6 The Tile Probe - A Versatile And Useful Tool Can be used as a walking or wading staff, a hook to pull yourself up a steep bank, knock down spider webs while walking in a forest, or as a snake beater. Can be used to measure water depths, structure dimensions, rock dimensions, & bank heights. Boat anchor, holder and steadier. Useful in determining composition of substrate material: -sinks to handle with no sound -sinks to handle with "sandpaper" sound -stops abruptly with a solid "thunk" -stops, wiggle handle and push past object -hard to push through with grating sound -stops abruptly with no sound -hard to push through with no sound -bounces back = silt or soft = sand = rock = gravel or cobble = gravel layer = tight clay = soft clay = buried tire revetment

Safety First!!!! Best to conduct field trips with more than one person. Don't get in a hurry, go slow, be aware! Tile probe is handy as a wading & walking staff. Be careful when walking on loose rock.

Be careful when walking on loose rock. Watch out for quicksand (stay in flowing water). Always carry a first aid kit & know basic first aid techniques. Treat even minor scrapes with antibacterial ointment! Protect against insects (ticks, red bugs, mosquitoes). When wading obey the 3 by 3 rule (no more than 3 ft deep & 3 ft per second currents). Use a wader belt with chest waders. Carry that first aid kit!

8 If you start to feel buoyant in flowing water, to save yourself, immediately turn and face into the current so that the water puts your feet in compression to the bottom of the stream.

Wear light-colored clothing, long sleeved shirts tucked into long pants tucked into boots or shoes. Check for ticks after every outing. Most disease carrying ticks are very small, duct tape will remove small ones. A tick has to be attached for 36 hours to transmit Lyme disease. Lyme disease accounts for 90% of all insect-borne diseases in the U.S (pre-west Nile epidemic of 2002, different now). Usually a red spot that expands, sometimes resembles a bull's eye (only occurs in about 40% of all cases). Be sure that your tetanus shot is up-to-date. The shot is good for 10 years.
