4 Intensive ventilation, unique design Transfer ventilation DUCO at WORK Air extraction The blades wall systems from Duco have been designed for tensive and contuous ventilation. This makes them ideal for ventilative coolg and this is why these blades wall systems tegrate perfectly with Duco s well-developed concepts: DUCO at WORK, DUCO at SCHOOL and DUCO at CARE. Thanks to a combation of natural basic ventilation, door sun protection & ventilative coolg, a healthy, comfortable and energy-efficient door climate can be created a natural way, where the user occupies centre stage. By usg a blades wall, large amounts of fresh air can enter order to cool down the buildg. A precondition for this is that sufficient thermal mass, such as bare concrete components, must exist the buildg order to absorb the cool air. The strong louvre system requires at least a mimum back structure. The system is vandal-proof. 6 > Air flow When selectg a contuous louvre system, there is the choice between aesthetics and practicallity (airflow/water repellancy). There are several ways of choosg the most suitable system. Therefore it is important that you can rely on accurate data and values. Do not hesitate to contact Duco for assistance makg the right choice of system for your project. Free open area (percentage rule) The free open area or percentage rule is based either on the method of physical free area or the method of visual free area. A. 7 Use this method to: > Calculate the dimensions of the contuous louvre system when a mimum net free open area is requested. Gross surface area = net free open area physical free area Example Desired net free open area : 35 m² Desired contuous louvre wall : DucoWall Solid 30Z P2 (physical free area of 48%) Gross surface area = 35 m² 0,48 = 73 m². For a desired width of 20 m, the height of the contuous louvre wall is 3.65 m (73/20). > Calculate the net free open area when the dimensions have already been determed. Net free open area = gross surface area x physical free area Example Surface desired : 20 m (W) x 3.65 m (H) (= 73 m²) Desired type : DucoWall Solid 30Z P2 (physical free area of 48%) Net free open area : 73 m² x 0.48 = 35 m² B. Visual free area largest air-flow surface (A) Visual free area louvre blade pitch (C) The visual free area uses the largest open area rather than the smallest open area. This use however is to be discouraged as the visual free area is no benchmark for the effective free area. Intensive ventilation 7

8 2. K factor The K factor is a value that dicates the aerodynamic resistance of the contuous louvre wall to the air flow. This factor is used when the dimensions of the contuous louvre system should be identified based on air velocity and air flow rate. Unlike the previously mentioned free open area, the K factor takes to account the differg air pressure at the louvre take and exhaust faces. K = Ps (differential air pressure across the contuous louvre system Pa) ρ (air density) x V (air velocity) Any contuous louvre system fitted on an openg will terfere with the free flow of air. In order to determe this resistance, the K factor needs to be calculated. When developg a contuous louvre system, the K factor is determed usg a computer simulation model (EFD) first and then tested. The K factor for air take and exhaust for each type of contuous louvre wall is tabulated the overview table at the end of this brochure. Additionally, the associated C coefficient is given as well, which dicates the ratio of the effective flow area through a contuous louvre wall to the theoretical air flow. A distction is made between : > Ce: For the resistance to air flow at the air let (Entry Loss Coefficient). > Cd : For the resistance to air flow at the air let (Discharge Loss Coefficient). 8

9 Use this method to : > Calculate the surface of the contuous louvre wall based upon the of the selected type of louvre blade, differential air pressure and air flow rate: a. Select a type of louvre blade from the table based on the K factor (K). b. Select the required maximum differential air pressure Pa ( p) c. Select the required air flow rate (Q) d. 10 > Water repellent efficiency The extent to which a contuous louvre wall is repellent to water on the one hand and its water tightness on the other can only be verified through testg. BSRIA is an European leadg-edge dependent research organisation water tightness tests of buildg When tested, the louvre wall was subjected to a simulated rafall of 75 litres per hour and a wd speed of 13 m/s (see diagram). The contuous louvre system is assigned a class relation to the air velocity and the % of water tightness : products. The tests have been designed conjunction with HEVAC (Heatg, Ventilatg and Air Conditiong Manufacturers Association). 40 DucoWall Door Contuous louvre systems are often used to screen technical areas that require permanent ventilation. DucoWall doors can be tegrated to a screen to give an easy acces. A DucoWall door is a louvred door, assembled with blades, mullions and parts from the DucoWall product range. The door matches the surroundg screen to create a perfect unit. DucoWall Door series doors are available as sgle or double leaf and as side or side openg door. The doors may be hung to open from either the left or the right. DucoWall Door series doors are supplied as made tot measure, and when necessary, fitted with special hges and diagonally arranged reforcg cables. 40
