ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN Valmiera Tourist Information Centre in cooperation with Kocēni, Burtnieki and Beverīna Municipalities invites to take part in the tourism campaign Centennial treasures!

2 ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN Valmiera Tourist Information Centre in cooperation with Kocēni, Burtnieki and Beverīna Municipalities invites to take part in the tourism campaign Centennial treasures! In honour of Latvia s Centennial, we invite you to travel around Valmiera and its vicinity, in search for the hidden treasures, which appear as the words of power for ourselves and Latvia. Tourism campaign Centennial treasures follows the principles and rules established by the worldwide known game Geocaching (geolocation game, also known as Cache). You can search for the hidden treasures by finding their coordinates on or by following the clues and hints given in the tourism brochure on how to find them. Your task at the campaign is to find treasures or words of powers in popular sightseeing places and objects. Geocaches can be identified as boxes or capsules, in which you will find a pencil, a notebook and some items that can be exchanged. FOR YOUR ATTENTION! While looking for a geocache, try not to attract to yourself attention of people around you. We encourage you to look for them while no one is looking at you. This way you will make sure that a geocache remains hidden for others; After you have found it, please put it back exactly where you found it. Not next to it or in a seemingly better place! Each geocache has precise coordinates and only the person which initially put it there can change the location by also changing the information in the Geocaching website; After finding a geocache, please register in the journal (write your name or Geocaching nickname and the date you found it). Everyone has to register in the journal who wants to qualify for the prizes. For example, a family can participate in the campaign as one applicant with a common name, or each member of the family separately with different names. Participants from the age of 12 can participate in the campaign; If you take something for the geocache, please remember to put something back in exchange; It is forbidden to leave food, used lottery tickets, cigarettes or any trash in the boxes or capsules. We encourage not to put items that can be affected by moisture, as the boxes and capsules are not sealed and water resistant; Please note that any food items left in the boxes and capsules, particularly the ones hidden in forests, can attract wild animals, which can dig out and damage the container; Travelbugs and geocoins are items with a unique ID. If you are a beginner and you are not sure if you will enjoy this game, we suggest not taking them. However, if you do, please register them on When you find the next cache, please leave it there. By no means keep it by yourself, as the purpose of these items is to be moved from one place to another. SUGGESTIONS FOR GEOCACHING Find the right place make sure you re not being watched find the cache once again make sure nobody is watching you register in the journal (make it readable!) don t forget to make sure you re not being watched cover it, if necessary if somebody is watching you, but you still want to register the cache, use a divertive strategy to distract them or pretend that you still are looking for it in another place. TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CAMPAIGN, YOU NEED: To receive a brochure and find at least 10 out of 20 caches included in the campaign; To fill in the brochure by describing the treasure or the word of power you found in each cache; To be at least 12 years old; If you are a registered user at Geocaching, please register your findings on as well. ADDITIONAL RULES: There are four QR code questions given in the brochure; Scan the QR code that you will find in a cache (requires a QR-code reader on a smartphone that can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or the App Store); The hidden answer in the QR code must be written in the brochure of the campaign; To participate in the campaign, additional task is optional, but the correct answers to QR Code questions (randomly chosen) will be awarded with nice surprise awards. If you have fulfilled the requirements, please deliver the brochure in person or send it by post (postmarked November 1) to the Valmiera Tourist Information Centre (Rīgas iela 10, Valmiera, LV-4201) by November 1, 2018 (incl.). If the cache is missing and you cannot find it, please inform us through or get in touch with the Valmiera Tourist Information Centre by or telephone numbers indicated on the back cover of the brochure! The campaign will end on November 10, 2018, when lucky winners will be randomly chosen and will receive prizes from tourism enterprises in Valmiera and Kocēni, Burtnieki and Beverīna Municipalities. We will get in touch with the lucky winners afterwards. 3 VALMIERA 1. Ģīme Nature Trail Ģīme Mill Pond, the trail starts from L. Paegles street Since 2018 the Ģīme River floodgates near Leona Paegles street mark not only the beginning of the Mill Pond, but also the natural cognitive trail. The boardwalk and viewing platforms with interactive stands and 48 different fish and aquatic organisms provide an insight into the life of the Ģīme River and the Mill Pond. At the end of the boardwalk, in accordance with the principles of universal design, a boat dock is built. There near the Nature Trail is placed an open-door class of training in fresh air. Krāču kakts (Corner of the Rapids) The trail from the rowing base "Krāces" (Rapids), Kāpu iela 15 In the Goat Rapids rowing slalom track, which was built in 1969, often can be seen excitement and persistence of both young and experienced athletes, but the Gauja River also keeps memories of earlier sporty events swimming, rowing and diving competitions during the first Gauja Festival in There is a rowing sports base built next to the Goats Rapids in 1986, as well as a secured and well-fitted left bank of the Gauja River, where a quiet walking trail leads to the Vanšu Bridge. Railway Station Water Towers Pleskavas iela 10 For the water towers of the railway station the Valmierians have once given meaningful names Waterhead (Ūdensgalva) and Feinshmeker (Feinšmekers). In a newspaper article Valmierietis is reported: Although the difference between the two water towers of Valmiera railway station after passports is a half-century, that senior lowest still pleases with its romance, while the tallest, silicate palest, is absolutely nothing. Hexagonal red brick water tower was built at the end of the 19th century and was used for the needs of the railway water supply. Hint to find the cache: acacia. GPS: N E Dalin s Beach Jāņa Daliņa iela 6 One of the most popular places to relax in summer for the residents of Valmiera is named after the outstanding Latvian athlete - race walker Jānis Daliņš. In the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Daliņš won the silver medal - the first Olympic medal won by a Latvian athlete under the Latvian flag. Steam Machine Dampis Rubene, Kocēnu pagasts Steam machines, so-called dampis (steam engine), were introduced in the 19th and 20th turn of centuries to ease the threshing of grain. The German steam engine Kemna is self-propelled. During the Soviet era, such steam machines and tractors were scrapped, but this one was blessed, as Ansis Liezers, the chairman of the collective farm Kopsolis, rescued it from destruction by taking care of restoring and displaying the steam engine in a place where it still remains to be seen. GPS: N E Podzēni Alley Vaidavas pagasts The Alley consists of two, slightly thinned tree rows, which are predominantly Russian larches, oaks, lindens and other trees. Alley s ancient tree age could be around 170 years. Alley is a natural monument and is now estimated to be the largest larch alley in the Baltics. Hint to find the cache: stump. GPS: N E Bridge over the River Mazbriede Dikļu pagasts The River Mazbriede begins in the Madiešēnu Swamp from Dauguļu Mazezers (lake). Near this bridge, the river turns east and runs through the valley and the Mill Lake (Dzirnavezers) until it reaches Vik s Fairy Tale Park. Near the bridge there is the Jura Neikena Dikļi Elementary School and the Dikļi Evangelic Lutheran Church, while in the further run the river separates spectator seats from the stage at the Neikenkaln s Nature Concert Hall. 5 BURTNIEKI MUNICIPALITY Jēkabkalns (Jacob s Hill) Bauņi, Matīšu pagasts Jēkabkalns is a part of the former large Bauņi Manor Park, which attracts not only with interesting terrain, dendrological plantings, powerful energy, but also with the unusually rich cultural history. There in 1865 the Second Latvian Song Festival was held. At the edge of the small dug-up river Mugurupīte there is preserved a stone formation, as a bench with all the backrest, which has been called Catherine s bench since ancient times and made in the 18th century. There is near growing larch alley which is also unusual for the Latvian landscape. Hint to find the cache: under the bridge. GPS: N E Colony of White Storks Motorway P16, Matīši Vecate route, Matīšu pagasts In the old larch alley on the Valmiera Mazsalaca road side is viewable the largest colony of white starks in the Baltics, which is also the most northerly existing place in Europe for the mass nesting of white storks. This place attracts the birds with a rich food base - the proximity of Lake Burtnieks, as well as ponds and wet meadows near the colony. White starks have arrived relatively late in Latvia - with the intense land clearing, because they like open landscapes. Hint to find the cache: direction sign. The portal of the church is decorated with the Swedish King Charles XII monogram. On view a pulpit and an altar of the end of the 17th century. The church was built by R.Bindensu, the author of the project of the St. Peter's Church tower in Riga. The church organ was made by F.Ladegast, at that time famous organ builder silver rubles have been paid for the organ. Hint to find the cache: behind a maple, inside. GPS: N E Alley of Rencēnmuiža Rencēnmuiža, Rencēnu pagasts The protected alley is about 180 m long and it contains medium-old oaks, forming a distinct continuous structure - leaves of crowns facing both trees on one side of the road and on opposite sides. Such alleys with an uninterrupted "tunnel" structure of such length are not widespread in Latvia. Moreover, this is a double alley - there are two parallel tree lines on each side of the road. Hint to find the cache: inside. GPS: N E Ēvele Parish Culture Centre Ēvele, Ēveles pagasts Ēvele Parish Culture Centre, formerly Ēvele s rectory, is the oldest stone house in Ēvele. At the church convention in spring 1784, it was decided to build a new priest s house. Chief Lieutenant von Sīvers decided to build it for 1,000 thalars from Rencēnu Manor manufactured materials. GPS: N E Jaungaiķēni Jaungaiķēni, Kauguru pagasts Jaungaiķēni is the place to go when you want to relax from the bustle of the city and enjoy the peace of the countryside. GPS: N E Lisa s Estuary into Dutka Lake Dutka, Trikātas pagasts Lisa is the left tributary of Abuls with a length of 26 km. In the lower part it has a large lake flow, passing through the Dutka, Panna and Church lakes in a total length of 4 km. There has been a Dutka Manor on the coast. The name of the lake might have originated from the word "dute" found in the Mielenbah-Endzelin dictionary, which is explained by "the hand had been ripped of the arm, only dute remained", because Lake Dutka concludes a series of lakes. German Forest Firebreak (Vācu stiga) Trikātas pagasts At the firebreak in the area around 33 ha can be seen larger and smaller in-depth rectangular fields with flank edges (caponiers). They were created by German army soldiers in 1944 at the end of World War II. In the forest, before the retreat, the light and heavy artillery of the German army was localized - cannons, tanks, motorcycles, etc., creating a landfill.
