Sir Pembroke, a knight of the West is offering a class on Sunday to all those interested. A Grand Siege cooking competition will be happening: Read the following for more information! For many months Wastekeep has been under siege. The invaders have burned the surrounding countryside. Supplies are dwindling, but the spring festival is fast approaching and the Baron knows that little could be worse for his populace's morale than for the holiday to go unobserved. SO Baron Styrkarr has ordered the Sergeantry to scour the keep for any foodstuffs that can be found, and to bring the greatest cooks in the barony, as well as those great traveling cooks who have been trapped by the siege. Wastekeep will not be deprived of its Springfest!! Contestants (or teams of contestants) will be provided with the ingredients below and tasked with creating a meal (that likely will contain a few different dishes). The results will be judged during the feast. Ingredients that will be provided are: goat meat, 2 eggs, apple cider vinegar, olive oil, honey, asiago cheese, lentils, dried mushrooms, dried adriatic figs, whole wheat flour, Almonds, cabbage, turnips, onion. No limits on spices. A selection of spices will be available or you may use your own. You may also bring on personal ingredient that you have stashed away during the long siege. May be fresh. May not be the majority of any dish. If you are planning on or thinking about participating, have questions please Phillip de Mantel at jepainter@gmail.com. 5

Greetings, Barony of Wastekeep Rapier Championship Tournament at Springfest Scheduled for 9:30 AM Sunday June 3rd I became the rapier champion of Wastekeep by defeating a knight using an offhand squire, by using a rapier and off-hand cadet, Rowland Greene. The prize was entertaining Baroness Dagrún Stjarna. She kept a contagious smile and inspiring laugh, despite my display of skill, which left her beloved Baron Styrkarr in the grass, grasping the belt of the dead squire Philip de Mantel. This year my goal is to continue to please the baroness to keep her laughing and smiling as we join together to test our rapier fighting skills to determine the next rapier champion for the Barony of Wastekeep. All combatants will use a combination of rapier and a random off-hand parrying device. Don Jack Tyler is assisting me in gathering usable, suitable and yet entertaining items for rapier fighters to hold in their off-hand. The fickle hand of fate will guide dice to determine what they are to use in their defense. If destiny provides an item that displeases Baroness Dagrún Stjarna, she may decide to change the fighter s fate and provide an alternative. As out-going rapier champion, I wish to provide her with a champion that bears the necessary fighting skills to succeed with a rapier, and the wit to entertain her. Prepare yourself. You must be deadly and charming. Andrew Williams Order of the White Scarf Rapier Champion for the Barony of Wastekeep 8
Wastekeep Baronial Council Minutes May 10, 2012 Attendance: Catriona, Dyon, Marcia, Ysabella, Inguz, Meghan, Ulrik, Thorkell, Stykarr, Stjarna, Gudrun, Ysabella, Viktoria, Luaithrenn Call to order: The meeting was called to order by the Seneschal at 6:30 at Round Table Pizza in Pasco. Approval of minutes: The April minutes were approved as presented in The Word. Old business: Baronial Library: Sorting of the original library for discards still needs to be completed but no date has been set for the next meeting. Hopefully we will have some of those already discarded available for sale at Springfest. Pavilion committee: They have not met since the last Council meeting. Her Excellency said Tai is making tents again, and is still finalizing a canvas supplier. We are talking about redoing the top and/or buying a travel pavilion, possibly one like Tiernan and Miranda s. At May Crown the committee will work on taking photos of pavilions that look like something we might want for a travel pavilion for the Baron and Baroness. Greenwood: We have decided that we will not be running a food booth or doing demos at Greenwood this year due to many members having scheduling conflicts. We made under $500 on the food sales last year, so we decided that the stress was not worth the profit. We still plan to do the castle rental and set up for $ Springfest: Contests will include siege cooking, heraldry in your encampment, and heraldry to identify your child. There will be dancing Friday night and dance classes on Saturday. There will be a potluck feast with the barony supplying beef and pork. Contact Phillip if you want to participate in the siege cooking. Set up for the event will start at noon. There will be a sale of lost found & books at Springfest. There is no charge for RVs. Port a Potty and showers will be available. The park has a $10 merchant fee. A motion was passed to spend $ to haul the trailer to Crown. Darby and Trent will haul it. Seneschal: He received a couple of quarterly reports but everyone needs to 9
make sure that they send copies to him now and to the Baron and Baroness. He has put those report deadlines up on the calendar and will send a reminder a week in advance. If you are going to stay in your office and your two years are up, please check with your Kingdom superior and let them know that you are continuing and need your warrant to be renewed. Baron & Baroness: Demo on May 15 th at Enterprise Middle School. The regular teacher may be out. The teacher contact said they may have the media come in. Ysabella said we could talk to them as long as we make sure someone responsible and knowledgeable. We need to be there by 7:30 to set up. It will run from 8:00 until about 11. They will be attending May Crown, Grand Thing and Springfest. They will be leaving in June and back on December 18. Sgts tourney: It will cost Her Excellency about $1700 to come back for Sergeants. She wants to make sure there are candidates that are going to follow through before she buys the ticket. She wondered how people would feel about having the tournament or part of it without her, and having the swearing in later. There was discussion about doing it at Yule Feast, maybe with some of the testing done in advance. There was discussion about looking for a Yule site that would allow fighting indoors. Yule Feast will be set for December 22 nd when Their Excellencies will be back. Reeve: We have $ in savings and $ for a total of $7, The check to the kingdom for our share of the settlement has cleared. Her report is in. She hasn t had a reply to her inquiry about her warrant. Chamberlain: NNTR Chronicler: NNTR: Master of Stables/Dean of Fence: He bought a bag for the new armor. We have arms and gambuson to go to the second kit. We have the first set on hand. Ulrik hosted another armoring workshop last weekend. Ulrik has created a baronial armor box that he will be bringing to events for armor repair. His Excellency has arranged for Sir Pembroke to come to practice with us. We talked about having him come on the Sunday of Springfest. If he can come we will comp his fee. Youth: He has the new helmets in and is going to paint them. He is hoping to get his daughter s set done this weekend and a loaner set. He would like to run an informal class at Springfest, for new kids interested. Baronial Archer: Nothing to report. Lists: She has asked local fighters to send her their information about their authorizations for marshalls. The Kingdom Lists mistress had a baby and hasn t gotten back to her with her warrant yet. Chatelaine: He would like to thank Marcia, Her Excellency and others for helping with newcomers in the park. There has been a lot of public response so come and talk. We need to update the brochure to take out the word boffer. 10
Gold Key, Greteboke, NNTR Arts: Marcia has extra surveys if anyone didn t get to fill them out. She reported on results from the surveys which were published in the May issue of The Word. Mike Botu is willing to teach leatherwork. Mairghread has volunteered to teach charter and scroll work. Marcia bought the big roll of paper she discussed at the last meeting. She plans to use it to make patterns when we are sure what we want and then we will sell them to cover costs. Marcia plans to start bringing cookbooks to practice so that people can look at recipes. The gambuson is finished. It may need to be taken in a little on the neck. She may have to change the attachment method for pauldrons. She has about a ten page write up at this point. Family Activity Coordinator: There will be a favor making class and open play activities. Pages: Vickie is interested and Her Excellency is thinking of stepping down since she is going to be gone. Ithra, Library: NNTR Canton: They found an archery range that has a rate for non profits. They have four openings for officers. The next council meeting will be June 14. Ulrik s deputy will run the meeting.
