PAGE 2 VIEW DATES, PRICES & BOOK YOUR HOLIDAY HERE Introduction If you are looking for a tropical island adventure where the many exotic highlights are linked and complemented by a selection of varied and rewarding cycle rides, this is one to consider. The focus of this holiday is the paradise island of Bali and the eastern part of the adjacent Indonesian island of Java. In this steamy corner of the world, we will find a mix of stunning landscape, from white-sand beaches and palm trees, to emerald-green rice paddies and the striking volcanic cones of the region s biggest peaks. Culturally, too, these islands are diverse; Bali is the only Hindu province in Indonesia, while Java is predominantly Muslim. The ethnic and cultural variety is reflected in the many temples (there are 10,000 on Bali alone) and other religious sites that we will see and in the traditional music, dance and ceremony of the local people. From the artists town of Ubud on Bali, with its many shops and galleries, we explore on rural backroads, take a rafting trip on the Ayung River, cycle to the crater rim on Gunung Batur and enjoy a session of snorkelling at Menjangan Island. Then, after a ferry crossing to Java, we bike and hike to the amazing Devil s Mine on Gunung Ijen and cycle on jungle trails to the dreamy Indian Ocean beaches of Rajegwesi and Pulau Merah. Back on Bali, a final free day beside the sea at Canggu is a great way to sign off on this Indonesian idyll. Explore International. This holiday is part of our Explore International range. Participants on these trips can book through KE or through one of our international partners. This helps us to gather together sufficient numbers of like-minded adventurers to get your holiday up and running quickly. Led by an English-speaking guide, the cosmopolitan nature of these groups can be an important part of the experience! Is this holiday for you? ADVENTURE CYCLING. There are 9 days where we have included the option to do some cycling on this holiday. In total, this could amount to 320 kilometres, an average of 35 kilometres on each of the cycling days. Some of these cycling days are very straightforward, effectively sightseeing on your bike, whilst others are tougher, like the ride on Gunung Batur and the ascent to our camp on Gunung Ijen. It s important to remember, however, that we have a support vehicle for the great majority of our cycling route and there is the opportunity to use this at any time. Approximately 70% of the cycling route is tarmac, although some of this may be in poor condition. The rest is a mix of dirt tracks and potentially slippery jungle trails. On occasion, the heat and humidity may add to the challenge. Accommodation is mostly in comfortable twin-sharing hotels, but there is also 1 night in a basic camp and 2 nights in simple homestays. There is one long transfer day (bus and ferry) as we return from Java to Bali at the end of the holiday. Good quality mountain bikes are provided locally within the cost of the holiday. These are fitted with 'allrounder' tyres which roll well on tarmac, whilst offering sufficient grip on unsurfaced tracks and trails. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the group hotel in Ubud, Bali. A single group transfer from Denpasar's Ngurah Rai airport is provided. Om Swasti! Welcome to Bali. Arriving at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, there is a single group transfer to the group hotel close to the town of Ubud. This transfer is usually in the early afternoon. You will meet

PAGE 3 your guide at the airport and the 35 kilometre transfer by private vehicle will take around an hour and a half. KE Land Only package services begin with dinner at the hotel or in a local restaurant and then overnight at the hotel. Ubud is well-known for its artist community, temples, colourful markets and thriving night life, with lots of great bars and places to eat. HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL MEALS D Day 2: Cycle to Gunung Kawi - a journey into the past and a second night in Ubud. After breakfast at the hotel, we will take out our bikes and set off on a slow and easy first day of biking. It's a relatively flat day tour through the rice fields and traditional villages to visit the royal tombs of Gunung Kawi, north of Ubud. This is one of Bali's oldest and largest monuments and dates from the 11th century. Ten shrines (known as 'candi') have been cut into the rock face on either side of a narrow river gorge. We leave our bikes at the end of the access road and hike down close to 300 stone steps to reach this atmospheric site. Also featuring a waterfall, a small temple and some caves, Gunung Kawi provides a great introduction to Balinese history and culture. After our visit, we cycle back to Ubud and have the remainder of the day free to explore this colourful capital of Balinese art. HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL ASCENT 200M DISTANCE 32KM DESCENT 200M TIME 3 HRS CYCLING HOURS Day 3: Two hours of whitewater rafting on the Ayung River and return to Ubud by bike. After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, there is some free time before we are picked up at around midday and taken to the banks of the Ayun River. You will need your swimsuit, a sunhat and suncream and some dry clothes to change into after the rafting. The drive takes approximately 30 minutes. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the rafting guides who will give you a helmet, lifejacket and paddle. The guides will then provide a safety briefing and also explain and demonstrate paddling techniques. A 'dry bag' will be provided to protect your valuables and dry clothes. Then it's time to start paddling! (4 passengers + 1 guide per raft) You will cover 10 kilometers on the Ayung River over approximately 2 hours. The rafting is safe, fun and exhilarating with rapids rated at Class II and III. The trip is divided into two parts with a rest stop on the riverbanks at the halfway point. Along the way you will be surrounded by spectacular trees, forests and towering cliffs. The water is clear and reaching the take out point, you will be treated to a buffet Indonesian lunch in a restaurant with stunning views of the river and surrounding hills. There are shower and toilet facilities available. Afterwards, you will be able to cycle back to the hotel in Ubud on backroads, passing through rice fields and scattered farms. We spend a third night in Ubud with its numerous shops and special atmosphere. HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL ASCENT 100M DISTANCE 15KM DESCENT 400M TIME 1-2 HRS CYCLING HOUR Day 4: Cycle to the crater rim on Batur Volcano. Descend to Lake Butur and overnight in Kintamani. Today, we set off on a real mountain bike adventure! The first few kilometres will be relatively easy alongside rice terraces and cacao plantations, with one last glance into the canyon of the Ayung River. We then start a long climb on a tarmac road that winds its way through the plantations of Kintamani, passing through rich forest at times and

PAGE 4 leading up to the crater rim of the still active volcano, Gunung Batur. This volcano has erupted 26 times in the last 200 years, most recently in the year From the crater rim, we can look down into the caldera, which is home to 16,000 people and a 10 kilometre-long lake, Danau Batur. The views of this dreamlike landscape are special indeed. We then bike down into the crater on a short section of old tarmac and gravel road, followed by 13 kilometres of unpaved roads and straightforward singletrack to a small and rustic village where we take our lunch. After lunch, a short and steeper descent takes us to the base of the volcanic cone, where we continue our ride on sandy trails amongst the bare rock of old and more recent lava fields - a real volcanic experience with lots of photo opportunities. Reunited with the support vehicle, we transfer to our hotel in nearby Kintamani and the rest of day is at leisure. HOTEL DESCENT 800M ASCENT 800M TIME 4-5 HRS CYCLING HOURS DISTANCE 35KM Day 5: Hike in the Batur Volcano Geopark, then bike to Auman and overnight at Bedugul. Today will include both biking and hiking. After breakfast at our hotel, we cycle out to the nature reserve beneath Batur Volcano. Batur Global Geopark is one of a growing international network of reserves recognised by UNESCO and the first of its kind in Indonesia. Here, we have a short hike between native villages, with great views of the lake (Danau Batur) and the chance to meet the fishermen who make their living from the lake. We will then go to a traditional Indonesian restaurant for a midday meal of fresh fish, before taking a short transfer to meet up with our bikes at Penulisan. From here, we ride on a minor road which takes us southwards to Pelaga Village, where we can look back to the lake and the ocean beyond. Our route now turns back towards the north and we stop off at Auman, where we board the support vehicle for the completion of our journey to Bedugul (the next 15 kilometres of road gains 1000 metres). At Bedugul, we can take another hike through rain forest amongst lianas and gianttrees, ending up at yet another idyllic lake. Around 2 hours of walking in total today. HOTEL DESCENT 600M ASCENT 750M TIME 3 HRS CYCLING HOURS DISTANCE 25KM Day 6: Cycle from Bedugul to the twin lakes, then a big descent and coastal ride beside the Bali Sea to Pemuteran. A longer day of cycling today, but with the option to ride in the support vehicle for the second part of the ride. Immediately on leaving Bedugul, we find ourselves cycling through the so-called 'Monkey Forest' on a short but strenuous climb amongst lush rainforest vegetation including orchids, as well as the cheeky Balinese long-tailed monkeys (actually a species of macaque). Turning towards the west into the Munduk region, we see the twin lakes of Danau Buyan and Danau Tamblingan and make a tea or coffee stop at a roadside eatery. From here, there's a fantastic, 30 kilometre downhill ride to Bali's north coast, passing through forest, pretty villages and emerald green rice fields. There's an impressive waterfall to visit, too, if time allows. Reaching the coast road at Seririt after approximately 40 kilometres, there is the option of either transferring the next 35 kilometres to the hotel in Pemuteran, or cycling. Overnight in Pemuteran. HOTEL DESCENT 1600M ASCENT 400M TIME 5 HRS CYCLING HOURS DISTANCE 75KM

PAGE 5 Day 7: Menjangan Island snorkelling, ferry to Ketapang on Java and overnight at Bondowoso. After breakfast, we drive to the harbour at Labuan Luang, where we board a small boat and cruise out towards the small and forested Menjangan Island. This is one of the best snorkelling sites in Bali, with an abundance of tropical fish and pristine coral gardens. We have a couple of hours to enjoy the snorkelling in crystal clear water where the visibility can be as much as 40 metres. We will stop off for a picnic lunch on a sandy beach, before returning to Labuan Labang, then to our hotel to freshen up and check out. Mid-afternoon, we will drive to the harbour in Gilimanuk and from there embark on the 30-minute ferry crossing of the Java Strait. Disembarking at Ketapang, we will drive to our hotel in Bondowoso, the western gateway to Mount Ijen. There is a total of around 4 hours driving today. HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL Day 8: Cycle and transfer to our camp at Patulding, high on Gunung Ijen. Today is one of the hardest days of the trip as we cycle up to our overnight camp on Gunung Ijen, close to the 'Devil's Mine'. A minor road, surfaced at first and then rather broken-up runs from Bondowoso towards the volcanic massif of Ijen and its neighbours and we cycle a long section of this road. Cycling through coffee plantations, with the peak of Gunung Raung on our right hand side, we pass a prominent crest and enjoy an 8 kilometre downhill section onto a high plain amongst more coffee farms and with great volcano views. Here, we stop and load our bikes onto the support vehicle for the 45 minute drive up to our camping place in a clearing in the forest at Patulding (1850m). For anyone who still has energy to spare, there is the option to make the hike up to the crater rim for sunset views (a fee is payable locally for this). At camp, we will have dinner around the campfire. All camping equipment; tent, sleeping bag, mattress and torch are provided. CAMPING DESCENT 500M ASCENT 1000M TIME 5-6 HRS CYCLING HOURS DISTANCE 40KM D Day 9: Sunrise walk to the Devil's Mine, return to camp and descend (bike or transfer) to Ketapang. One of the unique things about Gunung Ijen is the very strong emission of sulphur gas that takes place within its crater. This has led to the creation of rich deposits of sulphur which are 'mined' by local people. Access to this socalled Devil's Mine is via the crater rim which lies 3 kilometres from our camp and at an elevation of 2385 metres. There is a wide track up to the crater rim and it will take us around an hour and a half to get there. We are not permitted to descend into the crater on account of the toxic fumes. From the rim, there are great views of the green-blue and very acidic crater lake. Here, too, we will meet the mine workers who make a hazardous living down amongst the sulphur gas, hacking the vivid yellow mineral from the crater walls and carrying it out in simple baskets in loads of up to 70 kilograms. Our descent to camp is easier than the ascent and takes an hour. From the camp at Patulding, we have the option of either transferring or cycling down the east side of the mountain to our hotel in Ketapang. Arriving in the late afternoon, we check in and have the remainder of the day at leisure. HOTEL DISTANCE 30KM DESCENT 1800M TIME 2-3 HRS CYCLING HOURS Day 10: Cycle from Sarongan Village through the jungle to the beach at Rajegwesi.

PAGE 6 This morning we get ready for a 2-day visit to Java's south coast and the fishing village and beach at Rajegwesi. After a transfer to the start of our ride at Sarongan Village, we set off into the luxuriant jungle that cloaks the coastal strip in this part of south-east Java. We ride a mix of jungle track and broken tarmac road through plantations of coffee, cacao and rubber trees, covering around 40 kilometres and stopping off for a picnic lunch en route. Tonight our accommodation is in dormitory rooms at a homestay run by the people of Rajegwesi on the edge of Meru Betiri National Park. This is another great opportunity to learn a little of the way of life of the local people - in this case a traditional fishing community. HOMESTAY DESCENT 200M ASCENT 200M TIME 4-5 HRS CYCLING HOURS DISTANCE 40KM D Day 11: Jungle trail cycling to the 'Red Island' of Pulau Merah. Afternoon free. On this, our final cycling day, we head east along the coast, again on jungle trails. Our route takes us by way of Green Bay, a charming beach fringed by lush rainforest. We have some fantastic coastal perspectives and the chance to stop for a dip in the sea. We arrive at Pulau Merah at around midday and after lunch the rest of the day is free to explore. Swim, relax and enjoy the sunset. Once again, we are in homestay accommodation with dinner provided by the owner. HOMESTAY DESCENT 100M ASCENT 100M TIME 3 HRS CYCLING HOURS DISTANCE 25KM D Day 12: Transfer from Pulau Merah to Canggu on Bali's south coast. Today is a transfer day, so it's a good idea to get up early and have a final swim in this idyllic spot. Then, after breakfast, we set off on the drive to Ketapang, which takes around 2 and a half hours. After the short ferry ride to Gilimanuk, we continue our transfer, this time along Bali's magnificent south coast to our beachfront hotel accommodation at Canggu. This part of our journey takes around 4 hours and will include a stop for lunch at a roadside restaurant. Overnight in Canggu. HOTEL Day 13: A free day at Canggu. A day at leisure. Swim, stroll amongst the beach shacks, shop for souvenirs or watch the fishermen coming and going and mending their nets on the 10 kilometre long beach. We spend a second night at our Canggu hotel. HOTEL MEALS B Day 14: Departure Day. A single timed transfer to Denpasar's Ngurah Rai Airport is provided. KE Land Only package services end with breakfast at the hotel. Depending on your flight time, you may have some more free time today. The single timed transfer (30 minutes) to Denpasar's Ngurah Rai Airport is usually in the late afternoon. If you would like to extend your stay on Bali, we can also arrange additional nights at the group hotel. MEALS B

Two common dishes, nasi goreng and mie goreng (fried rice and fried noodles, similar to their Chinese or Japanese counterparts) can be found everywhere and are an easy introduction to the Indonesian diet. Every town has at least one market, providing an incredible range of fresh fruit and vegetables, and these form an important part of most Indonesian dishes. The meals on the trip will be a mix of traditional Indonesian dishes and more familiar international dishes. When staying in hotels or lodges we will take our meals at the accommodation or in nearby restaurants. Joining Arrangements & Transfers The group will meet at the group hotel in Ubud on Day 1 of the Land Only holiday itinerary. 8 PAGE 8 Accommodation Accommodation for this holiday is in a mix of hotels, homestay (2 nights) and camping (1 night). The hotels are of a good standard and some have swimming pools. Some are resort hotels and some have bungalow-style accommodation. The homestay accommodation at Rajegwesi and Pulau Merah is dormitory style with mattresses and sleeping bags (if required) provided. Electricity is not always available for these 2 nights and there is no AC or hot water. At the camp at Patulding, we will use 2-person tents with camping mattress and sleeping bag provided. Accommodation is based on twin share and if you are travelling alone you will be paired with another independent traveller of the same sex. Single rooms are available for all of the hotel nights for a supplementary charge. Group Leader & Support Staff The group will be accompanied throughout by a professional English-speaking local biking leader. Groups of 8 persons or more will have a second biking leader. There will also be a support vehicle and driver. Specialist river guides will accompany the group during the rafting. Altitude The altitudes on this holiday are not extreme and the maximum altitude attained is no more than the equivalent of a pressurised cabin on an international flight. You may feel the altitude the first time you trek above 2000 metres but all that is required is a slower pace to compensate. You should pay particular attention to your hydration levels while trekking above 2000 metres. Spending Money A total of around US$300 should be allowed for miscellaneous expenses and non-included meals. This amount will also cover reasonable tips to local staff. If you are intending to buy expensive souvenirs, you should budget accordingly (credit cards can be useful in this respect). Also, if you expect to buy considerable quantities of soft drinks or beer, you should make an allowance for this. Guidance On Tipping Tipping is the accepted way of saying thank you for good service. Tips do not form part of the wages of our local staff but they are very much appreciated. It is important to remember that tipping is voluntary and should be dependent on good service. The amount to tip is up to you but we suggest that you discuss this as a group and make tips from the group as a whole. As a rough guide, we recommend that you can expect to contribute around $75 to the group tips pool. Bike Hire Bikes are provided locally within the cost of the holiday. Our agent in Indonesia provides Trek 4700 mountain bikes which have Shimano components, front suspension, disk brakes and triple chainsets with 27 gears. The bikes are well maintained and in good condition and come equipped with flat pedals. A helmet and water bottle is also provided. The bikes are fitted with 'all-rounder' tyres which roll well on tarmac and offer sufficient grip for the unsurfaced tracks and trails. Please provide us with your height when you book, so we can make sure an appropriate size of bike is available for you. Vehicle Support Throughout this trip we have the back up of one or more support vehicles which will follow the group for most of each day s ride. The group s baggage will be transported in the support vehicle and the whole group and bikes can

PAGE 9 also be transported, as there are a number of transfers within our itinerary. The local biking leader and the support vehicle driver will watch over the group and there will be regular water stops, every 10 kilometres or so, to allow the group to reassemble. We want everyone to enjoy their cycling experience on this trip and we recognise the importance of group members being allowed to cycle at their own pace. The support vehicle will pick up any group members who wish to take a break from cycling at any time. Free KE Gift We give you a free gift as a way to thank all our clients who book a KE holiday. Choose from KE T-shirts, buffs, KE trek bags* (where applicable) plus many more. Alternatively you can choose to make a 10 donation to the Juniper Trust Charity. You can make your selection in your My KE account after booking. * A free KE trek bag is available on this holiday. Delivery outside of the UK will be charged. Baggage Allowance You should travel with one main item of luggage, such as a KE Trek Bag or similar holdall, as well as a small day pack or mountain bike-specific hydration pack. The day pack can be used to carry valuable items such as cameras and GPS devices whilst travelling and will also carry your day-ride essentials during the rides. Group Size & Holiday Status For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in Dates and Prices table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements. General Information Passport & Visas A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required for visits to countries outside the EU. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Visa requirements and charges are subject to change without notice. If you are travelling outside the EU you should have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for each country that you visit. Visa Indonesia A visa valid for 30 days can be obtained free on arrival if entering and exiting Indonesia by certain airports (Lombok is not on the list). If you intend to stay longer than 30 days, you must check the visa requirements with the Indonesian Embassy. Health & Vaccinations You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you specific require any vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g. diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella), along with hepatitis A and typhoid. Malarial prophylaxis are required. A certificate of yellow fever vaccination is required if travelling from countries with risk of yellow fever

PAGE 10 transmission and for travellers having transited for more than 12 hrs through an airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dentist check up. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro. Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes, like malaria. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Currency The unit of currency in Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) Electricity Supply & Plug We recommend you check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items at: Preparing For Your Holiday The better conditioned you are the more you will enjoy your trip. We suggest that you adopt a sensible weekly exercise regime and fit in a number of long cycle rides in hilly country to ensure you are physically capable of taking part in this trip - this will also provide you with an opportunity to make sure all your riding kit is tried and tested before you travel. Cycling is obviously the best activity to prepare for this trip, however, running, squash and swimming are also good for developing aerobic fitness and stamina. Travel Aware As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign & Commonwealth Offices' Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: for essential travel advice and tips. KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe. Should the FCO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation. We receive regular updates direct from the FCO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground. If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office. Climate Lying just south of the equator, the temperature in this part of Indonesia is relatively high year-round. We can expect daytime temperatures at lower elevations to be as high as 34 C with high humidity. In the more mountainous areas, the daytime temperature will be a very pleasant 20 C and with considerably less humidity. This part of Indonesia receives most of its rainfall between December and February. In the dry season which extends from April to November we can expect sunshine on most days. Occasional rainfall can occur in the dry season but this tends to be during the night or in the early morning. Books Lonely Planet Bali and Lombok
