1 Dear Parents, On behalf of the Les Explorateurs: French Immersion Camp team, I d like to welcome you to the Newman Summer community for June 2013! We have been working together and having a great time this spring designing fun, enriching activities for your child. All activities include many different ways to participate based on different levels of proficiency and a deep understanding of the developmental stages of children in this age group. Since our unifying theme is an active exploration of French and Francophone cultures and arts, we have organized our workshops as a virtual trip around the world: Week 1: French connections: the French Caribbean and Louisiana Week 2: Africa and its influences on French culture Week 3: Tahiti, New Caledonia, Polynesia [Oceania] Week 4: Western Europe: Focus on France s regional diversity and on francophone countries in Europe We will be guided not only by experienced Ecole Bilingue teachers Benoit Cransac and Alison Chanslor, but also by a special friend named Tao, a very special marionette character created by Florine and Raphaël Chassigneux. This character travels all over the world, helping children open their hearts and minds to different cultures and peoples through music and theater. We will meet and travel with Tao through interactive internet activities, songs, and visual arts projects. To learn a bit more about the character Tao, you can visit this website. We are really looking forward to getting to know your child and his or her interests! Through our exploration of French and Francophone culture we will learn and grow together in a way that allows every child to make connections between their own family and community and that of children around the world. Campers dropped off prior to 8:45 or not picked up by 3:45 will be signed in. Parents will be billed for extended care drop-ins at the end of each session. Carpool is not available for Before or After Care. Please walk your camper to and from Home Base located next to the Summer Office, directly across the playground from the main Lower School entrance on Loyola Street. Late Arrival After 9:00 AM, please park and walk your camper inside to the Summer Office, located directly across the playground from the main Lower School entrance on Loyola Street. This is to ensure that your child is properly accounted for. Early Pick Up To collect your camper early, please do so before 3:00 PM from the Summer Office, located directly across the playground from the main Lower School entrance on Loyola Street. Please let us know ahead of time by (NewmanSummer@NewmanSchool.org) that you will be picking up your camper early.* Page 2 of 5

3 *Campers will be brought to the Summer Office once a parent/chaperone has arrived. Lunch/Snack All campers should bring a bag lunch with a drink each day. A daily snack will be provided to all campers. If your child has special dietary needs, it is recommended that you provide a snack in addition to lunch. Carpool & Walker s Gate Drop off Campers may be dropped off on foot or via carpool to the following locations: Pre-K/K - Stern Building entrance at 5310 Loyola Avenue. This option is available for Les Explorateurs campers who have a Pre-K or K-aged sibling who is enrolled in Newman Summer Day Camp s Session 1. 1 st - 5 th Grade - The main Lower School entrance at 5320 Loyola Avenue. For further details and a map, please see the Carpool page at the end of this document. Pick-up You have two options for pick-up: Carpool or Walker s Gate. All campers will go to Carpool unless they are signed up for Walker s Gate. If you have children spanning multiple age groups, please use the carpool line appropriate for the youngest camper. Older campers will be brought to join them. For carpool procedures and routes, please see the Carpool page at the end of this document. Walkers Gate (Pick up only sign up is required) To pick up your camper by foot at 1953 Jefferson Avenue, the Newman cafeteria door, sign up for walker s gate by NewmanSummer@NewmanSchool.org. Campers not picked up by 3:45 will be checked into After Care. * To ensure a safe and smooth dismissal, we ask that you please make one choice for your child s pick-up and stick to it for the summer. * Clothing - Please label everything your child brings to camp. Campers should bring a bathing suit and a towel to be left at camp Wet clothes and towels will be sent home after each use Shorts and t-shirts are recommended All parents are encouraged to send a change of clothes to be left at camp. 4 Special Days and Celebrations Wednesday, June 5: Facial Hair Appreciation Day Check in when you arrive to get your very own mustache! Wednesday, June 12: Superhero Day Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman - all are welcome! Wednesday, June 19: Midsummer Mardi Gras Wear your purple, green, and gold as we try to recreate Mardi Gras in June! Friday, June 21: Splash Day Splash Day is all about water slides and water fun! All campers should have swim suits, towels, sandals/water shoes, and a dry change of clothes. Wednesday, June 26: Star Wars Day Help us transform Newman into a galaxy far, far away! Dress like your favorite character! Costumes are welcomed on our special days and celebrations, but by no means required. Day Camp T-shirt Each camper will receive one camp T-shirt. It is not required attire but may be worn at any time. Additional camp shirts are available for purchase in the Summer Office. Footwear Tennis shoes are most appropriate for camp activities. Lace-up or Merrell-type footwear is also acceptable. Campers may not wear Crocs, sandals, or other open-toed shoes. Sunscreen If your camper requires sunscreen, please apply it before coming to camp. Birthdays Please do not send in birthday treats. Because of dietary concerns and food allergies, we prefer to celebrate birthdays without sharing food amongst campers. Electronics/Cell Phones/Toys We recommend that campers leave all unnecessary personal items at home. Sometimes campers wish to bring toys to share with other campers. This is usually not a problem, but Newman cannot be held responsible for items that get lost, stolen, or broken. In addition, cell phones or other personal electronics may not be used at Day Camp. Cell phones must be turned off and kept in one s bag during the camp day. Swimming For detailed information about our swimming program, please visit During camp registration, you selected one of three options indicating your swim preference: 1) Daily Instructional Swim required daily lessons, plus free swim; Page 4 of 5

5 2) Optional Free Swim free swim when your camper chooses; 3) No Swim your camper does not have permission to swim at camp. To review your selection, log in to the online registration system. Under view completed applications select your camper s application; follow the link to view a printable copy of your application. Please let us know if you would like to change your camper s swimming status. Deconstruction This is a popular elective in which we use tools to take apart old gadgets and electronics. We are always accepting donations! Reasonably sized items, except for CRT monitors and TVs (contain hazardous material) can be dropped off in the Lower School lobby. Page 5 of 5

B Rising 1 st through 8 th grade Campers: Should be dropped off and picked up at the main Lower School entrance, 5320 Loyola Ave. the first door off of Jefferson Ave. Please approach from Loyola Avenue and follow the arrowed route below on map B. Parents with campers spanning multiple age groups: Please use the carpool line appropriate for the youngest camper for both drop- off and pick- up; older campers will be brought to join them. Please do not leave a car unattended in either carpool line. If you wish to come inside, please find a parking space that will not block the flow of carpool.
