2 A WORD FROM BRIAN BUCKINGHAM COVERS, SPECIALIST COVER EXPERT we were sworn to secrecy, but in the knowledge that we have some great covers that we are desperate to show you Dear Collector, Well what a way to start the year with our spectacular Games of Thrones covers, yes another of those blockbuster issues where we were sworn to secrecy, but in the knowledge that we have some great covers that we are desperate to show you. Not a traditional stamp issue, so will please fans and not others, a bit like Star Wars, but we think Royal Mail see this as a new way of attracting people to the hobby. I would of course jump on my soapbox at this point and also say they should make it easier for people to use stamps on letters and not cross them through with pens! Anyway I really like Clair s covers for this issue and there is even a little advert for them online which I think you can find on our twitter and facebook pages. Also sneaked inside this magazine is the first showing of our Votes for Women and RAF Centenary covers, so don t miss these, later in the year is a Captain Cook issue, so those of you who know your stamps will realise that Royal Mail have just missed the TUC issue from the 1968 Anniversaries stamps. We have used this magazine to complete the 5th series listing started in the last magazine, plus there is a nice selection of Postal History and Craig s list of CDS postmarks towards the end. As I have said before with so many small Post Offices closing these are getting harder and harder to find. Finally, this year sees us launch the 6th series, so what a great time to start collecting Buckingham Covers, if you need any convincing have a look at just a few of the great names who have signed our covers on page 13 and helped us raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity. Happy Collecting Brian Austin January 2018 THOMAS EDISON Thomas Edison ( ) has been described as America s greatest inventor who was responsible for an abundance of inventions including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the electric light bulb. Edison held over 1,000 US patents as well as many here in the UK, and his work made a huge contribution to mass communication, industrial research, and electric generation and distribution systems. This stunning letter signed by Edison is on beautifully headed paper from the Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison dated 1st July 1911 and reads I am sending my representative Mr James Ricalton to your part of the world to secure photographically characteristic scenes, life, and industries along your lines: any consideration you may be able to extend to him in the way of transportation will be a personal kindness to me. Edison has an exquisitely graceful signature, and despite being over 100 years old this letter remains in fantastic condition, a superb item. Among his British adversaries he earned a strong reputation for chivalry and the North African campaign has often been called a war without hate. In 1944, Rommel was implicated in the 20 July plot to assassinate Hitler. He was given a choice between committing suicide, in return for assurances that his reputation would remain intact and that his family would not be persecuted following his death, or facing a trial that would result in his disgrace and execution; he chose the former. Rommel was given a state funeral, and it was announced that he had succumbed to his injuries from the strafing of his staff car in Normandy. 26 WARREN HOUSE, SHEARWAY ROAD, FOLKESTONE, KENT CT19 4BF CL201 TEL FAX betty@buckinghamcovers.com

GROUP CAPTAIN GEOFFREY LEONARD CHESHIRE CV OM DSO** DFC ( ) The London Gazette Air Ministry, 8th September 1944 The KING has been graciously pleased to confer the VICTORIA CROSS on the undermentioned officer in recognition of most conspicuous bravery:- Wing Commander Geoffrey Leonard CHESHIRE, D.S.O., D.F.C. (72021), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 617 This officer began his operational career in June Against strongly-defended targets he displayed the courage and determination of an exceptional leader, always ready to accept extra risks to ensure success. He frequently released his bombs from below 2,000 feet. Over Cologne in November, 1940, a shell burst inside his aircraft, blowing out one side and starting a fire; undeterred, he went on to bomb his target. At the end of his first tour of operational duty in January 1941, he volunteered for a second. He pressed home his attacks with the utmost gallantry. When he was posted for instructional duties in 1942, he undertook four more operational missions. He started a third operational tour in August, 1942, when he was given command of a squadron. He led the squadron with outstanding skill on a number of missions before being appointed in March 1943, as a station commander. In October, 1943, he undertook a fourth operational tour, relinquishing the rank of group captain at his own request so that he could again take part in operations. He set to work as the pioneer of a new method of marking enemy targets involving very low flying. In June, 1944, when marking a target in the harbour at Le Havre in broad daylight and without cloud cover, he dived well below the range of the light batteries before releasing his marker-bombs, and he came very near to being destroyed by the strong barrage which concentrated on him. During his fourth tour which ended in July, 1944, Wing Commander Cheshire led his squadron personally on every occasion, always undertaking the most dangerous and difficult task of marking the target alone in the face of strong defences. Wing Commander Cheshire s cold and calculated acceptance of risks is exemplified by his conduct in an experimental attack on Munich in April, Munich was selected, at Wing Commander Cheshire s request, because of the formidable nature of its light anti-aircraft and searchlight defences. He was obliged to follow, in bad weather, a direct route which took him over the defences of Augsburg and thereafter he was continuously under fire. Illuminated from above and below, all guns within range opened fire on him. Diving to 700 feet, he dropped his markers with great precision and began to climb away. He then flew over the city at 1,000 feet to assess the accuracy of his work and direct other aircraft. His own was badly hit by shell fragments but he continued to fly over the target area until he was satisfied that he had done all in his power to ensure success. For a full twelve minutes after leaving the target area he was under withering fire. Wing Commander Cheshire has now completed a total of 100 missions. In four years of fighting against the bitterest opposition he has maintained a record of outstanding personal achievement, placing himself invariably in the forefront of the battle. What he did in the Munich operation was typical of the careful planning, brilliant execution and contempt for danger which has established for Wing Commander CL201 Cheshire a reputation second to none in Bomber Command.

(Supplementary Reserve.) For most conspicuous gallantry on the 15th-16th May 1940, when the platoon under his command was on the south side of the River Dye, astride a blown bridge. During the night a strong attack was beaten off, but about 11 a.m. the enemy again launched a violent attack and pushed forward a bridging party into the sunken bottom of the river. Second Lieutenant Annand attacked this party, but when ammunition ran out he went forward himself over open ground, with total disregard for enemy mortar and machine-gun fire. Reaching the top of the bridge, he drove out the party below, inflicting over twenty casualties with hand grenades. Having been wounded he rejoined his platoon and his wound dressed, and then carried on in command. During the evening another attack was launched and again Second Lieutenant Annand went forward with hand grenades and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. When the order to withdraw was received, he withdrew his platoon, but learning on the way back that his batman was wounded and had been left behind, he returned at once to the former position and brought him back in a wheelbarrow, before losing consciousness as the result of wounds. 62 IN OUR OPINION THE BEST FIRST DAY COVER ALBUM ON THE MARKET! I looked at the available luxury albums and decided that the Safe 800 series was the best for our Buckingham Covers. The 14 ring mechanism is quality nickel-plated easy to use and only available from Safe. The album lies perfectly flat and you can remove pages or covers easily. It has two heavy-duty sheet lifters. The luxury binder is padded and the matching slip-case again looks quality as indeed it is. The leaves are the best available and your first day covers look superb. Yes, they sound expensive with only 11 leaves, but we are selling them well below the proper price so they are a bargain. 70 including postage or 45 tokens Covers not included ALB01 70 Blue ALB01A 70 Red ALB05 70 Blue album for smiler sheets Extra leaves are available at for 10 ALB01L Double Leaves ALB05L Single Leaves Album without slip case - It sounds ridiculous but the slip case is very expensive to produce, so, if you prefer, we can supply the album without a slip case at 50 including postage THE COVER ALBUM BARGAIN AIN WE KEEP SECRET! 20 POST FREE Inside Outside Covers not included SCA01 20 Red SCA01A 20 Blue SCA01B 20 Rail Album You can also claim one for 18 tokens We can offer this great album, containing 15 polypropylene* leaves that will take 60 FDC. It fits our covers perfectly and they look great in it! Available in Red and Dark Blue and now in Brown with Railway Cover Album blocked onto the spine, specifically for your rail collection. *Polypropylene is a clear material which according to the experts is totally safe. Some album leaves are dangerous as they suck out ink from the covers. PVC in particular can be lethal to your covers and if you have old PVC pages in albums the leaves should be replaced. 62 WARREN HOUSE, SHEARWAY ROAD, FOLKESTONE, KENT CT19 4BF CL201 TEL FAX betty@buckinghamcovers.com
