1 Dear Riverstone Grade 8 Parents, Rafting down the historical and famous Salmon River is an opportunity of a lifetime for many. It is so wonderful to have such a great river in our backyard, and what a great experience for an 8 th grader to experience it with their peers. This is one of our longest fall trips; we will be gone from Sunday, September 9, to Friday, September 14. This year, we will continue our partnership with Mackay Wilderness River Trips. They do an exceptional job of providing an unforgettable river experience. They have been running school trips in Idaho for many years now and they have developed an extensive curriculum geared towards teaching students about Idaho history, river ecology, and conservation, making the trip not only a wonderful opportunity to develop skills, but to also teach students about the state they call home. Mackay provides transportation, guides, gear, and food, and we are grateful for the professionalism they show each year. The Main Salmon is referred to many in river-running circles as the perfect family river trip. The river itself is classified as a mellow Class III, pool-drop, river; large, slow pools, which make for great swimming and easy recoveries, follow the rapids. It has great big beaches for camping, cooking, and evening gatherings. Frequent jet boats provide access to outside assistance if needed. Mackay will provide a safe and fun environment for all, and parents and guardians should be assured this is a great trip for 8 th graders. Students will continue to improve upon their outdoor skills as they will move camp every morning down the river, setting up and taking down tents and packing their packs. Later in the year, these skills will come in handy along the Hells Canyon backpacking trip as they do not have the luxury of boats or vans carrying their gear, and they will have to carry it on their back. Please review the following information regarding what to expect and what to bring. With the trip being on water, non-cotton clothing will be essential. If you have any additional questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact Derek Wright, Outdoor Education Coordinator, dwright@riverstoneschool.org. Please fill out 2 additional forms you will find attached to this document. One is a participant agreement for Mackay Wilderness River Trips, and the other is a health update and permission slip. Both need to be completed and returned to Derek Wright, no later than Tuesday, September 4, Sincerely, Derek Wright Outdoor Education Coordinator

Sleeping pad (closed-cell foam or inflatable style work great) 1-liter water bottle sunglasses headlamp (make sure batteries work, and bring extra) personal toiletries (toothbrush/paste, sunscreen, lip balm, lotion, personal medications) Optional waterproof camera neoprene booties book packable fishing rod *Avoid Cotton Fabrics: When it gets wet, cotton is a very poor insulator and can significantly accelerate the onset of hypothermia. Additionally, wicking base layers, which transport moisture away from the body, can help the body stay cool in hot weather. **Mackay River Guides will provide a waterproof bag for storing your students equipment, please have all your gear that you will not be wearing on the river to fit into a duffle bag in order to slip it into the bigger waterproof bag. Locations: Mackay River Guides: Salmon River, Idaho Riggins, Idaho Additional Forms: Please see the additional participant agreement form for Mackay River Trips. Please return this to Derek Wright in the middle school building no later than September 4.. This must be signed by a parent or guardian.

6 PACKING LIST MACKAY WILDERNESS RIVER TRIPS mackayriver.com (208) FAX (208) N 17th Street Boise, ID All guests receive a Mackay River duffle and a waterproof day bag for their clothes and personal items at the orientation meeting the night before the trip. Please limit your items to 40 pounds. MACKAY WILDERNESS RIVER TRIPS PROVIDES reshly laundered sleeping bag and pillow f inflating sleeping pad rd approved life jackets ables and chairs rst aid supplies king and eating utensils f ice for your beverages YOU SHOULD BRING Quick Drying T shirts - for "wicking" and fast drying. You should only need 1 for every two to three days. Quick Drying shorts pack. More than any other piece of clothing, you will wear your shorts the most. Two or three pairs should be plenty. Swimsuits - The summer temperatures on the river will range from 75 degrees to 95 degrees during the day. A swimsuit will come in handy f p, or for soaking in the hot springs. Raingear atory. W mountain showers thr ive suit will not do the job. Your raingear should have jacket, pants and hood. If the temperatures drop, raingear can be worn over your fleece to keep you warm and dry. Fleece jackets and pants - Polar Fleece is designed with rafting in mind. This wonderful fa kly and stays warm even when wet. By layering your clothing (swimsuit, shorts, T'shirt, polar fleece and raingear) you are assured of complete comfort no matter what mother nature brings. Wool shirt or sweater reat for around the campfire in the cool evenings or for layering over if you do not have fleece. Shoes - You will need two pairs of shoes - a pair that can be wet and another that will be dry for camp. On the raft your feet will be wet most the day. Either a canvas tennis shoe, river sandals with a secure heel, or neoprene booties with soles will work best. At camp a dry pair of tennis shoes is perfect. Hiking boots are not necessary and may be difficult to pack (unless they are very lightweight). Wool socks or wetsocks - The water temperature can be around 55 degrees during June. Your feet are in and out of the water most the day If your feet have a tendency to get cold we recommend wetsocks to ensure your feet remain warm and comfortable. For those of you whose feet do not have a tendency to get really cold, wool socks will more than likely do the job. Sun screen - The weather can be very hot in the summer months, so a waterproof sun screen will help protect you from burning and the sun's harmful rays. Towel - You will need a towel for showering and the hot springs. One per person is plenty. Flashlight - A small lightweight flashlight is good to have for any night walks to the latrine. Hats - During June a warm wool or fleece hat will help keep the warmth in. During the warmer summer months a hat with a bill will keep the sun off your face. Gloves - During June wool gloves or neoprene gloves will keep your hands warm. Plastic water bottle with a secure lid - We will give you a river mug in your guest package for all the beverages we serve, but your river mug is not spill proof. For on the raft or hiking a water bottle is handy. Sunglasses with a security strap - Polarized lenses will protect your eyes from the sun's rays. Toiletry Items - Feel free to bring the kinds of soaps you use at home. Our guides will instruct you on where to be when you use these products so we do not pollute this wonderful river. Bring the toiletries you need for your adventure and place them in a plastic bag to protect your other items from getting soiled if they should leak. A type of wet wipe will also come in handy. Fishing gear & tackle rovided. If you plan on fishing, you will need to bring y and flies. It is recommended that your rod and reel are in a hard ffice if you ha regarding what to bring or ha at flies or lures will work best. Camera and plenty of film - You will want to bring your camera or video camera to capture your adventure. We give you a dry bag to protect y rom water damage. If you are concerned about damaging your camera, we recommend the disposable waterproof cameras. Mackay Wilderness River Trips prides itself on our outstanding crew. If you feel the service they provide has been outstanding, you may wish to leave a gratuity. The standard gratuity is 15% of your trip price and can be left in cash, personal check, or on your credit card. During June and early July we require our guests to wear wetsuits. For a cleaning fee of $30.00 we can supply you with a Farmer John wetsuit with paddling jacket. Items in red are necessary for June and September trips. Some of the items may come in handy during summer months, too. If you have any questions, please let is know. R-0107
