PAGE 2 Introduction Showcasing one of Italy s most breath-taking landscapes, the Amalfi Coast is a beautiful region of wild mountains dramatically plunging into the sea. Romantic and striking, this incredible region is excellent for a walking and cultural holiday with all the magic of Italy. Here you ll experience one of the most stunning coastlines in the world complete with a wonderful labyrinth of footpaths, charming villages, rustic olive groves, zesty lemon orchards and picture-postcard towns clinging to terraced cliffs. On KE s centre-based holiday you ll stay in a traditional family-run hotel with a superb panoramic terrace and tasty local cuisine. We ve included an excellent variety of walks, plus time to explore amazing Amalfi and colourful Ravello. A day of sightseeing includes the humbling UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pompeii and towering volcanic giant of Vesuvius, before we finish the holiday in style with one of the world s best hikes, the exhilarating Walk of the Gods to Positano. If you re looking for an Italian walking holiday bursting with traditional flavours and vibrant colours, then this is the perfect choice. Is this holiday for you? This lovely centre-based walking holiday includes all the highlights of the Amalfi Coast nestled in a beautiful corner of southern Italy. The week includes 4 leisurely paced day walks, which on a few occasions descend to the sea. The walks are a maximum of five hours on good footpaths and trails. The ascent of Vesuvius is a 2 hour round trip and easy hike on a zig-zag volcanic trail whilst the visit to Pompeii includes enough time explore the ruins at your own pace. While there is sufficient walking on each day to satisfy regular hikers, it is intended that this should be a relaxing holiday with a gentle pace and plenty of time to enjoy the towns and villages along the way plus the incredible views. Being centre-based means there is the opportunity to have a day off walking if you so wish. A mid-week free day gives you the opportunity to enjoy the local area or explore afield to the isle of Capri or ancient site of Herculaneum. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the group hotel in Agerola. A single transfer from Naples Airport is provided. The group will meet at Naples Airport and join a single timed transfer from Naples Airport to the group hotel in Agerola. Fondly referred to as Switzerland in miniature, Agerola is nestled in the heart of the Sorrento Peninsula and surrounded by a wonderful mountainous landscape. The hotel is family run with a wonderful terrace to sit and soak up the views over a pre-dinner drink. Rich in chestnut forest, meadows, orchards and stunning views of the Amalfi Coast, it's a great base for the week. The area gets its name from the Latin word Ager, meaning terraced fields and even today, the wonderful terracing that overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea resembles a mountainous patchwork quilt. It was from these forests that the wealthy Maritime Republic of Amalfi collected wood for its ships. This whole area has early-roman origins and after the devastating earthquake of 79 AC which destroyed Herculaneum and Pompeii, the area continued to grow in wealth. Once known for its excellent ceramic workers, the village was once a breeding centre for silkworms. Before dinner why not try a traditional Aperol Spritz? This famous pre-dinner drink is unmistakable in Italy, a vibrant colour which is described as "the spirit that makes people spontaneously come together and sparks nothing but good times." The aperitif is a refreshing combination of Aperol (bitter orange liqueur), Prosecco, a dash of soda and plenty of ice. An Aperol Spritz is more of an Italian institution than a drink and worth a try. MEALS D

PAGE 3 Day 2: Hike along the stunning Monte Lattari trail and enjoy a pizza making evening. After breakfast we briefly travel by bus to the start of our walk in the rural land of Agerola. The trail leads us out of the village as we follow a lovely footpath which snakes through the famed terraces of tomatoes, lemons and grapes. The Amalfi Coast is famous for its lemons which were originally grown to provide Vitamin C for sailors on long sea journeys. By the 19th century the Amalfi lemon had assumed great social and economic importance and slowly the previously unproductive rural landscape was transformed into stunning terracing. Small orchards are known as piazzas and accessed by steep staircases, which even today freshly picked lemons are transported on the shoulders of manual workers. We ascend gradually up to a superb viewpoint where we're treated to views of the coast and Isle of Capri. As we continue along old mule tracks we can enjoy some spectacular views of the Sorrentine Peninsula. This incredible landscape is truly unique with deep valleys, majestic mountains and jawdropping sea views. There are many great viewpoints along the way and we'll pick one of these for our picnic lunch. In the afternoon we'll stop to sample some locally produced Limoncello. As one of the most famous drinks in Italy, Limoncello is absolutely delicious and always served chilled. This evening in the hotel we'll see how traditional Italian pizzas are made and try our hand at it ourselves. With a genuine Italian pizza, the crust is traditionally thin, light and fluffy after being hand-stretched and cooked at an extremely high temperature. Tomato sauce is usually made from local tomatoes grown in rich Italian soil and combined with a variety of herbs. Toppings are simple but you're sure to find the famous gooey buffalo mozzarella. Finish with a delicate drizzle of olive oil and you have sheer perfection! DESCENT 650M ASCENT 650M TIME 5 HOURS HOURS DISTANCE 10KM MEALS BLD Day 3: A fantastic day visiting UNESCO World Heritage Pompeii and Vesuvius. We start the day by transferring to Pompeii where we'll visit one of the world's most famed towns. The story of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is humbling and even today it's a wonderfully atmospheric place to wander. Today the ancient site of Pompeii is like a ghostly open book which lay buried for 1700 years and, is one of the world's most engrossing archaeological experiences. Once home to over 20,000 people, the city was thriving until the devastating explosion and it wasn't until 1748 when architect Domenico Fontana stumbled across the ruins whilst digging a canal that the excavation started. Pompeii is remarkably well-preserved, where you can walk down Roman streets and discover old houses, villas full of colourful frescos, temples, shops, cafes and amphitheatres. The best way to enjoy the site is to stroll through the city away from the guided groups, where you'll find pockets of solitude, wild flowers and birds singing as the towering giant of Vesuvius dominates the horizon. In the afternoon we head to Mount Vesuvius and enjoy a hike to the crater of this sleeping giant. As the only active volcano on mainland Europe, Vesuvius is best known because of the eruption in A.D. 79 that destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. However the volcano has erupted more than 50 times and this afternoon we'll leave the vegetation behind and walk up a series of switchbacks as we make our way towards the crater. Whilst surrounded by fantastic views over the Sorrento Peninsula and Pompeii, we'll look down into this enormous crater. Gelato is more than just Italian ice cream and is traditionally made using less butterfat but more of the ingredients we love - cream, milk and sugar. Prepared in small batches, true gelato is served at a slightly higher temperature than ice cream, hence why it appears to melt in the mouth. MEALS BD TIME 2 HOURS HOURS

PAGE 4 Day 4: The Valle delle Ferriere Nature Reserve, a moss-clad waterfall and pretty Amalfi. Today's lovely walk takes us to the pretty harbour town of Amalfi via cliff hugging villages and hamlets surrounding Agerola. We start by following lovely trails which take us to the unique reserve of Valle delle Ferriere. This lovely little pocket of nature was established in 1972 and has a very special micro climate due to its lush vegetation and warm southern wind. Along the way we'll discover rare woodland species and if we're really lucky several types of orchid. Our footpath through this magical woodland takes us to a beautiful moss clad waterfall where we can enjoy a riverside picnic lunch. In the afternoon we walk down into Amalfi passing lemon groves along the trail. On reaching this pretty town you'll have time to wander through its charming centre and the main piazza is perfect for people watching over a drink or ice cream. From afar the town looks like a cluster of white house's clinging to the rock face, and connected to each other by covered alleys and stairs. The town has a few historical buildings and is delightfully small after the majority of the old city and its inhabitants slid into the sea during an earthquake in At the centre of the main square is the beautiful Cathedral of St. Andrew, with its impressive staircase and bell-tower in Arab-Norman style. Pretty Amalfi gave its name to the coast and was once one of Four Maritime Republics of Italy which owned a trade monopoly with the East. In the past it had a population of more than 70,000, whilst today it's perfect for exploring and enjoying the charming architecture and views. DESCENT 900M ASCENT 250M TIME 5 HOURS HOURS DISTANCE 9KM MEALS BLD Day 5: A free day to enjoy the local area, take a boat to Capri or visit Herculaneum. Today is free for you to relax and enjoy the local area, take a boat trip to Capri or visit the ancient site of Herculaneum. You can always head back to Amalfi and people watch from one of the many pavement cafes. Whilst a 25min walk along the headland from Amalfi is the town of Atranti, a labyrinth of whitewashed alleys and arches with a little piazza and small beach. From the harbour of Amalfi you may wish to take a ferry to the Isle of Capri. Capri is beautiful with lovely gardens, elegant buildings and steep cliffs which rise majestically from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Here you'll find elegant villas covered with wisteria and bougainvillea and myths ranging from sirens charming seafarers, to 1950s celebrities in oval sunglasses. Remember that Capri is a popular day-trip destination so at times it can appear busy, however the location is wonderful and the island is pretty. Plus there are some excellent restaurants for a lunch-time holiday treat. If you want to explore more of Italy's history, you may wish to visit Herculaneum, the sister to Pompeii. Superbly preserved, Herculaneum was a small, wealthy coastal town and therefore very different to the more urban Pompeii. The site is smaller and more personal than Pompeii due to the arches that house some of the skeletons from the 300 people that have been excavated. Biscotti are Italian almond biscuits that are twice baked, oblong-shaped and crunchy, and are perfectly served with a drink. However, forget dipping them in coffee - a real Italian biscotti is paired with the dessert wine of Vin Santo and they make a delicious combination. MEALS B Day 6: Follow trails through the Valley of the Mills to the enchanting town of Ravello.

PAGE 5 After breakfast we start the day from Amalfi and pick up trails which take us through the wonderful Mulini Valley or Valley of the Mills. This beautiful valley is home to deserted mills which lie almost hidden from view due to the rich flora. The place has an Indiana Jones feel to it with lush vegetation and atmospheric buildings which once thrived during the 11th and 12th century. The mills, which took advantage of a nearby stream, used to grind wheat for the local inhabitants. Due to the popularity it wasn't long until a saw mill was built and a wash-house for laundering clothes. However during the 1940s, the buildings were closed down and since then they have become part of their lush habitat. It's a wonderful place to explore as we enjoy views across to Amalfi and Ravello. From the Valley of the Mills we walk to Ravello, known as the jewel of the coast. Renowned for its beautiful gardens and historical links to Virginia Wolf, DH Lawrence and Greto Garbo, the town is perched on high cliffs above Amalfi. We'll have time to stroll through this little gem, which was initially built on a settlement for the Romans as they fled from the barbarians. The town has a cathedral, a beautiful central piazza and striking sea views. DESCENT 760M ASCENT 430M TIME 5 HOURS HOURS DISTANCE 11KM MEALS BLD Day 7: Along the spectacular Walk of the Gods to the exquisite town of Positano. The grand finale to our walking week is the spectacular Walk of the Gods - a definite highlight of the holiday. After breakfast we start by hopping on the public bus for a brief journey to the hamlet Bomerano and the official start of the trail. This fabulous walk takes us along spectacular cliff top paths whilst surrounded by stunning views over the Sorrentino Peninsula. As we head through brief sections of forests, and pass vineyards which cling to the mountain, we may meet local farmers and shepherds working on this dramatic landscape. During the morning we'll also look out for peregrine falcons and kestrels which are frequently seen soaring above. As we reach Nocelle we'll take in the views and hear the monastery clock chiming before heading down towards the beach. In the distance we'll see the pretty pink buildings of Positano which reach after walking through fig, olive and hibiscus trees. The beautiful town of Positano is the most photogenic town on the coast and rightly so. Here we'll see pastel coloured houses tumbling down to the sea, causing a cascade of peach, pink and terracotta. We'll have time to stroll through the labyrinth of backstreets and enjoy this wonderful little place. In the afternoon we'll make our way back by ferry but please note, the ferry is dependent on sea conditions and if it is not possible to travel by ferry we'll transfer by bus. After dinner why not try a grappa? For generations, Italians have sipped this after dinner digestive and even some add a little to their morning espresso to correct it! Once considered an acquired taste, grappa now comes in all varieties. The drink still begins with the grape before other fruit is added, including cherries, pears, apricots, peaches and raspberries. DESCENT 900M ASCENT 300M TIME 5 HOURS HOURS DISTANCE 9KM MEALS BLD Day 8: Departure day. A single transfer to Naples Airport is provided.

PAGE 6 A single timed group transfer to Naples Airport is provided in the morning. If you wish to extend your stay in Naples, please contact the KE office and we can assist in booking a recommended hotel. Naples is a fascinating city, and easy to explore, plus there are regular transport connections between the city and the airport. MEALS B Holiday Information What's Included An experienced English-speaking local guide All transfers included in the land only itinerary Entrance fees at Pompei and on Mount Vesuvius Airport transfers as described All accommodation as described Meals as per the Meal Plan What's Not Included Travel insurance Tips for local staff Some meals per the Meal Plan Miscellaneous personal expenses - souvenirs and drinks etc Any activities or excursions on day 5 Airport transfers as described Meal Plan All breakfasts, 4 picnic lunches and 6 dinners are included. Food Part of the experience of any visit to Italy is the opportunity to taste its wonderful cuisine. The Amalfi region traditionally has a 'Mediterranean' diet, rich in vegetables, pasta, fish and olive oil which latterly has come to be equated with longevity. The soil here is very rich, probably because of Vesuvius, and everywhere we go we will see an abundance of tomatoes, zucchinis, chilli and basil, terraces of grapes, and orchards of lemons, apples, and chestnuts. It is hardly surprising that the Amalfi coast has some of the best cuisine in the world. Breakfast in Italy is traditionally continental in style with bread, pastries or cakes, yoghurt, jam and honey served with tea or coffee. Alongside the food, Italian wine is excellent and an important part of any meal! Italy is also famous for its aperitifs, from chilled prosecco to campari, vermouth and cinzano all served over ice. Don't forget the zesty local limoncello and the famous after dinner fiery grappas! Joining Arrangements & Transfers On day one of the land only itinerary there is a single timed transfer at around 10:30am from the airport in Naples to the group hotel in Agerola. A KE representative will meet the group in the arrivals hall to organise this transfer. Any clients who are arriving earlier than this and wish to join the transfer should meet the KE Representative in the arrivals hall at 10:30am.

PAGE 7 If you are arriving later please contact the KE office and we can help organise a private transfer for you. Taxi's are readily available from outside the airport and will cost approximately one way. At the end of your holiday on day 8, there is a single timed transfer from Agerola to Naples airport. This will be arriving at Naples airport at approximately If your onward travel arrangements do not allow you to take advantage of this transfer then please contact the office. Accommodation During this holiday, the group will spend 7 nights in a family run hotel in Agerola which has a restaurant specialising in local cuisine, a welcoming bar and garden. The hotel has a lovely location and wonderful panoramic terrace with spectacular views of the sea and surrounding mountains. The terrace is a great place to sit in the evening and enjoy a pre-dinner drink after a day of walking or sightseeing. Staying in rural Agerola provides a wonderful insight into a more traditional side of the Amalfi Coast, which has kept its proud culture and typical local dishes. Accommodation is based on twin sharing and rooms are en-suite. If you are a solo traveller you'll be paired up with another solo traveller of the same sex. A limited number of single rooms are available for a supplement, please contact the KE office for prices and availability. Spending Money Approximately should cover all miscellaneous personal expenditure, the non-included meals and activities on your free day as well as reasonable tips for the local staff. You can withdraw cash (euros only) from ATM's in Naples and Agerola. If you intend to travel with cash, you should take this in the form of euros or euro travellers cheques. Guidance On Tipping Tips do not form part of the wages of local staff but they are very much appreciated. It is important to remember that tipping is voluntary and should be dependent on good service. It is best if the tip is given at the end of the trip by the group as a whole. We recommend that each group member contributes around to a group pool and that tips are then distributed between the guide and other support staff as the group feels is appropriate. It is a good idea also to have small change for other tips such as in restaurants or for porters carrying your bags at hotels.
