2 Thank you for taking part in this year s Spring Trail Festival and supporting the work of the Tamar Valley AONB in keeping our area special. The 7 million Mining Heritage Project has celebrated and conserved the rich mining heritage of the Tamar Valley over the past 6 years, and is now drawing to a close. Some of the events showcase just part of the great work the Project has achieved, including the conservation of mining remains, the enhancement of important wildlife habitats, the creation of 25km of multi-use Trails, and the opening of the new Tamar Trails Centre, Gulworthy the hub for exploring the Tamar Trails and our rich & unique mining heritage. PL18 9QT, SX am - 5pm Daily (except Mondays), Free Our Spring Show this year showcases new paintings by Masako Whitehouse and Madeleine Strobel. A wonderful contrast in styles is guaranteed from two of the Tamar Valley s most prominent artists. Also featuring the best of local ceramics, glass, jewellery and printmaking. The Gallery sits in the heart of the village above the River Tamar on the main hill just before you reach the Tamar Inn. Uncovering the Past Exhibition Tamar Trails Centre, Gulworthy PL19 8JE, SX am - 4pm daily, Free A Tamar Valley AONB travelling exhibition, celebrating the end of the 2-year Calstock Parish Heritage Project. The project provided opportunities for the community of Calstock to delve deep into their history and heritage, and is being shown at the NEW Tamar Trails Centre. Uncovering the Past will showcase and highlight the wealth of events and training that were made available to local people, thanks to a grant of 35,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), awarded to the Calstock Parish Heritage Project in October Visitors to the exhibition will be able to learn more about the community s experience and the full stories behind what was uncovered during the project, including results from the 2011 Calstock Roman fort excavation. 8 Saturday 30 March Tamar Trails Centre Open Day The NEW Tamar Trails Centre, near Gulworthy, opens its doors to the public, for the very first time, with a special day of FREE activities for all the family. Come along at any time between 10am and 4pm, and join in the fun!!! Bushcraft skills & firelighting Balloon modelling Face painting Panning for gold Easter Egg Hunt Arts and Crafts in the bell tent Bring your bikes and walking shoes and why not make a day of it. The Tamar Trails offer a fantastic place for families to escape and create their own adventures. Discover the remains of old mines, look for signs of wildlife and make new friends! Hog roast and refreshments will be available from the NEW cafe located at the site. For more information please contact the Tamar Trails Centre on Treesurfers will also be running FREE Taster Sessions so why not challenge your balance and co-ordination on their adrenaline-fuelled treetop ropes courses, jump off a 40ft platform, free fall and touch down (with a soft landing) with their Tree Jump or keep your feet firmly on the ground and learn the skill of archery. 9 Sun 31 March - Mon 1 April Tamar Trails Tamar Valley AONB Easter on the Tamar Trails Why not take some time out to enjoy the Tamar Trails this Easter? They are open from dawn til dusk every day, so bring the family and create your own spring time adventure. Explore the Trails on foot, bicycle, mountain bike or horseback. Or, hire a tramper from the Tamar Trails Centre, for those with limited mobility. Discover what was once the largest copper mine in Europe or find out which rare species have made the area their home. The Tamar Trails start are located just off the A390 between Gunnislake and Tavistock where you will find the newly opened Tamar Trails Centre (opening 30th March). The Centre will be open 9am 5pm over the Easter Bank Holiday offering; * Wildlife cameras * * Interpretation about the area s mining past * * Wildlife & habitat information * * Picnic area * * Refreshments * * Café * The 25km of Trails were created as part of the Tamar Valley Mining Heritage Project, and is one of the landmark achievements of this ambitious project. The Trails have opened up parts of the Tamar Valley that were previously inaccessible to the public. The Tamar Trails Centre is also home to Treesurfers who offer fantastic opportunities to surf through trees, jump from great heights and learn new skills, such as archery. Access to the Tamar Trails and Centre is free of charge. A car parking fee of 2 for the whole day applies, with proceeds reinvested to keep this unique area special. 10 Tues 2 April A Close Encounter of the Geological Kind Meet at Greystone Quarry, 10am. Free The Quarry is ½ mile from Greystone Bridge (PL15 9PF, SX ). A guided tour around the working Quarry at Greystone near Launceston. The tour, by mini bus and on foot, will look at the daily work of the quarry in extracting stone for road surfacing, and also their commitment to conserving the wildlife and geological heritage of the site. This will be an interesting tour for all ages, which will last about 1 ½ hours. If you have never been to a massive working quarry, this is an experience not to be missed. Bring sturdy shoes and outdoor clothing. Sorry no dogs. Suitable for children. Booking essential, as numbers are limited. Archery 10am - 1pm Tree Jump or Zip wire 1pm - 3pm An introduction to archery, a chance to ride the zip wire or jump out of a tree, all in our amazing woodland setting. Join us for superb sessions with qualified instructors where you will get to try your hand at a new adrenaline filled activity. 11 Tues 2 April Wed 3 April Harrowbeer Airfield Walk Park & meet at Knightstone Tea Rooms (PL20 6BT, SX513675) at 12.30pm for a prompt 1pm start. Although the walk is free of charge donations will be welcomed with 100% going to RAF Harrowbeer Interest Group. Join Tamar Valley AONB Project Officer, Sam Barnes, on a leisurely stroll around the remains of RAF Harrowbeer Airfield near Yelverton. During the walk she will be joined by Stephen Fryer from RAF Harrowbeer Interest Group who will talk through the fascinating story of how RAF Harrowbeer came into being and some of the exploits of the Squadrons stationed here. This is a unique opportunity to find out what the building bases were used for and hear anecdotes about the lives and deeds of the Station s personnel. The walk takes about 3 hours. 12 Wed 3 April Walk & Talk to Devon Great Consols Calciners Meet at Tamar Trails Centre, PL19 8JE, SX am - 12:30pm, Free. Join a guided walk along some of the Tamar Trails network to explore the restored industrial remains at Devon Great Consols mine, the biggest copper mine in Europe just 100 years ago. Please bring sturdy shoes and suitable clothes. Walk is steep in some sections but on a good trail surface. Suitable for off-road mobility scooter (Trampers available to hire from Treesurfers). Tamerton to the Tavy Walk Meet at 10.30am, Tamerton Foliot Green. Return to Tamerton Foliot independently or with the group leader by 3.00pm. Free. Join Stepping Stones to Nature on a guided walk along the Discovery Trail from Tamerton Foliot to Lopwell Dam. There and back with a lunchtime stop at the Old Pump House Café and South West Lakes Trust Visitor Centre. Walk one way takes around 1.5 hours. Walk is steep in one section and muddy after rain. Chris will entertain us with some of his famous didgeridoo tales. Create clay forest creatures and fairy rings, then head up to the fire-pit for hot dogs and marshmallow toasting, and maybe even another story or two... 14 Thurs 4 April Woodland Family Activity Day Warleigh Point Nature Reserve, at the end of Station Road, Tamerton Foliot, Plymouth 11am - 4pm, Free Explore the footpaths through Warleigh Point Nature Reserve with a children s quiz trail, wildlife-spotting lottery and craft activities. Look out for bluebells and primroses, woodpeckers and nuthatches and enjoy views of the Tavy and Tamar rivers. Main circular trail approx 1 mile. Wear wellingtons or walking boots. Short section of trail has steep steps. First half of trail suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Free Join the Friends of the Tamar Valley alongside the Tamar Community Trust on a 9-mile walk. We will use the Tamar Trails to reach Morwellham, via newly renovated Morwellham Chapel, and continue on along the Sheepridge trail back to the Tamar Trails Centre for a cup of tea. Meet at the church lychgate, Milton Abbot 2.30pm, 2 per person A guided walk of Milton Abbot village with Sam Barnes, Tamar Architect Edwin Lutyen Valley AONB Project Officer. Discover more about the architecture of the village and the life of the great twentieth-century architect Edwin Lutyens, who designed several buildings in the village for the Duke of Bedford. The walk will last about an hour and will finish with coffee and cakes! Please wear sensible shoes and dress for the weather. Join him for a morning walk through the woods and discover what hidden birds are nesting deep within. There will be a chance to stop, listen and contemplate as well as ask questions along the way. 16 Fri 5 April Sat 6 April Cotehele Quay Circular Meet: Cotehele Quay, outside The Edgcumbe, SX am - 12:30pm, Free A 4-mile walk taking in the Morden Valley, tracing part of the old Cotehele Estate coach track up to St Dominick and returning via Bohetherick Wood. Bring sturdy shoes and suitable clothes. No need to book, just turn up. Well behaved dogs. Suitable for children over 10 years. Join Richard Hibbert in exploring the Tamar Trails. An exciting afternoon of exploration, discovering what is living under your feet and high up in the trees, why leaves are green and how many legs your favourite bug has. Richard will guide you around the Tamar Trails and carry out activities along the way so you can really get to grips with nature. 17 Sat 6 April Sat 6 April & Sun 7 April Lambing Day - Farm Open Day Deer Park Fam, Luckett (PL17 8NW, SX385732) or walk from Luckett on the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail. 11am - 4pm, Free The farm will be opening its doors to the public this Spring allowing people to experience the spring time tradition of lambing first hand. Activities include: * Tour of Lambing Shed: experience a birth & see the newborns * Tractor & Trailer rides to the fields * Nature walks through the Native American Tipi Village ( Covering 280 acres (113 hectares), Deer Park Farm is a good example of a Westcountry mixed farm, with cattle, sheep and various growing crops. It is farmed by the Howlett family, who place a strong emphasis on protecting the environment and enabling the public to learn more about British agriculture and the countryside. Full facilities in the farm Education & Interpretation Community Centre ( WARNING Pregnant mothers not advised to attend for health reasons. 18 Sat Sun 47 April- Sun 5 April Wacker Trail Walk and Work Open Day Meet: Wacker Quay car park (A374 between Antony and Sheviock, Torpoint, PL11 3AH, SX390552) am onwards: practical work continuing through the day until 4pm. Free Join the local community group to explore the Wacker to Antony Trail from the picnic and beauty spot of Wacker Quay along the disused military railway up to Antony village and the Ring o Bells Inn. You can just walk along the riverside and through the woods and see the improvements being made to the trail, or get stuck in and join a work party who will be doing a variety of practical conservation tasks during the day. Walk each way can take up to 1 hour. Bring sturdy shoes and suitable clothes. Walk can be very muddy in some sections after wet weather and there are 2 flights of steps. Well behaved dogs under control please. Suitable for all ages but be aware of surface conditions if wet. Bedford United Walk Tamar Trails, near Gulworthy (meeting at the Tamar Trails Centre, PL19 8JE, SX438726) 1pm - 3pm. 3 per person. Be one of the first to walk along this newly opened route, and enjoy a guided tour of one mile around Bedford United, to discover the history & archaeology of this mine site. Rick Stewart, Manager of the George & Charlotte Mine at Morwellham, will bring to life one of the most important copper mines of the Tamar Valley area, with his knowledge and expertise. Rick is currently writing a book on Devon Great Consols, and is keen to share his passion of this much-loved area with walkers on this event. Please note there is a small parking charge at the Trails Centre. 20 Discovery Trail Challenge Volunteer Trail Wardens! Join us for another chance to walk the entire length of the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail (30.5 miles) in just one day! In 2012 we raised 2500 for Devon Air Ambulance. This year our chosen charity is Butterfly Conservation, to help support their work in the Tamar Valley with the Heath Fritillary populations. The Discovery Trail has been the flagship recreational trail in the Tamar Valley for over 10 years. The event will start at 8am, for your chance to complete one of the most varied and rewarding routes in the South West.
