1 GENERAL INFORMATION GHANA (Courtesy PTO) Anyone who has ever been a part of it knows that the world of International schools is a special one. Selecting the right school for your child can be a challenging exercise, particularly if you are moving to Africa for the first time. The LCS Welcome committee has been formed to give you an insight into our community, the members of this committee will help, guide & support you so you & your family can have a smooth transition in to our school community as well as in Ghana. The PTO & Welcome committee has put together this information with helpful hints and practical recommendations, including a list of physicians & emergency contacts. PTO will also organize several events along with the Welcome Committee starting with Welcome brunch on August 22, 2011 so that the new parents can get a chance to meet the returning parents. In conjunction with the PTO there are several opportunities for those of you who would like to get involved in the activities of LCS. There are many functions throughout the year like International Day Bazaar, Sporting events, Picnics which always need a helping hand. Below is an informal list of helpful numbers but please note that the information is not limited to the listing and we recommend either purchasing the No Worries Ghana latest publication which is an indispensable insider s guide to Ghana along with the maps of Ghana. SUPERMARKETS / HOUSE WARES: Koala Supermarket: Located on Danquah Circle in Osu (don t forget to go upstairs) Maxmart Supermarket: There are 2 stores in Accra, one on Liberation road diagonally opposite the Golden Tulip Hotel. The other property is in East Legon at the A & C Mall. Lara Mart: Full service grocery store with butcher. Located on Oxford Street, down the photo Club across the street from Bywel s Osu. Shoprite Supermarket: Located in Accra Mall Orca Deco: Décor, house wares, children s toys, furniture and fabrics. Located 4 Graphic road, Accra between Ghana Breweries and Nkrumah Circle (Blue building with Orca Whale detail) Palace Departmental Store: Located on Spintex Road. This shop sells house wares, curtains, appliances, gardening equipments, fabric as well as exercise equipments. Melcoms: Various stores throughout the country. Here you will find electronics, furniture, limited tinned goods, curtain and other appliances. HEALTH & EMERGENCY SERVICES: AMBULANCES: WARA: (West African Rescue Association) 24/7 Health clinic and Medical evacuation and rescue services for its members by air and by ground ambulance. It is the leading ambulance service for professional

Small family-practice clinic with ultrasound, ecocardiogram, vaccination facilities available. ENTERTAINMENT: Hollywood City Entertainment Center: / It s a movie theater with 50 seats, offers children s matinees during school breaks and weekends. Also has internet service, coffee shop, bar & restaurant.

4 Kiddy Ground: Located at A & C Shopping Center in East Legon Outdoor play, solid plastic slides, swings, play house, trampolines and train ride. They also host birthday parties. Kidz Cottage: Across the road from Galaxy Int l School, Airport West Accra. A modern salon for children to sit inside a boat or car shaped chairs. Outside play area. Silverbird Cinema: located on second floor inside Accra mall. check online listings for latest movies, theaters are fully equipped to international standards. WEEKEND BREAKAWAY RESORTS: (driving times are always traffic dependant) Anomabo: hours west of Accra, good beach for children, pets allowed at a charge. Lou Moon:

Ankroba Beach Resort: / hours West of Accra, ocean view and a nice stroll on the beach Coconut Grove Beach Resort: Located on Elmina Beach. Resort has a swimming pool Whitesands: Upmarket resort, 1 hour drive west of Accra located next to Tills Beach resort Volta Hotel: Located in Akosombo approximately 1 hour form Accra, good view of the Volta Lake. Recommended as a Sunday outing. Afrikiko River Front Resort: / afrikikoleisure@yahoo.com Located in Akosombo on the Volta river below the dam wall, boat trips and pedal boats available. Hillburi: Majestically in the spectacular Akwapim range in the Easter region of Ghana. The resort is approx.45mins drive form Accra along the Aburi road. It also has a lovely pool side. 6 Located in Ada Foah, close to the mouth of the Volta river. Boat trips and swimming pool available. 1 hour 15 mins East of Accra Mole National Park: The park is not easily accessible from Accra but flights to Tamale are available. Animals including elephants, antelopes, buffalos and monkeys amongst others. Kakum National Park: Located approx. 30km North of Cape Coast. Easy day trip from Anomabo and Cape Coast. Famous in Ghana for the 40m high canopy walk from where the forest canopy and bird species can appreciated. Visit this early in the morning as it is more quiet then.
