2 PINGUALUIT Message from The MinisTer Baie d Ungava The Mission of Parcs Québec In 1999, the Government of Québec entrusted Société des établissements de plein air du Québec (Sépaq) with the mission of managing, protecting and developing Québec s network of national parks located above the 50th parallel. Overall, there are now 22 national parks across the different regions of Québec. A With a view to achieving harmonious marine park operated jointly by Parcs Québec (Sépaq) and Parks Canada has been added to these many KUURURJUAQ development at the cultural, social, economic natural sites of outstanding beauty. and regional levels, Parcs Québec is responsible Every day, staff members at the national parks strive to preserve these unmatched natural resources for for the conservation and development of the enjoyment of visitors from Québec and abroad. Measures are implemented on a daily basis to preserve territories that are representative of Québec s a legacy of exceptional sites for future generations. Emphasizing the benefits of nature on young people is 3 natural regions and exceptional sites, therefore important, so that the generations to come know how to make the most of Nature s wonders and due notably to their biological diversity, deal with the protection and conservation challenges to be faced in the future. while ensuring that they are accessible for educational and outdoor use. New premises will open in 2013 at Parc national du -Témiscouata, the latest addition to the Parcs All of Québec s national parks were created Québec network. The park was officially established in 2009 to protect a representative sample of natural in accordance with World Conservation Union sites at Monts Notre-Dame. Parc national du -Témiscouata features quality infrastructures in line with standards. A national park is a relatively vast national park standards. This protected area is actually renowned for its wetlands and its ornithological area: and archaeological wealth. I invite you to come and discover the park this summer. that represents one or more ecosystems A third national park north of the 50th parallel will also be created following the Pingualuit and Kuururjuaq that are moderately or not at all transformed by 2 projects. Covering 26,000 km of land, Parc national Tursujuq will allow us to achieve the 9% mark of exploitation; protected areas across Québec. Like the other two northern parks, the management and development of where animal and plant species, this new territory is entrusted to the Kativik Regional Government. geomorphological sites and habitats are of Clearly, the range of protected areas is expanding with each passing year. In your vicinity or on the road particular interest from a scientific, educational or to your summer holidays, you are sure to find a park to explore. 3 THE MUST-DOS STAND UP PADDLE Stand-up paddle is an ideal way to explore the meandering Valin River. Of Hawaiian origin, the sport combines surfing and kayaking. The board, designed for flat water, is larger and more stable than traditional surfboards, which are designed for riding waves. Standing upright on a large surfboard, you use your paddle to propel the board and keep your balance. It is easy to learn and loads of fun! NATURE CABINS Our nature cabins, set up at the heart of the park s activities, are ideal base camps for your excursions, from fishing to mountain trekking in the fall. Their small dimensions mean that, from an economic standpoint, they have lower rental rates and, from an environmental perspective, they occupy less space and leave a smaller footprint on nature. They are made of wood and fully equipped with hot water, heating, full kitchen, bathroom, and propane stove. A perfect way to discover the great outdoors and lakes of the boreal forest! NINE BLUEBERRIES TO A PIE? Should you run into a park warden during your outing, find out about the effects of altitude on the flora and fauna. Did you know that ten or so blueberry varieties are found on the summits? To the greatest pleasure of lovers of the small fruit! August 10 to the first snows at Pic de la Hutte. Peaks Hiking Trail Discover the region s first long-distance natural hiking trail on the Monts-Valin Massif: the Peaks Hiking Trail! This panoramic journey was designed to provide access to the park s peaks and summits and breathtaking vantage points. With an elevation of 755 metres and total length of 20 kilometres (one way), the Peaks Hiking Trail crosses the entire park territory. For long mountain-trekking outings, the Pionnier and Fantôme shelters are available upon reservation. Fishing by the Day Line and sinker ready, spend the day teasing brook trout. The available lakes for fishing by the day are Antoine, Culotte, and Martin-Valin Lakes. Several types of watercraft can be rented on the lakes. Only Martin-Valin Lake allows anglers to use their own crafts. Protect and Discover. 3

4 HIKING Be among the first to discover the first long-range mountain hiking trail of the Mont-Valin Massif natural region: la randonnée des Pics! (Hiking among the Peaks!) With an elevation of 755 metres over a distance of 22 kilometres (one way), the Randonnée des pics trail crosses the entire park through the Pic-de-la-Tête-de-Chien, Pic-du-Grand-Corbeau, and Pic-de-la-Hutte trails. The hikers have access to the Pionnier and Fantôme shelters, much appreciated by winter hikers. To complete this new attraction, a shuttle service and a luggage transport service are offered to those who want to combine comfort and adventure. BEWARE WHEN ENCOUNTERING A BEAR! When hiking through the forest, you may encounter a bear... Be prepared! Keep the following recommendations in mind: Stay calm and assess the situation. Try to retreat slowly and speak calmly (never run). Keep an eye on the situation but avoid making eye contact with the bear. Give the bear plenty of room so it does not feel cornered, and never go near the cubs. Try to divert its attention by throwing an object on the ground, away from you. It the bear attacks, climbing a tree can be a solution. Trying to defend oneself or to frighten the bear could make the animal turn back, but only as a desperate measure. Pic de la Tête de Chien is a destination of choice for visitors wishing to take in spectacular scenery. Unfortunately, the trail has fallen victim of its popularity. A segment of the trail runs along outcrops, areas where the vegetation and thin soil layers are highly sensitive to tramping. Repeated passage by visitors and the development of marginal ParksQuebec.com trails have led to degradation of the surroundings. We ask you to contribute to the protection of the vegetation by following the signs and staying within the bounds of the trail. We believe that with time and your cooperation the singular vegetation of the Pic de la Tête de chien will fully recover.

5 Excursions as Grand as Nature Itself! CANOEING The Valin River is an opportunity for lovers of the sport to see the mountain from a completely different point of view. 6 FISHING STORIES Special features: brook trout! For fishing enthusiasts, the brook trout (also called speckled trout) is often just a pretext to renew contact with the natural world. In many fishing areas, indigenous trout are being threatened by the introduction of new fish species such as the white sucker, which have greatly affected native trout populations by monopolizing large proportions of their food resources. Some of the region s lakes and rivers lost 30 to 70 % of their trout production capacity due to the introduction of the white sucker by an old practice: fish-bait! Using fish as bait is one of the principal causes behind the arrival of competing species, which, having multiplied, are now extremely damaging to the species that is the pride and joy of our lakes the brook trout. This problem has been avoided within the park territory and in most of the lakes of the Mont-Valin Massif. Thanks to natural obstacles such as falls and cascades, which cannot be overcome by the undesirable species, our mountain water bodies have remained allopatric (only one fish species), which means that only vigorous speckled trout inhabit our lakes, much to the satisfaction of vacationers! DAY FISHING Practice you casting style and join us for brook trout angling between May 2 and September 8, The number of catches is at all times limited to 15 per licence holder. But before you start, you must have a fishing access rights. Fishing licences and worms available at the Registration Centre. 9 Hymn TO SPRING Claude Pelletier, biologist and head of conservation and education at Parc national des Monts-Valin. Annie Deslauriers, professor-researcher Université du Québec à Chicoutimi In his hymn to spring, Félix Leclerc sang the season of blossoming, when toads croak their freedom and buds come out of hibernation. Every year, all of us are charmed by nature s awakening, the smells and the greening of our surroundings. Like nature, we also experience a kind of rebirth, year after year. But while the leaves have already adorned the lowland trees, it is a different story on the summits. At Parc national des Monts-Valin, spring comes twice! An ideal site for research The mountain climate of the Monts Valin significantly affects biological phenomena. It influences photosynthesis, growth, plant respiration, and conditions the distribution of both plant and animal species and communities. And that is the feature of the park that has interested Annie Deslauriers, professor-researcher at the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi. Indeed, her research work looks to better understand the various aspects of plant growth in a boreal environment, in relation with climate. The study of relations between environmental factors and recurrent biological events (flowering, migration, reproduction, etc.) is called phenology. At our latitudes, the day-length period (photoperiod) and temperature are the main climatic phenomena affecting plant development and, by the same token, phenology. Vegetation along a gradient of about 1,000 metres varies greatly and, to verify this, a growth monitoring project was set up in Low-altitude forests, near the Saguenay River, are indeed very different from conifer forests and from those found at park summits, near the tree limit. From measuring instruments to the tasks of park wardens Two meteorological stations have been set up: one at about 20 metres of altitude, and the other at nearly 900 metres. They automatically gather such data as air temperature, ground temperature, and wind velocity and direction. They also measure rainfall levels and snow accumulation on the ground. These data complement the growth measurements made by park wardens. During the first field visit in early May, and every visit thereafter until the end of August, microsamples are taken from the balsam firs and black spruce selected for the study. Very small sapwood the soft, whitish ligneous part just under the bark samples are taken. Laboratory analyses of these microsamples allow determining when new cells started to develop. As they accumulate, these cells form the growth rings of trees. Over the initial weeks, the work is limited to observing the growth of burgeoning buds. It is worth taking the time to watch the phenomenon as it evolves, to grasp how complex, fast, and beautiful it is! In only a few days, when ideal temperature and photoperiod conditions exist, the buds expand and then explode to reveal the outlines of leaves. And within a week, the leaves reach their maximum lengths. Using a Vernier scale, the growth of leaves is monitored weekly. Very interesting initial results While this type of study must be done over long time periods, the results to date have been very interesting. We all remember that the spring of 2010 came early, was warm and dry. On the other hand, the spring of 2001 came late, it was humid and relatively cool; ideal conditions to start such a project. The effects of temperature on phenology have been seen in two different areas up to now (Figure 1). First, relative to locations, time lags of 8 and 22 days were noted as concerns the opening and growth of buds between 2010 and Moreover, the effect of temperature was also notable along the altitudinal gradient. In 2010, black spruce buds started growth on May 20 th at the level of the Saguenay River (altitude 30 m), June 11th near the park s visitors and discovery centre (altitude 230 m), and on June 25 th near the summits (altitude 900 m). A lot of work remains to be done to be able to confirm these early observations and better understand growth in a boreal environment. Every spring may not be as magical as the last, but every step along the way of better understanding these natural phenomena leads us to know and appreciate them more and, hopefully, better protect them.
