FROM THEIR EXCELLENCIES Unto the populace of the Citadel do your Baron and Baroness send greetings. It is our sincere wish that these letters find you in health, happiness and prosperity. Things have been very busy, and the months are flying by with careless abandon. While Coronation was cold and grey, the event was warmed by the hospitality and generosity of the people of Unser Hafen. It is with great joy that we extend our congratulations to TRM Boleslav and Astridr. Outlandish was a study in conflicting weather as usual. We experienced all four seasons during our time there. From freezing rain to baking heat we had the gamut of weather. Our most hearty congratulations to Her Excellency Constance for her offer of admittance into the Right Noble Order of the Pellican! Her Excellency Aine, Lord Wolf, Vicomte Berold, and Lord Herbert brought in a fair sized sum (7 Balthazots total, nearly 1/4 th of the total fund raiser) for the Kingdom Travel Fund and for the medical care of fellow Outlander. Lord Herbert also brought home prizes for Most Chivalrous in the Citadel Speedlist, and 3 rd place in the Templar Tourchlight Tournament. First place in the Citadel Speedlist tournaments was taken by His Excellency Alrik for heavy, and Don Tristan for rapier. This was Don Tristan s 5 th time for victory in our list. Lord Angus from Fontaine took Most Chivalrous for our rapier list. We would like to extend our most heartfelt appreciation to those that took care of us over the past few events. We truly would not be able to represent the Citadel without their help. Additional thanks go to everybody who came and assisted with making Outlandish to be a Grand event. We will be having Water Wars and a Populace meeting on June 1 st. As well, please plan to attend our Citadel Arts and Sciences event on June 21 st, and the Cloudcroft Renfaire on June 28 th. We had great success last year at the Cloudcroft Renfaire recruiting and making contact with existing members. We hope to repeat that this year, but we ll need all the help we can get. In Service, Nikolaus and Aine Baron and Baroness of the Citadel of the Southern Pass 4

FROM THE SENESCHAL Greet the day Citadellians. June promises to be a fun filled month for the members of the barony! For all you archers and want to be archers, don t forget Blackwater Keep s Archery Extravaganza the first weekend of June. I can't wait but then again, I am hoping to attain a higher ranking in my archery standings. Later in June the Barony will host it s A & S Collegium / Competition and the day after that you guessed it Unbelted Tournament #8, (Ax & Shield) will be fought. The last weekend of June will see members of the Barony travel to Cloudcroft for their Ren Faire. Come up to the cool pines of Southern New Mexico. (Yes, this paragraph comes straight out of the LAST few Month s letters as it will until we can all get back to riding horse flesh, but it is still as pertinent and important now as it was then) On a more practical and economic note, with the price of petrol increasing it seems every day, please think of looking to antiquity and returning to the ancient and honorable method of eventing called car pooling. Yes, there is nothing like getting into a vehicle with folks you know, or don t, and traveling for a few hours at a time and just being able to talk, debate and yes, even argue the finer points of everything! It s ecologically sound and a sure fire better way to get to events safer (no falling asleep alone at the wheel), cheaper (because not everyone is as rich as a TemplarJ), and more fun (because Baroness Shahrnavaz says so!) than just going it alone! On a note closer to home, the Citadel Officers Corp is always looking for folks who would like to become a deputy to an office. Learn the ropes without the hassle of actually being that officer! See how the running of the Barony is accomplished without having any of the responsibility! Be a part of a fine group of folks who keep your Barony running like the well oiled machine that it is! Join the Officer Corp and see the Known World! OK, so not the Known World, but the best part of it your own home barony! Be well and be safe Citadellians - Berold, Seneschal BUSINESS/OFFICERS MEETING Business Meetings are on the FIRST Thursday of the month, 6:30 pm at Vicomte Berold's estate (6013 Alcalde). For full directions, either see the events section of http://www.scaelpaso.org or call Vicomte Berold at (915)585-3155. This meeting is mandatory for officers (in the event of an emergency, or inability to attend, please contact Vicomte Berold to arrange for your report). Business meetings are open to all members of the SCA interested in finding out more about how the Citadel and the SCA function behind the scenes, and anyone is welcome! 5

Updates http://www.scaelpaso.org/artsci-comp.html The year is 1200 AD or 578 in the Saracen reckoning. Saladin is dead and his sons are fighting over his realm. The remnants of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the upstart Caesar of the Franks are also squabbling over succession of the throne in Cyprus. For the Golden City on the Bosporus, times are looking good. The throne of the ancient Caesars is secure again. The streets of the city and its courts throng with Franks, Saracens, Persians, Venetians, and crusader knights. Few could have expected that within four years the City of Constantine would fall to a new crusader army! For now, join us to celebrate the last days of an ancient civilization, and to pursue the Arts and Sciences in a competition and collegium in the Barony of the Citadel. The morning will be devoted to the competition for the Citadel Champion of the Arts and Sciences. This competition will be open to members of the Barony only. However we will also have a competition for entries from other areas. Anyone is also encouraged to bring items just for display. Entries in brewing and vinting will be allowed but there can be tasting for the purposes of judging only For lunch there will be a separate competition in the form of a pot-luck feast in the theme of Eastern and Mediterranean cooking. Judging will be by Populace s Choice with a prize given to the winner of the best entry. Anyone is encouraged to bring noncompeting dishes also. In the afternoon there will be classes on a wide variety of subjects. Youth activities and classes will also be available. Finally we will round out the evening with a light buffet, singing, and dancing. Directions from LasCruces: Take I10 south to El Paso. Exit at Transmountain (Canutillo exit). Follow Transmountain east over the mountain to the Patriot Highway (US 54). And know'st thou what the Ansteorrans name cottage pie? But nay, their tongues, for speech and taste alike Are strange to ours, with their own history: They knoweth not a cottage from a house. Hachis Parmentier. Cream is but cream, only they say la crème. Say they not cottage pie, in their own tongue? I know not; I visited no inn where't could be bought. What say they then, pray? Hachis Parmentier! What name they cream? What do they name black pudding? 10
