2 Letter from the President He (Martin Luther King, Jr) said they lived meaningful lives, and they died nobly. They say to each of us, Dr. King said, black and white alike, that we must substitute courage for caution. They say to us that we must be concerned not merely with [about] who murdered them, but about the system, the way of life, the philosophy which produced the murderers. Their death says to us that we must work passionately and unrelentingly for the realization of the American Dream. Martin Luther King, Jr, reflecting on the four Black children killed in a church bombing nearly 50 years ago, and echoed by President Obama in his speech on the Charleston massacre.this is a very different President s message than I want to have to write. Once again, a young man echoing the racism of our country struck out in a brutal way. In our own way, we are trying to work unrelentingly for the American Dream of friendship and cooperation between people of different colors and beliefs here in North Rosedale Park. I am truly honored to work with a board that is in that same spirit. As you celebrate the fourth of July and move through our wonderful upcoming activities including the River Cruise, August 16 and our Steak Roast, September 11, and our Homecoming October 16,17 and 18, reach out to your neighbors and friends. Do not tolerate or acquiesce to racism or ignorance. We are in this all together, if we allow ourselves to be. I hope we do. Susan Steigerwalt June 18,2015 Important Announcement : North Rosedale Park Residents We need every resident to pay their association dues! The North Rosedale Park Civic Association depends on your dues to support the jewel of our neighborhood, the Community House and grounds. We are the only neighborhood in Detroit that owns such a wonderful place for residents to gather, children to play, and neighborhood issues to be discussed. But the building and the grounds can't support themselves. While we generate a fair amount of revenue from the rental of the Community House, the dues provide the backbone of our finances. As a dues paying member of the NRPCA, you are part owner of the Community House and grounds and we desperately need your support. Take responsibility for contributing your financial share to keep our community alive. Walk Your Heart to Health with Walk In The Park Walking Group Welcome everyone! 3 Behind the Footlights Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 Roger Loeb Originally a one-woman show, the Park Players fall production of Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, will be cast with a wide variety of actors. Roles will be determined without restrictions based on the gender, race, ethnicity, or age of the character being portrayed. Media will be used to project the actual speakers who were well-known and unknown individuals responding to the LA riots of The riots followed the not-guilty verdicts for the police officers charged (and videotaped) with the beating of Rodney King. The playwright, Anna Deavere Smith, conducted about 175 interviews for the project. For each performance, she would select of the monologues to present. Similarly, during the auditions, Lynch Travis (our director) will determine which monologues we will perform in November. Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 premiered on May 23, 1993 in Los Angeles. It received nearly unanimous critical acclaim at that time. Subsequent productions have since gained favorable notices. Honors include the Obie, the Drama Desk award, Outer Critics Circle awards, and two Tony nominations. "Although Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 was also nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, the Pulitzer jury disqualified it on the grounds that it was not fictional and could only be performed by the interviewer-playwright herself. More than anything else, that decision reflects a critical inability to pigeonhole the work into some familiar category. The play's kinship with the documentary is unquestioned, but it simply escapes any easy classification. Its intention is clear, however; the piece documents a critical time of racial division and civil unrest, not to place blame for what happened, but to help the process of healing through a kaleidoscopic and sympathetic rendering of different viewpoints." (quoted from the Study Guide). Our auditions will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 7:00pm and Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1:00pm, in the North Rosedale Park Community House. Rehearsals are typically held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, and Sunday afternoons. Check back here in the coming months for additional information about the roles and the audition process. 5 A Memory of 3 Friends by Marcia Closson A promise made is a debt unpaid This quotation from The Cremation of Sam McGee, by Robert W. Service has come to weigh heavily on my mind in the last few days. A year ago, I promised to write a short memorial for three of my North Rosedale Park friends who died in 2014, but as yet have not fulfilled my promise. So today, one year after they passed into eternity, I submit my tributes to these three wonderful men who gave their time, talents, and love to the North Rosedale Park Community. In Memoriam Frank Olivero: December 16, 1930 to May 26, 2014 Funeral, Christ the King Church, May 29, 2014 Frank was born and raised in Detroit. He was an engineer for Ford Motor Co., a veteran of the Korean War, a devoted husband, loving father of two daughters, proud grandfather of 4 grandchildren, and devoted caretaker of his sister. He cared deeply about equality and the Civil Rights Movement and quietly went about helping others during his whole life. He played an active role in Christ the King Church, volunteered for 25 years at St Christine s soup kitchen, and among other things, was a literacy volunteer tutor. He was an active member of Park Players, often serving as House Manager during the run of a play and a Life Member of the NRPCA. Frank will be remembered by his friends and neighbors as a kind, gentle, non-judgmental, patient, and competent person. July 2015 Volume 91 In Memoriam Glen Roy Driesbach: May 15, 1928 to July 8, 2014 Funeral, Ward Presbyterian Church, July, 2014 Glen grew up in Northwest Detroit. He was Track Captain at Redford High School, a Corporal at Fort Monmouth, and a physical education teacher for 36 years at the Grayling School in Detroit. From 1975 to 2004, while teaching at Grayling, Glen was also the president of the American Polish Co. which made Porter s Friend Silver Polish. He was a member of the American Legion Post 390 a member of the Ward Presbyterian Church, and a Life Member of the NRPCA. Glen and his wife, Nancy, were married for 62 years. They raised two daughters and a son in North Rosedale Park. For 25 years, Glen led the June Day Parade for Post 390 along with three other veterans who lived in North Rosedale Park. Glen liked to tell stories, and he especially loved a good joke. He had an amazing memory for statistics and could quote Tiger facts from years back. He enjoyed making floats for the June Day Parade with his children and other children on Ashton. According to his son-in-law, Glen was an oldfashioned guy with strong morals, who loved his wife, his three children, his seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren above all else. He was held in esteem by his friends and neighbors in North Rosedale Park because of the contributions he made to the Community for so many decades. z He In Memoriam Morris Harold Goodman: April 8, 1948 to August 1, 2014 Funeral, Northwest Unitarian Universalist Church, August 4, 2014 In the words of Alex Goodman, Morris s younger son, Morris was an Attorney, an Addict, a Rotarian, a Unitarian, a Democrat, a proud Detroiter, and a proud Dearbornite, but he was he was most proud of himself as a writer. He wrote for The Dearborn Press and Guide during the last 8 years of his life sharing his ideas on local and national politics, addiction, cancer, theatre, good books, and the sheer joy of creating a good piece of writing that inspired and moved a reader. Morris was a doer. He was a big, blustery man who had a brilliant mind and a kind, warm heart. He and his wife, Sally, and their two sons lived in North Rosedale Park across from the Park for several years before moving to Dearborn. While residing in the Park, Morris chaired the local business association which eventually morphed into GRDC, the Grandmont, Rosedale Development Corporation. He was also a member of the NRPCA Board of Directors, and a devoted member of The Park Players. No matter what the situation, Morris and Sally could readily come up with a song which fit the occasion. Morris and Sally shared their lives for 38 years, raised two sons, and enjoyed a beautiful grandson before he died. Morris was a fighter. He lived with colitis since his 20 s, survived the removal of his colon in 1980, recovered from colon cancer in 2007, but eventually succumbed to pancreatic cancer in August, According to Alex, Morris lived up to his name: he was a Good Man who wanted nothing more than to save the world and have people thank him for it. was unforgettable. 5
