PAGE 2 Introduction Indonesia is located at the junction of four tectonic plates and has more active volcanoes than any other country. Our journey through this amazing landscape of living mountains takes us from island to island, from Java to Bali and onward to Lombok. En route, we experience the impressive diversity of the Indonesian archipelago, its vegetation varying from tropical rainforest to dry steppe, with colourful wildlife and a rich cultural tapestry. Our exciting programme of trekking includes the ascent of 5 major volcanoes, starting out with Merapi (2930m) on Java, then the iconic Bromo and Kawa Ijen where we can see the famous sulphur miners. Crossing to Bali we climb Mt Batur (1717m) and have some time in the lovely town of Ubud before crossing on a fast ferry to the island of Lombok. Here we make a memorable 3-day traverse over the summit of Rinjani (3726m), trekking via the stunning Segara Anak crater lake. We end the holiday back on Bali at the laid-back resort of Sanur, with its palm fringed white sand beaches and mix of placid and surf shores the perfect place for a final chill out before flying home. Is this holiday for you? This holiday is a mix of cultural touring and trekking. The trekking on the trip will be on a variety of underfoot terrain including jungle trails, village paths and steep and loose volcanic scree. The majority of the trekking days are not long being around 4 to 6 hours. However there are some longer days, notably during the ascents of Merapi, Agung and Rinjani. The summit days of these three volcanoes will involve 8 or 9 hours of trekking, including some quite challenging sections of trail where the underfoot conditions are at times steep and loose. Additionally, the moderately high altitudes attained will have some effect on physical performance. Although this is not a sustained trekking holiday, group members should have a good level of physical fitness for this trip. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the group hotel in Borobudur. Rendez-vous at the group hotel in Borobudur. A single timed airport transfer (1 hour 20 minutes) from Jogjakarta Airport to the group hotel is provided. KE land only package services start with this transfer. At the hotel we meet with our guide who will brief us on the days ahead. HOTEL MEALS D Day 2: Visit Borobudur Temple, trek in the Meoreh Hills and transfer to Selo. Today we make an early start (around 7am) to explore the nearby Borobodur Temple which is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. Comprised of thousands of volcanic and river stone blocks, the temple was assembled without the advantage of mechanised machinery and took more than 75 years to complete. After spending some time exploring this UNESCO Heritage site we will begin a short trek through plantations and villages of the Menoreh Hills. Trekking for around 2 to 2.5 hours we will be able to enjoy views of the volcanoes surrounding the valley: Sumbing, Sundoro, Merbabu and Merapi, our objective for the next day. Arriving in Candirejo Village, we take a taste of local life as we enjoy a local horse cart ride through the small lanes lined with traditional houses of this peaceful Javanese village. Along the way we may be able to see locals making cassava crackers, playing the gamelan or harvesting and drying vanilla and chilli. We will take lunch in the village before transferring to Selo in the afternoon where we check into a basic guesthouse and take some to rest up before our ascent of Merapi.

PAGE 3 GUESTHOUSE ASCENT 30M DISTANCE 9KM GPS DATA VIEW NOW DESCENT 700M TIME 2-3 HRS WALKING HOURS Day 3: Ascent of Merapi (2930m), transfer to Solo. We are woken shortly after midnight. Our aim is to be climbing the summit cone around sunrise and after getting ready and taking some breakfast, we will set off around 2.00 am. We begin by walking through plantations which cover the lower slopes. At around 2000 metres we leave the fields behind and the trees begin to thin out. If the moon is out or we have a clear starlit night, we can pick out the shapes of nearby volcanoes. The path becomes quite rocky as we climb higher. We arrive at a large flatish area known as Pasar Bubrah where we can take a rest, using the many boulders strewn around as shelter from the winds which can be quite chilling. Merapi is one of the world's most active volcanoes. Its activity levels are constantly monitored and from time to time the authorities restrict access beyond Pasar Bubrah. All being well, we will now begin the final 45 minutes to 1 hour scramble up the volcanic ash cone to reach the crater rim as the sun rises. The views are stunning, the location incredible; steam blows from vents in the mountain and the smell of Sulphur is everywhere. After photos we will descend all the way back to Selo which should take us approximately 3 hours and arriving back at our guesthouse, we can catch some sleep or rest until lunchtime. In the afternoon we will drive (50km) to Solo. Competing with Jogjakarta as the hub of Javanese culture, the sprawling metropolis of Solo also known as Surakarta, is a mix of the traditional and modern with backstreet markets and the glass fronted shopping arcades. The city also has many historical buildings, palaces and temples. After checking in to our hotel the rest of the afternoon is free to explore this fascinating city. ECOLODGE ASCENT 1300M DESCENT 1300M DISTANCE 12KM TIME 8-9 HOURS TREKKING HOURS GPS DATA VIEW NOW Day 4: Travel by train to Mojokerto, transfer to Bromo. We have an early morning pick up from the hotel to catch the Sancaka Pagi Train to Mojokerto in Eastern Java. Travelling by train in Java is a great way to meet local people and is also the best way to enjoy the amazing volcanic landscapes of Central and East Java. We will travel in 'executive class' and despite the developing heat of the Indonesian day outside of the train, we may need to wear something warm in the air conditioned carriage. It will take approximately 4 hours to complete the scenic journey from Solo to Mojokerto. On arrival at the station we board our waiting transport and continue our journey for a further 4 hours to Cemorolawang, Bromo. We will take lunch along the way and arriving at our hotel we can relax and enjoy the views. HOTEL MEALS BL Day 5: Sunrise visit to Mt Bromo, transfer to Ijen. Mount Bromo is the icon for Indonesia's Living Mountains and is seen at its best at sunrise from the nearby 'King Kong' viewpoint at Bukit King Kong. Making a pre-dawn start, we set off in our 4X4 vehicle and walk for approximately one hour up to the viewpoint which is a great vantage point for viewing Bromo and the neighbouring volcanoes Semeru and Batkok. From here, the combination of light and morning mist gives rise a much photographed, almost surreal landscape of cones rising from shrouded, half glimpsed forest. After spending some time enjoying the view we will begin trekking around the crater rim to Seruni Village, all the while overlooking

PAGE 4 the Tengger caldera and its three volcanoes. From Seruni we will continue in 4x4 vehicles through the sand sea lunar landscape to the foot of the active Bromo cone. From here a series of stairs facilitates the short final ascent to the crater rim (2329m). Afterwards we return by jeep to our hotel in where we can enjoy a late breakfast. We now have a fairly full day of driving through some highly scenic areas, making several stops for breaks and for photos along the way. It is 229 kms from Cemorolawang to Ijen, a journey of around 8 hours including stops. Arriving at our hotel in the late afternoon, we have some time to relax before dinner. HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL TIME 2 HRS TREKKING HOURS Day 6: Climb Kawah Ijen (2385m) and ferry to Bali. We make another early start (around 4.30 am.) and travel by 4X4 vehicle for approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to Paltuding where we begin the trek to the summit of Kawah Ijen. Before setting off we will eat a boxed breakfast provided by our hotel along with hot tea or coffee from one of the local warungs in Paltuding. From here it is a trek of around 3km to the top which will take us 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete. Along the way we are likely to encounter the famous sulphur porters of Ijen, carrying loads of up to 70 kg of the bright yellow rock, walking down the mountainside often barefooted. We aim to reach the crater rim around sunrise and hope to enjoy a spectacular dawn view from the top. Looking down into the crater we will observe the 200 metre-deep brilliant turquoise lake and can watch the sulphur miners as they break up the cooling sulphur deposits into blocks and load up their baskets before beginning the difficult climb up to the crater rim. The environment in which the miners work is highly toxic and visitors are not allowed down into the crater. Walking back down to Paltuding, we return to our hotel to freshen up and have a late lunch. In the afternoon we transfer to the ferry terminal in Ketapang to make the crossing of just over 2 miles to Gilimanuk on the island of Bali. We have a drive of approximately 1 hour to Pemuteran which is located on a small bay in the northwest corner of the island.after check in at our hotel, our Javanese guide and driver will return to Java and the remainder of the day is free for relaxing. We will meet our Balinese guide and driver tomorrow afternoon but remember to set your watch as there is a 1 hour time difference between the two islands. The hotel has a swimming pool and direct access to the beach and is the perfect place to take a mid-tour relaxation break. After breakfast at the hotel, the morning is free to enjoy the hotel facilities or take part in an optional Snorkel Experience around Menjangan Island (payable locally) which includes the boat trip out to the island, basic instruction, equipment and lunch while you explore the underwater world of a Balinese coral garden. Our Balinese guide and driver will meet the group at 2.00 pm and after a briefing, we head north following the coast for approximately 2 hours of driving. We pass Singaraja town and stop to visit the Beiji temple before driving on small mountain roads to reach Kintamani village on the slopes of Batur (1770m). HOTEL MEALS BD Day 8: Climb Batur (1717m), visit Penglipuran village and transfer to Ubud

PAGE 5 An early morning wake up and a short (15 minute) transfer brings us to the start of our trek. At 1717m tall, Batur is not the highest volcano in Bali but its setting in the heart of a huge crater 14km in diameter, adjacent to a large crescent-shaped lake surrounded by the high walls of the crater rim, is absolutely stunning. It will take us approximately 2 hours 30 minutes to reach the top of Batur where we will enjoy a light breakfast prepared by the hotel. We trek down around the secondary crater and also via the youngest crater with its smoking cone, before walking out across a sea of black volcanic sand. Meeting our vehicles we return to our hotel in Kintamani. There will be time to change and finish packing before setting off on the next leg of the tour. We make a short drive to Rendang where we stop for a lunch of fresh Balinese cuisine with great views of the distant Gunung Agung. We continue on to the ancient village of Penglipuran, which is famed for its traditional culture and village lay out. We continue for a further 40km to Ubud, a laid back, sprawling town made up of connecting villages surrounded by forest and rice terraces. This is the cultural centre of Bali with a thriving arts scene and a number of art museums. We check into our hotel here and the remainder of the afternoon is free for exploring. HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL MEALS BL TIME 5HRS TREKKING HOURS Day 9: Free day in Ubud (optional Temples and Rice Terraces tour). Today is free for exploration of this culturally fascinating town. Ubud is the sort of place that easily absorbs a couple of days. As well as numerous temples, palaces, museums, art galleries and the incredible landscape, there are a number of traditional spas, a botanic gardens, a bird park and the Monkey Forest. Our guide will not be with the group today but will be able to give good advice on things to see and do. An optional Temples and Terraces tour (full day - payable locally and including lunch) can be arranged which will include a visit to the unique temple of Pura Gunung Kawi, an 11th century temple set amongst the rice fields and Pura Tirta Emple, a water temple dedicated to the Hindu God, Vishnu, and a rice field walk with local coffee tasting. HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL MEALS B Day 10: Drive to Padang Bai, ferry to Lombok, transfer to Sembalun (1150m). We drive for 45 minutes to Padang Bai harbour on Balli's East Coast. Here we say goodbye to our Bali guide and board the fast ferry for the 75km crossing to Teluk Kodek harbour on the island of Lombok. Arriving in Lombok we are met by our Lombok guide and tour vehicle at the harbour and we head north to Pusuk Forest which is a protected area for macaque monkeys. The road crosses Pusuk pass the high point on a ridge through the forest where we have extensive views over the island and to the coast. We continue around the coast making stop at a local restaurant for lunch, before heading to the mountain village of Sembalun on the slopes of Rinjani in the east of Lombok. Surrounded by terraced fields of rice, garlic, tomato and chilli, Sembalun is actually made up of two villages 2km apart. We will stay in Sembalun Lawang (1150m) located in an ancient caldera of Rinjani. A total of approximately 5 hours driving today. HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL Day 11: Ascend to High Camp on Rinjani. Rinjani is the dominating feature of the island of Lombok. At an altitude of 3726 metres, it is the second highest mountain in Indonesia; only Gunung Kerinci on Sumatra is hgher. The ascent of this peak requires an overnight high camp. Rinjani is a very active volcano and is very closely monitored. Whether or not we can attempt the summit will depend on its activity at the time. The authorities do not permit climbing if the activity is considered

PAGE 6 unsafe. We set off from Sembalun Lawang at around 8.00 am. after we have officially registered for the climb. The trek today is initially through grassland and rolling hills for the first 500 metres. The paths steepen and become looser as we gain altitude and once we pass 1800 metres the gradient is almost 45 degrees in places with steps cut into the hillside. At last we reach our high camp (Pelawangen II) at 2650 metres on the crater rim. The views down to the picture postcard Segara Anak Crater Lake with its own active volcano, Gunung Baru, in the centre, are simply stunning and we settle in for a night on the mountain in this sensational spot. CAMPING ASCENT 1475M DESCENT 15M DISTANCE 12KM TIME 6 HRS TREKKING HOURS GPS DATA VIEW NOW Day 12: Climb Rinjani (3726m), descend to lake and climb to the Senaru rim. An early wake up for a 3.00 am start, aiming to be on the summit for sunrise. The climb up from Pelawangan II takes approximately 3 hours. The views across the island and over to Gunung Agung on Bali are sensational. After congratulations and much photography, we descend to Pelawangen II for a well-earned breakfast. After some rest, we set off again trekking steeply downhill for 600 metres to the Segara Anak Crater Lake. Nearby is a hot springs which has supposed healing powers. We can test this belief for ourselves with a relaxing swim before climbing back up to the rim on a different side. It will take approximately 3 hours to make the steep climb up to the Senaru Rim and we make our second camp here (Pelawangen 1) at 2600 metres. This part of the rim offers the best views both of the summit and also of the lake and its active cone. CAMPING TIME 9 HRS TREKKING HOURS Day 13: Descend to Senaru and transfer to Senggigi. After breakfast in Pelawangen 1, we begin our descent of the mountain. During first part of the trek we have stunning views of Lombok's north coast and over the Gilli islands. Further down the mountain we enter lush rain forest inhabited by monkeys and the rest of the trek is in the jungle. As we drop in altitude the humidity rises and we will be pleased to see our waiting vehicle and driver ready with water and towels! After saying goodbye to our trek crew with who we have shared our Rijani adventure for the past two nights, we drive to Senggigi where we check into our beach front hotel. HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL DESCENT 2000M Day 14: Drive to Teluk Kode, speed boat to Serangan Island and transfer to Sanur Beach. This morning we return to the harbour at Teluk Kode where we take a fast boat to Bali, taking approximately 2 hours for the crossing. Arriving on the island we transfer (20 minutes) to our hotel at Sanur beach. More laid back than other beach destinations in Bali, Sanur's coconut palm fringed white sands, warm waters and intense blue skies, offer the ideal vision of a Bali beach. After our exertions on Rinjani, this is the perfect place to relax. The rest of the afternoon is free for us to do exactly that. HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL MEALS BD Day 15: Departure Day. Accommodation Accommodation for this holiday is in a variety of good standard hotels, some of which will have swimming pools, and in the mountains, more basic lodges. There are also two nights during the traverse of Rinjani when we will wild camp on the mountain. Accommodation in the majority of hotels, lodges and while camping is based on twin share and if you are travelling alone you will be paired with another independent taveller of the same sex for room and tent share. An exception to this is at the resthouse in Selo prior to the ascent of Merapi. Here the group will stay in a simple dormitory. Single rooms are available for the hotel and lodge nights (except in Selo) for a supplementary charge. Group Leader & Support Staff This holiday travels to three separate destinations within Indonesia and we use different local guides and drivers for each destination. All our guides are professional and experienced English-speaking tour leaders. The Javanese guide will accompany the group on the ferry crossing to Bali before returning to Java. On day 10 the Balinese guide will escort the group to the ferry terminal in Bali and on arrival in Lombok, the local guide and driver will meet the group at the terminal. During the 3 day ascent of Rinjani, we wiill use porters to carry the group camping equipment (not personal equipment). Altitude This holiday involves going to high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 3500 metres. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatise successfully. Before coming on this holiday you should read the advice on trekking at high altitude. You can also talk to one of our trekking experts if you have any concerns about altitude. Spending Money A total of around US$250 - $300 should be allowed for miscellaneous expenses and non included meals. This amount will also cover reasonable tips to local staff. If you intend to take part in any of the optional excursions, you can expect the costs to be as follows: Snorkel trip day 7 $60, Temples and Terraces trip day 9 $60. If you are intending to buy expensive souvenirs, you should budget accordingly (credit cards can be useful in this respect). Also, if you expect to buy considerable quantities of soft drinks or beer, you should make an allowance for this. Guidance On Tipping Tipping is the accepted way of saying thank you for good service. Tips do not form part of the wages of our local staff but they are very much appreciated. It is important to remember that tipping is voluntary and should be dependent on good service. The amount to tip is up to you but we suggest that you discuss this as a group and make tips from the group as a whole. As a rough guide, we recommend that you can expect to contribute around $75 to the group tips pool. Free KE Gift We give you a free gift as a way to thank all our clients who book a KE holiday. Choose from KE T-shirts, buffs, KE trek bags* (where applicable) plus many more. Alternatively you can choose to make a 10 donation to the Juniper Trust Charity. You can make your selection in your My KE account after booking.

During the trek, the camping equipment including your sleeping bag and mattress (provided) will be carried by porters. For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in Dates and Prices table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements. Malarial prophylaxis are required. A certificate of yellow fever vaccination is required if travelling from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission and for travellers having transited for more than 12 hrs through an airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dentist check up. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro. Zika virus has been confirmed as active in this country. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes, like dengue and malaria. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites. The mosquitoes that transmit ZIKV are unlikely to be found above 2,000m altitude. For more information, visit the website of the National Travel Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) at

PAGE 10 Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes, like malaria. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Currency The unit of currency in Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) Electricity Supply & Plug We recommend you check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items at: Preparing For Your Holiday It makes a lot of sense to spend some time before coming on an active holiday, getting some additional exercise. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. We would suggest that you adopt a weekly exercise regime leading up to your trip. Any regular exercise will be good for developing better cardiovascular fitness and stamina. The best preparation is regular walking in hill country and regardless of your training, before departure, we suggest that you try to fit in a number of long walks in hill country. Travel Aware As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign & Commonwealth Offices' Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. Should the FCO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation. We receive regular updates direct from the FCO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground. If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office. Climate Lying on the equator, the temperature in Indonesia is relatively high year-round. We can expect daytime temperatures at lower elevations to be as high as 34 C with high humidity. During the trek and climbs in the mountainous areas, the daytime temperature will be a very pleasant 20 C and with considerably less humidity. At night in the mountains the temperatures can drop surprisingly low, sometimes reaching or even dipping below freezing point. This part of Indonesia receives most of its rainfall between December and February. In the dry season which extends from May to November we can expect sunshine on most days. Occasional rainfall can occur in the dry season but this tends to be during the night or in the early morning. Maps Java: Reise Know-How Verlag. Scale: 1:650,000 Bali & Lombok: Freytag & Berndt. This is normally 200 but for some holidays with special permit fees or internal flights, this may be more. The amount of deposit required for an individual holiday is given on the dates and prices page of the holiday. Late bookings will require full payment. We cannot confirm any booking until we receive your fully completed booking form.

PAGE 13 Adventure Travel Insurance IMPORTANT - It is a condition of joining any of our trips that you are insured against medical and personal accident risks (to include repatriation costs, air ambulance and helicopter rescue services). We also strongly recommend that you take out holiday cancellation insurance, as all deposits paid are non-refundable. Please ensure that your insurer is aware of your KE Adventure itinerary and can agree to cover the activities being undertaken. You will then need to advise us of your policy details and complete an Insurance Declaration Form. CAMPBELL IRVINE DIRECT travel insurance is available to EU residents and will cover the majority of KE Adventure holidays. It has been designed to provide cover for activities normally excluded by other insurers such as trekking, mountain biking and climbing. Please note that certain activities may attract a higher premium. In addition Campbell Irvine Direct cannot provide cover for KE climbing trips above 6000m. Cover for these can be obtained through either the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) or Snowcard. TRAVELEX is a USA based insurer offering travel insurance, which can be used by US citizens and US residents only. KE recommends the "Travelex Select" package for our holidays. If your holiday involves using mountaineering equipment (ropes, harness or crampons), for climbing or glacial travel, you should consider the "Adventure Plus Pak" optional upgrade on the Travelex Select Plan. Please refer to the 'Description of Coverage' for a summary of the terms, conditions, exclusions and limitations of the applicable Protection Plan. This policy will also cover KE climbing trips above 6000m. We hope that this trip notes has answered most of your questions. Please feel free to contact us and speak to one of our experts.

PAGE 14 Equipment List The following checklist should help you with your packing. As a general rule, you should always try to keep the weight of your equipment to a minimum. You Must Bring The Following Items: Hiking boots Daypack 30 litres Training shoes or similar Walking socks Spare laces Trekking trousers Lightweight waterproof overtrousers Underwear Socks Thermal baselayer shirt Casual shirt and/or T-shirts Fleece jacket or warm jumper Lightweight waterproof jacket Sunhat Warm hat Thermal gloves Scarf or neck buff Sunglasses Swimwear Travel clothes Headtorch and spare batteries Sun protection (including total bloc for lips, nose etc.) Water bottles 1 Litre x2 Washbag and toiletries Antibacterial handwash Small towel Basic First Aid Kit - A basic medical kit will accompany each trek and our local leader will have first-aid training.
