From the Seneschal s Pen I wish I didn t have to start with sad news, but my heartfelt sympathies go to Her Excellency Brig on the recent passing of her father, Wayne W. Buck Walters. Thank you to everyone who helped out at Ymir in Their Excellencies absence. On a more pleasant note, I now have a deputy Baronial Seneschal to help me: Lady Caitríona inghean Ghiolla Phádraig. Thank you to Lady Birna isleifsdottir and to Lady Azzah al Nadirah who also expressed their interest in the position. Thanks, also, go to Lady Marie Helene of the New Forest who has served this barony well as its Minister of Arts & Sciences for quite a few years. She has been an excellent source of knowledge and information about things Medieval, as well as tasty goodies from the kitchen. She is being succeeded by Mistress Deirdre Morgan. At the risk of inadvertently missing a name or two, quite a few members of Nottinghill Coill received awards at recent events. At Atlantian Twelfth Night, Mistress Etain of Sutherland became a member of the Order of the White Scarf for her prowess on the rapier field; Lady Caitriona ighean Ghiolla Phadraig was inducted into Atlantia s Order of the Golden Dolphin; Lady Rose Ui Mhaille and Lady Catguistl of Tintagol received the baronial Award of the Golden Cord, for service; Baron Lucien de la Rochelle and Lord Brendan Caiside were given the Baroness Award of Courtesy; and Lord Axum O Neal became a member of the barony s Order of the Coill s Muse, for excellence in the Arts & Sciences. At the Tourney of Manannan mac Lir, in the Barony of Hidden Mountain, Lord Draco of Brockore was named a Friend of the Mountain for all his service, particularly as an MoL at their events. At Nottinghill Coill s Baronial Birthday & Investiture, the following individuals were recognized: Lady Julianna ad Aquam received both the baronial Award of the Golden Cord AND her Award of Arms; Juliana ad Aguam received her Award of Arms; Lord Axum was given the Baroness Award of Courtesy from our former Baroness Ariel for all the help he provided to her during her tenure; Lady Caitriona received the Baron s Award of Excellence from her husband (our former Baron) Takeda for all her love and support during his tenure; Baron Takeda (being already a Court Baron) was granted Supporters by Their Majesties. These additions to his Coat of Arms were specified to be a donkey and a sloth. (Here s a link to his new and improved Arms: [Click here for link}). Baroness Ariel was given the title of Court Baroness, and a lovely coronet crafted by Lord Talan Gof. Baron Lucien and Mistress Brig ingen Erennaigh were invested as the
13th Baronage of our lands. And Lady Abigael of Inishowen, Lady Reynsa Kyferin, and Lord Ulric von Mainz received their Awards of Arms. Oops I almost missed one. Lady Janna of Falcon Cree at long last received the Baron s Award of Excellence. Why at long last? Because the award formally was given to her last summer at War Orphans Pity Party (aka WOPP), but the scroll didn t catch up to her until Baronial Birthday. If you know of someone who you believe deserves similar recognition, make sure that Their Majesties or Their Excellencies know of it. For Kingdom awards, here is the link to the recommendation page: For Baronial awards, use the following link: [Click Here] There is one final piece of information that applies to anyone and everyone who holds an authorization in any of the SCA s martial activities. This comes from the office of the Kingdom Minister of the List (MoL): As previously announced, this system [the new on-line MoL authorization system] will be based on the Atlantia Enterprise Login (AEL) system used for pollings and registration for University. Fighters will be able to log in to the system to print their own authorization card. Several other kingdoms have already implemented similar systems with a significant amount of success. Fighters, MOLs, and Marshals If you do not have an AEL, please get one. In order to support this migration, we will need every fighter to renew their authorization on the new forms. MOLs are being authorized to take these renewals at events, meetings, fighter practices, etc. For the next year, renewals are free and new authorizations or add on weapons forms are $1. The renewal will extend your authorization expiration to four years from the date of renewal. After this initial year push to get every fighter renewed, fighters will have the option to renew on line at no charge. The system will send you a reminder three months prior to your authorization expiring. For those with platinum cards, after the initial year, the renewal will remain $1 to receive an updated platinum card. New platinum cards are still available for a $10 fee which goes directly to the Kingdom Travel Fund. So, what s coming up in the area in the near future? Hidden Mountain Baronial Birthday (March 25-27); Blades & Bows (hosted by the Canton of Brockore Abbey but held in the Canton of Ritterwald, April 8-10), and Tourney of the Dragon (hosted by the Canton of St. Georges, April ) I look forward to seeing many of you at these events. Yours in service to The Dream and the barony, Dame Morwenna Trevethan Baronial Seneschal
Greetings into the populace of the great Barony of Nottinghill Coill War had come to the lands of our neighbors far to the south! At the time of this writing, Gulf Wars is just three weeks away! His Excellency will be travelling to Meredies to support the Crown of Atlantia as we join in the fray. His Excellency will be bringing tabards for any who wish to represent the Barony to wear, and We ask that any Champions attending Gulf Wars please wear their tabards during activities in which they are Champions. To all who are making the journey, please travel safe and bear with you the honor and might of Nottinghill Coill! Atlantia will soon have new Monarchs! If anyone has anything they would like to contribute to the gift basket that We will be presenting at Coronation, please let Her Excellancy or Lord Etienne know so that we can make arrangements to meet up. On a personal note, Her Excellency would like to thank you all so very much for the kind words of love and support given at the sudden passing of Her beloved father. It has been a difficult time for Our family, and knowing that so many of you were thinking of us has been a blessing. Humbly, Baron Lucien de La Rochelle and Baroness Brig ingen Erennaigh Baron and Baroness of Nottinghill Coill
The Book of Kells By E tienne Le Mons d Anjou Leabhar Cheanannais (the Book of Kells) is an illuminated manuscript, written in Latin, which contains the four Gospels of the New Testament with various prefatory texts and tables. While folklore and tradition suggest that it was created in the time of Saint Columba ( AD) or possibly even written by his own hand, most actual evidence suggests that the composition was created around 800 AD. The book was long housed in the Abbey of Kells which gave the book its common name. While the book has tremendous historical and religious significance, it is considered a masterwork of both calligraphy and Hiberno- Saxon illumination. Ireland views the Book of Kells as one of its finest national treasures and is now stored at Trinity College in Dublin. It is kept under bullet-proof glass and extremely tight security. The Book of Kells is written on calf vellum and the text is written between two ruled lines. Along side the text of the book, there are ten surviving full-page painted decorations (or miniatures), thirteen full pages of decorated text, and eight of the ten pages of canon tables are extensively decorated. The decorations continue throughout the pages, with decorated initials and figures of humans or animals (often twisted and tied into complex knotwork). In fact, only two of the surviving pages have no decoration. The decorations are created using many different types of pigments. As is typical in Insular artwork, there was no use of gold or silver leaf. Instead, the artists drew on other valuable pigments to make the work stand out, including ultramarine, verdigris, indigo and lapis lazuli. One of the full-page images contains the oldest extant image of the Virgin Mary in manuscript. This image in particular is interesting because the figure is shown in a a frontal and three-quarter pose. This particular style is very reminiscent of the of Saint Cuthbert s coffin, another treasure, although this one is housed in the Cathedral. The iconography of the miniature of the Virgin Mary may be derived Eastern or Coptic design. a Western mixture of carved lid Durham from an The large pieces are not the only important works within the Book of Kells. No two decorations in the book are the same and the decorated initials and knotted animals are used in many pieces of modern decoration, including designs used in clothing, painting, pottery, and other artwork. In the Book of Kells, the knotted animals were normally used to mark a turn-in-the-path (where a line is finished in a space above or below the original line) or to cover mistakes. 8 Greetings, Good Gentles of this fine Barony! As you know, April 2nd will be the day of Coronation for the heirs, Dietrich and Thora, and a great day for our fine kingdom indeed. But if you are unable to make the journey to see the transition of the Crowns, fear not. You may serve your Kingdom in another way! Tartan Day South has become one of our largest opportunities to demo the SCA to the public at large. It will be held on April 2, 2016 at the Historic Columbia Speedway in Cayce, SC. And we need YOU! Fighters, dancers, artisans are needed to share our Dream of the past. Last year there were about people in attendance and more are expected this year. Geldamar and I are coordinating our efforts for the demo this year, and we will need to have a list of volunteers who plan to attend. We will have more information available on the group lists as it comes available, as well as a Facebook page for planning. Feel free to contact either of us with questions or ideas for this wonderful demo. In Service, Mistress Etain of Sutherland PS. There is free Celtic music on the Friday night before and during the day of the event. Crash space may be available.

The Back Page My search for a deputy is over. A good gentle in my home Canton has decided to step up and assume duties. Be on the lookout for her work coming soon! So did you go to Ymir? Did you see the elevations that happened through the day? I had the chance to retain for TRH and was able to get a front seat at these ceremonies. It s amazing the words that people speak about each other, not just in court or on the field. Quieter words among friends and fires hold so much more worth than anyone knows. The Laurel and the Pelican are two beloved orders, and two gentles were beyond deserving to receive those medallions. The Chronicler would like to thank: Lady Machteld Cleine, for making our beloved Queen look beyond fabulous Mistress Etain, for her continued support The Baronage of Nottinghill Coill and Hawkwood Lord Carrick Mac Manus, a dear friend and newest Sergeant in St. Aidan And Readers Like You So did you enjoy this issue of the Quill? Do you have a question about a submission or have something to submit? We re always looking for content for the Quill!! Please the Baronial Chronicler at malik.rawandi@gmail.com for anything further This, put together with mine hand, in service to the Baronage and the Crowns and Heirs of Atlantia. For glory, honor, and ink. Malik ibn-da ud al-rawandi Baronial Chronicler Ride on, Nottinghill. Ride on.
