safari Lodge Between Tuli s time-sculpted kopjes and the legendary Limpopo River lies a most welcome surprise: Tuli Safari Lodge. A verdant oasis in a ruggedly beautiful wilderness. The yin to Tuli s yang. Just 10 elegant suites nestle in peaceful, spacious gardens shaded by ancient trees. All the rooms are air-conditioned, with comfortable beds, a drinks fridge, tea and coffee facilities and full en-suite bathroom. This four star establishment boasts delicious meals, with entertainment for everyone. Kuduland Kuduland is situated under an umbrella of fever trees along the bank of the Limpopo River. The camp has six air-conditioned chalets accommodating two people each, and five barracks that sleep four people each. A stunning venue for families to escape from the city buzz or simply for an overnight stop. A family-run operation, the bush-crazy Bristows offer a flexible, personally-designed wildlife/birding/scenic/dinosaur/san rock art package to suit most pockets and interests. The camp sleeps a maximum of eight in four separate, comfortable and well-appointed chalets with hot and cold running water, and is available on an exclusive basis. 7 South Africa Accommodation Mapungubwe National Park Located at the confluence of the mighty Shashe and Limpopo Rivers, this envisaged Transfrontier Park embracing South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe gives tangible proof by way of the rich fossil deposits, Bushman rock art and gold artefacts of ancient civilisations that once flourished here. Accommodation is varied and South African National Parks (SANParks) offers cottages, campsites and tented camps. Access to a vehicle is necessary to explore the area. There are no catering options available so all accommodation is based on a self-catering basis. Mapungubwe is the final destination and stopover for cyclists on the Nedbank Tour de Tuli. Mogalakwena River Lodge Experience the tranquillity of the River Lodge safari camp and enjoy nature s splendour on the banks of the Mogalakwena River. The main lodge consists of four en-suite bedrooms, dining and open lounge areas, an infinity swimming pool and an upper viewing deck. Share experiences at the bar or around the fire at the lapa.
