Nestled between Umbria and Liguria and located in Central Italy, Tuscany is home to the rugged Apennine Mountains and the charming region of Chianti alongside some of the most beautiful towns in the world. Conjouring up images of elegant piazzas, charming bridges, bustling pavement cafes and striking cathedrals, Florence, Sienna and San Gimingnano offer an opportunity to experience medieval Italy. This walking holiday starts in the Tuscan gem of Florence, which we approach on foot from the hill-top town of Fiesole. With its romantic bridges, domed cathedral and historical links to the Renaissance era, Florence is living art and a beautiful start to the holiday. After Florence we spend 3 days walking the charming Chianti Hills and stay in a traditional agrotourismo. This world famous wine region is the epitome of a Tuscan landscape and most importantly, home to excellent red wine! Next it s captivating Sienna, home of the Palio horse race and beautiful burnt Sienna coloured architecture. No holiday to Tuscany would be complete without the hill-top gem of San Gimignano. Surrounded by towering 13th Century walls and housing 17 medieval towers, San Gimignano is the perfect finale to the holiday. If you are looking for an easy walking holiday which includes the very best Italian cities and easy walks through an alluring Tuscan landscape, then this is the perfect choice! Looking For A Two Week Holiday? Fancy the ultimate Italian walking and food experience? For a complete centre-based Italian experience, why not combine this holiday with Footpaths and Flavours of Liguria or Wild Tuscany. This holiday is designed to include a variety of easy walks and active sightseeing in the magnificent towns of Tuscany and the rolling Chianti Hills. There are no technical sections on the walks and this holiday is suitable for anyone who is looking for an active way to explore towns and cities alongside spending some time walking in a beautiful rural part of Tuscany. Each day there will be some free time for sightseeing and exploring at leisure. On the walks you ll only need to carry a small day pack. This walking holiday is suitable for regular weekend hikers looking for an easy walking holiday in a beautiful part of Italy Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the group hotel in Florence. A single transfer from Pisa Airport is provided. The group will meet at Pisa Airport and a single timed transfer to the group hotel in Florence is included. There are a number of scheduled and low cost airlines flying into Pisa therefore the transfer will depart Pisa Airport at approximately 14.30pm. If you are arriving on an early morning flight and wish to join the transfer but see a little of Pisa first, the airport has a left luggage facility provided by the information office. You can leave your luggage at the office every day, including holidays, from 9 am to 7 pm and collect it from 8 am to 8 pm. The daily charge for each piece of luggage is 7 EURO. Taxis can be picked up outside the terminal and cost between 6 and 10 EURO, depending on the time of day or it takes an hour to walk to the main sites. If you would like to visit the famous "Square of Miracles" including the Leaning Tower, Bapistry, Camposanto and Cathedral, the buildings are spectaular and great for photos. The transfer from Pisa Airport to Florence takes approximately 1 hour and after checking in at the hotel, the group will meet up and head out for dinner.

PAGE 3 HOTEL Day 2: Morning exploring Fiesole before hiking back to Florence through rollings hills. This morning after breakfast we take a short public bus ride (8kms) to the beautiful town of Fiesole. Largely unknown, this hill top gem is full of ancient, Etruscan surprises including the remains of Roman baths, an amphitheatre and some spectacular old town walls. Fiesole is not only famed for its wonderful architecture, but also spectacular views over the Arno valley, Florence and the pretty Chianti hills. After exploring Fiesole, we head back to Florence the "City of Lights" on foot and will spend the rest of the day walking and exploring this incredible city. Florence has a rich variety of sights but we'll focus on the historical centre and start with the Piazza del Duomo. This breath-taking square is home to the incredible Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral, a 7th century Gothic masterpiece and the crowning glory of Florence (free entrance). After the Piazza del Duomo, no visit to Florence would be complete without a stroll through Piazza della Signoria with its incredible fountains and beautiful statues. Finally we head to Ponte Vecchio, the symbol of the city and one of Florence's most famous landmarks. Late afternoon we may walk up to the Piazzale Michelangelo which offers an incredible view over the city. After breakfast we take an early transfer to the pretty town of Greve in Chianti. Located only 30kms from Florence and the start of Chianti country, Greve is an attractive little place with a lovely piazza with lovely covered walkways and a neo-renaissance style town hall. This is the centre of Chianti country, a Tuscan landscape of rolling hills dotted with vineyards, olive trees and the classic Tuscan Cyprus tree. This whole area is famous for its historical links to the ancient "Florentine Military League of Chianti" the Galo Nero or Black Rooster and is now famed for producing the best Chianti in the world. After leaving Greve we walk through beautiful forest on trails that are soft underfoot and ascend gradually to the highest point in the area Monte San Michele (892m). The whole of this area is a nature reserve and we stroll through the hamlets of Caselle and Rugliana before reaching our accommodation for the night, a traditional Tuscan farmhouse surrounded by woodland. A pretty fortified village, perched up on a hill and known as "castello," Castello di Volpaia is famed by its links to the family della Volpia, an Italian family of wellknown clock makers. Occupied as early as the 11th century, the hamlet has a lovely display of Tuscan architecture and a hilltop location in the middle of the Chianti countryside. After exploring Volpaia, we'll leave the village and follow a trail which is soft underfoot and lined with cypress trees, vineyards and olive groves. Along the route we'll visit the Romanesque Abbey of Santa Maria Novella and its olive trees before we arrive in the hamlet of Radda-in- Chianti where we overnight. Radda in Chianti is a Tuscan village with a reputation for its excellent wines.

PAGE 4 Surrounded by extensive vineyards and located between two valleys this is the perfect location for our final overnight in the Chianti region. This morning we'll take our final hike through the Chianti hills before leaving for Sienna in the afternoon. After breakfast we leave Radda in Chianti and walk along trails that are soft underfoot. Our footpath snakes through the rolling countryside from hamlet to hamlet and along the way we'll pass the impressive Villa Vistarenni, a beautiful building that dominates the landscape. Dating from the 17th Century and now a hotel, this amazing building is surrounded by an impressive vineyard and beautiful grounds. Our next highlight is the beautiful hamlet of Vertine. This pretty village is surrounded by magnificent walls which house a castle and church. Vertine really is like stepping back in time and a true medieval gem on the Chianti landscape. Finally we arrive in Gaiole and the end of our walking journey in Chiani. This charming little place is a lovely end to our walk and we'll have time to explore its triangular town square and interesting church with an unfinished façade. From Gaiole we'll take the public bus (40mins) to Sienna, where after checking-in at your hotel, we'll head out into this magnificent city and view it by night. HOTEL ASCENT 250M MEALS B DESCENT 250M TIME 4 HOURS WALKING HOURS Day 6: Morning guided sightseeing and walking tour of Sienna. Afternoon at leisure. There is very little that can be said to prepare you for the beauty of Sienna. World famous for its exciting horse race "the palio" and home to some of the most spectacular Gothic architecture in the world, Sienna is a wonderful place to explore on foot and was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in The city's most important site is the Piazza del Campo, home to the palio and the heart of Sienna. Originally an old market square and paved in 1349 with the famous red burnt Sienna brick and is split into nine sections representing the 9 "Noveschi" or divisions who originally governed Sienna during , which was seen as the height of its medieval splendour. After the piazza the city has an abundance of sights dominated by the striking cathedral "Duomo," and this morning we'll enjoy a guided sightseeing tour on foot. After the tour the afternoon is then free for you to explore at leisure. Recommended sites are the Civic Museum and the Torre del Mangia complete with 400 steps to climb which in return offers fantastic views over the main piazza and city. Maybe revisit to the cathedral as the light changes or just a stroll to discover the abundance of wonderful alleys in Sienna's "contrades" or district. Look out for the coloured flags of each district that can be seen hanging down the atmospheric back streets. These colours are proudly worn by each rider and horse in the palio! In the evening we will re-group after our afternoon at leisure and head out for dinner. HOTEL ASCENT 680M MEALS B DESCENT 470M TIME 4-5 HOURS WALKING HOURS

PAGE 5 Day 7: A day walking and exploring the Tuscan gem of San Gimignano Today after breakfast we'll take the public bus to one of the most incredible Tuscan towns in Italy - San Gimignano. Famed for its 14 medieval towers, meandering backstreets and enchanting rural setting, San Gimingnano may be one of the most popular towns in the area but it's a fantastic place to explore and gives a genuine idea of medieval Italy. Nestled in the Tuscan hills and a Tuscan gem, only 14 towers are remaining from 72, which were originally built as a way for families to flaunt their wealth and fortune. In 1348 the plague wiped out the majority of the population but today the town is flourishing and was used as the main location for the well-known 1999 film Tea with Mussolini. San Gimignano is a great place to just wander and people watch but a must see and one of the best museums in the area is the San Gimignano del 1300 exhibition (3 Euro), a reconstruction of the original city in miniature. Work on the exhibition started in 2006 and took local artists two years to create. Each tiny house was hand-made and a visit to the exhibition is a great way to get up close and personal to the city as it was 700 years ago! The town is also famed for its magnificent "collegiate" or cathedral and Palazzo Comunale (6 Euro) home to the "torre grosa" or grand tower. After climbing the 218 steps of the tower, you'll be 54m above the town with a bird's eye view of the rooftops and surrounding countryside. San Gimignano has an abundance of pavement cafes perfect for people watching. Late afternoon we'll re-group and make our way back to Sienna and head out for final dinner together. 6 PAGE 6 Food Breakfast in Italy is traditionally continental in style with bread, pastries or cakes, yoghurt, jam and honey served with tea or coffee. During the day there will be time to visit local supermarkets to make up a picnic lunch or eat in a small restaurant. Dinner will be taken in various local restaurants as this is one of the main highlights of any holiday to Italy. Part of the Italian experience is having the opportunity to taste the wonderful cuisine and deciding how little or how much you would like to eat. Tuscany is known for its simple flavours, fresh produce and hearty, rustic country dishes. The warm air creates excellent conditions for olives, mushrooms, wine grapes, tomatoes, beans and olive oil. Crostini (bread grilled with olive oil and garlic) is a delicious snack as is panzanella (bread salad). Here tomatoes, red onions, basil, olive oil, vinegar and salt are all combined with fresh breadcumbs to create a refreshing and healthy dish. Pappa al pomodoro is a wonderful and thick soup made with rustic Tuscan bread, garlic, tomoatoes and basil. Ribollita is one of the most popular dishes in the region - cabbage, beans, onions and carrots are cooked today to make a mouthwatering stew. As in the whole of Italy, pasta is important alongside polenta. Gnocchi can also be found and is filling and delicious! Alongside food, Italian wine is excellent, especially Chianti and an important part of any meal! Italy is also famous for its aperitifs, from chilled prosecco to campari, vermouth and cinzano all served over ice. Don't forget the zesty local limoncello and the famous after dinner fiery grappas! Joining Arrangements & Transfers A single, timed group transfer from Pisa Airport to the group hotel in Florence is provided on Day 1. This transfer by private bus takes approximately 1.5 hours and will normally depart the airport around 3.00 pm. At the end of the holiday on day 8 there will be a single timed group transfer back to Pisa Airport which will depart after breakfast, arriving at the airport around am. This is to accommodate the majority of low-cost flights departing throughout the day. If you wish to fly to Florence, a taxi from the airport to the centre takes 15 minutes and costs approximately 25 Euro. Florence taxis do not need to be booked in advance and are available outside the arrival terminal. If you are arriving into Pisa early on day 1, why not visit the famous leaning tower and Square of Miracles? There are left luggage facilities at Pisa Airport (7 Euro per piece per day). Taxis are available from outside the airport and cost between 6 and 10 Euro to the centre of Pisa depending on the time of day. Alternatively it takes approximately 1 hour to walk. Make sure you ask for the "Square of Miracles" if you would like to see the famous Leaning Tower, Bapistry, Camposanto and Cathedral. Accommodation During this holiday the group will stay 5 nights in hotel rooms on a twin sharing en-suite basis. There are 2 nights in Florence and 3 in Sienna in hotels that are selected for their location and closeness to the centre. For the 2 nights in the Chianti hills we will be staying in a local "agrotourismo" or farm tourism. These are converted Tuscan farm houses which are proud of their locally produced food and traditional architecture, a real highlight of a holiday to Tuscany! Although lacking the many facilities of a hotel, their location and family-run atmosphere more than makes up for it. Single rooms are available for 5 nights of the holiday but due to the farmhouses being smaller in size, rooms for 2 nights in the Chianti Hills will be on a twin-sharing en-suite basis. If you are travelling by yourself you will be paired up with a traveller of the same sex. For the 5 hotel nights if you wish to have a single room then please contact the office on booking to check availability and pricing. Additional hotel nights are also available in Florence and Sienna, please contact the KE office for prices. Group Leader & Support Staff An experienced, professional, English-speaking local guide will lead the trip.

PAGE 7 Spending Money Approximately should cover all miscellaneous personal expenditure including light lunches and dinners in the cities, as well as a reasonable tip for the leader. You can withdraw cash (euros only) from ATM's at Pisa Airport and in Florence and Sienna. If you intend to travel with cash, you should take this in the form of euros. Guidance On Tipping Tips do not form part of the wages of local staff but they are very much appreciated. It is important to remember that tipping is voluntary and should be dependent on good service. It is best if the tip is given at the end of the trip by the group as a whole. We recommend that each group member contributes around to a group pool and that tips are then distributed between the guide and other support staff as the group feels is appropriate. It is a good idea also to have small change for other tips such as in restaurants or for porters carrying your bags at hotels. Free KE Gift We give you a free gift as a way to thank all our clients who book a KE holiday. Choose from KE T-shirts, buffs, KE trek bags* (where applicable) plus many more. Alternatively you can choose to make a 10 donation to the Juniper Trust Charity. You can make your selection in your My KE account after booking. * A trek bag is not required for this holiday. You can however purchase a KE trek bag for Delivery outside of the UK will be charged. Baggage Allowance There is no weight limit, other than that imposed by the airline. A KE trek bag may not necessarily be the best option for this trip and we recommend a bag or suitcase with wheels for this holiday. Group Size & Holiday Status For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in Dates and Prices table. General Information Passport & Visas A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required for visits to countries outside the EU. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. 8 PAGE 8 Visa Europe UK and USA passport holders do not require a visa. Electricity Supply & Plug We recommend you check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items at: Preparing For Your Holiday It makes sense to spend some time before coming on an active holiday getting some additional exercise. Whilst regular hiking in hill or back country is the best preparation however, walking, cycling and swimming are also good for developing better cardiovascular fitness and stamina. Before departure, we suggest that you try to fit in a number of daily walks in hilly countryside. It is always a good idea to spend some time walking in the footwear you are going to use on this holiday.
