8 A SAFARI LIKE NO OTHER Make your african dream a reality Kwandwe is blessed with a remarkable diversity of animals and game that roam these vast plains, including the Big Five and a host of predators and smaller animals. Game-viewing opportunities abound, however it is our specialist safari experiences that really set us apart. Boat-based game-viewing allows you to enjoy the splendour of Kwandwe from the water, or get up close and personal with white and black rhino, buffalo and even elephant as you accompany our expert rangers on a guided Big Game Walk. Sign up for our Rhino Monitoring Safari, a 3-4 day Rhino darting, capture and research safari, or a night-drive to view our nocturnal predators in action. 11 GREAT FISH RIVER LODGE A sense of space Set along the fertile green banks of the river after which it is named, our founding lodge is designed with your peace and comfort in mind, with nine private glass-and-thatch suites that overlook the lush riverine valley below. Featuring a classic-contemporary style of understated elegance and earthy tones, Great Fish River Lodge is all about tranquillity and solitude. Watch majestic kudu meander down to the river from the Lodge s expansive viewing decks, or observe playful Cape clawless otters swimming in the cool waters from the comfort of your private balcony and plunge pool.

If food is your passion, you need not sit by and be an idle spectator. Some of our Lodges allow interested guests to participate in the preparation of meals, under the watchful and supportive eye of one of our talented culinary experts. Whether you choose to enjoy your meals under the spectacular African sky, in the comfort of your room, as a picnic out on the Reserve or in one of the many social dining spaces, we offer a myriad of options to suit all tastes.

20 MELTON MANOR Make yourself at home With sweeping views over the Great Fish River to the Afro-montane forests, Melton Manor is a contemporary frontier farmhouse with a modern touch. This sole-use safari villa, where the smallest detail of your stay is planned according to your specific wishes, is tailormade for family holidays or parties of friends. The interiors harmoniously combine traditional mid-20th century furniture with the latest in South African design. High ceilings and expansive verandas create a sense of space, while deep couches, cosy fireplaces and a welcoming, lived-in aesthetic invite you to kick back, relax and simply make yourself at home. When the mood takes you, your private safari vehicle stands at the ready to explore the spectacular wildlife and unmatched scenery of Kwandwe at your leisure.

23 UPLANDS HOMESTEAD Luxury, african style Set in a remote and tranquil valley and available for the sole use of families and parties of up to six, this elegant 1905 farmhouse has been lovingly restored to retain all the charm and grace of yesteryear without losing any of its history, warmth and ambience. Uplands offers a private safari experience, complete with a full contingent of friendly staff and a dedicated chef and butler to take care of your every whim. There is also a full size swimming pool and gazebo set amongst rolling lawns, surrounded on all sides by sweeping slopes decorated with hundreds of aloes. A true Out of Africa experience.

26 CONSERVATION In harmony with nature The meaning of Kwandwe in isixhosa is Place of the Blue Crane, and the Reserve is the proud home to a population of these rare, highly endangered national birds. Thousands of animals including lion, black and white rhino, buffalo, elephant and cheetah roam these expansive plains, which have been restored to their former glory through decades of careful conservation practice. The Reserve is sanctuary to other threatened species including the Knysna woodpecker, Cape grysbok, black wildebeest, crowned eagle and black-footed cat. Numerous best-practice conservation projects are undertaken at Kwandwe, including an exciting rhino conservation programme aimed at ensuring the preservation of this endangered species. Under the supervision of experts, guests can assist with anti-poaching tasks including the tracking, darting and notching of these magnificent animals.

29 COMMUNITY Creating positive and lasting change The rural communities of the Eastern Cape are some of the poorest in South Africa. Our social development initiative, the Angus Gillis Foundation, is an independent, non-profit, charitable trust established in 2002 that currently invests in the development of nine rural communities, two of which are located within the Kwandwe Reserve. The Foundation focuses on facilitating an asset-based approach to development, in which community participation holds the key to success. Energy and resources are focused on improving the lives of people living in poverty stricken rural areas by providing the training, resources and support needed to create positive and lasting change.

32 FOR THE KIDS A lifetime of memories Kwandwe is an ideal and stimulating location for children. Not only are there a host of tailor-made activities within the reserve designed to keep little ones enthralled and entertained for hours, but our malaria-free status makes this a safe experience for kids. Kids truly are a big focus for us at Kwandwe. Whether it s poo safaris with the ranger, fishing trips, treasure hunts, special game drives or baking, young ones will remember their African adventure forever. Our sole-use lodges (Uplands and Melton) are ideal family options, offering all the privacy and flexibility a family may need to enjoy the holiday of a lifetime.

36 USEFUL INFORMATION ACCOMMODATION: Kwandwe s 4 lodges are situated in private corners of the reserve - Great Fish River Lodge (9 suites), Ecca Lodge (6 suites), Melton Manor (sole-use only with 4 suites) and Uplands Homestead (sole-use only with 3 suites). CHILDREN: All ages are welcome (ages 12+ at Great Fish River Lodge). ELECTRICITY: All camps are supplied with electricity at 220v, a South African adaptor will be needed CREDIT CARDS: Visa Cards, Master Cards & American Express accepted. DISABLED ACCESS: Yes with assistance (except Great River Fish Lodge). GETTING THERE Nearest airports: Port Elizabeth 160km/ 100 miles (+-1 hour 45 minutes) or East London 185km/ 115 miles (+-2 hours). The Reserve s airstrip is at Reception. There are daily scheduled flights from both Johannesburg and Cape Town International Airports to Port Elizabeth Airport. Land transfers, a daily scheduled flight or a private charter flight from Port Elizabeth airport to Kwandwe are available (the Reserve has a private airstrip).
