1 Calendar of Events November 20, November 25, 2018 Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education 1100 N Main St Ann Arbor, MI nationaloffice@aore.org Backpacking Eagle Rock Loop, AR Eagle Rock Loop, Arkansas All day Sarah Schneider, sschneider@rec.tamu.edu Come explore the rugged hills full of pine and hardwood along the Little Missouri River on the longest loop trail in Arkansas. This 26.4 mile loop winds through the unique Ouachita Mountains offering breathtaking views and refreshing mountain air. This Thanksgiving Break trip includes transportation, equipment, instruction, and food. December 1, December 4, 2018 Clinical First Responder Asheville, NC TBD 10 a.m Day 1-3pm Day 4 Scott Bandoroff, Ph.D., scott@peakexperiencetraining.com Outdoor Adventure practitioners rely on technical and interpersonal skills to create transformative experiences for their participants. While many formal trainings and certifications focus on technical skills, very few programs focus primarily on the interpersonal skills. To fill this gap, the Clinical First Responder (CFR) was developed to train non-clinician wilderness guides to competently assist in the care and treatment of clients with psychological, emotional, and behavioral issues in adventure/wilderness therapy programs. Naturally students in any outdoor adventure program can react similarly when stretching their comfort zones, and adventure leaders must recognize and act decisively to guide their participants through these challenging experiences. CFR provides foundational skills to help with that including effective communication, emotional regulation and de-escalation, and group dynamics and facilitation in addition to other essential tools to help facilitate any quality and safe adventure outing. December 16, December 22, 2018 Chisos Mountains Hiking Big Bend National Park, TX Big Bend National Park Multiple days Sarah Schneider, sschneider@rec.tamu.edu In some of the highest terrain in Texas, explore the trails of Big Bend National Park's Chisos Mountains. This offers some of the most breathtaking views in one of the most remote parts of the Lonestar State. This Winter Break trip includes transportation, equipment, instruction, and food. Page 1/9

The WFR course is designed to provide you with the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations. Classroom lectures and demonstrations are combined with realistic scenarios where mock patients will challenge you to integrate your learning. Learning takes place both in the classroom and in outdoor settings regardless of weather conditions. Come prepared for wet, muddy, cold or hot environments. Prerequisites: No previous first aid training is required. You must be 16 years old to attend this course. Certification: Participants are required to pass both written and practical examinations to obtain WFR and CPR certification. Successful course completion earns you a WMI Adult & Child CPR certification and a WMI Wilderness First Responder certification. EMTs will earn a Wilderness EMT certification. All certifications are current for two years. Should I take the WFR or WFA? The WFA is a two day course that primarily focuses on the basic of how to respond to an emergency situation in a remote area. This is perfect for people who are on remote day hikes or shorter trips with friends. This class really focuses on the Patient Assessment System and how to start making decisions on patient care.
